His success continued five days later against Billings, pitching four more innings of scoreless baseball while surrendering just two hits and striking out four.

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 All-Star experience bittersweet Stars' Guerrero has his heart in San Francisco Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times PEARL, Miss. - Sandy Guerrero's phone kept buzzing. All Monday afternoon, it was a torrent of teasing texts. From his brother Mike. From Prince Fielder. Even a message passed along from one of his best friends, Boston slugger David Ortiz. "Wish you could be here," Fielder tapped out a text that leapt onto Guerrero's screen. Fielder, the ex-Huntsville Star and current Milwaukee Brewers first baseman, Ortiz and Mike Guerrero were in San Francisco. Sandy Guerrero's heart was in San Francisco. But Sandy Guerrero was here, in this booming community just a few miles east of downtown Jackson, Miss., and a couple of light-years east of San Francisco. San Francisco has the Golden Gate. Pearl has the golden arches. San Francisco has Fisherman's Wharf. Pearl has a Bass Pro Shops just across the parking lot from the ballpark. San Francisco has the Major League All-Star Game tonight. Pearl had the Southern League All-Star Game on Monday night. Guerrero, the Stars hitting coach, was the manager for the North team. He was subbing for Stars manager Don Money, who was flying back home - from San Francisco, naturally. Money was initially tabbed the All-Star manager, but got a pass when he was selected to coach in Sunday's Futures Game. Part of Guerrero's responsibility on Monday was to pitch to the North stars in the home run contest. That's the most agonizing and cruel irony. Sandy had been invited to San Francisco, to be Fielder's personal pitcher in the majors' Home Run Derby. They have been close since Prince played for the Stars in 2004. "I have such a nice relationship with Prince, and with his wife and kids," Guerrero said. It's a nice testimony that Fielder would offer the pitching role to his Double-A coach. When Guerrero's duties here precluded his trip to San Francisco, Fielder enlisted Mike Guerrero, who manages Milwaukee's West Virginia farm club. "A blessing from heaven," Mike told The Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail. "At least," Sandy said, "it's staying in the family." Fielder did blast three homers, but failed to advance past the first round. It all tastes a tad bittersweet. As Guerrero put it, "Prince is going to be in a lot of All-Star Games, but this is the first one." Guerrero was sitting in the visiting manager's office at Trustmark Park, munching on a sandwich and sipping a Coke. It was nearing time to head toward the field. His phone buzzed one more time. He read the message, then slapped the phone shut with a loud clack and a weary smile. Leaving the clubhouse, a TV set caught his attention. ESPN was showing footage of players loosening up for the Home Run Derby. There was a quick glimpse of Mike Guerrero. "I feel like I lost a leg," Guerrero said. "I feel like I lost and arm and a leg."

  8. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Huntsville players shine in North win By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com PEARL, Miss. - Before Mark DiFelice was handed the ball for his Southern League All-Star Game start, he was handed a piece of news by pitching coach Rich Sauveur. You're going to Triple-A. The Huntsville Stars' ace, who pitched a scoreless first for the winning North team in its 7-4 victory over the South, will report later this week to Milwaukee's Triple-A Nashville team. It wasn't surprising news. DiFelice recently knitted together a franchise-record 36 consecutive scoreless innings over the course of 11 appearances. He leaves the Stars with a 6-1 mark and 1.62 ERA in 26 appearances, three of them as a starter. "Hopefully I can go there and keep everything the same way," he said. "(The promotion) was just a matter of time," Sauveur said. "He's been my most productive pitcher, my go-to guy. When he takes the ball, I feel like he's going to win. Game over." Here's how the rest of the Stars' fared Monday in front of the announced crowd of 4,555 at Trustmark Park: DiFelice allowed two hits, back-to-back singles by hometown J.C. Holt and Carl Loadenthal to open the game, then retired three in a row. Brendan Katin was the runner-up in the home run contest, losing 6-5 in the final to Birmingham's Thomas Collaro. Katin had the night's most memorable blast, a shot to dead center that cleared the black "batter's eye" background, estimated at 470 feet. In the "real" game, Katin was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Steve Sollmann started at first base and went 1-for-4, scoring on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and scoring the fifth North run in the ninth. Catcher Lou Palmisano played in his fourth straight All-Star Game (Midwest League in '04, Florida State League in '05, Southern League in '06) but was making his first start. He drove in the North's first run and finished 2-for-3. Pitcher Lindsay Gulin gave up the first South run in the third inning. Outfielder Steve Moss was 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Marino Salas pitched the ninth for the North, but worked with such a big lead he didn't earn the save. For the 30-year-old DiFelice, it will be his fourth term in Triple-A on a determined march to reach the majors that has seen him get oh-so-close and then almost in oblivion. He was originally drafted by Colorado in 1998, and spent 2000 and 2001 in the Southern League at Carolina. He made it to Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2001. Then he had to reboot his career - a couple of times. After Colorado let him go, he reached Triple-A with Baltimore in 2004 and with Washington in 2005. But after finding no hope with the Nationals, he gave independent ball a whirl, first in Somerset, N.J., then a sensational season in Camden last year, in which he was 12-9 with a 3.19 ERA and league-leading 132 strikeouts. "To play independent baseball, and contemplating retiring (last year) and now get a shot with the Milwaukee Brewers, getting a shot with Double-A, then going to Triple-A is very gratifying," DiFelice said. "It was a lot of hard work. And it paid off." All-Star notes: Carolina's Lee Mitchell was named the game's MVP. He was 2-for-4 with an RBI. ... The Southern League board of directors held a meeting Monday, but league president Don Mincher said there were no major developments. ... Stars owner Miles Prentice and GM Tom VanSchaack headed the Huntsville delegation to the game. 9. Final: Helena 4, Billings (Reds) 3 Helena Site Game Summary: Wycklendt Leads Brewers to Thrilling Win HELENA -- The Helena Brewers don't like extra innings and Anthony Wycklendt proved it by ending the game in the bottom of the ninth Monday night. Wycklendt provided the Brewers with a walk-off victory when he singled in the go-ahead run, defeating the Billings Mustangs 4-3. With the scored tied 3-3 and runners on first and second, Wycklendt hit a shot past the third baseman driving in pinch-runner Matt Cline for the win. The Brewers appeared to be in control, leading 3-1 entering the eighth inning. The Mustangs, however, scored single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game. Billings third baseman Justin Tordi knotted the game with one out in the top of the ninth on a no-doubt solo home run to left field off reliever Corey Frerichs. Nonetheless, Helena did not give up in the ninth inning. With two outs and a full count Eric Newton singled to centerfield. Newton advanced to second on a wild pitch and batter Zelous Wheeler was intentionally passed to set up a force play. Next, Wycklendt stepped to the plate, and with extra innings looming he ripped a solid base hit past the left hole of the infield and pinch-runner Cline came in to end the game. Helena jumped on the board first in the third inning on a Mike Goetz RBI double. Wycklendt provided two other RBIs in the fourth inning on another two-out base hit to give the Brewers a 3-0 advantage. Brewer starter Roque Mercedes threw four scoreless innings to begin the game extending his streak to 17 shutout innings. Mercedes, however, ended his streak in the fifth when he surrendered a single run. Relievers Robert Bryson and Dan Merklinger both earned a hold during the game. Although Frerichs had a blown save, he got the win to improve his record to 2-0. With the win Helena improves to 13-8 while Billings drops to 8-13. The Brewers will enjoy a day off July 10 before hitting the road Wednesday to play the Idaho Falls Chukars. ***Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...007_01.txt Brewers beat Billings in bottom of ninth By CURT SYNNESS, Helena Independent Record Sports Writer The Helena Brewers were one strike away from going into extra innings against the Billings Mustangs at Kindrick Legion Field Monday night. But the Brewers refused to quit, putting two men on before gritty Anthony Wycklendt drilled a one-hop bullet to third. The ball was way too hot to handle and Matt Cline raced home from second for the winning run in dramatic fashion. With the game tied 3-3, nobody on and two outs, Helena was facing