  1. Catching up on Huntsville audio: Huntsville Pre-Game Audio Interview with Pitching Coach Chris Hook Make sure you're pointing to the WUMP audio archive of May 5th, then go to the 17:00 minute mark -- good stuff... That's from Monday's game -- for now anyway, there's a problem with Tuesday's audio archive...
  2. Link while active, text follows -- Three video links available, one going back to 2007, all posted here previously... New clubhouse is hit with Sounds $850K upgrade boasts comforts, long walk By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Trading convenience for comfort, the Sounds acclimated themselves to the long walk from their new clubhouses - beyond the center-field fence at Greer Stadium - to the third-base dugout during the just-concluded eight-game homestand. The Sounds dressed in the 4,800-square foot facility for the first time prior to their May 1 matchup with Colorado Springs. And while they lost that game, they rebounded with three straight victories over Pacific Coast League leader Salt Lake before losing their series finale Monday. "It's going to be a big benefit to us, a big boost to our morale," pitching coach Stan Kyles said of the structure, built at an estimated cost of $850,000. "It's a lot better to be in a place where you can spread out a little bit and do the things you want to do, which is prepare and think about the game. "If we're going to ask these guys to eat, drink and sleep baseball, you want to have them in a situation where they can do that and be comfortable doing it." The Sounds' portion of the facility was the last to be finalized. The umpires' dressing room and the visiting team's clubhouse were both ready at the April 28 start of the home stand - later than originally planned, but satisfactory nonetheless. "It's been a long time coming," said Scott Martens, player development business manager for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Sounds' major league affiliate. "Last May, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball (officials) came in and reviewed the clubhouse situation, and plans were at that time to construct a new clubhouse and have it ready for Opening Day of this season. We're disappointed it wasn't ready for Opening Day, but I think the players, staff and all were pleased at the end." The Sounds' portion of the clubhouse actually is broken into a players' dressing area, a manager's office, a coaches' dressing area, a players' lounge, a laundry area and a training room as well as storage. While all of those components are nicer than the previous clubhouse that was located underneath the third-base seating area - giving the players and coaches direct access to the dugouts - they're not all significantly larger. "The main locker room is probably right at 1,000 square feet," assistant general manager Joe Hart said. "We probably picked up about 250 feet in the main locker area. The training room is about the same (size); the players' lounge may be a little smaller. "The main thing is, the clubhouse doesn't leak any more. It's more inviting to go out there. I've noticed the players are here earlier than they were in the existing clubhouse." Hart said there are some minor details, but that the building is "95 percent" complete and should be finished when the team returns for a May 15 game against New Orleans. "It's something that's very workable," Martens said. "It's a step in the right direction. This is something we can work with." And while the walk before and after batting practice and games might seem out of the ordinary, Greer Stadium is the seventh in the 16-team PCL with clubhouses located beyond the outfield fences. "It's a breath of fresh air, literally," said pitcher Zach Jackson, who spent the 2006 and '07 seasons with the Sounds "It's nice to have something new - a change of scenery. It's a nice facility; they definitely did a great job with it." And that's the viewpoint the most important to Hart. "The Brewers are frustrated that it took a while to get done, but now that it's done, I think they're happy with it," he said. "You want to keep them happy up there, but you can see in talking to the players, they love it. They're the ones here using it every day."
  3. Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Jeff Weaver photo, text follows -- Sounds Open Road Trip With 4-1 Victory TUCSON, Ariz. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on a high note on Tuesday evening at Tucson Electric Park, scoring a 4-1 victory over the host Sidewinders. Nashville starter Jeff Weaver engaged Tucson right-hander Yusmeiro Petit in a pitcher's duel through the first half of the game. Neither team advanced a runner past second base until Sidewinders left fielder Trent Oeltjen led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a deep solo home run onto the berm in right-center on Weaver's initial pitch of the frame, his first longball of the year. Petit exited after five scoreless innings of four-hit ball and Nashville took immediate advantage of his departure. The Sounds grabbed a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs against Tucson reliever Abe Woody in the top of the sixth. Hernan Iribarren (3-for-5) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Vinny Rottino delivered a game-tying triple to right. Rottino scored the go-ahead run during the next at-bat, scampering home on a Woody wild pitch. AUDIO: Vinny Rottino RBI Triple Brendan Katin gave Nashville some breathing room in the ninth with a two-run home run to center off Sidewinders reliever Leo Rosales, his fourth roundtripper of the year. Adam Heether, who preceded Katin with an inning-opening single, scored on the blast and has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 contests. Weaver (1-1) allowed one run on four hits in his seven innings of work to earn his first victory of the season. Erasmo Ramirez followed with a scoreless eighth before Luis Pena took over in the ninth and retired the side in order to notch his third save of the year. Woody (1-1) absorbed the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in his lone frame of action. Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez went 0-for-4 on the evening to snap his season-best hitting streak at five games. The teams continue the series with another 8:30 p.m. CT meeting on Wednesday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson (1-4, 4.11) will make the start for the Sounds and face Sidewinders southpaw Evan MacLane (1-2, 7.45). Nashville Box Score Jeff Weaver's performance sure to grab folks attention in the organization; nice to see Luis Pena with a clean inning; Hernan Iribarren with three singles, only three of 25 base hits for extra bases; Russell Branyan simply has not hit a rough patch yet... 7. Nashville Media Notes: Outfielder Laynce Nix has been placed on the Sounds' temporary inactive list. He will be away from the team for a few days while attending his grandfather's funeral. To fill his roster spot, infielder Steve Sollmann has been activated from the disabled list. He has not appeared for Nashville since April 22 and is batting .140 (6-for-40) with four RBIs in 16 games this season.
  8. Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 5, West Virginia 3 West Virginia Site Game Summary: TWO-OUT HOMERS PUT POWER DOWN West Virginia Power had the lead twice in Tuesday's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds, but Delmarva erased a pair of one-run deficits and homered twice with two outs in the seventh inning to defeat the Power 5-3. West Virginia took the lead in the top of the second on Kurt Crowell's first of two RBI singles on the afternoon. In the bottom of the inning Kieron Pope reached on an error to bring in the tying run. The Shorebirds took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third on Joe Mahoney's sacrifice fly that plated Matt Angle. Jonathan Lucroy began the fourth inning with a double and he scored on Zelous Wheeler's second double of the game. Tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Crowell ripped a single into left field to score Steffan Wilson. In the bottom of the seventh Anthony Martinez homered with two outs to tie the game. Wally Crancer walked on four pitches before Kieron Pope hit a two-run shot to put Delmarva ahead for good. Brian Parker (5-0) allowed a run on two hits over an inning and two-thirds of relief. Corey Frerichs (0-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over an inning and two-thirds. Mick Mattaliano (7) got the save while holding the Power scoreless through an inning and a third. Roque Mercedes held the Shorebirds to two runs on seven hits over five innings. The Power fell to 12-20 with the loss and the Shorebirds improved to 18-14 with the win. Three Power players had multi-hit games including Crowell who paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance. Lucroy and Wheeler chipped in with two hits apiece. Delmarva manager Ramon Sambo and second baseman Ryan Adams were both ejected in the bottom of the second for arguing balls and strikes. The Power are off on Wednesday but will begin a four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Right-hander Evan Anundsen (2-3, 4.45) will get the start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Jeff Mandel (2-1, 4.88). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score There's just no "put me on your back" player on this squad to carry them through any type of meaningful consistently good stretch of play... West Virginia Game Log The 8th inning was just hideous for the Power -- 2nd and 3rd, nobody out -- you guessed it, nada; then, listening in, it was just an abhorrent three-pitch bunt attempt strikeout in a key situation in the 9th for David Fonseca -- you've got to lay it down when you're the utility infielder...

  10. Brevard County Press Release: Manatees' Darren Ford Ties FSL Stolen Base Record Brevard County's Darren Ford stole five bases Monday night, tying a Florida State League record, but the Manatees lost to Clearwater, 7-6. Amazingly, Ford accomplished the feat without a single hit in the game. After reaching on an error in the first inning, Ford stole second and third base, but was left stranded. Ford reached base on a fielder's choice in the third inning, then promptly stole second base, but again he was left on base. In the sixth inning, Ford led off with a walk, and then stole second and third base again. This time he was rewarded for his efforts, as Chuck Caufield's two-out single brought him home, igniting a five-run rally. Ford had two more chances to reach base and make a run at the record, but was called out on strikes on both occasions. After Monday's stolen base bonanza, Ford now has an FSL-leading 19 stolen bases on the season, six ahead of his nearest competitor. He will attempt to increase his lead tonight in Clearwater, as the Manatees take on the Threshers.
  11. Link while active, text follows: Sounds fall short of sweeping Bees Offense struggles, ends win streak By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer As the Sounds entered their four-game series with visiting Salt Lake, a sweep would have been tough to expect. Following a 5-1 loss Monday to the Pacific Coast League's hottest team, Nashville wasn't content winning three of four. "They're a solid team, but we can win every game we go out and play," said Sounds starting pitcher Lindsay Gulin (0-3), who allowed three runs over five innings. "It worked out better for them today. "We can't be satisfied with three out of four. We've got to figure how we can improve every day." After struggling through its worst April in recent memory, Nashville won 4-3 on Friday before back-to-back victories - 10-2 on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday - to set up the possibility of a sweep. On Monday, the Sounds fell behind 1-0 on the first of Kendry Morales' two home runs. The Bees scored twice more in the fourth. The Sounds had multiple base runners in just three innings and didn't score until the seventh, when Ozzie Chavez singled with two outs. "Our ability to make offensive adjustments against their starter (Giancarlo Alvarado) took too long," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He was effectively wild and we helped him. "We swung at a lot of balls early in the count and put ourselves in holes. They did a good job pitching." The Sounds (10-20) head to Tucson having won five of their past seven games. Round Rock (10-19) is the only other PCL team with fewer than 12 wins. *** Link while active, text follows: Largest crowd of season attends Sounds game By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer With both the weather and the Sounds warming up, the Greer Stadium seats are filling up. A sellout crowd of 10,786 - the largest of the season - was announced for Monday's homestand finale against Salt Lake, giving the Sounds a total of 35,415 for the four-game series against the Bees. It was the second sellout of the series. The four-game total attendance was the largest at Greer Stadium since 37,899 was announced for four games with Round Rock on May 4-7, 2007. Coon skins Rottino: Salt Lake center fielder Brad Coon made the defensive play of the day when he sprinted into the right-center gap to flag down a seventh-inning drive by Sounds catcher Vinny Rottino. Two steps later, Coon slammed into the fence but held onto the ball. Coon, who starred at Trevecca before the Angels selected him in the 15th round of the 2005 draft, leads all PCL outfielders with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Game notes jinx: In the pregame notes supplied to the media, mention was made that neither Bobby Wilson nor Ryan Budde had been charged with a passed ball all season - making the Bees the only Pacific Coast League team without one. Sure enough, Wilson committed a passed ball in the second inning, allowing Rottino to go from first to second after drawing a one-out walk from Salt Lake starter Giancarlo Alvarado. Wilson atoned in the ninth with a solo home run off Sounds reliever Luis Pena. Two by three: Salt Lake first baseman Kendry Morales became the third Sounds opponent to hit two homers in a game this season when he belted a pair of leadoff blows Monday. His second, on reliever Zach Jackson's first pitch of the game, carried over the 24-foot batter's eye in center field to give the Bees a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning. Previously, New Orleans infielder Fernando Tatis and Albuquerque outfielder Brett Carroll each hit a pair against the Sounds. The Florida Marlins recently called up Carroll, a former Middle Tennessee State standout. Triple crown candidate: Nelson Cruz, who played for the Sounds during the 2005 and '06 seasons, leads the PCL in home runs (11), RBIs (32) and stolen bases (11) and is sixth in batting average (.375). Cruz was involved in the Brewers' trade that also sent outfielder Carlos Lee to Texas - in exchange for current Nashville outfielder Laynce Nix and three other players - and is now playing with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma. 13. John Alonso found work in indy ball quickly -- The Washington (PA) Wild Things of the Frontier League have signed first baseman John Alonso, a 22-year-old right-handed hitter who spent parts of four seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers' system. Alonso (6-0, 225) is a native of Orlando. The Brewers' 12-round draft pick in 2005 out of Polk Community College, Alonso led the rookie-level Arizona League in extra-base hits (25) in 2006 when he batted. 301. Last year, Alonso had a .280 batting average for the West Virginia Power of the Class A South Atlantic League. He returned to West Virginia this season, where he played for former Wild Things manager Jeff Isom. Alfonso hit three home runs in 62 at-bats but was released with a .194 batting average. In 163 professional games, Alonso has a .280 batting average, 18 home runs and 113 RBI.
  14. The Brewers have officially played the fewest home games in MLB with 13. All the other clubs that are even near that low total are home this week through Thursday, so it's not even close. Take two of three in Florida, and you'll be over .500 when the next home stand finally begins (which is immediately followed by another road trip longer than the next home stand).
  15. Another awesome outing for Dana Eveland Monday night, he looks so darn comfortable on the mound. How much fun is this Oakland staff with lefties Greg Smith and Eveland back-to-back? Where was this comfort zone with us, Dana? Not a big fan of the chewing tobacco, but congrats, kid.
  16. Final: Huntsville 8, Mobile (Diamondbacks) 6 Huntsville Press Release: Stars Survive Shaky Ninth to Beat BayBears HAMMOND GIVES STARS ANOTHER QUALITY OUTING Michael Brantley collected three hits and knocked in three runs and Huntsville hung on through a shaky ninth inning to defeat Mobile 8-6 Monday in the opener of a five-game set Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 21-10 and maintained their share of the lead in the North Division, while the BayBears dropped to 15-16 but stayed a game behind Birmingham in the South Division. The Stars improved to 14-2 at home and have started each of their four home series with a win. Juan Sandoval opened the ninth on the hill for Huntsville with an 8-4 lead and ran into trouble with one out after walking Cesar Nicolas, yielding a double to Rusty Ryal and walking Frank Curreri to load the bases. Cyle Hankerd's fourth single of the game plated Nicolas to trim the Stars lead to 8-5. Pinch-hitter Brandon Burgess then bounced into a force out at second to score Ryal to make it 8-6 but Curreri rounded the bag too far at third base and was tagged out by Mat Gamel to end the game after an alert read of the play and throw by shortstop Alcides Escobar. Brantley's two-out, two-run double capped a four-run sixth inning rally that gave the home side a 7-1 lead. David Johnson took over on the mound for the Stars in the seventh and yielded a two-out, run-scoring double to Bryan Byrne and a two-run, two-bagger by Ryal that cut the lead in half. Brantley's run-scoring hit in the eighth pushed the Huntsville advantage to four. Stars' starter Steve Hammond walked Ryal and gave up hits to Curreri and Hankerd to load the bases with nobody out in the second before he struck out John Hester and starter Brooks Brown and got Guillermo Reyes to fly out to end the inning. Hammond went six solid innings, allowing a run, on a Ryal long ball, on six hits to earn his fourth win of the year and his first at home since Opening Day. Matt LaPorta's RBI ground out, a sacrifice fly by Angel Salome and a run-scoring single by Escobar staked Hammond to a 3-0 lead after five. Salome singled home two in the sixth and picked up three of the Stars' season-high 16 hits. Brown suffered the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of work. The series continues Tuesday night with left-hander Derek Miller taking the mound against BayBears' right-hander Tony Barnette. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com. Huntsville Box Score Angel Salome 3-for-3 plus a sacrifice fly, three RBI, now with an .829 OPS -- when are these Stars going to remember they play in the pitcher-friendly Southern League? Michael Brantley, Alcides Escobar, Chris Errecart, and Salome all with three hits; Steve Hammond continues to rack up the K's -- all his peripherals look fine after seven starts; Salome picked off a runner at second base, and his passed ball numbers are way down from prior years -- very exciting; Mat Gamel's error tonight was a ground ball right through the wickets... 17. MLB.TV allowed for a view of the Cubbie loss (a bizarre scoreless save for Frankie Cordero despite allowing four baserunners), and if I didn't despise the Cardinals so much, they'd be a joy to watch. They do every conceivable "little" thing right, it's uncanny. It's a Cardinal clinic most every night. Tip your cap. Pujols amazing again.

  25. Final: West Virginia 6, Delmarva (Orioles) 1 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SHUT DOWN SHOREBIRDS West Virginia used home runs from Caleb Gindl and Jonathan Lucroy and six scoreless innings from Amaury Rivas to take down the Delmarva Shorebirds 6-1 on Monday night, giving the Power a chance to split the series on Tuesday. Gindl's home run was a three-run shot in the top of the fourth inning to snap a scoreless tie. It was his fourth of the year and his second of the road trip. West Virginia had the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning when Zelous Wheeler hit a groundball to third. Tyler Henson threw the ball to the plate for the out and catcher Brendan Monaghan threw the ball to first in an attempt to complete the double play but first baseman Anthony Martinez dropped the ball which allowed Lee Haydel to score. Lucroy's home run was a two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning. It was his second of the season. The Shorebirds avoided the shutout in the bottom of the ninth when Henson scored on Joe Mahoney's sacrifice fly. Rivas (3-1) earned the victory, holding the Shorebirds to just three hits over six scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Tony Butler (1-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Rob Bryson earned his first save of the season, fanning five over three innings while allowing just a run on one hit. The Power improved to 12-19 with the win and the Shorebirds fell to 17-14 with the loss. Three Power players had multi-hit games including Steffan Wilson who paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance. Wilson is 7-for-12 in the series. The Power will finish the four game series with Delmarva at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Tuesday morning. Right-hander Roque Mercedes (1-1, 6.59) will get the start for the Power and the Shorebirds will counter with left hander Cole McCurry (0-3, 5.68). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM (9:35 Central). West Virginia Box Score Caleb Gindl's home run was his first hit since a couple of three-hit games last week; Brent Brewer and Lee Haydel flip-flopped in the 1-2 spots with better results tonight; Steffan Wilson has his average up to an easier-on-the-eyes .253; after a somewhat lost 2007 season with elbow problems, Amaury Rivas is ready to take the mantle of top homegrown Latin American pitcher in the chain right now -- this is the second time in four starts he's been dominant; Rob Bryson reminds us he's still special -- now with 31K's in 20 IP...
