  1. Fair enough. I'm assuming that the 20% of people would be from a set of mentally competent and capable people who *should* know this. But then that's probably a naive assumption as the study was likely conducted by or for a group that has a certain agenda. Or it's garbage shock statistics, which once again are usually agenda biased and junk. But her answer is what it is. She needs to reply in that context as if my above assumptions were true and that the question was true in terms of facts and genuine in terms of the set of people polled would reasonably be expected to know such an answer. That's the context of the show. Your approach is certainly more scientifically valid but would likely be unacceptable in her situation.....but then why would it? It's certainly the smarter approach...
  2. They're young though. They can only get better. It's not the time to start hating on this young group of guys. Between Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Braun and Hart, we have 5 young guys who are very talented and should get better with more time. Really, we just need a catcher. It's plainly obvious why the Brewers were able to get Estrada. We all thought a ".300 stick for a catcher, not bad". But his OBP is a point higher it seems, he can't run, doesn't throw anyone out and doesn't really call too good a game. In short, he sucks. And he's not young. He needs to be DFA'd or traded to a bad team. But our young guys should get better. Weeks is already covering more field and failing a lot less. Hardy has been a little disappointment. Braun is simply going to have to improve a lot. Hart is OK. They can only get better in every facet of the game.
  3. Bill Hall has stunk this year, it's as simple as that. I know he wasn't 100% and we can only hope that's it. Or he just had a bad year, which happens sometimes. But he has been simply terrible this year. Maybe he got paid and he's lazy now? Whatever it is, I've lose all faith in him this year and he should be a platoon player. Hopefully next year he comes back string and plays like we know he can.
  4. That's probably the problem. It has an outline of the political boundaries of the country, from the Canadian border to the Mexican border. When given a map of the world with no political borders, people are probably looking for the shape of the USA somewhere and not for North America. It sounds insane but I'd imagine it's not too far off. I would imagine given a set of continents that 20% of Americans (and probably of the world, if not more) couldn't point out North America, thus making it impossible to locate the USA. I'd imagine more American's could point out the USA if it was a silhouette defined by its political boundaries.
  5. Our defense is just a killer. Last night we dropped a ball in the outfield and that basically cost us the game. Many people only look at errors for bad defense. That's hardly the case. Errors are total and complete defensive failures. Bad defense is not turning the double play as much, not stopping more infield hits, covering less outfield and not being able to throw guys out. We're not very good at any of these usually and it kills us. If we had an average defense we'd be among the top teams in the NL right now.
  6. Honestly, the question is probably true. I seriously wouldn't doubt if 20% of people couldn't locate a single country on a map. It's sad but we are a country that doesn't believe much in virtue. We value money and celebrities. The virtue of knowledge and thought isn't something a lot of people care about it seems. BTW, she's not going to Arizona, she's going to Appalachian State University. That's the apparent ASU she referenced.
  7. She apparently got a "redo" on the Today Show where she was asked the same question. She still talked about maps. About how her and her friends know how to read maps and that we need to teach more geography to kids so they know how to read maps. Does it really have so much to do with maps? Why is she so obsessed with maps? Maps this,, maps that!!
  8. Wow, that link is rancid. This girl is really, really dumb. She misspelled so many words just terribly. Really, she spelled "Mine", "Myn"? Seriously? Or should I say, "serisously"? She never used question marks when forming a question. Just a terribly written piece of garbage. I have news, she didn't "meltdown" on TV. She's a twit. And if Arizona State University really gave her a full "schlorship"....I've lost a lot of respect for that school.
  9. Neat graph. It's amazing how well a MLB pitcher is able to drill those high corners. He just missed on so many pitches, but kept going at it. The umpire really did call it well and you have to figure a lot of those could be called for strikes, depending on whose umping. Also impressive is how the Cubs didn't really swing at too many bad pitches. Good patience at the plate. They swung at a couple curves in the dirt, so it's easy to see how hard Sheets' curveball is to hit. Could you point me to the original source for that game?
  10. Batting in front of Fielder really makes a player look great. Not taking anything away form Braun, but everyone who has batted in front of Fielder this year has been pretty awesome.
  11. If he knew anything at all, he'd realize it's certainly 42%.
  12. Definitely one of those guys I'd like to see come in to get a single out when needed. But I don't like the idea of him pitching to 3 guys or being expected to get lefties out.
  13. A lot of people didn't like the Linebrick trade at the time. I was a little suspect of it, reading that he hasn't been good at all this year. And for what we gave up. A solid #3 or #4 starter whose cheep is worth something to a team. As with the Suppan signing (which I thought and still think was decent), acquiring 3rd or 4th starters via FA can be VERY expensive.
  14. Those 5 steps are really spot on. For instance, yesterdays game I was in phase 1 as the Cubs were scoring. It turned to anger really quickly as they scored and we were down. I quit watching in anger and left the room. I could hear the TV and we had guys on in the 8th, so I said "if they can score here,.....". Of course they didn't, I was depressed and a little while later I just admitted they're the inferior team and they aren't very good. Wow.