overtime after the visitors? late comeback. The Brewers? Eric Newton poled a 400-foot foul ball into the parking lot that brought a gasp from the crowd, and would have won the game right then had it been fair. Newton then worked the count to 3-and-2 before sending a soft liner to center for a single. A wild pitch moved him to second, and Cline then pinch ran for him. After Zelous Wheeler was walked, Wycklendt produced the victory for the home team with his third RBI of the game. Helena (13-8) led most of the game, going up 3-0 after four innings. In the third, Jordan Swaydan singled and then scored on a long RBI double off the center field wall by leadoff hitter Mike Goetz. Wyklendt?s base knock in the next frame plated Wheeler and Newton. Roque Mercedes started for the Brewers and went five innings. He allowed one run and five hits while striking out five. Side-armer Robert Bryson hurled two innings of scoreless relief, fanning two and giving up one hit. Dan Merklinger pitched the eighth stanza, permitting three singles (one a bad-hopper off the lip of the infield grass) and a run while striking out the side. With a 3-2 advantage going into the top of the ninth, Helena?s Corey Frerichs was called on to close. But after Frerich retired the first man, Billings? classy-fielding shortstop Justin Tordi put a charge into one that went well over the left field wall and knotted things up. Things were a little tense for coach Jeff Isom and the Capital City fans in the last part of the inning, until the Brew-crew pulled off their last-minute heroics. Newton finished with three base-knocks and Wycklendt with two. Frerich received the win. The Brewers? defense played errorless ball and twisted three double plays. Billings (8-13), which out-hit the Brewers 10-9, was led at the plate by Brett Bartles? three singles, Tordi and Frank Meade. Enerio Del Rosario worked the first five stanzas, with Phillipe Valiquette pitching the last 3.2 and taking the tough loss. Helena is now 13-8 and remains tied for first in the Pioneer League?s North Division. On Wednesday Helena will travel to Idaho Falls to face the Chukars. 12. Final: Lexington (Astros) 2, Wset Virginia 1, ten innings West Virginia Site Game Summary: LEGENDS TAKE RUBBER MATCH FROM POWER The Lexington Legends were held to six hits on Monday afternoon at Applebee?s Park but they received the right hit at the right time from Eric Taylor as he delivered a bases loaded single off the wall in right field in the bottom of the tenth inning, and the Legends went on to defeat the Power 2-1 to take the rubber match. Eric Taylor knocked in both of Lexington?s runs. He gave the Legends a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the third inning before delivering the game winner in the tenth. Andrew Lefave ripped a two-out, run-scoring base hit in the fifth to plate Brad Miller. West Virginia lefty Mike Ramlow and right hander Shawn Ferguson combined to toss nine solid innings for the Power. Ramlow gave up a run on two hits with six strikeouts through five innings. Ferguson was outstanding in four scoreless innings of relief. He allowed a base hit, hit a batter and had one strikeout. Chad Wagler (5-3) tossed two and a third scoreless innings of the pen to get the win and Matt Kretzschmar (0-1) allowed his first earned run of the season and was tagged with the loss. The Power fell to 58-29 overall and 10-9 in the second half, while the Legends improved to 39-50 overall and 7-12 in the second half with the win. Jimmy Mojica was the only Power player with a multi-hit game. Chuckie Caufield wasn?t in the starting lineup for the first time all year, but he did appear as a pinch runner in the tenth inning. The loss drops West Virginia?s record to 6-5 in extra inning games and 19-6 in one run games. The Power will begin a three game series against the Hickory Crawdads at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will start right hander Chris Toneguzzi (2-1, 4.26). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). ***Link while active, text follows: www.kentucky.com/271/story/119673.html Taylor sews up Lexington victory By Mark Maloney MMALONEY@HERALD-LEADER.COM The Lexington Legends did something yesterday that they hadn't all season. They completed back-to-back series victories. Eric Taylor drove in both Lexington runs, capped by a walkoff single in the 10th inning to help the Legends edge West Virginia 2-1 on Day Camp Day at Applebee's Park. After taking three of four from Kannapolis, Lexington got the Power in two of three. "It only took three months," Manager Gregg Langbehn said with a laugh of relief. "But it goes back to consistency." Of late, pitching has been consistent, hits have been timely and defense has been sharp. The Legends have won two in a row and five of six. Starter Sergio Severino gave up a run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings. Santo Luis and Chad Wagler (5-3) combined to blank the league's top offense over the last 5 1/3 innings. Legends pitchers scattered nine hits and three walks, striking out 11, and stranded 12 runners. Severino issued back-to-back one-out walks in the second, then opened with two balls to Jimmy Mojica. Pitching coach Charley Taylor called for time. "Charley talked about my mechanics, stay closed (at the shoulder), throw a fastball in the middle," Severino said. "So I stay closed and throw my fastball in the middle. And it's better." Steve Chapman and Brad Miller took called third strikes. Nick Moresi, who had two of Lexington's six hits, drew a one-out walk in the third. Brandon Caipen, looking to bunt, did out of self-defense mode when Mike Ramlow's pitch came right at him. That moved Moresi to second. Taylor, who struck out with the bases full to end Saturday's 5-4 loss, dropped a run-scoring single just in front of Mojica, who got a late break in left. "I kind of let loose on my swing a little bit and got jammed," Taylor said. "I think it may have fooled Mojica out there a little bit. Luckily, it dropped in and we got a run." The Power tied in the fifth. Miller doubled, then scored on Andy Lefave's two-out single. Shawn Ferguson gave the Power four innings of shutout ball, but Matt Krtezschmar (0-1) took over to open the 10th. He plunked leadoff batter Tyler Evans. "It was nice to get on base," said Evans, who joined the team Saturday from the independent Florence Freedom. Ralphie Henriquez twice failed to bunt. So, on a 2-2 count, he laced a single. "I wanted him to keep bunting when he fouled off a pitch," Langbehn said. "Then I ended up taking it off and he singled. It was good situational hitting." Moresi not only got a bunt down, he beat it out for a hit. One out later, again in a bases-full situation, Taylor fouled a 2-2 pitch to stay alive. Then he drove a ball to the wall in right, scoring Evans with the winning run. "I figured he had to come to me, so I tried to wait and drive it," Taylor said. "Fortunately, I connected." NOTES: The Legends continued the outstanding defense they have shown throughout the homestand. SS Tim Torres went deep into the hole to rob Kenny Holmberg of a sixth-inning hit. 3B Koby Clemens kept a couple of hard-hit bouncers in front of him, recovering in time to throw out speedsters Brent Brewer in the fifth and Charlie Fermaint in the seventh. RF Jordan Parraz twice made long runs to the foul line, snagging John Alonso fly balls in the fourth and sixth. Brevard County reliever Ben Stanczyk (4-1) allowed one unearned run on one hit, striking out one and walking one in 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Patrick Ryan notched his first save, despite giving up two runs on one hit, fanning three and walking one in 2 2/3 frames. Starter Robert Hinton yielded a run in four innings. Link for full preview article, excerpt follows: web.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=milb The North lineup will have a distinctive Huntsville flavor with four of the starters, including pitcher Mark DiFelice, coming from the Stars. DiFelice saw his scoreless-inning streak snapped at 37 2/3 innings when he gave up a pair of seventh-inning runs to Tennessee on Wednesday. It was the first runs he had allowed since May 23, yet he improved to 6-1 while keeping his ERA at an impressive 1.62. He has appeared in 26 games, although he has only started the last three. The Hunstville tandem of Steve Sollmann [first base] and Lou Palmisano [catcher] will bat second and third. 23. Link while active, text follows: www.kentucky.com/271/story/118830.html Clemens' RBI bunt ignites five-run rally By Mark Maloney MMALONEY@HERALD-LEADER.COM Baseball is a funny game and, for winners at least, fun. Yesterday, the Lexington Legends experienced both. Koby Clemens' bunt single scored Tim Torres -- from second -- to tie the game and trigger a five-run sixth inning as the Legends overpowered West Virginia 6-2 at Applebee's Park. "I like looking for things like that," Torres said of his two-base dash home. "Baseball, unexpected things happen. ... When you play hard, things like that are possible." The Legends won for a fourth time in five games. Trailing 2-1, the Legends sent 10 batters to the plate in the five-run sixth. Reliever D.J. Lidyard (3-2) opened the inning by walking Torres and Jordan Parraz. Clemens