  1. Roenicke won't comment. He's the Brewers' next manager. I seriously believe this. If he's trying this hard to hide it, he must be the next manager. That said, I would love to have Roenicke. Just... not... Bob Melvin.
  2. Interesting connection here. Were Sveum and Hale ever on the Red Sox at the same time? If so, that could indicate Hale as one of the unknown candidates, and that he could have picked Sveum to stay on the staff... I'm not sure if they were ever on the Sox at the same time, but that could be a very interesting connection. I completely agree that retaining two of the previous staff would point to a younger guy getting the job, since a guy with experience would probably want "his guys" in there.
  3. Alright, looks like my vote is now going to Roenicke. Wallach would be nice, also, as well as Cora. I would not mind Bob Melvin, either, but I'd rather get one of the first-time managers. There's also the fact that a few candidates have obviously not been disclosed, and we could all be completely bowled over with the possibility of Doug Melvin hiring a candidate that nobody knew about. (Reminds me of a mystery book - the person who did it is always the secondary character; introduced and then forgotten. We haven't heard about Juan Samuel in a while...)
  4. Listach is my pick, with Roenicke coming in a close 2nd. I really like both of those guys. As for Randolph, it's just kind of interesting. If he was really such a great managerial candidate as everyone is making him out to be, why has he not interviewed anywhere? There's a plethora of managerial openings out there, and he hasn't even been mentioned. Heck, even Sveum has been interviewed, but not Randolph. The only thing I can think is that he has in some way been guaranteed an interview with either Sandy Alderson or Josh Byrnes once the Mets hire one of those two guys. Otherwise, he's been a non-factor, which is pretty interesting.
  5. If it's those two, how about both? Listach as manager, and have B. Melvin be the experienced bench coach. That would be more than acceptable for me.
  6. PHEW *Wipes forehead* Glad he's gone. Primary competition for Bobby V is eliminated, and I really hope that Doug Melvin takes a long, hard look at Valentine. I guess I can't see why the Mariners would pick Wedge, especially after his previous troubles with Milton Bradley...
  7. Uninspiring? Anything but. People who have a beef with Bobby V have used his record as a problem (barely over .500 and having not won a division in his time), but let's think about it. What did Ken Macha have? He was well over .500 and had won 2 divisions in 4 years. How did that hire work out for us? So, I don't think record or experience is really the most important thing when hiring a manager. The most important thing, is personality. How will this manager connect with the clubhouse, how will he handle his players? Next on the list (more like 1A instead of 2) is decision-making. How will this manager handle his pitching staff (when will he go to the bullpen, pitch counts, etc), how will he handle pinch-hitters, pinch-runners, etc? How will he handle the running game? Experience/record is/are actually the last thing that I personally would look for in this scenario. Good news everybody! We can forget about the possibility of Eric Wedge, as the Mariners hired him! Everyone rejoice!
  8. While having both Cora brothers on the coaching staff would be interesting, I'm not sure Alex Cora has decided to retire and go into managing yet. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif As for Bobby V, sign me up. He certainly would bring the flair to this team that Ken Macha absolutely lacked, and I think he would be able to get along with the young, aloof (for lack of a better word) players on this team. I doubt he'd manage here, but who knows, maybe he views us as a better option than the other two teams (Mariners and Jays) that he has been rumored with.
  9. Okay, if you guys want to complain about Sveum's decisions from over 2 years ago, you should probably make a new thread for it. I don't have a link at the moment, but I've heard that both Ken Macha and Dale Sveum have interviewed with the Pirates about their managerial opening. Interesting... I would not really have a problem with any candidate that has been rumored (with the exceptions of Cecil Cooper and Bob Brenly), but I really wish Doug Melvin would hurry up and get some interviews under way. You can't hire a new manager without conducting an interview (in this specific case).
  10. What's to hate about winning nearly every year? That's the only brand of baseball i care about. They won because of their pitching and defense, and in spite of "Sciosciaball." He bunts, hits and runs, and steals way too much. Now this is interesting. Lack of bunting, hit and runs, and stealing seems to have been one of everyone's main issues with Macha. If we had a manager who would use the bunt, hit and run, and sends the runners, I'd be very happy. Of course, to every man his own. So, when did this become the "Why Dale Sveum is a terrible manager" thread? lol Anyway, I'm a little sad. I haven't heard any rumors about our next manager in over a day. I'm getting bored. I need something, anything. Tell me we're bringing someone in for an interview.
  11. Anyone else find it funny how the media is claiming that Bob Melvin is the favorite for the job, when he HASN'T EVEN INTERVIEWED FOR THE JOB?! Not only has he not interviewed, he hasn't even been asked to come in for an interview. xD That said, I also wouldn't have a problem with Bob Melvin managing the team. I've spoken to the few D-Backs fans out there, and they all loved the guy. Never a bad thing to say about him.
  12. You basically just described Joey Cora. I have always liked Cora, and he definitely deserves a shot. Anthony Witrado had an interesting point about how having a coach on the team that can speak fluent Spanish would probably help with communication for players like Escobar, Gomez, etc. Cora (probably) speaks Spanish, so that could help. Also, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Angels bench coach Ron Roenicke will also interview for the Brewers managerial opening.
