By mid-November (the afternoon of Tuesday November 12th, we believe), teams across MLB will have to set their 40-man rosters in order to identify which minor league players they wish to protect from exposure to the Rule 5 draft in December. Last November saw the Brewers add a slam-dunk player in catcher Jeferson Quero, who was sadly lost for the season on Nashville's Opening Day to a shoulder injury. The Crew also added RHP Bradley Blalock, a move few saw coming. Blalock was just traded to Colorado, along with RHP Yujanyer Herrera, in a deal that netted RH reliever Nick Mears. Finally, Milwaukee made a roster-setting deadline trade with Philadelphia, giving up OF Hendry Mendez and INF Robert Moore, for INF Oliver Dunn, who was immediately added to the team's 40-man. A draft that allows clubs that do not have a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man players from other organizations. Essentially, it is an avenue for teams to identify and give a Major League opportunity to players that they feel have been held back elsewhere. Players signed at age 18 or younger must be added to their club’s 40-man roster within five seasons or else become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players signed at 19 or older must be protected within four seasons. Like the amateur Draft (officially known as the Rule 4 Draft), the Rule 5 Draft is held in reverse order of standings from the previous season. Unlike the amateur Draft, not every club will make a selection in the Rule 5. Those that do must pay $100,000 to the club from which the player was selected, and the player must remain on the new club’s 26-man roster (or injured list) for the entirety of the following season or else be placed on outright waivers. If the player clears waivers, he must be offered back to his original team for $50,000 and can be outrighted to the Minors only if his original team does not take him back. (This prevents teams from pilfering players from other teams and then stashing them in their Minor League system.) When is the Rule 5 Draft? This winter’s Rule 5 Draft will be held Dec. 6. Biloxi Press Release: 3B/1B MIKE BOEVE REINSTATED FROM 7-DAY INJURED LIST BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi Shuckers and Milwaukee Brewers have announced that 3B/1B Mike Boeve has been reinstated from the 7-Day Injured List. The Shuckers’ active roster now stands at 28 players. Boeve was previously placed on the 7-Day Injured List on July 9, 2024. In 53 games with the Shuckers in 2024, Boeve owns a .286/.347/.400 slash line with 9 doubles, 3 triples and 3 home runs. Today marks his first appearance with the Shuckers since June 30 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

Nashville Sounds released 2B Yonny Hernández. Nashville Sounds activated 2B Noah Campbell from the Development List. Nashville Sounds activated LHP Nick Bennett from the Development List. .241/.333/.309 (.642 OPS) in 81 games for Hernandez, age 26. The current Nashville roster shows a full infield component.

Looking forward to when Jeff Hem interviews RHP Easton McGee. McGee grew up in Hopkinsville KY, just 75 miles from Nashville, so the appeal of his two-year minor-league deal with the Brewers is evident. This article with photos includes no quotes, but provides additional background into the appeal of the current 0.00 MLB ERA over McGee's first 9.2 innings. The former Mr. Baseball from Hopkinsville High School took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his first MLB start on April 29, 2023, getting a no decision in a 1-0 Seattle loss at Toronto. McGee retired the first 12 batters he faced before a walk to Matt Chapman to begin the fifth inning. He threw only 64 pitches and struck out two. The Mariners said McGee was the first pitcher in team history to make a start of 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing one hit or less within his first two career games. That start would be his only appearance for the Mariners as arm discomfort led to the discovery that season-ending Tommy John surgery was needed. Depending on how the rest of 2024 goes, the 26-year-old (27 in December) could be a Brewers' October 40-man roster add to protect from Rule 5.
