I'm hoping colbyjack will see this shortly and explain just how it all works, but the Brewers do have a strong presence in making early contact with premier high school players via their involvement in California's Area Code Games, probably moreso than any other organization -- Link while active, text follows: ssbaseball.rivals.com/con...CID=689564 Saratoga, CA - It was the final tryout for the 2007 Area Code Games this summer with 100 players from Northern California in attendance at West Valley College to show case their skills in front of MLB Scouts and college coaches. Now the tough decision for the Milwaukee Brewers Area Code Staff, to chose the best 50 players from California, to be on their Area Code Team. Catcher Michael Turay had a good day at the tryout. The 5-10, 175 pound catcher is out of Davis High School in Davis, California. Posting a 60-yard time of 7.22 he showed a good display of catching and throwing. He was one of the better catchers at the workout with solid fundamentals. Running a 7.06 in the 60-yard, first baseman Ryan Rieger is out of Woodcreek High School in Roseville, California. The lefty showed well during batting practice with a nice swing and a good approach at the plate. In the afternoon session (the simulated game) he was one of two players to hit one out. "I got a pitch to hit and was able to drive it," he said of his home run. "I did pretty good today, I was more confident this time," Rieger said of his second time out here. He added that right now, hitting is the strongest part of his game. Not only for the homer he hit, but the solid round of batting practice he took as well. "I lift six days a week," Rieger said of his off season regiment. He added that the biggest improvement because of working out is the increase of strength. For a second year Kareem Edwards out of Encinal High School made it to an Area Code Baseball Tryout. In 2007 he hit about .390 with over 20 stolen bases. He posted one of the fastest 60-yard times of the tryout with a 6.54. He had a good overall day at the tryout both in the outfield showing a good arm and at the plate spraying line drives and showing off his speed in the afternoon session. "I think I did pretty good," said Edwards of his day today. "I could have done better with the bat, but overall it was pretty good. With having the experience of last year under his belt, Edward knew what to think and to expect, which gave him an advantage of sorts over the other players at the tryout. "Last year I was a young guy and I had an advantage this year as one of the older guys," Edwards remarked. As for the pitchers, Kevin Eichorn out of Aptos High School threw the ball well. With good mechanics on the mound, he was clocked in the high 80's. Lefty Josh Poytress out of Fowler High School was clocked in the mid 80's. He too had good mechanics and had good command when throwing to the live batters. He also had a good feel for pitching on the mound. Finally out of the 2009 class, Scott Griggs is out of San Ramon Valley. At 6-2, 180 pounds, Griggs is a big kid. He had good mechanics and was impressive as he was clocked in the low 90's during the simulated game. With all the 2009 showing well, look for the 2009 class in Northern California to be solid.

Link while active, text follows: www.unionleader.com/artic...b5dea91bc5 First-time father Miller promoted to Double-A By KEVIN GRAY Union Leader (New Hampshire) Staff Sports Writer The summer of 2007 has been full of lifestyle changes, but Pelham High graduate Derek Miller hasn't stopped recording outs for the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Two weeks after the birth of his son, Miller was promoted to the Huntsville Stars, for whom he pitched six innings in a Southern League debut Friday night. The southpaw yielded three runs and took a no-decision in his team's 5-3 win over the Tennessee Smokies. Miller was slated to pitch against Tennessee outfielder Sam Fuld in his first Double-A assignment, but Fuld, another Granite Stater, was given the night off. Not surprisingly, a promotion to Double-A didn't faze Miller. Even the birth of Nolan Ryan Miller, born June 20 in Melbourne, Fla., couldn't throw the new father off his game. In his first outing as a parent, Miller went out and pitched six strong innings, a quality start typical of his 2007 season. As a member of the Single-A Brevard County Manatees before his promotion, Miller was able to live at home with wife Robyn and closely follow the pregnancy while pitching in the Florida State League. "It's been an interesting season. There's been a lot of excitement, and I've been trying to stay even-keel when I'm on the mound," said Miller, who won three championships at Pelham and never lost a game as a starter. He checked into a Huntsville hotel on Thursday and nearly