  1. Darrien Miller and Wes Clarke led off the Wisconsin half of the 6th inning with two more hits, later scoring on a wild pitch and Antonio Pinero single. The Rattlers have cut it to 6-5. Trevor Tietz escaped the 2-on, nobody out jam in the 2nd inning. Mudcats lead 1-0, entering 3rd inning. Jon Singleton doubled and Abraham Almonte walked with 2 outs in the 8th inning, but the Sounds weren't able to score. They're down 7-3. Biloxi has 2 aboard to start the 5th inning, on a Thomas Dillard walk and Jakson Reetz infield single. They trail 4-3.
  2. RHP Trevor Tietz comes for the Mudcats as the teams are ready to resume play after a rain delay. Miguel Segura was limited to 1 inning of work (30 pitches), plus two walks to open the 2nd inning before the delay.
  3. The Sounds are not quite ready to pack it in. Alex Jackson doubled in David Dahl to cut it to 7-3 in the 7th inning. Biloxi's Andy Otero has yet to rediscover his 2021 dominance, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs to Birmingham in the 4th inning. The Shuckers trail yet again, 4-3.
  4. RHP Miguel Guerrero is back in action for the Timber Rattlers for the first time since May 5th, entering in the bottom of the 5th inning.
  5. Hey hey - Noah Campbell came through with a 2-run, 1-out single for the Shuckers after Felix Valerio had put the defense under serious pressure (infield hit, two stolen bases). A wild pitch then brought in another run. Biloxi has a 3-2 lead in the 3rd inning, still with runners on the corners and 2 outs.
  6. Pete Strzelecki came in for Dylan File in the 6th inning and just gave up a 3-run jack to 25-year old IF Charles LeBlanc (his 7th of the year; 1.079 OPS). Nashville trails 7-2 and this one has officially gotten out of hand. Tyler Gillies came in for Max Lazar to pitch the 4th inning, but gave up a 2-run homer to .149-hitting Cam Williams (his 7th of the year; yes, he's homered on 7 of his 11 hits through 74 at-bats). Wisconsin trails 6-3 entering the 5th inning.
  7. Wes Clarke waited for his pitch and smacked it over the wall in center field (his 3rd of the year), scoring Darrien Miller (who's singled both times up). Wisconsin's only down 4-3.
  8. Timber Rattler Manager Joe Ayrault has been ejected in the 3rd inning in Quad Cities. I'm guessing he did not enjoy the strike zone which Max Lazar has been forced to work with. Unfortunately, another 2-run blast has pushed the River Bandits' lead to 4-1.
  9. David Dahl has homered (3rd of the year) to cut the Nashville deficit to 4-2 in the 5th inning.
  10. Tyler Black has hit his 2nd home run of the season, cutting the Wisconsin deficit to 2-1 in the 3rd inning after Max Lazar had given up a 2nd inning solo shot. Dylan File ran into 4th inning difficulty (3 singles and a walk with nobody out), but limited the damage to one run by striking out three consecutive Jumbo Shrimp. Sounds trail 4-1. Biloxi loaded the bases with 2 outs in the first inning, but wasn't able to score. Still down 2-0. Carolina's in a rain delay, leading 1-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, though the Woodpeckers have 2-on with nobody out.
  11. Keston Hiura has homered again. That's 3 home runs and 5 hits over the past two days. But the Sounds trail 3-1 in the 4th inning.
