  1. actually the brewers have had the hurricane since he was 18 he was a latin prospect and they actually moved him pretty slow given the batting averages he's put up throughout his career.
  2. purely a guess but with an arm like that and how thin we are with starter i think you have to take a shot at developing him as a starter can always move him to the pen later. This would also give him more time to develop his stuff in games.
  3. I think most would argue that laporta is not the best hitting prospect in the game he maybe a top 25 guy in the minors for hitting but there are more then a few better then him. he may be average on balls he gets too but his range is way below average jeter is no longer a major league caliber defensive shortstop but he's to big of a baby to move. (combined consecutive posts and shortened quoted material --1992)
  4. you mean he's not already was i the only person that noticed mcclung pitched pretty dang good last year as a starter. Suppan is slipping no doubt and his room for error is much smaller then mcclung due to the difference in velocity.
  5. that's not really the issue you'd be negating escobars speed by playing him at third because third base is played on reactions were as a shortstop requires speed to cover more ground as he has more time to get to the ball then a 3rd baseman does.
  6. he has been a decent shortstop but i recall most scouts thought he had a higher ceiling as a pitcher.
  7. if were talking about unestablished prospects brewer is far more risky then escobar. talk about not hitting much.
  8. because jeter is the only shortstop in the majors with less range then hardy. That was a stupid move on the yankees parts as just about every major league pundit believes jeter is a far below average defensive shortstop at this point in his career. Arod really should be moved back as jeter is costing them a great deal of runs with his lack of range. Part of me is dumbfounded by the fact the jeter is starting games over jimmy rollins at shortstop on team usa.
  9. You might be trading a 10 time gold glover at a premium position then if escobar turns into the second coming of ozzie smith and hardy continues his current career path then we made the wrong choice. This isn't really that easy of a decision if escobar hits .270 15hr and 60 rbi's he has better value then hardy as he may save 20 runs over the year by getting to balls that hardy can't. Not to mention escobar is also a plus runner.
  10. Does anyone else remember Hardy saying that he wouldn't sign with teams coming out of high school if they wouldn't let him play shortstop? I thought there was a story about that as the Brewers were one of the few teams that would let him stick at shortstop.
  11. the kid is going to be a monster at second base he could be like jeff kent except with range
  12. after listening to the BA podcast today they talked actually about Lawrie Solame Gamel and Escobar. regarding salome it sounds like part of the reason PED issue and the other part is the fact that he is a very unconventional prospect according to what I heard from their positional rankings today they don't understand how he does everything your not supposed to and still hits but he has such good hand eye coordination that it doesn't effect him.
  13. gotta believe nelson makes it as a left handed bat of the bench especially considering his power and ability to back up first.
  14. at what point has he ever been given consistant at bats to prove he can hit you really can't bash a guy when he gets maybe 5 ab's a week. even good players have a hard time putting together hits without regular at bats.
  15. lawrie had one of the most advanced bats in the draft the knock on him is he's been bounced around through so many positions that no one knows where he'll play going into the draft he was listed as 3b 2b and c. By the way baseball america never puts players from the previous years draft super high unless they're top 5 pics. They have way to much to prove and are at to low of a level to really project them against guys at the higher levels.
  16. no offense but i don't think salome is going to push on the best outfielders in the national league out of his position. braun ain't moving unless hart is traded and even then i have to believe the brewers don't want to keep moving him around. This brewers team has a lot more talent the brewers of dave nilsson era.
  17. I'm actually not terribly leary of Gamel at third base most of reports we've heard are from outside the organization from guys like BA that watch player play once maybe twice a year. from what i've heard the bulk of his errors are throwing errors which is correctable and comes from repitition now gamel will never be a gold glover but a couple of more years working with don money and i have to believe he'll work out the kink in his throwing mechanics. Green is actually the type of guy the brewers need more of a scrappy guy that just gets the job done both he and gillespie are the types of players that hit well and don't necessarily stand out but just put up numbers.
  18. Hey at least he's doing better then Charlie Fermaint. I would guess if he hits .280/15/70 this year which isn't out of the question AAA is going to be stacked so he'll have protection in the lineup to see good pitches he'll have a better then even shot at taking over center next year. although who knows what kind of trades we make this year.
  19. here's the problem though those teams can afford to pay them they would just rather overpay for a mediocre free agent the brewers were notorious for this in the mid to late 90's. your far better off just paying for the most talented prospects that's why your seeing more teams just spend the money and build through their farm system they end up paying a much lower payroll at the major league level once those prospects are ready ala the marlins and rays.

  21. yeah he was a signability pick that year has anyone worked out under those circumstances in besides mauer i mean really how long before teams realize going cheap just makes it harder to compete. especially when you have the first pick that player almost always at least spends a couple of seasons in the majors(as long as you go best player available route) unless he's a pitcher who blows out his arm.