beat the Smokies the following day, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts. "Basically, I was just trying to give the guys a chance to win and do my job. I blew a two-run lead but kept it close enough, and we pulled it out in the end," Miller said. Miller, who met his wife at the University of Vermont, said he didn't have to push hard for the naming of his son. Robyn agreed early on Nolan Ryan for a boy, a tribute to the Hall of Famer whose 5,714 career strikeouts are the most in major-league history. "Just a dominant power pitcher with seven no-hitters. He's one of the best of all time," the proud father said. "A lot of people like the name Nolan, so I didn't have to sell it too much. I told my wife, 'If it's a girl, you can name her.'" Miller, himself a workhorse throughout his pro career, already has reached 100 innings with a 4-4 record and 3.75 ERA this season. The six-foot lefty has been popping 90 mph on the radar and developing a slider, which he recently started throwing in games. Another change for Miller has been toeing the left side of the pitching rubber, a move to create more deception against right-handed batters. Previously, Miller had been setting up on the right side of the rubber. Results have been positive against righties, who are batting only .219 against Miller. (Lefties are hitting a robust .314, however.) The 25-year-old Miller, a 47th-round pick in 2004, will make his next start at Chattanooga this week. His career remains on a track to the majors after moving up each season for the Brewers. "I just take it day by day and enjoy what I'm doing. It's an honor to be out there," he said. "Not everybody gets that opportunity. There's a lot worse things I could be doing than playing a game for a living." Fuld, of Durham, had been looking forward to facing Miller but didn't mind a night off on Friday. The center fielder has had a productive season for Tennessee, batting .308 as the team's leadoff hitter. Fuld and Miller also crossed paths at spring training, and they played against each other in American Legion action years ago. Watching from the visiting dugout on Friday, Fuld was most impressed with Miller's mound presence. "His stuff isn't unbelievable, but he's a solid pitcher across the board. He's got a good fastball, and I think what makes him effective is he challenges guys in and out with his fastball," Fuld said. "He shows a determination, and he's pretty fearless out there." Nolan Ryan Miller, born June 20, likely inherited the baseball gene. But what if he's a lefty like dad? "That's all right. He can make a name for himself," Miller said.

Link to New York Times while active, text follows: www.nytimes.com/2007/07/0...ref=slogin The Infield That May Make Milwaukee Famous By MURRAY CHASS The National League infield for the All-Star Game on Tuesday night will be Prince Fielder, Chase Utley, José Reyes and David Wright. What are the chances that in a few years Fielder could be joined by Rickie Weeks, J. J. Hardy and Ryan Braun? Those four already make up the Milwaukee Brewers? infield. ?It would be a tough thing to get all four,? Doug Melvin, the Brewers? general manager, said, ?but we?re proud of the players we have.? With good reason. All four players are young and talented and have played a role in the Brewers? presence atop the N.L. Central for the past two and a half months. Actually, Braun ? a 23-year-old rookie third baseman ? has only been a part of the first-place run since May 25. But he made an instant impact, hitting .342 in 38 games with 10 home runs and 31 runs batted in, a .382 on-base percentage and a .645 slugging percentage entering yesterday. ?He?s been a monster,? Melvin said. ?He?s going to be a very good player. He will match up with David Wright.? Braun came to the major leagues too late to be included on the All-Star ballot, but his infield mates did well in the voting. Fielder beat out Albert Pujols, Ryan Howard, Derrek Lee, Carlos Delgado and Todd Helton at first base and placed second to Ken Griffey Jr. in the N.L. voting. Fielder, 23, led the league in home runs with 27, had driven in 66 runs and had a .376 on-base percentage and a .604 slugging percentage. Second baseman Weeks (slumping recently to .223) and shortstop Hardy (.285, 18 home runs), both 24, placed second at their respective positions in the fan voting, and Hardy was elected to the team as a reserve in the players? balloting. The Mets, with Reyes and Wright, were the only other team to have two infielders elected by any means. Besides their All-Star credentials and potential, the Brewers? infielders have an interesting history. All four were Brewers draft choices, as were the team?s three starting outfielders, suggesting that the Brewers have some all-star front-office people as well. The Brewers