  1. I'd also take Cabrera at this point for two reasons: first, as YoungGeezy mentions, he is younger and more affordable; and second, he's a switch hitter. I like Cameron a lot, but at his age, you always need to keep your options open.
  2. I know you were joking, and I know this is off topic, but I'd like to see Dave Duncan replace Castro. He'd be hard to pry away from LaRussa, but he was certainly unhappy with his son's trade. Given that LaRussa and his contract are expiring this year, maybe there is a chance.
  3. I could not disagree more with this trade. This is the exact trade not to do. Morrow might be something, but Washburn is a goner in 2-months. Though Hardy has struggled this year, he's got to be worth more than that, and if not, I say you keep him through next year.
  4. Theoretically, there will be more possible trading partners in the off-season. Now, there are very few sellers out there, so you limiting your pool of options. Plus, if JJ can rebound at all in the second half, it won't be such a sell low trade, but more of sell his career average, which is pretty good. I could see trading JJ now for the right piece, but not for a 2-month above average pitching rental.
  5. I do not trade Hardy, or any high level prospect for Washburn. Sell or sit still. Move Hardy + a prospect in the off-season for a younger pitcher with 2 type stuff. The deal will be much more possible in the off-season. Given the sellers market at the moment, we will get raked over the coals before the deadline. Washburn is just not a big enough difference maker with the current team's makeup.
  6. No. Don't waste prospects on a mediocre free agent to be pitcher. Sign him this off-season if you want. But Washburn will not fix this team. Do not but, either sell or stand still.
  7. Total bush league camera work. I could not tell if he threw a strike or bounced it in. I was expecting a strike from a young athlete like Obama, but I guess I'll never know.
  8. I'm not ready to blame this on Castro, but in the back of mind I've always wondered how a guy can be a bullpen coach for as long as he has, through numerous managers, without getting the full time pitching coach job somewhere in the bigs before (I know he was an interim back in the day). It's one of those things that makes you scratch your head and wonder if there something we don't know about him that has held him back all these years. I pray he succeeds. And it's too soon to say he won't.
  9. I'm all for walks, but with a man on 3rd and two outs, I'd hope that either Braun or Fielder might attempt to get a hit. If Braun, Fielder, and Hardy don't pick it up, our vaunted offense will go nowhere while our pitchers walk in runs.
  10. I hate to be the pessimist, but with the upcoming roadtrip against NY and Philly, it would really be nice to take this series against the Reds, or we might be in for a real rough first 3 weeks of the season.
  11. Why not try Escobar at 2nd? He can use his range there a bit more than at 3rd. I'm not convinced that Weeks will be our long-term 2nd baseman. Gamel-Hardy-Esobar would be a pretty nice middle infield.
  12. Sign Orlando Hudson as a free agent (or trade Weeks + mid-level prospect for Roberts). Trade Rickie Weeks (or Hall + prospect if Weeks traded above) to Dodgers for Andre Ethier and a pitcher. Decline Cameron's option, move Hart to CF, start Ethier in Right. If Hall is traded for Ethier above, move Hardy to 3rd, and start with Escobar at SS. Perhaps not realistic, but it gives us two pretty good OBP options from the left side (and one will be a switch hitter). We still would have more than enough power with Braun, Fielder, Hardy, and Hart. It would be a more balanced line-up in terms of lefty/righty, but also in terms of hitters who work counts and get on base for the power hitters.
  13. Stupid thought, but is it possible that Mark A just falls in love with the idea of keeping CC and pushes Melvin to get it done? There has been so many positives in this CC thing, that Mark A might just see it as a must to keep the franchise building good faith and selling tickets in the community as well as on the field. Mark A is primarily a businessman versus one one of those free spending rich owner types, but you never now, he might just surprise us for a player of CC's caliber. If we did not have the Suppan contract, I could really see us making a push to keep CC. As is, I still think it is a longshot to get CC, but not out of the realm of all possibility.
  14. Yes, I was thinking about this last night once Braun gave us a 3-0 lead. His next start is against the Cubs, and you don't want him to struggle against them because he's been racking up CG's. On the other hand, his pitch count was so low that I'm not sure yesterday was very taxing (106 pitches is a pretty normal night in the bigs, and only 2 more pitches than Looper threw through 5 innings). I think he'll get a couple extra days of rest with off-days in August. And depending how things look in late September (knock on wood), perhaps he'll skip a start to set him up for the postseason. But with the cost of acquisition of CC, I have feeling that the Crew will take every last pitch from CC that they can.
