  1. Going back to the 80s I can't help thinking about STL pitcher Joaquin Andujar or "Walking Underwear" as was popular among us uncultured Brewers fans back then. He was emblematic of the class of those 80's Cardinal teams. I especially loved when he'd gracefully extend his hand towards an opposing player after striking them out in the form of an elegant firearm discharging its unmistakably finely crafted bullet. I also appreciated his respect for baseball when he skillfully demolished the water closet of the KC Royals visitors clubhouse after STL's Game 7 World Series loss in 1985. Thank you St Louis for setting the standards for us rubes from Milwaukee.
  2. FYI, tonight's Brewers/Cardinals game is showing up on Channel 444, but not on the HD alternate. I guess I'll have to watch it in SD. BTW Dish has been inconsistent at best in airing the HD games from FSWI. I'm renting in a location were ATT and TimeWarner are not available. I'm suprised to say this, but I miss TimeWarner. No MLB network on Dish and FSWI is not an RSN on Dish leading to these issues. When I move into my new house I'll be sure to switch to ATT or TimeWarner.
  3. I've been thinking about this over the past few days and decided to ask the guys who could provide a reasonable take on the question - when/should a multi-year contract be offered to Dave Bush? According to rotoworld Bush signed a 1 year $4 million deal to avoid arbitration this year. He has one year of arbitration remaining in 2010 and is a free agent in 2011. What do you think of a 3 year contract buying out Bush's last year of arbitration and first two years of free agency? What that be appealing to Bush? He's 29 and has been durable and based on his career stats I would say a reliable #4 starter. With Yo and Manny with us for the next few years this would lock up three rotation slots through 2012. Looper has an option for 2010 which is also Suppan's last year with the Crew. Signing Bush now - ahead of the all star break - would give us cost certainty to determine whether to pick up Looper's option next or pursue another pitcher via trade or pursue another free agent early in free agency. Further would signing Bush limit our ability to sign some of our other arby guys? Interested in all of your take on this.
  4. I know, I'm trying to gather myself as we speak. I will see if I can grab some screen caps. To quote the immortal Chris Rock - first the Fat Boys break up and now this...
  5. 1982-2009 It was a good run.
  6. I just saw the FSN Wisconsin HD schedule yesterday in the Journal Sentinel and I was interested that starting in mid-June almost all remaining games are broadcast in HD. There must be some reason for this like the acquisition of additional equipment. Perhaps the investment in going virtually all HD didn't line up with the start of this season? Anyway while I'd love every game in HD I recognize that the penetration of HD sets into the marketplace is relatively small and sooner or later everything will be in HD.
  7. As I've posted in previous forums I'll truly miss Jim Powell. Great guy and great broadcaster, Atlanta is lucky to get him. Here's something to look for, I believe the Brewers knew Jim was gone for at least a couple of weeks. I would not be surprised if the Brewers announce their replacement radio voice this weekend as part of On Deck. I believe the Braves wanted to announce Powell and Sutton as a tandem and the Nationals have been holding up this announcement. Powell's status was bound to be a prominent question this weekend at On Deck, so the Brewers/WTMJ wanted to get this out there. If they do make their announcement, consider that the choice may be as much about the eventual replacement of Uecker as Powell.
  8. FWIW I was away from Milwaukee for 13 years and after 3 years away began to appreciate my hometown. By year 10 I was doing everything I could to find a way to move back. Finally in year 13 I made it home again and have no intention of leaving again. I can understand if Jim has the same feeling for Georgia and the Braves. As a side note, I always had the impression that WTMJ didn't take care of Jim as well as he deserved. I remember his last contract renewal bringing uncertainty to his future with the Brewers. And finally, while I have great memories of the Sunday we clinched the Wild Card, the sour note was hearing Jim Powell stuck in the Brewers locker room while the team celebrated on the field because they did not have the equipment to allow him to go out on the field. All those years calling games for the Brewers, through some truly putrid baseball, and finally a small ray of glory and Jim's stuck by himself while the rest of Brewer nation celebrates. Ever the professional Jim turned the story back to Uke and what a great feeling it must be for him, but you could hear the frustration in his voice. This is understandable for Jim to move on, but I'll truly miss him.
  9. This is not good news for Powell fans in Milwaukee. For it to be reported in the JS and to have the Brewers respond to the story indicates to me Powell has accepted the position in principle and is either negotiating or waiting for the Braves to make an official announcement. It is truly unfortunate. I hoped Powell would be around with the Brewers for generations of future Brewers fans. He's a class act and has an awesome tennis game to boot. As Milwaukeeans/Brewers fans we need to hold ourselves, our business leaders and public officials accountable to making this area more attractive for people to stay or relocate. If we want to be more competitive with other markets, we need to grow our market from a population and educational attainment perspective. It's a nice area - an area I worked hard to move back to, however there is a fair amount of complacency and acceptance of our current ranking as a small market. More entreprenueralism would be nice as well. There have been many good people that moved through Milwaukee who wished there was more opportunity in the area so they could stay. Jim Powell is a small piece of our shared world and I wish the Braves option was not attractive to him, but I understand why it is.
  10. Obscene. My son is four years old. Instead of being a Doctor, Professional Athlete or President, I'm going to tell him to become a shipping magnate.