drafted all four infielders and right fielder Corey Hart at the direction of Jack Zduriencik, their scouting director, who preceded Melvin?s 2002 arrival in Milwaukee. ?When you come in as general manager, you talk about a lot of moves you can make,? Melvin said. ?But one of the best moves I made was retaining Jack as scouting director. We studied the drafts and felt he had done a good job with them and decided to let him continue. You need some stability in scouting.? The Brewers drafted Hardy in the second round in 2001. ?We were probably one of the few organizations that liked J. J. where we took him,? Zduriencik said. ?We had a huge debate in the room about picking him in the first round. Others didn?t feel that way about him. There were some issues about whether J. J. could run. We had a private workout with J. J., and I walked away saying he can hit, field and throw.? Fielder was the seventh player picked over all in 2002. ?Some people thought it was a controversial pick,? Zduriencik said, alluding to Fielder?s XXXL size. ?Some people were scared of his frame. Our area scout, Tom McNamara, was convinced that his makeup was solid. We thought he was the best hitter in the country, and we thought he had the most power in the country.? The son of the former major leaguer Cecil Fielder, Prince lost about 40 pounds from his sophomore year in high school to his senior year, Zduriencik said, adding: ?He was a much better athlete than people gave him credit for. Prince is a kid who has a lot of pride. He?s very comfortable with himself.? Weeks was the second player chosen in the 2003 draft. His selection followed a change in scouting strategy by the Brewers. ?We had a tendency to draft high school guys,? Melvin said. ?Fielder and Hardy were high school. We thought it would be a good idea if we could get a college player or two to catch up with Fielder and Hardy. If we had continued drafting high school guys, they?d still be in the minors.? Acting on that plan, the Brewers plucked Weeks from Southern University and Braun two years later from the University of Miami as the fifth player drafted. Washington selected third baseman Ryan Zimmerman with the fourth pick in that draft, and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki went to Colorado as the seventh selection. ?We liked Ryan,? Zduriencik said, explaining the Brewers? decision to draft Braun. ?It made all the sense in the world. We had J. J. at shortstop. Ryan had converted from shortstop to third. We thought he was an outstanding athlete.? The Brewers, Melvin said, felt that Braun was quicker than Tulowitzki and could steal bases. The scouting people, he added, ?saw the package of speed and power. Tulowitzki is a very good player, but the speed factor gave a little edge to Braun.? In Melvin?s view, ?Braun probably could?ve made our club out of spring training, but defensively he didn?t play well in the spring. We wanted him to go down and work on his defense a little. His offense was ready. We felt also we were sending a message that defense is important.?

Final: Billings (Reds) 4, Helena 0 Helena Site Game Summary: Mustangs shut out Brewers HELENA -- Helena entered the evening off a three-game road sweep of Billings, but Mustang pitcher Luis Montano shut down the Brewers offensive production Saturday night. Montano threw eight shutout innings and allowed just five hits as Billings defeated Helena 4-0. Billings scored three runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth inning, but the Mustangs needed just one run to defeat the quiet Brewer bats. Helena starter Evan Anundsen took the loss; he gave up six hits and four runs, and struck out six over five innings. Brewers reliever Curtis Pasma tossed four scoreless innings for another impressive relief stint. Pasma allowed two hits and struck out four Mustangs. Pasma also threw four shutout innings during his last outing July 2 against Great Falls. Brewer left fielder Mike Goetz had the only multi-hit game of the night for the home squad going 2-for-3. Other Helena hitters who recorded a single hit included Lee Haydel, Jordan Swaydan, and Zach McAngus. The loss drops Helena to 11-8 while Billings improves to 8-11. The Brewers will try to tie the series at 4:05 PM Sunday (5:05 Central) when they play host to the Mustangs. ***Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...807_01.txt Brewers blanked by Billings Mustangs By TOM COTTON, Helena Independent Record Sports Editor Luis Montano provided the calm after the storm for the beleaguered Billings Mustangs pitching staff Sat-urday night. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic silenced the Helena Brewer bats, giving up five hits in a 4-0 Billings win. Montano, a free agent signee for Cincinnati in 2003, located his spots well, got ahead the count and mixed his pitches in eight innings of work. "I liked what I saw," Brewers' manager Jeff Isom said of Montano. "He used both sides of the plate and just dominated our bats." The Brewers never got a runner past second base in the game and this came on the heels of a three game sweep of Billings in the Magic City. Helena scored 29 runs in the final two games of that series. This game was just the second start of the season for Montano and he lowered his ERA to 2.22 after the outing. He had to cool his heels for a while before game got underway. Heavy rains and a howling wind greeted fans at the beginning of the contest and caused a 20-minute delay. Once the game started, it took a while for both teams' bats to get warmed up. Helena starter Evan Anundsen set down Billings in order and Montano followed suit, shutting down the Brewers 1,2,3 in the bottom of the first. Anundsen was very solid throughout, allowing just two earned runs over five innings. In the third, Billings got on the board when Michael Jones scored on a groundout. Brandon Menchaca scored later in the inning on a double by Brandon Waring. Waring came home on a single by Michael McKinnon The next inning, the Brewers gave up an unearned run when Jason Bour scored thanks to an error by Matt Cline. That was their second error of the game. "In the third and fourth we gave them extra outs," Isom said. "It's hard enough to get three outs." The four runs put up in those two innings were more than enough for Billings, who controlled the contest the rest of the way. Montano was sharp until he was replaced in the ninth by Scott Gaffney. Curtis Pasma pitched well in relief for Helena. Mike Goetz was the only Helena player with two hits. Fulton Kendrick had two hits for Billings. Despite the loss, Helena remains in a first-place tie with Great Falls in the Pioneer League North Division standings. The White Sox fell to Missoula Saturday night. Billings and Helena will meet again today at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central) for the second game of their three-game set. Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Laynce Nix photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2437 Nix Homers Twice, Sounds Rout RedHawks OKLAHOMA CITY ? Laynce Nix went 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead the Nashville Sounds to an 11-3 rout of the Oklahoma RedHawks on Saturday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. It was the third straight victory for the Sounds (54-35), who continue to lead the PCL American Conference Northern Division by five games. Nix, who played for the RedHawks during the 2005 & 2006 seasons, paced a 15-hit Nashville attack that also included three-hit efforts from Chris Barnwell and Joe Dillon. Oklahoma grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Freddy Guzman scored on a Nate Gold sacrifice fly. The Sounds rallied for four runs in the top of the third inning against RedHawks starter Mike Wood, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Barnwell and Brad Nelson, who extended his longest hitting streak of the year to 11 games. The RedHawks pulled within a run in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs against Adam Pettyjohn, including a Guzman solo homer ? the outfielder?s fourth roundtripper of the year. Nashville pulled ahead 8-3 in the fifth with another four-run inning against Wood. Nix plated the first score with an RBI double before scoring on Dillon?s team-leading 18th longball of the season, a two-run shot to left that was his second blast in as many games against Oklahoma. Vinny Rottino scored the inning?s fourth run in unearned fashion following a Wood throwing error. AUDIO: Nix Doubles Off The Wall -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-7.mp3 The Sounds reached double digits in the sixth when Nix belted a two-run homer off RedHawks reliever Steven Rowe, the outfielder?s 10th four-bagger of the season. The blast increased the Nashville lead to 10-3. Nix went deep again in the eighth for Nashville, swatting a one-out solo homer to right off Chris Baker to notch the Sounds? eighth multi-homer game of the season (his first). The home run, Nix?s 12th of the year, brought the score to its final 11-3. Pettyjohn (4-2) picked up the victory for the Sounds after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings of work. Wood (7-2), who entered the game with a Pacific Coast League-leading 2.44 ERA, was hammered for eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits in five frames to take the loss for the RedHawks. The teams wrap up the series with a 2:05 p.m. CT finale on Sunday afternoon. All-Star right-hander Chris Oxspring (6-5, 3.84) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma right-hander Alfredo Simon (3-7, 6.56).