  12. Early returns: - Carolina leads 1-0 on a wild pitch in the 2nd inning - Wisconsin trails 1-0 after giving up two hits to start off the game - Biloxi gave up a 2-run homer in the 1st inning. Trail 2-0 - Nashville gave up a 3-run blast in the 3rd inning. Down 3-0
  13. The AA Biloxi Shuckers are now 1-9 in the month of May, handing the ball to 29-year old LHP Andy Otero (2.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 28 1/3 innings) to lead them to victory tonight. 2B Felix Valerio has a 6-game hitting streak and hit his 4th home run yesterday: 1 - Sal Frelick - LF 2 - Garrett Mitchell - CF 3 - Joey Wiemer - RF 4 - Felix Valerio - 2B 5 - Thomas Dillard - 1B 6 - Jakson Reetz - C 7 - Noah Campbell - DH 8 - Cam Devanney - SS 9 - Gabe Holt - 3B X - Andy Otero - P
  14. The Mudcats need a win in Fayetteville to avoid falling to below .500 on the season, as RHP Miguel Segura (5.21 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 in 19 innings) gets the start. Our young squad is 2nd in the 12-team Carolina League in doubles (52), but 2nd-last in home runs (16) through 30 games:
  15. - OF Abraham Almonte returned to AAA Nashville's active roster from the 7-day injured list
  16. The Sounds will try to take a commanding 3-1 series lead in Jacksonville, with RHP Dylan File aiming to replicate his last start (5 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits). Manager Rick Sweet welcomes DH/OF Abraham Almonte back from injury. Yesterday's 2-homer, 7-RBI man Keston Hiura can be found in left field today:
  17. Wisconsin goes for a 7th straight win and 4th in-a-row in Quad Cities, as RHP Max Lazar (3.31 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 5.5 K/9 in 16 1/3 innings) gets the starting honors tonight (with LHP Russell Smith as back-up innings eater? - we'll know soon enough). 2B Tyler Black went 2-for-4 yesterday with 4 RBIs to raise his average to .302 and OPS to .886 (67 plate appearances). Note: SS Ethan Murray was scratched from the original lineup, so that's a possible injury worth watching. In addition, 21-year old RHP Miguel Guerrero (who was throwing 53 pitches a game) hasn't pitched since leaving a game early on May 5th:
  18. Keston Hiura drove in seven runs as Nashville cruised. Clutch hitting (including three triples) turned ten hits into ten runs for a Wisconsin victory, while Biloxi produced only three runs on 11 hits in a loss. The frustrated Mudcats left 11 men on base in their defeat. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Keston Hiura drove in seven runs as Nashville cruised. Clutch hitting (including three triples) turned ten hits into ten runs for a Wisconsin victory, while Biloxi produced only three runs on 11 hits in a loss. The frustrated Mudcats left 11 men on base in their defeat. Keston Hiura (2) and Mark Mathis (1) hit three home runs over the first five innings to give Ethan Small plenty of cushion in a Nashville 10-1 rout in Jacksonville. The Timber Rattlers produced a similar scoreline 10-2 in Quad Cities, though the runs came late and without any long balls. I’m sure Wisconsin’s Tristan Peters and Tyler Black enjoyed some rest after recording a combined three triples in the game. By contrast, Biloxi and Carolina missed several chances to knock in runs, with each dropping their second consecutive game of the week. Game Balls go to Hiura, Mark Mathias, Ethan Small, Peters and Black. Transactions: RHP Ryne Moore promoted to High-A Wisconsin from Low-A Carolina RHP Stiven Cruz promoted to Low-A Carolina from DSL Brewers1 RHP Justin Bullock activated from AA Biloxi’s 7-day injured list Game Action: Carolina Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Fayetteville 7, Carolina 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Mudcats’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Mascai and Cerny Lead Fayetteville Offense to Second Win Over Mudcats As is often the case in sports and life, you’ve got to take advantage of the chances when they come, lest you regret it later. In this one, the Mudcats stranded five runners over the first three innings and six more over the final three innings, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position in their loss. RHP Alexander Cornielle took the loss after yielding two runs in the first inning and then giving up a two-run jack to .194-hitting Victor Mascal in the 4th inning to fall behind 4-2. However, let's take strong encouragement from his eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings, which