  1. That's a much more direct way of making the point. Thanks. I agree and still took a tangent. I’m the same way...normally if I can write it in 20 words, I’ll use 200. Totally agree that this is the news cycle in general.
  2. This could describe the evolution of media coverage in general, not just sports. Things were different when there wasn't such incessant 24-hour news & sports coverage. Another major sea change came about when ESPN (or was it the NBA?) decided to market the individual players instead of the teams -- sad timing with the shift across the '90s into that much more of a "me first" society, which got into way too many players' heads in many sports that they were more important than their team (one could argue that it started a decade earlier when record labels went after lead singers of successful bands to break away into solo careers). .... Not to sound like a total curmudgeon here, but I'm at least old enough to notice the interconnectedness of these shifts. Some of the shifts have borne very positive & fan-friendly results (availability of news, scoops, & forums where folks like us can dive headlong into our favorite team). But there are down sides within it all, too. And... to loop it back to the topic at hand, I'm so glad we're getting into the heart of January because there are tons of unsigned FAs & the Brewers have some distinct needs, so I'm very eagerly anticipating some Brewers good news in the coming weeks. The lack of it up to now is akin to fasting while trying to peer through the grocery store windows. back to my point, Haudricourt is a fine journalist. Many fans want him to be something else
  3. I don't know about most on here, but I grew up loving Sportscenter in the 90s. There was almost no analysis, speculation, etc. It was presented by two anchors presenting the sports news. It was a highlight show. As time went on, these shows became dominated by analysis and speculation led by former players insiders that break news.
  4. I've heard players off the record complain about him. I've never complained about either. If you look at both sites, they write virtually the same articles each day. Neither is better or worse than the other. McCalvy does fan mailbags which might reveal some nuggets, but they also present speculation. Haudricourt treats his job more as a journalist...that means not publishing unsubstantiated things, not giving opinions, etc. In this modern age, the general public is having their appetites fed by rumor mongering and speculation, not actual journalists reporting news. That's true in both sports and general (especially political news, where more people trust social media and forwarded email lies rather than truth). Let's be honest, Haudricourt is a good journalist, but bad a rumor mongering, speculation, and breaking news.
  5. this is not a big deal. In MLB all baseballs have the rubbing mud on them. I knew someone whose baseballs were voted as the best in MLB several years running. He took the slick brand new balls, rubbed them in the mud. While rubbing the balls, he'd be chewing a dip that was a little sticky, and spitting into his hands. A player may not want too much tackiness on the ball, but too little and those 98mph heaters will get close to them, and those curveballs will slip out of hands and possibly hit them.
  6. good job. 2 full terms or 10 years! I'd say most Americans don't know that. Most students want to dispute it when I normally bring it up as a random factoid.
  7. not being political, but mentioning something I said to my class today. Pop Quiz...if President Trump re-signs today, Mike Pence becomes president for 2 weeks. If ever elected president, how many more terms can he serve as president?
  8. remarkable career. I wish more teams would encourage pitchers to dabble with the knuckler, from HS, college, and the pros. It's an equalizer pitch.
  9. Getting him out of the Central should be good for 2-3 wins for the Brewers. I think several of his homers still haven't landed.
  10. Given our history with Richardson, Walla, Ray, Davis, Frederickson, Bradley, Jungmann, Covey, etc etc etc, I'm confident we got more use out of Claudio than we would have a draft pick.
  11. Since when did they manipulate it with Hader? He was a moderately effective minor league starter/reliever with great stuff and inconsistent results. It's not like he was putting up video game numbers in the minors. Your statement is the first time I've heard them accused of manipulating service time. I've read comments from baseball personnel that while some teams do manipulate service time, most MLB officials would rather bring up a kid to help them win today, even if it costs them a few million dollars in the long run. The only real manipulation that is widespread is keeping someone in the minors to give them 7 years before reaching free agency rather than 6
  12. I get it, but there's also no box rentals. So if you finance several "Osprey" boxes the first year, the price increase is negligible.
  13. I was already at 15% at a teacher, but when I applied for the new 25% offer, it never updated. Maybe I'll try again
  14. I think a lot of people misunderstand many concepts thrown around in the media: community spread- they don't understand the goal isn't necessarily to eliminate all transmission, just to lower the amount of spread occurring flatten the curve- they think the goal was to end all infection. But flatten the curve is a concept to keep hospitals and health care capacity at a sustainable level. When hospitals are too full, people can't get adequate care, and more people will die of COVID, heart attacks, diabetes, the flu, cancer, and countless other ailments.
  15. To support what I've said, using this is saving me around $1800 over having DirecTV in two locations. Maybe I'm different from all of you, but I love the cable/Satellite experience. What I hate are poor customer service, box rental fees, HD fees, DVR fees, and that I had to pay for service in two locations. Yes, I'm still using a giant telecom company, but I love that I can use one service in both locations, pay no box rentals, HD fees, DVR fees, etc.
  16. Weird thing with that is that Nilsson, Surhoff, and Oliver were all fine offensively. In fact, the first two were outstanding. Those bad teams were all about pitching. When Ricky Bones, Scott Karl, Cal Eldred (post 1993), etc are your top pitchers, you're in trouble. At least they made an effort when they signed Ben McDonald before his arm gave out
  17. that's kind of what I wanted. Everyone I know that's tried YouTube TV has liked the price (until lately) but hated the interface. I tried DirecTV NOW a few years back and loved the price and packages, but hated the interface. What I love with AT&T TV is that I have no box rental fees, I can split one package between two locations, I get the exact same channel numbers as DirecTV. For someone with a home and condo, it amounts to massive savings but still gives the overall feel of cable/satellite.
  18. Are you outside of the Brewers' media market? I get MLB.tv so it looks like I'll get every game this year EXCEPT those being played by the Brewers. Yep, in AZ
  19. a small vocal minority of parents have harassed and threatened my district's superintendent and family enough over us returning to online learning that he has resigned. They held protests at his house, published his address on Facebook, have threatened him, have harassed his young children. It's awful
  20. still loving AT&T TV. I get all the channels as Directv, but cheaper. The box works nicely. And I'm using the Android TV app for MLB extra innings instead of the Apple TV I've used for about 10 years
  21. I feel they've underperformed in the post-season, but they play in one of the best leagues in the country, top-to-bottom. Even DePaul hasn't been a slouch lately. The cupboard was bare when Wojo took over, and he finally has players staying all 4-5 years to built his culture. This team is clearly the most athletic we've had at MU in a long time (since the McNeal, James, Matthews, Hayward, Butler year). This is going to be a fun year
  22. they called Reuvers on the screen there, but it may have been more a makeup after they didn't call the previous forearm
  23. I don't know how Reuvers doesn't have 10 travel calls. Every time he touches the ball in the paint and stops his dribble, he dances with his feet a lot.
  24. how do I know if a car has Xenon lights? My old Sierra 1500, people used to flash me all the time thinking I had my brights on, but never did. I asked my dealer if they could recalibrate the lights, and they said they couldn't. I generally get blinded by any BMWs on the road, regardless of size.
  25. I’d like to see MLBPA create a franchise at the AA or AAA level. Allow strongly solid Ex-MLB players to play at a low salary to audition for a spot back with an MLB club. But instead of being beholden to the one team giving them an opportunity, they would essentially be a free agent they could be poached at any time
