  1. Against independent league batters this year, Tucker had made 25 relief appearances covering 24.1 innings (1.48 ERA, 14 saves, only 11 hits allowed, 4 HBP, 17 BB, 37 K, and a .133 BA against. Looks to be pretty imposing to a batter with those Mitch Williams-type numbers.

  10. Baseball America's Jim Callis: The Padres acquired three Brewers pitching prospects in exchange for Scott Linebrink. Before the season, San Diego was widely considered to have a very weak farm system. With their recent acquisitions and recent drafts, where do you see their farm system now? Also, where would Will Inman rank in the system in terms of pitchers and overall? Amy Gayita Reno, Nevada Count Baseball America among those who identified the Padres as having one of the game's worst farm systems. In our preseason talent rankings, we ranked San Diego's system 29th, ahead of only Washington's. The Padres also ranked 29th entering 2006, 27th going into 2005 and 25th at the outset of 2004. Poor drafts in 2003 (including taking Tim Stauffer fourth overall) and 2004 (Matt Bush over Stephen Drew with the No. 1 overall pick) really crippled the system. Because they've added a lot of talent this year, the Padres will sit closer to the middle of the pack than to the bottom when we update the rankings during the offseason. The Linebrink trade added three pitchers who made our Milwaukee Top 30 Prospects list in the 2007 Prospect Handbook: righthander Will Inman and lefties Joe Thatcher and Steve Garrison. San Diego also signed draft-and-follow righty Matt Latos for $1.25 million before this year's draft, in which it had six picks before the second round and 11 choices in the first four rounds. Draftees such as first-rounder Nick Schmidt and supplemental first-rounders Kellen Kulbacki, Drew Cumberland, Mitch Canham, Cory Luebke and Danny Payne will help beef up our Padres Top 30 in the 2008 Handbook. Also, San Diego has seen a number of prospects already on hand take a significant step forward this summer. That group includes second baseman Matt Antonelli, third baseman Chase Headley, catcher Nick Hundley and lefthander Wade LeBlanc, all of whom were part of the Padres' improved draft efforts in 2005 and 2006. As for Inman in particular, he ranked 91st this spring on our Top 100 Prospects list?which didn't include a single Padre. He's a tough guy to evaluate because his superlative performance (he dominated high Class A and has reached Double-A this year at ago 20, and he currently leads the minors with 140 strikeouts in 118 innings) doesn't completely jibe with his more average stuff (89-92 mph fastball, ordinary secondary pitches) and the lack of projection remaining in his 6-foot, 200-pound frame. Inman has accomplished more for his age than any pitcher in San Diego's system, and I'd give him the nod right now as the club's top pitching prospect. Latos has far more impressive stuff, however, as do Drew Miller and 2005 first-rounder Cesar Carrillo (before he needed Tommy John surgery). Schmidt and LeBlanc are polished lefthanders, and none of these guys is far behind Inman. He could rank as high as the third-best prospect in the system, behind Antonelli and Headley.

Link for Callix Crabbe photo, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds win with strong pitching, solid hitting Nelson HR backs 8 K's by DiFelice CHRIS GRAHAM Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds have made winning look easy, showing why they have the best record in the Pacific Coast League. Behind the stellar pitching of Mark DiFelice, the Sounds (64-41) shut down the Fresno offense and rode the bat of first baseman Brad Nelson to a 6-1 victory over the Grizzlies in front of 7,054 fans at Greer Stadium. "None of our wins are easy, we always have to go out and perform," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "Although when we're hitting the ball that well it really helps out the pitcher; they don't have to be as sharp." In the first inning, left fielder Drew Anderson reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced after a routine grounder by Joe Dillon ended up as a fielding error on Grizzlies second baseman William Bergolla. That set up Nelson for a two-run double. "I've been seeing the ball pretty well for the past week," Nelson said of his first-inning RBI double. "I was in see-pitch-hit-pitch mode and he left one over the plate." In the sixth, after a double by Dillon, Nelson launched another ball thrown by Grizzlies pitcher Sun Woo Kim over the left field wall, his fourth home run in the last five games. "After I got one hit, I was confident and relaxed," Nelson said. Kim allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings while striking out four. Nelson's offense was more than enough for DiFelice. The right-hander pitched seven innings and struck out eight batters, tying a season high. Dillon and Nelson each added an RBI in the seventh to extend the Sounds lead to 6-0. Nelson's five RBIs tie a season high. The Grizzlies ended the shutout on an RBI single by left fielder Brian Horwitz. The two teams will finish their series at 7 p.m. today at Greer. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Fans leave happy after Sounds win another at home By CHRIS GRAHAM Tennessean Staff Writer The Sounds appear comfortable playing in front of the home crowd. While boasting the Pacific Coast League's best overall record, Nashville also holds the best home record. Entering Thursday night's game against the Fresno Grizzlies, the Sounds had won 32 of their past 43 home games. When leading after seven innings at home, the Sounds are undefeated (27-0). Thursday home games have been especially good to the Sounds, with a 6-1 record, their most successful day of the week at Greer Stadium. Third baseman Joe Dillon has also enjoyed the Sounds homestands. He has a .336 home batting average, nine home runs and 24 RBIs in his past 24 home games. Power pitching: The Sounds pitching staff led the PCL with 823 strikeouts entering Thursday's game. Starter Mark DiFelice struck out eight against Fresno on Thursday in seven innings, tying a season high. DiFelice had not issued a walk in 56 2/3 innings until the fourth inning of Thursday's game. Unhittable: The Sounds pitching staff leads the PCL with a 3.59 ERA, the only team with a sub-4.00 ERA. Entering Thursday's game, the Sounds were 25-3 at home when a starter threw six or more innings. Nashville has held opposing teams to one run or less on 24 occasions this year. Nearly perfect: The Sounds defense has committed a PCL-low 67 errors this season and currently leads the league with a .983 fielding average. If that number holds up, it will best the team's franchise record (.982) set last season, which also was best in the league.
