I like what Contreras brings and he certainley could DH. But good young Catchers like Quero don't come along that often either. I would say explore and early arbitration year buy out contract with Contreras and give Quero a complete full year at AAA to be ready next year in the bigs. That would be quite a combo for many years to come.

After Fridays signings the Brewers have 18 players under contract for 2023 at $ 90,384,960.00 If we take the high end arby offer to Corbin Burnes that piushes it to 19 players at $101,134,960.00 Last years was 133 mill give or take leaves 29 mill or so in play if Mark wants to hold the line on spending. Question : Is the Burnes semi stalemate an attempt to keep negotiations open for a longer term deal ? Many on these pages think so. What say you ? Singing Wade Miley to a one year deal to be your 4th or 5th starter makes me believe another trade may be in the offing. Lauer ( because he is young and as has excellent trade value) along with Houser and/or Huira and/or Taylor could be on the move. its no secret the Brewers would like a right handed bat for OF or a young 3rd Baseman to add to roster. Huira's signing signals two things 1-They have established a cost if they can find a trade partner and 2-Since he has no options left they will not DFA him. If thats the case we may see him on the roster as IB-2B-DH-OF backup. The Brewers are not ready to cut bait with a former 1st Round Pick. I believe its 100% Mitchell and Turang break camp for opening day, its 50% on Frelick and 20% on Weimer Of the remaining free agents none are really attractive and fit the Brewers plans. Now that Turner temptation is gone I will admit I'm more interested in Drury if the Brewers aren't going to spend on either Burnes, Woodruff, or Willy. During my research for options at 3rd or 2nd both these guys came up as available. Both would be great young additions to the Brewer lineup. Now the issue of what you have to give to get. Arraez would be the most costly of the two. So I’m asking all the Fanatic Trade Value Experts in our group to put together some “ realistic “ trade proposals. What say you fellow Brewer Fanatics “ ?

So with the trade just announced for Owen Miller from the Guardians a few things occurred to me. The Brewers seem fine with mixing and matching 2nd Base and 3rd base this year with combinations of the following : Returning Luis Urias and Mike Brosseau, Promoted Brice Turang, and Obtained Abraham Toro and Owen Miller and whoever else they may find before opening day. They appear to want to hold the line on spending not because Mark A is cheap on the contarary I think they would like to extend one of Burnes / Woodruff and or Willy. Paying 12 mill to 18 mill a year on Turner or Drury just doesnt help them retain the young pitchers we have developed and Willy who is a blossoming star.

I would think they would be interested in one of our four young outfielders or a starting pitcher. I’m reluctant to part with young OF’s but that is where our depth is. Maybe Lauer on the SP end. I would like to see if Huira, Taylor or Ethan Small would move the needle at all ? Your thoughts ?

Now that we have upgraded catcher and designated hitter, what do we do about the third base situation. Since we are not going to trade Burnes, Woodruff, or Adames it looks like a trade for an existing developing or veteran third baseman or signing a Free Agent are the two possibilities. While I like Urias as a utility player, I am not sold on him as a third baseman. His defense is not as good there as it is at either second base or shortstop. Justin Turner is picking up steam but I’m worried about the cost, his age, and what looks like declining offensive numbers. I would prefer Brandon Drury instead. On the trade front I’ve been partial to Yandy Diaz a high average reasonable power guy, he is older but he is under club control through 2024. I would think he could be had for a reasonable trade package. What say you my fellow Brewer Fanatics? Looking for other options here.

Could fit Quintana in I have cap room so that would work. My belief is Urias Is NOT a 3B and would be more comfortable at 2nd which in turn should help him relax more at the plate. I like allowing Turang to break in slowly and he would be a lefty hitting back up for both Adames and Urias. So you are saying Stone as their #7 is rated higher on Trade Value then Pepiot as their #6 ?

I think that any return on Burnes should include a TOR pitcher plus one more and ideally a 3b. It’s not that I don’t like some of the stud Catching prospects listed but with Quero skyrocketing thru and Feliciano on the cusp of hitting the big leagues the need isn’t as big as at 3B. We don’t have anyone close to major league ready.

I agree I don't dislike Taylor but I think Mitchell and Frelick deserve a chance to prove themselves next season. I believe they are both ready. And I would like to get Ruiz involved especially because of his speed. Taylor could be a good chip along with Huira and Houser in another trade. The post regarding Yandy Diaz has me interested since the basis was Taylor perhaps we could expand it with Huira and Houser and get a player from Rays 40 man and / or a Prospect ( I know they would be lower end ones )

Here is my 8 step plan for the 2023 Brewers Payroll. This is my get younger but sign important players to an extension. 1-non tender or allow to become free agents McCutcheon, Rogers, Rosenthal, Narvaez, Wong, Boxberger, Severino, J.Peterson 2-We Trade T.Taylor, Huira, Houser and H.Perez to Colorado for 3B Ryan McMahon ( 64 mill left thru 2027) 3-Sign Hunter Renfro to 1 yr contract in his final Arby year. Yelich will move to primary DH role and Renfro will be primary RF and back up DH. 4-OF promote and sign Mitchell, Frelick and Ruiz for balance of OF spots. 5-IF sign one year contracts for Tellez, Urias, Adames, and Brosseau. Promote Brice Turang to last IF spot. Ryan McMahon is starting 3B 6-Sign Caratini to a one year deal as starting Catcher. Promote either Alex Jackson or Mario Feliciano as back up. 7-Extend Corbin Burnes 6yr 90mill (15 mill annually) Extend Brandon Woodruff 5yr 60mill (12 mill annually) Sign Lauer to one yr deal. Remaining starters Peralta and Ashby are signed to longer deals 8-sign one year deals for D.Williams, M.Bush, Strezlecki, Perdomo, Milner, Cousins and Topa to fill out Bullpen. This is not a tear down it allows us to sign to long term deals both Burnes and Woodruff. Also we obtain a veteran left handed 3B in McMahon who is under contract for 5 more years. Yelich moves to DH allowing 3 prospects Mitchell, Frelick, and Ruiz and opportunity to get to the majors. Also Urias moves to a better fit at 2B and Turang and Brosseau become the lefty righty utilities.