looks like a sign of progress for the young hurler. That Woodpecker lead steadily grew to 7-2 by the 7th inning before the Mudcats loaded the bases with one out in the 8th inning. Credit must be given to Fayetteville’s Ian Foggo, who escaped that jam in his first appearance of the season, striking out six Carolina batters over the final two innings of the game. Performances of Note: Oswel Leones – 2-5, double Arbert Cipion – 1-3, triple, BB, RBI Hendry Mendez – 1-3, 2 BBs, SB Alexander Cornielle (Loss) – 4 2/3 IP, 4 R (3 ER), 5 H, 2 BBs, 1 WP, 8 Ks Junior Montero – 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Miguel Segura (5.21 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 in 19 innings) is scheduled to start, as Carolina needs a win to tie up the series at two games apiece. However, let’s be on the lookout to see whether newly-promoted RHP Stiven Cruz gets his first full season action. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wisconsin 10, Quad Cities 2 Box Score / Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers’ website, game details: Timber Rattlers Take Sixth Straight Win Although the final score suggests a blowout, Wisconsin actually trailed 2-0 after three innings in this one before the bats came to life in a big way. Kudos to Joe Gray Jr. and Ethan Murray for gunning down a River Bandit at third base to end a first inning threat. OF Tristan Peters collected Wisconsin’s first clutch hit, a triple in the 4th inning to score Zavier Warren (who’d walked), which 1B Wes Clarke followed up with a sacrifice fly to knot the contest at 2-2. An infield single by 2B Tyler Black accompanied by a Quad Cities throwing error gave the Timber Rattlers a 3-2 lead in the 5th inning, with RHP Justin Jarvis ultimately earning the win, though supported by RHP Robbie Baker's excellent 2 2/3 innings of scoreless work. Still tight heading into the 7th inning, Wisconsin opened the gap via an Alex Hall RBI-double, run scoring wild pitch and then a Tyler Black sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-2. In the bottom half, another solid defensive play (this time OF Micah Bello throwing out a River Bandit at home) wiped out another Quad Cities threat. The 8th inning saw Peters (another triple), Clarke (run-scoring single) and Tyler Black (3-run triple) again combine to put the game out of reach. Performances of Note: Tristan Peters – 3-5, 2 triples, RBI Tyler Black – 2-4, triple, SF, 4 RBIs Alex Hall – 2-3, double, BB, RBI Carlos D. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Birmingham 5, Biloxi 3 Box Score / Game Log Via the Shuckers’ website, game details: Biloxi Falls To Birmingham Despite 11 Hits The return of RHP Justin Bullock, an early 3-1 lead and usually-solid RHP Carlos Luna on the mound for the middle innings looked like perfect ingredients for a Shuckers’ victory, but it was not to be on this day. Bullock hadn’t appeared in a game since leaving his first start on April 8th early, so the team must have been excited to have their dependable starter back on the mound. Bullock was limited to 35 pitches over two innings, exiting tied at 1-1 thanks to a Felix Valerio solo shot. Luna looked to have things in hand with a clean 3rd inning, followed by a two-run double by Jakson Reetz in the bottom half of the inning to score Garrett Mitchell and Joey Wiemer (who’d both singled). However, five consecutive Baron hits opened the top of the 5th inning to re-knot the game at 3-3 before Birmingham’s Jose Rodriguez produced a two-run, two-out single to take a 5-3 lead which held up the rest of the way. Credit goes to JT Hintzen, though, for entering with the bases loaded and one out, then stranded all three runners (soft infield line out, strikeout). Unfortunately, Biloxi was unable to match that clutch hitting, failing to score despite a one-out single (Brent Diaz) in the 6th inning and leadoff 7th and 8th inning singles (Noah Campbell, Thomas Dillard respectively). In addition to Hintzen, Nash Walters and Luis Contreras must also be recognized for giving their offense a chance, as the three relievers gave up zero runs over the final 4 2/3 innings. Performances of Note: Joey Wiemer – 2-4, double Garrett Mitchell – 2-4 Felix Valerio – 1-4, HR, RBI Jakson Reetz – 1-4, double, 2 RBIs Brock Holt – 1-4, SB Justin Bullock – 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BBs, 0 Ks Carlos Luna (Loss) – 2 1/3 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 K JT Hintzen – 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 1 K Nash Walters – 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Luis Contreras – 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: Biloxi is counting on LHP Andy Otero (2.