  15. Hungry = angry. Gorged = happy.
  16. I pretty much stop at anger. I try not to deny things, but I guess everyone does as it holds off the anger a little longer. It gives me time to be angry at other thing as I prepare for anger on the thing I'm currently denying. Bargaining, depression and acceptance? Those aren't my kind of avenues. I'm a man, I have 2 emotions: Happy and angry.
  17. They will have a lot more HD content soon, as others have mentioned. You need to get a Satellite capable of receiving HD and a box too. They'll tell you what you need when you call them. You receive the HD channels and all the regular old channels. Your TV has no problem showing the old stations because your box takes the old signals and upconverts them to an "HD" signal. So the picture isn't very good (it's typical 480i resolution) but it's there. It's like watching regular old TV. Also the aspect ratio is 4:3 instead of 16:9, so you'll have black bars on each side of the picture. In short, don't worry, you'll get all the HD and non-HD channels. HD channels will be in pristine 1080i or 720p with a 16:9 aspect ratio and the non-HD channels will be of lower quality obviously and in 4:3 aspect ratio. THE DIRECT TV CAVEAT IN MILWAUKEE: Direct TV in Milwaukee doesn't have an HD contract with CBS here, so you will NOT get CBS (channel 58) in HD in the Milwaukee area. You get every other local network in HD, but not CBS. This sucks because they carry a lot of golf and the NFL. So, you have to get an OTA (over the air) antenna, put it outside and send the OTA signals to your TV as well if you want to watch CBS in HD. Major pain the butt for a single station. But it's kinda worth it because you get every local station in HD and the signal is perfect for OTA signals. The picture quality will be greater with these signals than the one Direct TV sends you. Direct TV compresses the signal some to make more bandwidth available.
  18. Your sarcasm is kind of a generalization. A lot of Miss America winners are pretty bright. http://www.missamerica.org/our-miss-americas/2000/2003.asp This one was accepted to Harvard Law. Now, if you had said "Beauty Pageant contestant a moron" it might have worked better. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/smile.gif I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest the Harvard Law Student was the exception. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But yeah I was just being a sarcastic jerk. It's an easy target. Some of them could be making significant contributions to quantum physics for all I know. A large percentage might be qualified for Wal-Mart Door Greeter even.
  19. Breaking news: Ms. America contestant a moron! Film at 6.
  20. So this sets a precedent. It is OK to fire a manager in late August/early September if it's below .500......
  21. Can't you get an occupational license? It sounds like you're between a rock and a hard place right now. You need to pay off tickets and maybe hire a lawyer to help you get your car back so you can make money, but you can't make money until this happens. Can someone loan you the money to pay off the tickets and get a lawyer? Or you could just drive to work anyways. Obey all speed laws, etc. Don't make any mistakes while driving. Only drive to work and home. It won't be the worst thing if you get caught. Just a ticket.
  22. You can't look at it that way. You have to look at it as buying "game enhancers". They cost a lot, sure, but they're like any other premium thing. I usually buy the tall ones which are 20 or 22 Oz. They're $7.25. In a bar 2 bottles of beer cost me around $7.00 (3.50 a piece you figure). So it's fairly even. You pay a slight premium (34 cents VS 29 cents an ounce) but that's how it goes. It's not much worse than going to a bar. And go to other stadiums. At Shea it cost $7.00 for a 12 oz beer! Now that's a rip off! Now, if I had full season tickets and went to like 70 games, it'd be a different story. I have a Friday night ticket package so it's an extension of going out really. I don't buy beer during day games usually.
  23. Yeah, I saw a guy with that thing. It looked really good.
  24. The trick is to not go when everyone else goes. After the third inning is when everyone gets up to get things. Before the game can be rough if you don't get there about 10 minutes before first pitch. I usually don't have problems. People seem to clump into the same lines creating longer lines than necessary. It seems like there are always shorter lines at the ends of the stands. I've seen people 10 deep in lines and I walk up to another line with like 2 people in it. I don't get it. Maybe they like lines a lot? Also, avoid lines being worked by old women. No offense to old people or women but they don't work well with the computers I've noticed and are slow overall. Really, you want to look for lines run by men in their 30's or 40's. These guys seem to work the fastest. The know how to poor a beer too. Also, if one stand is bunched up walk to another. Very often in the Terrace behind home plate where they have 2 stands very close, the one closer to third base is always more busy than the other one. I don't know why. Maybe because it's closer to the bathroom? I fancy myself a Miller Park concession pro. I usually find a way to avoid lines. I usually get up before the last out of an inning because the lines will be much shorter. It's rare I miss any action.
  25. It would add to their collection of lefties! Honestly though, I'd imagine baseball would let these teams sell players to the highest bidders first to recoup some money. The players union would never go for a retraction.
