  1. I wouldn't put him in the top 50, either. Baseball Reference has his JAWS7 (best seven seasons by WAR) 13th all-time....for a right fielder. A lot of people have played this game. There have been a lot of great players, and if you're on the list of the 50 greatest players to ever play the game, you're likely one of the five or six best players at your position in history. Ichiro is nowhere near the best right fielder to ever play the game. Players in right field that are easily ahead of Ichiro Suzuki: Babe Ruth Hank Aaron Stan Musial Mel Ott Frank Robinson Shoeless Joe Jackson Roberto Clemente Al Kaline Tony Gwynn Other right fielders I would put ahead of Ichiro: Reggie Jackson Sam Crawford Dave Winfield Paul Waner That's at a bare minimum ten right fielders in baseball's history that were superior players. I didn't include Larry Walker, though a case could be made for him, too. I think people are overrating Ichiro's place in history because he's so likable. Great pure hitter, real good base stealer. Good outfielder. And he'll definitely be a Hall of Famer. 3,000 hits with a .314 lifetime average will see to it. But he has no power, whatsoever. None. In 10,300 career plate appearances, he has 349 doubles, 92 triples, and 113 home runs. That gives him a terrible career .400 SLG. A 100 OPS + is Major League average. His carerer OPS + is 108. Too many other players have outperformed him. Definitely a top 50 player. Where in the top 50 I am not sure but he is a sure top 50 player in MLB history.
  2. I really like Ichiro, too, but one of the 20 greatest players in history? Ah, no.
  3. There is no justification for taking Bruce over Braun....absolutely none. Braun finished 5th in the NL outfield vote, and has a 2.6 WAR. Bruce wasn't even in the top 15 in the NL OF vote, and has a 0.2 WAR. Screw Terry Collins.
  4. Marte's dWAR this year is 0.6. Braun's is 0.3. Not that big a difference when you look at the offensive production gap. Marte has an .826 OPS. Braun's is .894.
  5. Syndergaard and Cespedes are likely both going to miss the game. So, an outfield spot opens up. And that will go to Marte, because even though Braun leads him in virtually every statistic (or did before his 0 for 4 last night), Marte has the magical WAR. Doesn't matter that Braun has a better range factor, 2 fewer errors, the same number of assists (in a few less chances)--WAR is all anybody looks at.
  6. I'm voting my little fingers off. Also, tweet #VoteBraun
  7. I'm so sick of people fluffing Carlos Gonzalez. He's absolutely awful away from Coors Field. at home: .365 AVG, 13 HR, 37 RBI, .405/.723/1.128 everywhere else: .274 AVG, 5 HR, 14 RBI, .331/.415/.748 Yeah, that screams All Star.
  8. Braun snubbed. What a joke. 4th in the NL in hitting, top ten in OPS, and he was fifth in the outfield vote.
  9. One would think a guy named "Gunnar" should be able to throw the ball pretty hard. Sign him up.
  10. He's closer to an 1.100 OPS, actually. In the nine games prior to today, Braun's batted .351. 13 for 37 with 4 doubles and 3 home runs, slashing .375 OBP/.703 SLG/ 1.078 OPS. True, but in the last 7 games he's around a 900 ops.
  11. Brilliant. At this rate, Braun will be below .300 by the All Star break...hell, by next week. Ten days ago, he had the second highest average in the Majors. In the high .360s. Now he's at .316. He's clearly not right, but our idiot manager, who is sure to give him a rest day off when he's hitting the cover off the ball, is running him into the ground when he's obviously hurting.
  12. Braun needs to sit. He's absolutely useless at the plate right now. The guy just cannot stay healthy.
  13. If he keeps it up, and stays healthy, I guarantee they will be talking about him by July 1. People are not talking about him now because of his nagging injuries and large salary. The brewers have played 46 total games and Braun has appeared in only 38. That's a 75% clip and means Braun is on pace to play in only 121 games. At his salary level, I would think teams would want at least 140 games out of him. Um, 38 of 46 games played is 83%, not 75%. On a pace to play 134 games. I agree he needs to avoid missing time, but the guy's doing pretty well for having off season back surgery. And why would a guy's salary have any impact on commenting on what a great season he is having? Braun's hitting .361 with 9 HR and 30 RBI, OPS of 1.026. He's second in batting, third in SLG and OPS. What he makes is irrelevant, unless you're discussing his being trade bait. If you're talking about the best players in the game right now, Braun is clearly one of them.
  14. Actually, if you throw out Braun's atypical 2014 season, he has had better than a 1:2 walk to strikeout ratio overall since 2009: 2009: 57 BB, 121 K 2010: 56 BB, 105 K 2011: 58 BB, 93 K 2012: 63 BB, 128 K 2013: 27 BB, 56 K 2015: 54 BB, 115 K 2016: 17 BB, 23 K 332 BB, 641 K If you include his 2014 season, he only needs 4 walks without a strikeout to be exactly at a 1:2 ratio since 2009. As of right now, since '09, he's walked 373 times, and K'd 754 times. And this season, he's better than 1.5 BB: 1 K
  15. Of course, nobody in the media is talking about Ryan Braun, who has now gotten on base in 27 straight games, and is hitting .394 in the month of May.
  16. Couldn't he just bunt his way on for a hit, with that speed? Or, is asking him to square up for a bunt beyond his skill package?
  17. I'm about 20 minutes from the current park. Believe me, there is nothing poorly designed about it. It's a beautiful venue for baseball. This is a ridiculous waste of taxpayer money.
  18. I feel really bad for Jimmy Nelson. Though he still clearly has room for improvement (far too many walks), he's given up only 3 earned runs over his last three starts (a 1.27 ERA over 21 1/3 IP), and he's got nothing to show for it. He'll be 0-1 in those starts. The Brewers have scored a grand total of two runs in those 21 1/3 innings.
  19. Yeah, fawn over Madden. The Cubs are one hit from being 0-2 in this series to a team with the lowest payroll in baseball, with their best hitter on the bench. On a really maddening note, Khris Davis went yard again tonight. Four home runs in the last 24 hours; most home runs in the Majors since the start of last August. And, to boot, he walked twice. Look out, here comes a .300 OBP. Well, maybe not... Just keep thinking about Orlando Arcia. That's what I'm looking forward to. But Jimmy really deserved to win tonight. Actually, he's deserved wins his last two outings. 15 1/3 IP against the Padres and Cubs, allowed 2 earned runs, got 1 run of support. One loss, one no decision.
  20. Braun is now hitting .465 in the month of May; 20 hits in 43 at bats. That's nuts. Slash line is .511/.674/1.185.
  21. Braun batting .419 (18 for 43) with a 1.096 OPS over his ten game hitting streak. The thing that most impresses me about Braun right now is his walk and strike out rates. He's on a pace to walk about 70 times, while striking out fewer than 100 times. We're seeing a re-emergence of the MVP player from 2011-2012. Since August 1st of last year, Braun is hitting .350 (93 for 266) with 48 runs scored, 17 doubles, 1 triple, 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 11 stolen bases, 33 walks vs 46 strike outs. His slash line is .420/.568/.988.
  22. The Brewers still have to put butts in the seats. I understand the rebuild, but getting rid of Braun seems like a bad idea. If he's not there, what motivates fans to come to the park, and spend their money? There are some guys on the team now/on the way with real potential, but Braun is still one of the best hitters in the game when healthy, and watching him launch balls into the seats makes losing more acceptable. Without him there, the fun factor decreases greatly, and I'm not so sure that attendance doesn't plummet.
