  1. Maybe with his newly improved vision after lasik Billy could see the ball's trajectory better than the rest of us.
  2. Have reasons for Kendall's decline been identified? I'm assuming it is a loss of physical skills due to age and wear and tear of catching so much. Is there any reason to believe he might produce better results with more off days or is the possible improvement of using an alternative player just avoiding some poor atbats? It also seems like game calling should not be used a way to determine value. Scouting reports should be better today than ever before with the video scouting and statistical data available, but it often seems like baseball teams don't use this as well as teams in other sports. Obviously, there are more variables in batter/pitcher interactions than some match-ups in other sports. Anecdotally, it seems like every time we play the Cubs a low fastball is called in a favorable count against Soriano and he hits it a mile. It seems like it is a rare pitcher (like Greg Maddux) who has both the game plan and control to effectively use the information in game situations.
  3. Thanks for the info, sorry I missed the other thread. I actually am coming down from Sonoma, so maybe the ferry will be a decent way to get there. The seats do look good from all over, I'll be down the first base near shallow right field.
  4. I'm going to the 2nd game of the season at AT&T Park against the Giants and wondered if anyone has any experience with this park. The Giants official site sounds as if parking is difficult and visitors should take a ferry to and from the park. Any info anyone has would be great. I'm a Madison resident who just happened to be going to northern California next week and was able to talk my wife into going to the game.
  5. Any chance the kids drafted last year such as Odorizzi or Lintz start at Wisconsin? I know Lintz had some issues, but Odorizzi seemed solid in limited action last year.
  6. What about one of the Angel's backup outfielders? They have a huge surplus after signing Abreu and bringing back Juan Rivera. Reggie Willits is similar to Gwynn and Duffy as a light-hitting center field type, but other than a poor year last year he has always put up good OBP in limited action (.411 2006, .391 in 2007). He is also a switch hitter which might provide some extra versatility off of the bench. The Angels would still have Gary Matthews to back up Hunter in CF, so they might look to move Willits.
  7. I noticed on mlbtraderumors that Tampa's Jeff Niemann is also out of options. He had one good and one poor start early in the season last year. His numbers have been pretty good at AAA the past two years, with K/9 over 8. He still gives up a fair number of walks and some homers though. Tampa seems to have a lot of depth and maybe they would consider trading him at this point.
  8. This thread to me sounds too much like the old brewers. I don't see the point of spending 6-10 million per year (this may be low) on someone like Randy Wolf or taking a big risk on a retread pitcher who is a big injury risk. This seems like the method of a team that doesn't even think they can contend. I would rather go all in after a good pitcher than do another deal like Suppan's. Maybe if we sign one high level pitcher, I would take a flyer on someone like Colon as depth only.
  9. I agree that it would probably be ideal to look internally for a candidate. One interesting comment on MLBTR today discussed how Trevor Hoffman is concerned about the ability of the Padres to contend and may not automatically resign there. He may just retire as well (he is 41), but his numbers from last year were still pretty good. He converted 30 of 34 save opportunities and still had 46K in 45 innings. I wonder if he might consider signing a one year deal with a contender.
  10. I saw Ricky Nolasco listed as a possible trade target by the Cubs on a board. He had a fairly good year last year and looks to be arbitration eligible for the first time this year. Will the Marlins try to unload him for prospects, or hold onto him for another year or two? His previous MLB stats prior to this year aren't really that impressive, but he had a K/9 of 7.88 and an ERA of 3.52. His ERA was actually slightly better on the road as well, so this was not completely a product of playing in a big park. He did give up a fair number of HR balls at 28, with a slightly higher rate on the road.
  11. I find Berman annoying as well. I don't like Steven A but find Scott Van Pelt's Steven A impression to be hilarious. I actually don't like any of the national baseball commentators very much (especially Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan, feel really bad for their partners)
  12. I think the brewers' facial hair is great as well, but doesn't match the look Jason LaRue was sporting for the cardinals this week. With the long stache and the hair he looks like a '70's player for sure.
  13. When Kendall beat out the infield play today and reached on the error all I could think of was how Estrada would never have even been close to reaching on a similar play. This combined with the fact he was actually able to score on a sac fly demonstrates how nice it is to have a catcher who is at least an average base runner.
  14. I agree that a team in Madison would be nice (as I am a resident). However, I wonder if the people would support real baseball. The Mallards draw big crowds (over 5000 on weekends) but most people come for the promotions and the atmosphere is more like that of a circus than a baseball game. Perhaps the Huntsville front office could evaluate some of their promotions though.