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars' Narron gives kin reason to smile Cousin of fired Reds manager beats Smokies By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com The past week was hardly a time of joy for the Narron Family of Goldsboro, N.C. On Sunday, Jerry Narron, one of eight members of the family to have played professional baseball, was fired as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. On Monday, his cousin Sam Narron, a 6-foot-7 lefty for the Huntsville Stars, lasted only two innings and gave up six runs in a loss at West Tenn. On Saturday, Sam brought back a little sunshine. With the real estate mantra of "location, location, location," Narron pitched seven strong innings, striking out seven and allowing only six hits to lead the Stars over the Tennessee Smokies 7-1. The Stars have won three in a row going into the three-day All-Star break. Despite Narron's struggles on Monday, pitching coach Rich Sauveur noted his two previous games had also been "outstanding. He just needs to pitch like that the rest of the half." Catcher Lou Palmisano, in what he described as a "mini-rut" (0-for-17), jacked a two-run homer in the seventh after driving in a pair of runs early on two sacrifice flies. Steve Moss had a solo homer in the second and Brendan Katin and Adam Heether had RBI doubles in a three-run third. Mel Stocker collected two stolen bases and daringly scored on Palmisano's first sac fly, in shallow left. The Smokies are an aggressive team at the plate, making them even more vulnerable to Narron's off-speed pitches and modest fastball. He has a 1.29 ERA against Tennessee, with a 2-1 record and 14 strikeouts in 21 innings. "I tend to do better against teams like that because I can change speeds, if I have command of my fastball," he said. Narron, who sat out 2005 after elbow surgery and spent much of last year working out of the bullpen or starting with a limited pitch count, now feels as if he is pitching "with the reins off." Still, he dropped his first three decisions and had an ERA above 6 when he finally collected his first win, with eight innings of shutout ball May 4 against West Tenn. "It's been up-and-down to say the least," Narron said. "I think we're on the upslope now."

MiLB.com: Norrick stifles Gamel, Manatees Tyler Norrick ended Mat Gamel's hitting streak and tossed six dominant innings as Palm Beach blanked host Brevard County, 2-0, to split Saturday's doubleheader. Gamel went 0-for-3 to end his 33-game run, which was the longest in the Florida State League since Joe Altobelli hit in a record 36 consecutive games in 1951. Norrick (8-5), a 23-year-old left-hander, allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out six to lower his ERA to 2.96. Luke Gregerson worked around one hit while fanning two in the seventh to record his 18th save for the Cardinals (10-6), who dropped the opener, 8-5. Norrick retired Gamel on a pop-up to shortstop in the first, a flyout to right in the third and another pop-up to short in the sixth. James Rapoport lifted a sacrifice fly in the second and hit a run-scoring single in the sixth for Palm Beach. Lorenzo Cain, Cole Gillespie and Ryan Barba had the hits for the Manatees (10-7). Brevard County starter Rafael Lluberes (5-5) gave up an unearned run on eight hits while fanning three over five frames to lose for the first time since June 4. -- Alan Friedman/MLB.com

The Manatees (10-6) trailed, 5-3, in the seventh before Ned Yost and Freddie Parejo singled, Ryan Barba sacrificed and pinch-hitter Angel Salome stroked a two-run double. Shanks worked around a hit in the seventh for his eighth save with the Manatees (17th overall). Starter Vince Perkins allowed five runs on seven hits in four frames. Brevard County's Mat Gamel, who is riding a Florida State League season-high 33-game hitting streak, did not play. Walters (2-1) surrendered six runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 5 2/3 frames. -- Alan Friedman/MLB.com

Final: Huntsville 7, Tennessee (Cubs) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1261 Palmisano Powers Stars to Victory Lou Palmisano hit a home run and drove in four to back the solid pitching of Sam Narron in Huntsville?s 7-1 victory Saturday in the last of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 9-11 in the second half and 46-42 overall, while the Smokies dropped to 10-10 in the second half to fall two and a half games behind North Division leading Chattanooga, which plays later Saturday night at Mississippi. Palmisano knocked in the game?s first run with a first inning sacrifice fly and Steve Moss?s solo home run in the second inning against Smokies? starter Donnie Veal made it 2-0 Huntsville. Another Palmisano sac fly in the third pushed the home team?s lead to 3-0 before Adam Heether and Brendan Katin doubled home runs later in the frame to make it 5-0. Veal was taken out after three innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits to fall to 5-6 on the season with half his losses coming against the Stars. Shanks three ground ball outs (naturally) to end it, a two-out single sandwiched within... web.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_pbcafa_2 Brevard County Game Log: Things looked bleak in the 4th when the first two Manatees reached without a run scoring... web.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_pbcafa_2