bunted hard, just past Lidyard. By the time shortstop Brent Brewer got to the ball, Torres already was well past third. "When I saw the ball get past the pitcher, I knew I had a chance," Torres said. "And I took an extra peek to see if anybody else was around, as I was running full speed. I never hesitated or slowed down." Torres slid in with his left foot, under the tag of catcher Andy Bouchie. Parraz and Clemens advanced an extra base on Brewer's throw. Lidyard struck out Drew Holder, and Bouchie withstood a body block by Parraz for a force play at the plate. But Ralphie Henriquez lashed an RBI single to center. Nick Moresi, whose third-inning homer tied things at 1, greeted reliever Jose Romero with a two-run double. He scored when Brandon Caipen ripped a triple. "Two-out RBI," Manager Gregg Langbehn said. "That's what you need to do. You've got to pick each other up. ... Guys are a little more confident than they were earlier in the season." Clemens finished 3-for-3 and also walked. Moresi and Caipen each had two of the Legends' nine hits. Moresi's fifth homer of the season was the only run allowed by starter Alex Periard. "He threw me two sliders before that, so I was able to read it a little bit," Moresi said. "He threw me one inside and I just kind of reacted, let my hands go and made pretty good contact." Legends starter Bud Norris was effective through 4 2/3 innings. With 90-degree heat at game time, he gave up a run on five hits and four walks. He stranded five runners in the first two innings. The run scored as Charlie Fermaint and Brewer singled to open the game, ahead of Andy Lefave's double. "I just felt like I needed to go out and throw strikes, and they put a couple good swings on the ball," Norris said. "Obviously I worked myself in a jam. But (strikes) is how you make big pitches and get out of jams, and I felt in the first inning that's exactly what I did." Norris left with two outs and the bases full in the fifth. Reid Kelly (1-1) got Bouchie on one pitch, which was lined to Torres at shortstop. West Virginia took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, but stranded two more runners, leaving 13 on base for the game.

Less than 24 hours after the Brewers were shut down by Billings Mustangs pitcher Luis Montano, their bats came alive. Steffan Wilson and Eric Fryer each drove in three runs as Helena pounded Billings 13-1 at Saturday Kindrick Legion Field. Not to be outdone by the hitting, Helena hurler Donovan Hand was in top form, holding the Billings offense to one hit in five innings. The 6-foot-4 righty was throwing his heater in the low 90s and using his offspeed pitches well. Hand, picked in the 14th round this year by the Brewers, is out of Jacksonville State in Alabama, his home state. He was perfect for over three innings until he drilled Mustang Brandon Menchaca in the leg with an errant fastball with one out in the fourth. Hand struck out six. The one hit he gave up was a short single to right field by Brett Bartles in the fifth. The next inning, Hand stayed in the dugout in order to give the bullpen some action. "Hand threw very well," said Brewers manager Jeff Isom. "He located his fastball well and got them swinging at the offspeed stuff. We got ahead of hitters and that's what we've been talking about doing." The Brewer bats provided a welcome backdrop to the defense. Helena came up with 15 hits, including doubles by seven different Brewers. "We scored some runs early," said Isom. Early indeed. The first six Brewers that came to the plate scored after Billings starter Andrew Bowman had some control issues. A single by left fielder Kurt Crowell brought home leadoff man Lee Haydel, who had reached on an infield hit. After Zelous Wheeler reached on an error, Wilson had a two-run single. Wilson was 3-for-4 on the night with a double and two runs scored. After Wilson's hit, Bowman struck out Anthony Wycklendt, then was pulled for Matt Klinker, who lasted until the fourth. "It's good to see, especially after last night," said Isom. "We went to right field, which we've been working on." The hits kept coming for the Brewers. Helena chased Klinker after the first four batters reached safely. The Brewers hit three doubles in the inning, bringing in five more runs. Helena batted around twice in the game, once in the first and again in the fourth. Nick Tyson, Wes Etheridge and Bobby Bramhall all pitched relief for the Brewers. "The bullpen needed work. They pitched well." Isom said. Helena went to 12-8 on the season. The Brewers will finish their series with Billings on Monday, then travel to Idaho for a three-game set with Idaho Falls.
