  1. Yes, he did. He could be surly with reporters (that started after he decided to go fishing off-season instead of going to see his mother), and sometimes with the fans. But he was a good man overall. He was like Ruth in that he absolutely went out of his way to help kids in any way he could. He did a lot of work with the Jimmy Fund in Boston. Then there was his service in not one, but two wars. Ted is an American icon, and the best pure hitter to ever play the game imo. Cobb was great, too. Joe Jackson was amazing with Black Betsy. But Williams was an artist. I'd give my left leg if I could jump in a time machine, and go back in time to watch him play a game in his prime.
  2. Yup. They won the PCL title that year, iirc. You're old. 42, not that old. I just read a lot of baseball books, and watch a lot of baseball documentaries, especially now since I'm collecting vintage and pre-war baseball cards. I've got Ted Williams' HBO special on my DVR, and probably watch it at least once a week.
  3. Loading the Roku up. They patched new software last night, let's see if the horrible lag/skipping/pixelation/audio dropping out issues are finally fixed...three weeks into the season.
  4. I didn't. I knew it right away. But then I read a lot of baseball history. A lot.
  5. interesting, I am first thinking Winfield, but I know he never actually played a day in the minors so that would be a good trick question...I'll go with Ozzie Smith The wording makes the question tricky. Think Padres before they were a MLB club. Ted Williams was with the Padres when they were PCL.
  6. Am I reading this correct? Lucroy singled, then was caught stealing, right before a walk and a single. Gotta love Ron.
  7. This is what the Padre bullpen did to us tonight. http://imageshack.com/a/img135/4083/prince.gif
  8. Great. Just great. First time Fig throws more than two innings, he gives up what will be the game winner.
  9. Come on guys, happy thoughts. We're going to win this, and we're going to win it now. And my MLB.tv will crash again when it happens.
  10. Yikes. When this offense is good, it's pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. When it's bad, it's pretty bad. And oddly enough, it's at home where we're having problems. In 11 games, we've scored 28 runs. 2.5 runs per game. Yo deserved better. BTW, this team really needs a day off. 14 straight without a break. It would have been 18 in a row if not for the postponed game in Philly.
  11. Horrible game for Brauny tonight. That ball was in the dirt. He had no business swinging at that.
  12. Come on, Brauny. Don't need a home run here. A double will do it!
  13. Can we please score a darned run? My God, you'd think we were facing Sandy Koufax.
  14. No way I'm giving up on Davis. Not even close. He will get it going. So will Segura. Oh, I love when Brauny is locked in. With a bad thumb, he's leading the NL in runs scored, fifth in home runs, sixth in SLG and RBI.
  15. The last four games, we've been outscored 22 to 8. Something needs to change, and quickly, or this great start is going to be completely wasted. Segura needs to sit. Now. Get Bianchi in there, and give Jean a few days, or a week, to get that shoulder stronger. Somebody sit Braun and Davis down, and explain to them what a walk is. They have 108 at bats between them. Braun has 2 walks, Davis has 1. Please, just give first base to Halton or Morris. Enough is enough. I don't care if they hit .200. They're going to be better than Reynolds and Overbay. I'm not going to say anything about Roenicke.
  16. He just got the NL MVP to foul out. Isn't this the point of using Wang, to get the outs to complete an out of control game and save the better RPs' arms? It was 5-2 when he came in. The Brewers, coming into the game, had the best record in baseball. Were we conceding the game to Pittsburgh down by 3?
  17. All the things that were working just a few days ago...are not working right now. Our pitching has been outstanding for the first few weeks of the season, but it's regressed a little. But the hitting really has taken a step back. It seems we're not exhibiting any patience at the plate. Look at the OBPs of the hitters in our lineup tonight: Gomez .384 Segura .267 Braun .298 <---??? Ramirez .388 Lucroy .403 Davis .283 Reynolds .267 Gennett .357 Nearly half our lineup has an OBP below .300. This is very disturbing to me.
  18. Something is obviously not right with Segura. .267 OBP and a .298 SLG. How about we bench him for a while, and rest that shoulder? Hell, Wang's not being used as a pitcher, can he play shortstop? I mean, Bianchi must be hurt, too, because we're not seeing him.
  19. Just checking in. The MLB.tv feed of the game is completely unwatchable, so you guys are going to be my eyes and ears tonight. Thanks, MLB. Nearly three weeks into the season, and I still can't watch the games I paid $130 for.