  13. For the record, I brought up Joey Cora in posts #64 and #144, and it wasn't mentioned again until your post at #267. I win, it was my idea first :P That said, it seems to be relatively official at this point that Cora will interview for the job, as the (as far as I can tell) first person to interview for the Brewers job. I would be completely behind Doug Melvin if he were to offer Cora the job immediately after this interview. (Random tid bit: Cora wears #28 for the White Sox... If he wants his #28, our #28 is gonna have to go.)
  14. Are we even sure that Ted wants to manage? I thought I had heard something a few days ago that he was worried about his health, and looking for a front-office job to avoid traveling. (Don't quote me on that, I can't think of where I read it) Apparently Juan Samuel is getting plenty of attention. I wonder if Melvin will interview him... I doubt it, but it's another name to throw in.
  15. I agree with Josh's list the most. My list would go like this: 1. Mike Quade2. Randy Ready3. Joey Cora4. Pat Listach5. Ryne Sandberg I honestly want Mike Quade as the manager. I really like what he's done with the Cubs. I just like the way he manages.
  16. "Final announcement on Brewers' field staff expected Monday. Manager Ken Macha's job has been in jeopardy for awhile." - Buster Olney Can't wait until tomorrow, then!
  17. Another manager is about to be available. The Pirates are going to announce after today's game that they have fired John Russell. Not sure if he'd be a good fit here, but I actually liked the way he managed the Pirates.
  18. I honestly don't know. Cappy has certainly earned a spot on a big league roster with his performance since he returned, but I'm not sure if he's going to get a spot on our big league roster. He'd be nice in our rotation, but I'm thinking that DM will be trying to give our younger guys (Rogers, Jeffress) spots in the rotation over a guy like Cappy. (That's also why I think that Dave Bush won't be back)
  19. They were both rookies this year... however, this is not the rookie year, if that makes any sense. They are still considered rookies since they are just arriving here and making their respective debuts. However, they aren't getting much service time, so they will still be rookies when the come up again (next year, or whenever). IE: Axford was a rookie in September last year, but this year is his rookie year. I would take Jeffress, Axford, Lucroy.
  20. Well, I'll be honest. I don't think a single person in all of baseball could have predicted (with a straight face) that Davis would spend most of the year on the DL. He's been easily one of the most durable starters in baseball for his whole career. This offseason, I actually did not care which of Garland or Davis we signed. They have been almost identical pitchers throughout their careers: Garland: 4.34/4.69/4.59 (ERA/FIP/xFIP) with a 23.1 WAR. 70.8% LOB, 45.2% GB, 10.7% HR/FB Davis: 4.38/4.43/4.44 (ERA/FIP/xFIP) with a 23.5 WAR. 72.5% LOB, 44.7% GB, 10.1% HR/FB Only big difference was age, which doesn't matter much since they both would have been on 1-year deals. As for how many more wins, it's hard to say. Garland has that low 0.6 WAR, indicating less than a win. However, he's actually been healthy this season, whereas Davis has not provided a single win and has been injured.
  21. I don't remember that. According to Hardicourt he was interviewed in 2002. I think I'd almost like Don Money only because he's fresh and has ties with a lot of the players. But I admit that's not a solid reason overall. None of the names mentioned do it for me really though. Ack, I got my former Arizona Bobs mixed up. I was thinking of Brenly. I really don't know much about Bob Melvin. Oh, I was about to say, what's your problem with Bob Melvin? But nvm that. I would not at all mind seeing Bob Melvin as the Brewers' next manager. I like his temperament in the dugout. He's not quite Ned Yost, but he's not Ken Macha either. A happy medium, I would say. Just a little interesting that his name is suddenly popping up in almost every rumor surrounding the Brewers' next manager...
  22. Precisely my thoughts. Peterson is probably the one guy we can (almost) guarantee will not be fired this offseason. Consider, also, how bad the Brewers would look for firing a guy after one season or less at a coaching position two years in a row (the "or less" comes from firing Bill Castro last season).
  23. I think once he got paired with Kottaras, he really got into a groove. George knows exactly what Randy wants to throw, and it usually works. Maybe he just needed to get adjusted to his new team, who knows. But I think he's a solid pitcher, and I'd bet he'll have a nice year next year (don't expect #'s like he put up with Dodgers, but I don't think anyone ever did expect that).
  24. Wallach would be a great candidate. Now that Don Mattingly has the Dodgers job locked up for next year, Wallach has actually come out and said he would rather be on a major league coaching staff than managing in the minors again. So, I think he would jump at the chance to manage in the majors, something that the Brewers will of course offer him. Bob Melvin is an intriguing candidate. I'm not sure what he's been up to lately, but I've heard rumors about him managing the Mets. I wonder if DM would hire Bob Melvin just because they have the same last name? xD I'm not sure if I brought him up earlier in the thread or not, but what about Ozzie Guillen's bench coach, Joey Cora?
  25. That's what I thought at first, but if you look more closely, he actually doesn't (anymore). He used to, but he changed his mechanics a bit, and now he doesn't have it. http://i52.tinypic.com/103zuok.jpg I got the best picture I could. In that one, you can see that his elbows do not go above shoulder level, so it's not the Inverted W.