  12. Suspended: Hagerstown (Nationals) 0, West Virginia 0, after three innings Power site: The West Virginia Power and Hagerstown Suns played three innings at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday Night before the game was suspended because of rain. They will continue the scoreless game in the top of the fourth inning at 6:05 (5:05 Central) on Friday night. They will complete the first game through nine innings and play a seven inning game approximately a half hour after the first game has been completed. ***Charleston Gazette: Torrential rain suspended the Power?s South Atlantic League home game against the Hagerstown Suns Thursday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The game was scoreless through three innings when the storm hit. The teams will resume their nine-inning game starting Friday night. Following about a 30-minute break, they?ll play a seven-inning game. A fireworks display is scheduled after the second game. Power right-hander Chris Toneguzzi (4-1) and Suns righty Erik Arnesen (4-5) were locked in a scoreless duel Thursday. Arnesen allowed only a two-out single to Andrew Lefave in the first, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced. Toneguzzi walked one Suns batter in the first inning, hit another and gave up a single to Leonard Davis, but still managed to hold Hagerstown scoreless. Catcher Andy Bouchie threw out a runner attempting to steal and second baseman Jimmy Mojica made a nice pickup on a grounder to throw out Joe Napoli and retire the side with runners at second and third. The Suns (9-24) have lost five in row, while the Power (16-18) halted a seven-game slide by winning Wednesday?s game against Hagerstown. 13. Joe Thatcher made his debut for the Padres last night in Houston, pitching a 1-2-3 7th in San Diego's 7-1 loss. One of the big benefits of being an MLB.TV subscriber is being able to click on any half-inning of the archived audio, and the action picks up from there. Thatcher stuck out Morgan Ensberg, then got a groundouts to short from Jason Lane (broken bat) and Eric Bruntlett, so three right-handed batters. The San Diego bench called for the ball from the bench after his first big league K. Padre manager Bud Black studied his new "weapon" intently. The Houston broadcaster was from Kokomo, Indiana as well, and his mother had taught Thatcher in elementary school -- small world. ***I am really hoping he won't mind, but Joe's father Phil shared some thoughts with us yesterday morning as the family prepared to hustle to Houston for last night's game -- "We truly have mixed emotions about the trade. We have been to Helena, West Virginia, Brevard County, Huntsville, and Nashville. We have met so many wonderful people, coaches, players, and real Brewer fans. We will miss all of these people. On the other hand, this is a great day for Joe and our family! We have already booked a flight to Houston and hopefully we'll get to see Joe when he takes the mound for the first time in "the show'. Again, thanks and good luck!" ***MLB.com: After being traded to the Padres in the Scott Linebrink deal on Wednesday, lefty reliever Joe Thatcher pitched a perfect seventh inning in his Major League debut. "It feels good to get it out of the way," Thatcher said. "I was more nervous in the bullpen than I was when I got out there. I just wanted to be aggressive, get ahead [in counts] and do what I've always done." "He looks as though he's got a nice cut to his fastball," Black said of Thatcher. "He came in on a couple of right-handers and jammed them, forcing ground balls to short. I think that was a good debut. He came in and threw his strikes. I think it's something that he'll always remember. That first appearance, you never forget."

