  1. I don't believe it evens out If it doesn't even out, then how would NL teams win the season series against AL teams?
  2. We have to do things like have Ryan Braun start the year in AAA in 07 for 2 months, despite being the 2nd best hitter on the team at the time so we gain an entire year at the back end before he hits free agency. You could bring up a player a few weeks into the season to get the 7th year. The reason for waiting around 2 months is to avoid Super-2. Of course, it's a guessing game, because if lots of teams did that, then the Super 2 status would come later. I am naive in many ways, but I don't believe they delayed bringing up Braun for that reason. I genuinely thought they wanted to give him for time to improve his defense. Turns out that wasn't a bad motive, as he showed throughout the season that he is not a third basemen. Are manager's contracts guaranteed like the players? As far as I know, yes, and his 2009 option was picked up in the offseason. It seems to be standard practice that a team has to overpay a manager for a year, just so the manager isn't continually answering questions about his status in the walk year.
  3. I don't know the details of the Cordero contract but what is he making this year compared to Gagne? Gagne signed for one year and $10 million. The Brewers offered Coco something like 4/42, but he signed for 4/46 with the Reds.
  4. I took issue with your use of the word never, which I didn't use. Why do you find my statement odd? In order for Attanasio to fire Melvin, he should determine what liabilities Melvin has, and whether those are things that can be corrected, or if those are part of what Melvin is. Let's say that you feel that Melvin is inferior at making trades. How would you determine that a new candidate is good at making trades? How do you know he's not going to trade Kazmir away for Zambrano?
  5. The NL won the series in 97, 99, 02, and 03, and there was a one game difference in 04. The DH wasn't an overwhelming factor until the last couple of years. The record is AL 1387 NL 1317 from 97-07.
  6. the two leagues will never be even (as seen in the last numerous years of the AL domination over NL in interleague). I don't think you can put that all on the DH. There was a fair amount of talent movement from the NL to the AL over a couple of years that contributed to that.
  7. If you're going to quote me, you should respond to what I actually said, not what your logic thinks. I do feel that to replace Melvin right now would be bad, because of the uncertainty of what a new GM brings. I certainly don't think that will always be the case.
  8. I heart Braun. I'm glad that he's going to be with this team for 7 more years, and hope he stays to be a franchise player. Those are just about the perfect things to say.
  9. The unfair advantage isn't with the DH. It's with the payroll that can be spent. If the Brewers and the Red Sox had the same resources and the same payroll, than the Brewers would spend more money elsewhere on the roster and would have an advantage over the Red Sox in other areas. The Brewers won't be signficantly disadvantaged against the Blue Jays or the Os.
  10. Wow! So he can never fire Melvin because how would he ever know who might be better.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Please show where I said that. I didn't say Melvin should never be fired. I said that it doesn't make sense to get rid of someone who you feel is mostly doing a good job, as I imagine Attanasio does. FTJ is right in that everybody is replaceable, but that doesn't mean it's easy or right to do so.
  11. Sometimes I can argue so much in one side that I feel I'm disparaging the other side too much. Clearly the Brewers feel Crabbe has some future value to team, or they wouldn't have spent 25k to get him back. Whether that value is insurance against a Weeks injury, or as utility infielder next year to take over for Counsell, etc. ZiPS rates Weeks as a fair defender, (I think thats 2 out of 5) and Crabbe has average. I don't know if that's just because a player is rated average as a default, and then changes with more evidence, or because Crabbe has shown enough to just be rated as average. Edit: Apparently consecutive posts are frowned upon here, and I wrote this post while the preceding ones were being posted. So here's my response. I understand questioning projections, but I need a reason to question them. I questioned that Suppan was projected to be worse than Bush, and so far I have been right to doubt them. Right now, I don't have any reason to question the projections for Crabbe, and baseball history suggests that Weeks will get better than he is now. I don't know why Weeks is struggling. I don't know if it's a flaw in the swing, in the approach, etc. Hopefully the coaching staff is working on that. If Rickie continues to struggle, sure, make a change. I just don't think that time has come yet.
  12. Just because someone is rated low defensively doesn't mean they should be moved. Someone is always going to be ranked low on a list. In the preseason Crabbe was projected by ZiPS to hit for .239, have an OBP of .326 and slug .330. Weeks was projected to have rates of .254/.363/.422. To put some perspective on that, Weeks was projected to have above average performance offensively at every position except for 1B. Crabbe's performance this year hasn't given any indication that he should be expected to perform better than his projection. The real question is who would be expected to provide more total value to the Brewers? In my opinion, it's still Rickie, but if he goes another couple of weeks without improvement, things should change in some fashion.