  15. Easy B. He cost us a few games, but I reckon he also won us a couple as well. Can't argue with the results, especially considering their road schedule and Gallardo's injury.
  16. Diggr14, Those error numbers are highly misleading. Everyone, and I mean everyone, believes that Escobar is a significant improvement at SS (not a knock on JJ). He probably has more errors because he has tremendous range and gets to many more difficult balls. All scouts/baseball people say that Escobar will be a Gold Glove type SS, with the only question being whether he has a big-league stick.
  17. If Cleveland balks at offer including LaPorta and Green, then I'll live without Sabathia and take Maddux. I think we can catch the Cards with Maddux. Then in the off-season we can pry away Grienke or Cain for the type of prospects Cleveland is balking at. Their expectations are absurd for a mid-season rental. They want more at mid-season for Sabathia than the Twins got for Santana (a better pitcher over his career) from the Mets. They're way over-valuing a three month rental.
  18. I take Fielder over Berkman now because of age/potential. However, that being said this year Berkman is much more all-star worthy than Prince. Truthfully, Ben Sheets is the only Brewer worthy of the All-Star team this season. Prince should not make the team based on performance, as there are 3 better performances at first base this year in his own division: Lee, Pujols, Berkman.
  19. One thing I can say as an absolute fact: over time, I personally enjoy watching hitters and line-ups (and baseball games) where hitters do more than strikeout at high rates! It keeps my blood pressure down and increases my enjoyment of the game! Speaking of blood pressure, Dave Bush...
  20. I'm not sure what I stated as fact without evidence. My statement was clearly opinion and had no pretext of facts/evidence. I said I appreciated the contributions of sabermetrics to the game (I think they've changed it for the better), but disagree with the general concept often cited by many sabermetric people that strikeouts are not relevant. I don't dispute that a k=1 out, but my opinion is that this simple equation does not necessarily explain the realm of possible outcomes for something other than a k. I'm sorry, but I simply don't have time (nor frankly the desire) to due a full statistical analysis (and that's not meant to degrade those who have the desire, just a point that I do not so desire). I'm happy if you're able to correct me (as I've learned a lot from many of your posts). But that is my opinion, and I don't pretend for one minute that my opinion is fact. Also, I'm not sure what I did to deserve such a terse response (especially considering how many other more negative posts were made in this thread before my comment about the importance of k's).
  21. Gee, who would guess, a line-up full of strike out hitters might go on a long slump? Well I appreciate the contribution of statistics to the game, the one stat-based wisdom thing I completely disagree with is ignoring strikeouts. While it is true that a strikeout has the same outcome affect as any other out, that ignores that possibilities of all that occur upon contact before the outcome is determined: it can be an out, a hit, a homer, a sacrifice advancing a runner, or an error. When one strikes out, the outcome is guaranteed to be an out (unless catchers drops it), while when one makes contact, there are numerous possibilities short of a sure out (including an error, which turns a near sure out into a base runner). Off my soapbox.
  22. Why not bring in Dillon for Gwynn after the pitching change? That is, do the rules prohibit a second pinch hitter (and yes, I realize that you lose Gwynn if the rules allow for the double pinch hitter).
  23. Gord Ash says it was a "complete tear" of the ACL. On JSONLINE blog.
  24. That's a totally irrational knee-jerk(no pun intended) reaction to this move. And one that people would probably be mocking in a couple years. If, if, if, if Yo's going to be out all year, or we need to make a deal, then perhaps you can deal one of them plus something for a pitcher, likely LaPorta as he's got more value to others, and Gamel may have more value to us. Either way, trading two prospects, that I think will be top 25 prospects next year for a pitcher because we found out today that our young arm got hurt is giant overkill. Actually, it's far from a knee jerk reaction. I've thought for some time (well before Gallardo got hurt) that we should try to get Linecum from the Giants. Lincecum replacing Sheets in the long run, with (a hopefully healthy and recovered) Gallardo make a real nice young 1-2 punch. And you're not going to get a guy of Linceum's quality for nothing. Gamel's defense is a huge question. As much as I like LaPorta, you've got to give something to get something (How soon we forget that Linecum was one of the top 5 or so pitching prospects in baseball, and his results so far in the bigs have been good). This trade would not affect our present day roster, and given the number of draft picks we got this year, not necessarily mortgage our future either. I have no problem with you calling it a poor trade, but please don't say it's knee jerk, because it is far from it.
