  1. Fair enough. I'm assuming that the 20% of people would be from a set of mentally competent and capable people who *should* know this. But then that's probably a naive assumption as the study was likely conducted by or for a group that has a certain agenda. Or it's garbage shock statistics, which once again are usually agenda biased and junk. But her answer is what it is. She needs to reply in that context as if my above assumptions were true and that the question was true in terms of facts and genuine in terms of the set of people polled would reasonably be expected to know such an answer. That's the context of the show. Your approach is certainly more scientifically valid but would likely be unacceptable in her situation.....but then why would it? It's certainly the smarter approach...
  2. They're young though. They can only get better. It's not the time to start hating on this young group of guys. Between Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Braun and Hart, we have 5 young guys who are very talented and should get better with more time. Really, we just need a catcher. It's plainly obvious why the Brewers were able to get Estrada. We all thought a ".300 stick for a catcher, not bad". But his OBP is a point higher it seems, he can't run, doesn't throw anyone out and doesn't really call too good a game. In short, he sucks. And he's not young. He needs to be DFA'd or traded to a bad team. But our young guys should get better. Weeks is already covering more field and failing a lot less. Hardy has been a little disappointment. Braun is simply going to have to improve a lot. Hart is OK. They can only get better in every facet of the game.
  3. Bill Hall has stunk this year, it's as simple as that. I know he wasn't 100% and we can only hope that's it. Or he just had a bad year, which happens sometimes. But he has been simply terrible this year. Maybe he got paid and he's lazy now? Whatever it is, I've lose all faith in him this year and he should be a platoon player. Hopefully next year he comes back string and plays like we know he can.
  4. That's probably the problem. It has an outline of the political boundaries of the country, from the Canadian border to the Mexican border. When given a map of the world with no political borders, people are probably looking for the shape of the USA somewhere and not for North America. It sounds insane but I'd imagine it's not too far off. I would imagine given a set of continents that 20% of Americans (and probably of the world, if not more) couldn't point out North America, thus making it impossible to locate the USA. I'd imagine more American's could point out the USA if it was a silhouette defined by its political boundaries.
  5. Our defense is just a killer. Last night we dropped a ball in the outfield and that basically cost us the game. Many people only look at errors for bad defense. That's hardly the case. Errors are total and complete defensive failures. Bad defense is not turning the double play as much, not stopping more infield hits, covering less outfield and not being able to throw guys out. We're not very good at any of these usually and it kills us. If we had an average defense we'd be among the top teams in the NL right now.
  6. Honestly, the question is probably true. I seriously wouldn't doubt if 20% of people couldn't locate a single country on a map. It's sad but we are a country that doesn't believe much in virtue. We value money and celebrities. The virtue of knowledge and thought isn't something a lot of people care about it seems. BTW, she's not going to Arizona, she's going to Appalachian State University. That's the apparent ASU she referenced.
  7. She apparently got a "redo" on the Today Show where she was asked the same question. She still talked about maps. About how her and her friends know how to read maps and that we need to teach more geography to kids so they know how to read maps. Does it really have so much to do with maps? Why is she so obsessed with maps? Maps this,, maps that!!
  8. Wow, that link is rancid. This girl is really, really dumb. She misspelled so many words just terribly. Really, she spelled "Mine", "Myn"? Seriously? Or should I say, "serisously"? She never used question marks when forming a question. Just a terribly written piece of garbage. I have news, she didn't "meltdown" on TV. She's a twit. And if Arizona State University really gave her a full "schlorship"....I've lost a lot of respect for that school.
  9. Neat graph. It's amazing how well a MLB pitcher is able to drill those high corners. He just missed on so many pitches, but kept going at it. The umpire really did call it well and you have to figure a lot of those could be called for strikes, depending on whose umping. Also impressive is how the Cubs didn't really swing at too many bad pitches. Good patience at the plate. They swung at a couple curves in the dirt, so it's easy to see how hard Sheets' curveball is to hit. Could you point me to the original source for that game?
  10. Batting in front of Fielder really makes a player look great. Not taking anything away form Braun, but everyone who has batted in front of Fielder this year has been pretty awesome.
  11. If he knew anything at all, he'd realize it's certainly 42%.
  12. Definitely one of those guys I'd like to see come in to get a single out when needed. But I don't like the idea of him pitching to 3 guys or being expected to get lefties out.
  13. A lot of people didn't like the Linebrick trade at the time. I was a little suspect of it, reading that he hasn't been good at all this year. And for what we gave up. A solid #3 or #4 starter whose cheep is worth something to a team. As with the Suppan signing (which I thought and still think was decent), acquiring 3rd or 4th starters via FA can be VERY expensive.
  14. Those 5 steps are really spot on. For instance, yesterdays game I was in phase 1 as the Cubs were scoring. It turned to anger really quickly as they scored and we were down. I quit watching in anger and left the room. I could hear the TV and we had guys on in the 8th, so I said "if they can score here,.....". Of course they didn't, I was depressed and a little while later I just admitted they're the inferior team and they aren't very good. Wow.
  15. Hungry = angry. Gorged = happy.
