    It was a good game to watch on MLB Network Saturday night. Juan Baez entered in the 6th, was called out on strikes in the 7th, but hit a hard one-out ground ball infield hit to the right side in the 9th as his team was trying to rally from down 6-5. But his Marlins' teammate rounded 2nd base was thrown out off the bag. The next batter K'd ending the game with Baez stranded as the tying run. In the top of the 9th, Baez made a nice play on a slow roller to 3rd, getting the speedy runner at first base. The next batter, the catcher the Tigers received in the Jack Flaherty trade, did this: Former Pirates/Cubs southpaw Steven Brault on the play-by-play, he now works in the booth for Pittsburgh. As noted in the first tweet above, Ryan Birchard (they emphasized the 2nd syllable, Bur-shard') only threw four pitches. The LH-batter lined it to left, but the left fielder made a nice reach going back.

    The list of players in the initial post of this thread is accurate. Added the three would-be minor league free agents who resigned recently - 1B Ernesto Martinez and catchers Ramon Rodriguez and David Garcia. Also added RHP Sam McWilliams who was a very late-season free agent signee.

    A Darrell Thompson sighting -- Thompson to pitch for United States in Premier12 tournament The 30-year-old Thompson, a left-handed relief pitcher, was selected to the U.S. team after being invited to a training camp in Phoenix. Thompson has been a free agent since he asked for his release from the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A Nashville team in June. Thompson was placed on Nashville’s seven-day development list on June 15, which keeps players on the active roster but doesn’t allow them to pitch in games. The release was granted June 24. In 15 games, Thompson pitched 14 innings and had a 2.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .167 batting average against and 17 strikeouts. Thompson had been with Nashville since May of 2023. "The 2024 Premier12 will feature the world’s 12 top-ranked teams (as of December 31, 2023) in an international competition in Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan. After placing second in the first rendition of the competition in 2015 and fourth in the 2019 tournament, Team USA looks for its first gold medal in Premier12 history. The team will begin its 2024 Premier12 campaign in Guadalajara and Tepic, Mexico, from November 9-14 and will look to advance to Tokyo, Japan, for the final round of the competition." Current Royals farmhand Cam Devanney also on the roster.
