  1. Unless you don't consider the lack of a cap (hard or soft) not being a "problem" Baseball seems to be doing just fine without a hard salary cap.
  2. Bottom line, it generally takes a combination of 3 or even 4 walks/singles to score a run. I know that my beliefs fly in the face of modern statistical thinking, but I'm pretty set in my ways. There's no reason to have beliefs when actual stats exist. You can look through gamelogs. How many times can you find that it takes 4 walks and singles to score a run? Of course power is good. Do you find anyone arguing against having power?
  3. Bottom line, rightly or wrongly, I'm never going to agree with the sabermetric guys on the intrinsic value of a walk, no matter what the statistical models/studies say. Why would you choose ignorance over knowledge?
  4. I don't buy into the OBP fascination, especially when the guy as a low batting average and/or little power. What fascination do you see? A comment was made that he was good with OBP. That's just a statement of fact. And someone can easily have good OBP with a low batting average. Of course, if you really believe that a batter isn't responsible for his own approach and the success it brings, it's going to lead to confusion and lack of understanding.
  5. I'm still trying to figure out how a .260 career hitter can be a 'good OBP guy' What's keeping you from figuring it out? BA doesn't equal OBP. For his career, his OBP is 21 points higher than the context adjusted league average.
  6. People have said that it's a good thing that Morgan is under control through 2014. That doesn't mean that anyone has said that he should be in a Brewer uniform the entire time and any CF prospect should be traded away. It means that it's great that Melvin was able to buy low on a candidate, get a great return for the first year, expect at least an average season and hope for another good season for 2012 and then still be able to trade him because he would still offer another team 2 years of control.
  7. You said earlier in this thread that you wanted to have Morgan next year. So how is keeping Morgan for one more year blocking a prospect and building around Morgan?
  8. I believe Gamel is going to be nothing special and will be a major disappointment. Gamel can simultaneously be nothing special and a major disappointment while also providing years of averageish or better quality at a low cost. I have just lost all faith in Gamel and I am not sure he is ever going to be the player that some think he is How do you come to your player evaluations? You said Ian Kennedy was going to have a ceiling as a #3 and would likely be a #4 or #5 pitcher.
  9. Yuni B is the worst starting SS in MLB. And has been several years in row. Therefore he should be a backup or aka a "scrub". Someone is going to be the worst starting SS. That doesn't mean they should be a backup. It means they are better than the backup. I have been ignoring your responses because this is exactly the type of argument that drives people from this board. That's interesting. How do you know this, and what kind of people are being driven by the board? Personally, I think that you saying something incorrect about somebody else, not backing it up or apologizing for being incorrect, and not being held accountable could drive people away.
  10. Certainly they are higher ceiling. But if you are concerned about cost, then there is incentive to keep them in the minors to start the season. If they don't start the season, but come up a few weeks into the season, you can get 6 years and 5 months or so of service time. If you bring them up 2 or 3 months into the season, you can avoid Super 2 status, which can save up to millions of dollars, depending on the player.
  11. Everyone in the lineup doesn't have to hit HRs to contribute offensively ISO isn't just about HR. But I'm guessing you know that. these aren't the types of players an organization should build around Is there anyone who is suggesting that Morgan is someone the Brewers should build around?
  12. I'd be less surprised if they traded Narveson, who's younger, cheaper, and not quite as good. That way spots 1-4 in the rotation are hugely experienced/successful starters and the #5 spot can be filled by Fiers/Peralta/Estrada -- in other words, someone younger & cheaper than Narveson. Narveson isn't eligible for arbitration yet, so if a rookie will be cheaper, it would be relatively little difference - $30k or so. It's rare for a team to only have 6 starters in a season. If some team gives up a lot to get Narveson, it would be worth exploring, but he shouldn't be a target to be moved. Fiers, Peralta, etc can still use development time in the minors and would be options if needed during the season.
  13. 2) get a super defense SS with the range to get to liners down the 3B line, I'm trying to figure out what you meant to write here, because Kurt Wagner isn't available to sign.
  14. Will Mark A take on Prince's salary personally and then give Melvin a team payroll? No, that wouldn't happen. If Fielder isn't blown away by the market, he can have Boras come back to the Brewers with a deal that gives Prince an opt out after 2 or 3 years. Melvin waited for CC to sign with NY, I wouldn't be surprised if he let certain possible FA targets that the Brewers might have interest in them (Reyes, Barmes), but they wouldn't be ready to commit until Fielder makes a decision.
  15. The postseason taught us that they better hold off on signing Greinke to any long term deal and maybe think of locking up Axford instead. There's no reason that these actions should be tied together. The Brewers could lock up both Axford and Greinke if desired. I'm not really sure locking up Axford should be a priority. The Brewers should have control for 4 more years. How much longer do you want him locked up?
  16. That said, teams like Milwaukee cannot blow 20% of their budget on one player. The 2007 Rockies paid Helton 30% of their salary when they made the World Series in 2007. My worry about re-signing Prince is that we may become the Rangers of about 10 years ago, with Arod. We may not be able to get enough pitching, or get the shortstop necessary to win big. Arod wasn't the problem. Paying Chan Ho Park millions for his lack of production was a problem.
  17. When the Red Sox drank beer all the time and won championships, that was their "chemistry", now it's the cause of their demise. How stupid. There is a difference between celebration and goofing off while co-workers are going through an epic collapse. I think its ok to be loose on the bench. It's quite another to abandon teammates to drink and play video games while their comrades are drowning.
  18. I could see the Orioles going after Ortiz if he wants to leave Boston and NY doesn't sign him.
  19. Yuni saw 26 pitches today. I wonder how close that number is to the lowest number of pitches he's seen in a 3 game series.
  20. Anyone know if they are staying at the Pfister? Would be funny if TLR complained about someone losing sleep because of the supernatural.
  21. I think it's telling that you feel contrasting views must involve negativity. As far as not liking negativity, I like that people are advocating against it. Sure, we could just all go way, or we could try to advocate for change. Again, it's interesting that you would not like to see people challenge the negativity.
  22. I don't think the Brewers getting Reyes is likely, but if they did it wouldn't mean the Brewers couldn't also re-sign Greinke.
  23. Out of all the players that are scheduled to be FA, Reyes provides the best chance to improve the Brewers. Shortstop is the weakest spot the Brewers have in the minors. Assuming Prince leaves, the Brewers will have money to spend, and as linked recently, the new TV deal is going to add significant revenue to the team. The big unknown right now is what the market is going to be for Reyes. If he would be available for 5/$75M, I would hope the Brewers would be all over that. If some team offers something resembling the Werth deal, there's no way the Brewers should be in on it.
  24. I certainly understand the sentiment, but this really should be a time of elation and celebration, at least for a day.
  25. There was one post today. 4 posts yesterday. Not exactly going strong.