  11. Here you go gang, confirmation of Trenni's departure. Good for her and hopefully she won't forget us saps back in Milwaukee. http://www.onmilwaukee.co...s/articles/trennimlb.html
  12. Good for Jack. Anybody have an opinion on who we'd be interested in obtaining from the Mariners organization? Perhaps Doug and Jack will be frequent trading partners.
  13. Sorry this is late, but if you check this out I would highly recommend taking the train to Flushing Meadows and taking in the early rounds of the US Open. Great atmosphere and unbelievable tennis.
  14. If we sell out the remaining dates, and I know what constitutes a "sell-out" is debatable, I calculate we'll surpass 3.1 million in attendance. Truly a credit to the fans. Reminds me of the stories of how Milwaukee supported the Braves in the 50s. Perhaps this will develop into a true baseball town again.
  15. Doc, first off good luck on your date. Here are a few thoughts: Dinner: Fresco - Rooftop of the Overture/Madison Museum of Contemporary Art - great space and if you have the right table a great view of the Capitol Blue Marlin - not quite as special as it used to be but still a nice seafood bistro and cozy Restaurant Muramoto - if you like sushi/asian this is my Madison favorite that combines a great atmosphere and decent food Bar Bistro 608 - this is at Sundance at Hilldale - food is OK - if you can eat on the rooftop and the weather's nice a great setting After Dinner: - The Terrace is always a good choice as long as you don't mind running into EVERYBODY you possibly know - can't beat the view and feel (FYI - Pat McCurdy's playing the Terrace on Friday night - beware) - Sundance - again - the movie selection is unique and while a bit snobbish still special - I'd currently recommend the French thriller "Tell No One" - great pic - Go to Barriques for a coffee drink Let us know how it goes.
  16. Excellent points and I'm thrilled to see you raised the issue of Frank Gimbel. He's running his own show - the Mayor won't challenge him - Doyle is ambivalent and the state legislature generally lumps all things Milwaukee into the "problems" folder and rarely open the folder. The Milwaukee Theater was a Gimbel power grab to blunt the BC from their "idea" of a separate concert venue and it's a true shame as you say that money wasn't used for the BC, expanding the Convention Center or simply not spent! I really believe what's needed to get some movement on this is for Kohl to exercise leadership. He hasn't really advocated a position on this except saying he thought renovating the BC was not an option. As the largest and most significant tennant I believe he could say "we need a new facility to be competitive in the future and secure it in Milwaukee for another generation". Publicly say he's signing a 5-6 year extension at the BC and expects a new facility by 2015-2016. I would also expect him to offer a contribution towards a new facility - perhaps $30-$50 million. With this the community would actually have something real to debate and force the BC and Gimbel to figure out how they can make this work or allow the team to move to KC, Vegas, Seattle....

  18. This is not the first time I've hard Mark connected to the Bucks. While it's just rumor I believe this is encouraging because it shows Attanasio must really like this town. While I have real issues with Kohl's management style I appreciate that he's held the team for a long time and has been remarkably committed to keeping payroll competitive despite market size. It's what he's been spending that payroll on and the people put in place to manage the players and roster that have been the problem. I have to believe there will be some resolution to the arena issue prior to any sale.

  20. I asked my wife's father for permission not because they expected it because I thought it was the respectful thing to do. Plus I had no doubt he would say yes - it goes a long way. If you are at all concerned about their answer I would ask before sitting down for dinner perhaps outside the restaurant if you are meeting them there. This way if it goes south you don't have to have a miserable dinner. Also you may want to get them saying yes to things like - "are you happy with the Sabiathia trade?" - "do you think Corey Hart should make the All Star game" - "is Prince secretly eating whole cows?' Good luck.
  21. If you're willing to pay a premium both Best Buy and Circuit City have professional installation teams. Expect to pay about $200 for installation with these guys. Otherwise I'd suggest tracking down an actual Yellow Pages. I've installed a 42" flat panel by myself and it was no big deal - however I've owned a home for over 10 years and am used to doing this type of stuff now. I'm not sure what your experience is, but personal installation is not impossible - if you're looking to do it yourself go to a local ACE or True Value and ask the guys there about proper anchoring. They'll get you set up well.
  22. As others have said, just be firm and rational with your child. By 2 1/2 most know their days with the Nuk are numbered and will do anything to hold on as long as possible. Make sure they know they are big enough where they don't need it but babies do. Then suggest your child give their Nuk's to a neighbor baby. My son still talks about giving his Nuks to the baby next door and feels very good about it. It was amazing, after a few weeks of letting him know he wouldn't have the Nuk much longer - one firm conversation ended it and there hasn't been a call for it since. Good luck.
  23. I'll be Saturday's game with four other Brewer fans, sitting behind home plate. Hopefully we can take 2 out 3 like last year.
  24. Does anyone know if the Twins have a site similar to Brewerfan.net?
  25. OK, so I've been in attendance for each home game that Branyan's hit a home run this year. NEVER fails to impress - that foul ball he hit last night challenges Prince's foul off the glass above the Terrace Reserve last year. It was funny just prior to 3TO's HR last night I yelled at the pitcher and told him "not to mess with the muscle" and he threw him a strike and Branyan showed him the ways of the force. Beautiful stuff.