  23. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/story/S...ia-to-win/ Chapman's bat boosts West Virginia to win Christopher Wade For the Charleston Daily Mail When seeing West Virginia Power left fielder Steve Chapman's statistics Wednesday, one would have to be impressed. After all, Chapman did hit two home runs, go 3-for-4 at the plate, and drive in three runs in helping lead the Power to a 7-5 come-from-behind South Atlantic League baseball victory over the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park in front of 2,675. Chapman's two home runs, both to right-center field, were very impressive, but it was his second hit in between the two long bombs that left an impression on both himself and Power Manager Mike Guerrero. After Chapman hit a solo home run in the third inning to get the Power on the scoreboard and cut the Hagerstown lead to 3-1, in his next at-bat in the fifth inning, he laid down a perfect bunt single down the third base line. The at-bat didn't lead to any more Power runs, but it showed Chapman's willingness to do the little things and anything needed to help his team earn a much-needed win. With the victory, the Power (16-18) snapped a seven-game losing streak. That included a four-game sweep at home against Delmarva. It marked the first time all season that the Power had been swept in a series. "This was a big win for us, especially after losing seven or eight in a row, whatever it was," Chapman said. "We're not used to losing and nobody likes to lose. Hopefully, we can carry this over to (today)." Chapman certainly has the power numbers. He now has 17 homers on the season. However, he has been working on other things on his game offensively, including bunting. "I've been working with Corey (Hart, Power hitting coach) a lot lately and was actually bunting before the game," Chapman said. "I like to say I'm fast, but I haven't had many bunt hits. I got the first hit out of the way so I figured I might as well try it. I'm glad it worked out for me. I'll take that with me the rest of the season." Chapman entered Wednesday's game with seven stolen bases, and had been caught stealing three times. He also had delivered two sacrifice bunts. Guerrero was equally impressed with Chapman's willingness to bunt and try whatever possible to try to get the Power back on the winning track. "Steve is coming around real well and has been making good adjustments at the plate," Guerrero said. "That is part of his game. We've been working with him on that. It's a part of his development." Chapman went back to his power game in the sixth inning, hitting his second homer of the game, a two-run shot to give the Power their first lead of the game at 5-4. Hagerstown (9-24) quickly tied the game up at five with a run in the top of the seventh inning, but just as quickly as the Suns responded, the Power did so in the bottom half of the inning. After the first two Power batters were retired, Andrew Lefave and Chuckie Caufield hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and third for third baseman Taylor Green. Green hit a pop-up to short center field as three Hagerstown fielders converged on the ball. However, none could field it. The bloop single scored both runners, who proved to be the game winning runs. "We haven't been getting many breaks lately but finally caught some tonight," Green said. "It felt awesome. We finally get a freak broken-bat hit, but we will take it however we can get it." Guerrero agreed that while the win might not have been pretty at times, breaking the long losing streak was the only thing that mattered. "Some things went our way and it's nice to get back in the win column," Guerrero said. "You take a win anyway you can get it. Ugly, good looking, it doesn't matter, a win is a win." Game 2 of the four-game series with the Suns is scheduled tonight at 7:05 (6:05 Central).
  24. Predictably to fill the Nashville roster spot: Thatcher Traded To Padres; Stetter Returns
  25. Link while active, text follows: www.registerbee.com/servl...th=!sports Tunstall's Inman dealt to Padres By JEFF PATTERSON Danville (VA) Register & Bee sports writer Will Inman was sitting in a Jacksonville, Fla., hotel room as he tried to put his life back together Wednesday night. The former Tunstall High School standout, drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2005 draft, had just found out that he was traded to the San Diego Padres and was "struggling" to process all the information. In the thick of a pennant race, the Brewers dealt Inman, who was playing with the Double A Huntsville Stars, and fellow minor leaguers Steve Garrison and Joe Thatcher to the Padres for veteran reliever Scott Linebrink. Inman will join the San Antonio Missions as soon as he can make arrangements to get there. "I'm trying to figure out how to get my car, my life, to Texas," said Inman, who led the Trojans to back-to-back state championships in 2004-05. Linebrink, who is expected to be the setup man for Brewers closer Francisco Cordero, is 3-3 with a 3.80 earned run average in 44 games. Inman started the season in the Florida State League and went 4-3 with a 1.72 ERA in 13 games. He struck out 98 batters in 78 2/3 innings and had a .198 opponent batting average. Those numbers were impressive enough to get him called up to Double A, where he struggled to a 1-5 record with a 5.45 ERA in eight starts. In those last five starts, he's gone 1-2 with a 2.48 ERA and 30 strikeouts - more like his usual self. Even though he's had success in the Brewers organization, Inman called the trade a "great thing" but really doesn't have a clue of what to expect with the Padres. "Milwaukee has been good to me," Inman said. "They've taught me how to be a man and a professional in baseball. What it comes down to is business is business, and they have to do whatever they can to help their chances."