  13. ok, but what you are missing is that weeks commits a lot of errors while SIMULTANEOUSLY not getting to a lot of balls, relative to other players at his position. There is no justification that weeks is even an average fielder, he is not. Why do you think I'm missing this? I have never said that Weeks is an average defender. By ZR, Weeks is inferior, but not the worst 2B in the big leagues. There are currently about 5 regulars with worse ratings.
  14. LOL, would you rather I just post the amount of errors on balls that he does get to? Or does that have no value either? That wouldn't have much value, no, because it doesn't tell you how many plays he is making compared to other players at his position, compared to the type of pitchers on the mound, the handedness of the batters, etc. Zone Rating is probably the best readily available fielding statistic, but I'm not sure that's available for minor leaguers. For minor leaguers, you probably have to rely on scouting reports, and glimpses that you see during Spring Training.
  15. Fans surely don't have the extensive list of names. They have access to them. It's true that very few fans will take the time needed to do the research, but that doesn't mean it's not available. All the team media guides are available online, and if you read all the baseball media that is out there you'll see interviews and features on front office people, beyond just the GMs. Jazzytrav, it's my opinion that a bad GM can set a franchise back for years. If you have a GM that is mostly doing good things but has made mistakes, that's far more preferable to having someone new come in make a series of bad moves that may not be realized for years. I don't get the sense that Attanasio is anything but happy with the performance of Melvin so far, and I would guess that Mark has at least signed off every significant move Melvin has made.
  16. because you are far from the first person to use the old, "who do you have in mind" line...BUT the fans sure as heck don't have the inside sources of the game that MLB executives have with regard to upcoming and qualified talent evelauators and baseball minds. I don't think that's entirely true. I think most of that information is out there, you just have to sift through a lot of information to get it.
  17. I am certain he has a ton of experience hiring and firing people, and if he is unable to upgrade Melvin, he probably has no business owning a MLB team. No business owning a team? Didn't you just say new ownership has a lot to do with the capacity crowds? Melvin is far from the worst GM in the league, and you think a clear upgrade is available? What areas do you think can be improved over what Melvin provides, and how would Attanasio know that a candidate would be better in those areas?
  18. Hernan doesn't project to be better than Weeks with the bat, and most of the games this year have been in the OF. I don't think that move is likely.
  19. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/05/17/why-branyan-wasn-t-called-up.aspx talks about Branyan and how the Brewers didn't want to bring him up for 3 games and then have him clear waivers to get sent back down. They like the flexibility of the roster. I'm with others that wonders why Gwynn is on the team. Yost will use Kapler as a PH against righties before Gwynn, so he's not really adding much value right now.
  20. I think the new ballpark has a lot to do with the capacity crowds, and new ownership. The Brewers drew 1.7 million in 2003 and 2.87 million last year. It's true that Attansio has done a wonderful job as new owner, but I think Melvin has done a decent job at spending that money. The problem with firing somebody for not doing a job as well as one would like is you don't know how the new person is going to do. You could make the problem worse. I don't think Melvin has done a bad enough job to warrant no longer doing it. He's made mistakes, but if GMs aren't making mistakes, they aren't trying hard enough. You have to take gambles to win. Sometimes you have the 2005 White Sox. Most times you have the White Sox of other years.
  21. range has never been weeks strong suit either, in spite of his speed. I wasn't arguing that Weeks has range, I was saying that FP doesn't tell us how good a defender Crabbe is. Weeks isn't going to continue to have such an awful batting average, so we shouldn't weigh Crabbe's potential against what Weeks is doing now. I think it's too early to give up on Weeks, this is still only his age 25 season. Weeks will get better, it's just frustrating to wait for him to do so.
  22. Fielding percentage doesn't tell you anything about a player's ability to get to balls, only that they field the balls they get to. It's not a good way to value a player's defense.
  23. He has. Last year. And this year is only about 1/4 of the season through. Why would you hold a GM accountable for a team that hasn't finished its season?
  24. How is firing Melvin going to get them out of last place?
  25. Not too many GM's in any sport get to keep their job for 6+ years w/o producing results. You think a winning record and near capacity crowds at Miller Parks aren't producing results?