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 9.2 K/9 in 28 1/3 innings) to come through win a dominant effort to end their two-game skid and tie up this week’s series with Birmingham at 2-2. Nashville Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Nashville 10, Jacksonville 1 Box Score / Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details: Small Shines, Hiura Homers Twice in Sounds Victory If anyone needed a reminder that 2B Keston Hiura can hammer right-handed pitching, they certainly got it in this Nashville blowout. After LHP Ethan Small once again avoided big hits despite struggling with walks (two in the first inning, one to lead off the second inning), the Nashville offense blew up the game in the 3rd inning, starting with Mark Mathias’ 3rd homer of the season. Then after young prospects Mario Feliciano and Brice Turang each singled, Hiura pulled a two-out, 0-1 pitch out to left field for a three-run blast, his first since recently being optioned to AAA. Unfortunately, Hiura helped give a run back with a throwing error in the bottom of the 3rd inning, but he made up for it with a two-out, full count homer the other way in the 5th inning, scoring Weston Wilson (who’d doubled) and effectively putting the game out of reach at 6-1. With Small striking out nine batters in just five innings, the Sounds were comfortable on this evening. However, even with that large cushion, RHP Zack Brown and Luke Barker still took their work very seriously, combining to throw four hitless, scoreless innings to close it out. Performances of Note: Keston Hiura – 3-4, 2 HR, HBP, 7 RBIs Mark Mathias – 3-4, HR, RBI Weston Wilson – 2-5, double Mario Feliciano – 2-4 Brice Turang – 1-3, 2 BBs Ethan Small (Win) – 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 BBs, 1 WP, 1 balk, 9 Ks Zack Brown – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K Luke Barker – 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 Ks Friday’s outlook: RHP Dylan File (3.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 6.3 K/9 in 27 1/3 innings), will try to replicate his last start, in which he gave up only three hits and no runs over five innings, as Nashville aims for a 3-1 series lead over Jacksonville. 20. RHP Justin Bullock returns to AA Biloxi after being sidelined with injury for 5 weeks, as the club tries to take a 2-1 series lead at home against Birmingham. DH/C Brent Diaz has homered in his last 2 games, giving him 4 on the year:
  21. The High-A Timber Rattlers have won 5 games in a row and send RHP Justin Jarvis (6.66 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 6.7 K/9 in 24 1/3 innings) to the hill to keep the streak alive at Quad Cities. 3B Zavier Warren is having success after starting the season slowly (.880 OPS in last 76 plate appearances). Note the actual positions: Black - 2B, Peters - DH, Clarke - 1B, Rodriguez - LF, Bello - RF, Hall - C
  22. Low-A Carolina is also tied 1-1 in their series in Fayetteville, with RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, 8.5 K/9 in 18 innings) starting today and hoping for his first victory of 2022. DH/1B Jesus Chirinos comes in with a 7-game hitting streak though his OPS is still lagging (.550 OPS in 105 plate appearances):
  23. AAA Nashville is tied 1-1 in their series in Jacksonville, with LHP Ethan Small (1.98 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 12.2 K/9 in 27 1/3 innings) on the mound tonight aiming to bounce back from a rare tough outing. CF/SS Brice Turang is basically unstoppable at this point (3-for-5 yesterday with his 3rd home run; hit safely in 16 of last 17 games):
  24. Carolina tries to take a 2-0 series lead at Fayetteville, with RHP Israel Puello hoping to put his early season challenges behind him (9.53 ERA, 1.88 WHIP, 13.2 K/9 in 17 innings). SS Eduardo Garcia had the game-winning, 11th inning hit yesterday and is hitting in the 3rd slot today:
  25. High-A Wisconsin strives for an overall 5th straight win and 2-0 series lead in Quad Cities. LHP Antoine Kelly, who was superb in his last start (5 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 1 walk, 10 Ks), is today's Rattler starter. Leadoff DH/2B Tyler Black had a 3-hit day yesterday, including his first homer of 2022 to raise his OPS to .844 in 58 plate appearances:
