  3. Huntsville Site: Huntsville Stars outfielder Brendan Katin was named to the 2007 Southern League Postseason All Star Team announced earlier today as voted on by the league's field managers, radio announcers and print media. Katin, 24, is tied for the league lead with 23 home runs and leads the league with 90 RBI, 13 more than his nearest rival. The Ft. Myers, FL native is curerntly batting .259 and has started 106 of the Stars 132 games in the outfield. Katin is the first Huntsville player since Brad Nelson in 2004 to be named to the league's post-season all star team. Montgomery swept the player awards with 3B Evan Longoria capturing the league's Most Valuable Player and RHP Chris Mason was named the league's Most Outstanding Pitcher.
  4. Salem (Mass.) Observer: Rising Star - Pelham alum moving through Milwaukee's system http://www.yourneighborhoodnews.com/salem/2007/08/images/30-rising-star.jpgBY SAPNA PATHAK He thought winning every game he started as a freshman at Pelham (New Hampshire) High School was a fluke. But after repeating the feat three more times, former Pythons pitcher Derek Miller couldn't help but recognize his baseball abilities. "After my first two seasons at Pelham (High School), I had no losses, but I still didn't really think anything of it," said Miller with a laugh. "But then junior and senior year, I didn't lose either. Somewhere along there I realized this baseball thing could be something I should really go after and see what happens." What happened was Miller, then one semester away from graduating with a degree in early childhood education from the University of Vermont, was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, the first leg of what he hopes is a journey to the Major Leagues. This season, Miller was promoted to Double-A Huntsville, Ala., where the hurler earned Pitcher of the Week honors during the week of July 30. The UVM standout won both his starts that week, after officially joining the Stars on July 5. He's 6-2 following a 4-0 shutout on Sunday, Aug. 26. In that game, Miller fanned six in six innings, allowing three hits and two walks. In the process, he helped Huntsville maintain a three-game lead in the Southern league's North division. His rookie season brought Miller to Montana, where he pitched for the Helena Brewers before being promoted to Single-A West Virginia as a member of the Power rotation. In season two, Miller moved to the Florida State League and the Brevard County Manatees, where the New England native got his first taste of playing ball in the South. "Oh, man, it was so less stressful," said Miller about being able to rely on consistent warm weather. "I wouldn't have to worry about how I was going to get to the gym that day because there was so much snow on the ground. My wife and son even moved down here last year, so we're able to spend the offseason in Florida this year." As much as he looks forward to a sunny offseason, Miller was fast to say winters will be missed. And Miller was just as quick in crediting former Pythons manager Joe Connors, who no longer coaches at PHS, for instilling the confidence and poise Miller now brings to each start. "You have to keep your head about you," said Miller. "Back in high school, I didn't realize it, but playing with coach Connors and having success then helped me learn how to handle it now. I didn't take myself too seriously back then, and that's helped me stay relaxed and confident that I do belong here."

  6. Helena Press Release: Four Brewers Named to All-Star Team Gindl, Lucroy, Farris and Mercedes Tabbed for Pioneer League Honors Helena- The Pioneer League named its 2007 All-Star Team on Thursday and four Helena Brewers were among the honorees. No other team placed as many players on the honor roll as Helena. The All-Star team is selected by Pioneer League field managers and included Helena outfielder Caleb Gindl, catcher Jonathan Lucroy, second-baseman Eric Farris and pitcher Roque Mercedes. Caleb Gindl, who will turn 19 years-old on August 31st, currently leads the league in batting at .367. The Pace, FL resident has homered five times and has knocked in a team-high 38 RBI. Gindl is currently second in the Pioneer League in on-base percentage at .418 and fifth in slugging at .578. Gindl was a fifth round draft pick by Milwaukee this June. Jonathan Lucroy leads all Pioneer League catchers with a .340 batting average (currently sixth league-wide). The third-round pick by Milwaukee has homered twice and knocked in 33 RBI. Lucroy, who starred at University of Louisiana- Lafayette, leads the team and is fifth in the circuit with 18 doubles. Second baseman Eric Farris is currently batting .308 with 15 doubles, one homer and 29 RBI. Farris leads Helena and is sixth in the Pioneer League with 15 steals. The fourth-round pick from Loyola Marymount (CA) University is leading second baseman in fielding percentage at .976. He has committed only six errors this year. Right-handed pitcher Roque Mercedes is second in the league with seven wins and currently is seventh in ERA among starting pitchers with a 3.76 mark. Mercedes, a native of La Romana in the Dominican Republic, is third in the circuit with 76.0 innings pitched and fourth with 64 strikeouts. Idaho Falls first baseman Clint Robinson was named MVP of the league while Great Falls righty Juan Moreno was named Pitcher of the Year. Great Falls manager Chris Cron was named the top skipper. Other honorees follow: 3B Jay Brossman (Orem), SS Jaime Pedroza (Ogden), OF's Salvador Sanchez (Great Falls) and Jovanny Rosario (Ogden), DH Michael McKennon (Billings), and P's Jhoulys Chacin (Casper), Luis Montano (Billings) and Robert Fish (Orem.).

After torrential downpours saturated Joe Davis Stadium's playing surface and filled the dugouts all the way to the tunnel entrances, the Stars' game with West Tenn was postponed. It will not be made up, either. So, what does that mean for the playoffs? "It means there won't be a tie, let's put it that way," Stars manager Don Money said. "Unless the other teams are rained out. Now it'll be a half-game one way or the other." The two teams chasing Huntsville in the North Division - Tennessee and Chattanooga - played each other again Wednesday with Chattanooga winning 5-4. Now, the Stars' lead is 1 1/2 games. Also on Wednesday, the league determined how tiebreakers would occur if for some reason there was a deadlock at the end of the second half. If Huntsville ties with Chattanooga, there will be a one-game playoff at Joe Davis on Tuesday. If the Stars and Smokies tie, the one-game playoff will be on Wednesday at Joe Davis. If the Smokies and Lookouts tie, the one-game playoff will be Tuesday in Chattanooga. If the Stars keep their lead and go on to win both halves, they will play Tennessee because the Smokies have the best overall record above the Lookouts. There also has been one potential schedule change: If the Stars play the Smokies, Sept. 8's road game has been moved up to 4 p.m. to accommodate the Tennessee Vols' home game against Southern Miss. Huntsville wants to take care of business and win both halves, especially because if it doesn't, the team that wins the second half will have home-field advantage. The playoffs will start Sept. 6 at 7:05 with two games at Joe Davis. If the Stars win both halves, they'll play two at home, one on the road and two more at home. If they lose, they'll play two at home and the next three on the road. Got all that? The Stars aren't bothering themselves with scenarios, but one thing that is bothersome is the rainout placed them in a precarious situation as far as the pitching rotation goes. Money said the Stars had a rotation worked out for the playoffs, but now they're not sure. "Things might change now that (Sam) Narron didn't pitch tonight," pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. "We talked about it and had one set up," Money said of a rotation. "Now we don't have one set up." Lindsay Gulin appeared to be the clear-cut leader for Game 1 honors before dropping his past three decisions. Narron said even though starting the first game is not a big deal, it would be nice to get the call. "Everybody wants to start the first thing out in the playoffs," he said. "It's an honor more than anything. They haven't said anything to us. It could be any number of us."

Omaha shortstop Mike Aviles hit a solo home run off the guitar-shaped scoreboard in left field to give the Royals the victory. "Our pitching kept us in there, and we weren't able to bang out a big hit earlier in the game," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. The Sounds already have clinched the Pacific Coast League's American Conference Northern Division with five games left in the regular season. Omaha already had been eliminated from playoff contention. About 50 people stuck around through 15 innings - Nashville's longest game of the year. Plus, the noon start time was pushed back to 2 p.m. after rain drenched Greer Stadium for a couple of hours. The fans who did stick around arrived about 11:30 a.m. and didn't leave until 6:15 p.m. The Sounds were no match for Omaha starter Luke Hochevar. The former UT star allowed six hits through eight innings while giving up two runs, only one of them earned. He struck out five and issued no walks. "He threw the ball well," Kremblas said of Hochevar. "He looked like he had pretty good stuff." The Sounds managed just eight hits the entire game. "They threw the ball well," Kremblas said. So did Sounds pitchers, though. Six pitchers allowed 12 hits and three runs while striking out 13. Hit streak: Second baseman Ozzie Chavez extended his hitting streak to nine games. Extra innings: Wednesday's game was the Sounds' 10th extra-inning one of the year. The Sounds are now 4-1 in extra innings at Greer Stadium and 5-5 in extra-inning games overall. What they said: "They got a big two-out home run that won them the game." - Kremblas after the loss. *** Link while active, text follows: http://tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070830/SPORTS0401/708300415/1328/SPORTS Dickey named top PCL pitcher By TYLER BLANK Tennessean Staff Writer An up-and-down regular season for Nashville native R.A. Dickey is ending on a high. The Sounds pitcher was named on Wednesday the Pacific Coast League's pitcher of the year after posting a 12-6 record this season. "It's always fun to perform well in front of family and friends," Dickey said. "You want to do the best you can possibly do, and it was nice that it happened here." The MBA graduate and former UT star's season did not get off to an ideal start. He was taken out of the starting rotation in mid-May after going 1-4 in seven starts with a 6.17 ERA. Dickey swapped spots in the rotation with reliever Jose Capellan. "I didn't really have a feel for it," Dickey said of his early season performance. Dickey's year got better when he rejoined the rotation in mid-June after Tim Dillard was sent to the bullpen. Strong finish He has gone 8-2 with a 2.57 ERA since mid-June. "It's about committing to the pitch; trial and error, finding what works best," Dickey said. "When I found out how to do that, the better I became." Dickey, who is in his first season with the Milwaukee organization, was also named to the league's All-PCL team Monday. Previous to this season, Dickey had been in the Texas Rangers organization for 10 years. Dickey has a 3.80 ERA, which ranks third among PCL pitchers and ninth in Triple-A. His 12 victories are tied for second in the PCL, and his three complete games are tied for the league lead. "It's more of a reflection of a good team, being in a lot of games, scoring runs, playing good defense," Dickey said. "There's no way to get any kind of an award without meriting what needs to be properly merited. Our team has been collectively pretty ridiculous this year." Dickey is tied for fifth in the PCL with 115 strikeouts. The last Nashville pitcher to win a pitcher of the year award was Scott Ruffcorn, who won it in 1994 when the Sounds were with the American Association. Dickey's next start is Saturday at Memphis.

To The GM Dan O'Brien (Part 2 of 2): http://www.nashvillesounds.com/audio/2007/Interview%208-29.mp3 Final: Omaha (Royals) 3, Nashville 2, 15 innings Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Callix Crabbe photo, text follows -- http://www.nashvillesounds.com/news/news.asp?newsId=2537 NASHVILLE - Omaha shortstop Mike Aviles belted a two-out solo homer in the top of the 15th inning to propel the visiting Royals to a 3-2 win over the Nashville Sounds to culminate a marathon afternoon for the clubs on Wednesday at Greer Stadium. The blast, which careened off the scoreboard in left-center field, came on a 1-0 pitch from Sounds reliever Marino Salas. The game, which was delayed for two hours and four minutes at the start due to rain, finished over six hours after the scheduled noon start time. It was the Sounds' longest game of the season and the club's longest since their PCL record-tying 24-inning marathon against New Orleans on May 5 & 6, 2006. Omaha broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when Mitch Maier led off with a double against Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter and scored the game's first run three batters later on a Mike Sweeney sacrifice fly. Sounds centerfielder Callix Crabbe tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a one-out solo homer to right off Royals starter Luke Hochevar. The blast was Crabbe's eighth four-bagger of the season, a new career high. AUDIO: Callix Crabbe Game-Tying HR Nashville grabbed a 2-1 lead in the seventh when Jose Macias laid down a well-executed suicide squeeze bunt as Laynce Nix raced home from third to score the go-ahead run. Nix scored in unearned fashion after reaching to open the frame on a fielding error by second baseman Fernando Cortez. The Royals evened the score in the top of the eighth when Maier led off with a line-drive solo home run to right on a 1-0 offering from Nashville reliever Chris Spurling. It was the outfielder's 13th longball of the season. The Sounds had a chance to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the frame when Crabbe led off with his team-leading ninth triple of the year but was thrown out at the plate on the play after the relay throw from right field skipped past the third baseman. Hochevar alertly backed up the play and gunned down the Nashville leadoff man at home. Neither team scored again until the top of the 15th inning when Aviles mashed his game-ending blast. Nashville infielder Ozzie Chavez extended his longest hitting streak of the year to nine games with a third-inning single. Thad Markray (7-7) earned the victory for Omaha after working three scoreless frames of relief. Salas (0-1) took a loss in his first career Triple-A decision after allowing the game-winning run in his two innings of work. Nashville starter Zach Jackson worked 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits, before leaving the contest early after being hit on the pitching hand by a Matt Tupman single in the top of the fifth inning. The Sounds wrap up their 2007 regular season home schedule with a 7 p.m. finale against the Royals on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium, the final Thirsty Thursday of the summer at the ballpark. Left-hander Adam Pettyjohn (11-4, 3.96) will man the bump for the Sounds to take on Omaha southpaw Tyler Lumsden (9-5, 6.04). Yarbrough's RBIs came during a seven-run fifth inning when he ripped a bases-loaded triple to give the Cardinals (33-33) a 7-5 lead. The 22-year-old catcher, who also had two singles, collected his Florida State League-leading 11th triple and is tied for fifth in the Minor Leagues. Mark Shorey and Luke Gorsett each chipped in with two hits and one RBI, while Shorey scored twice for Palm Beach. Eddie Degerman (4-4) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and two walks while fanning five in five innings. Luke Gregerson struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 28th save. Cole Gillespie slammed a three-run homer, his 12th, in the first and Lorenzo Cain hit a solo shpt, his second, in the seventh. 12. Charleston Gazette: Power home to close regular season With the start of the South Atlantic League playoffs less than a week away, the West Virginia Power closes out the regular season with a five-game homestand, beginning Thursday night at 7:05 (6:05 Central) with the first of two games against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park. The Power (31-32 second half) comes into tonight's game with the Legends on a three-game winning streak. West Virginia concluded its last road trip with wins at Lexington Monday and Tuesday. The Power, which earned its playoff spot by winning the Northern Division first-half title, will start the best-of-three first-round playoff series Wednesday on the road, most likely at Hickory. The Crawdads (38-26 in the second half) hold a 4 1/2-game lead over Lakewood with five games remaining and can clinch the playoff berth opposite the Power during their final road trip to Asheville and Lexington. The second and (if necessary) third playoff games would be played next Friday and Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power is 9-4 on the season against Hickory, 3-3 in the second half. While the team gets ready for the playoffs, several players are chasing individual honors and milestones: Power outfielder Andrew Lefave continues to lead the Sally League with a .345 batting average, 12 points higher than Greensboro's John Raynor. Third baseman Taylor Green ranks third in the league with a .330 mark. Outfielder Steve Chapman looks to add to his Charleston Class A franchise record of 23 home runs. Outfielder Chuckie Caufield is two runs shy of 100 on the season, which ranks him second in the league. On the negative side, shortstop Brent Brewer has struck out 167 times, most in the league. Relief pitcher Donovan Hand, who has four saves since being moved into the closer's role, has not issued a walk in 20 innings.
  13. Link while active, text follows: http://www.helenair.com/articles/2007/08/30/sports/b01083007_1.txt Five questions with Caleb Gindl By CURT SYNNESS Helena Independent Record Sports Writer The late Dizzy Dean, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and major league baseball broadcaster, was renowned for his colorful (albeit incorrect) grammar. His favorite expressions when describing a good hitter were, "He's lookin' awful hitterish up there, he's standin' at the plate confidentially!" And Ol' Diz, were he around to see Caleb Gindl, would no doubt be quick to express those words in characterizing the Helena Brewers' right fielder. One thing's for sure - when Gindl is at the plate, a person definitely gets the sense they may be looking at a future big leaguer. Gindl is currently the Pioneer League's leading hitter. He is scalding the ball at a .367 clip. He is third in the league in slugging percentage, with a .578 mark, close behind teammate Steffan Wilson's .579. Gindl has played in 48 games, and leads Helena with 38 runs batted in, 36 runs scored and three triples. He is No. 2 on the club in home runs, with five, after the eight taters by Wilson; hits with 66, trailing Jonathan Lucroy's 72 hits; and 17 doubles, behind Lucroy's 18. Gindl, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on August 31, was Milwaukee's fifth round draft choice right out of high school. As a centerfielder and pitcher with Florida's Pace High School, his team won the state championship his junior year, and lost in the state semifinals as a senior. In 2006, he batted .484, belted eight homers and drove in 50 runs in 34 games. This year, he upped his average to .545, posting five homers and 45 RBI. In his first professional season, Gindl has achieved seven contests so far with three hits or more. He has a pair of four-hit games to his credit, against Casper and Missoula. His first home run came June 28, at Kindrick-Legion Field versus the Osprey. Gindl described his wheelhouse as being "a low and inside fastball." At 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, the stockily built Gindl possesses pretty decent foot-speed. In the weight room, he bench presses 60-pound dumbbells (120-pound total) for seven reps per set. He said that his hobbies include hunting whitetail deer and river fishing for largemouth bass back in his home state of Florida. Q 1. Who is your favorite major leaguer? A: Ken Griffey, Jr. He's the one I look up to the most, being a lefty-lefty outfielder and all. I love the way he carries himself. Q 2. What is the highlight of your career, to date? A: Hitting my first home run as a pro, against Missoula. I always wondered what it would be like. It's a feeling I've never felt before, and I'll never forget it. Q3. How does Helena compare with your hometown of Pace, Florida? A: They're about the same size, actually. This is a nice town and a beautiful place, but there's no place like home. I miss Pace. Q4. What part of your game needs the most improvement for you to get to the bigs? A: There's always room for improvement everywhere, but I'd say my base running and outfield play. And I need to work on hitting the curveball better. Q5. Any plans for college? A: After my baseball career is over, yes, I plan on going to college. But first, my number one goal is to get to the big leagues.
  14. Final: Billings (Reds) 15, Helena 7 MiLB.com: Waring, Mustangs overpower Brewers There's hot, there's torrid and then there's whatever Brandon Waring is. Waring homered twice for the third time in four games and collected a career-high six RBIs on Wednesday, powering the Billings Mustangs to a 15-7 victory over the Helena Brewers. Waring smacked a two-run shot in the first inning and a grand slam, his Pioneer League-leading 18th homer of the season and seventh in four nights. "I've been feeling good. Every time I come back to the dugout, the guys all have smiles on their faces," he said. It would be hard not to smile at what Waring has been doing lately. He's hitting .465 (20-for-43) with 10 homers, 18 RBIs and 17 runs scored in his last 11 games. Seven of those roundtrippers have come in his last 20 at-bats. Before his current tear, however, he was mired in a 4-for-37 slump that snapped nine games. "I was slumping pretty badly a few weeks ago," the 21-year-old third baseman admitted. "I've been able to keep my hands back and see the ball longer. There's been some good games and some bad ones. It's great to end the season on a high note." Selected by Cincinnati in the seventh round of the 2007 draft, Waring has raised his batting average to .304. He is second in the league with 55 RBIs, four behind Idaho Falls' Clint Robinson. Brandon Menchaca went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and four runs scored, Jason Bour collected three hits and two RBIs and Kyle Maunus and Francis Meade drove in two runs apiece for the Mustangs (15-14). Reliever Harris Honeycutt (2-2) allowed a hit and a walk while fanning two over 3 2/3 scoreless frames for the win. Billings starter Enerio Del Rosario surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits, striking out one and walking one in 4 1/3 innings. Mike Goetz smacked a three-run homer, his third, Steffan Wilson hit a two-run shot, his ninth, and Anthony Wycklendt added a solo blast, his fifth, for the Brewers (14-15). Helena starter Evan Anundsen (6-5) gave up 10 runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. He fell to 0-3 against Billings. The Mustangs scored six in the fourth inning, sparked by Angel Cabrera's lined shot that hit Anundsen in the leg and resulted in an error. Anundsen was OK, but could not recover his poise in the inning. The Mustangs now travel to Helena for another important three-game set. The series opener is tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).
