Final: Albuquerque (Marlins) 5, Nashville 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Dennis Sarfate photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2341 Sounds Fall To Isotopes In Road Trip Opener ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Sounds reliever Dennis Sarfate issued a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk to Robert Andino with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to force home the game-winning run in Nashville?s 5-4 loss to Albuquerque on Friday evening at Isotopes Park in the opener of a four-game series. The loss was Nashville?s 13th in the club?s last 17 road games as the team?s woes away from Greer Stadium continued. The Sounds (25-23) suffered their tenth loss after the opponent plated the winning run in its final turn at the plate. After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the eighth, Sarfate gave up consecutive singles before walking pinch-hitter Todd Sears to fill the bags for Andino. Sarfate (1-4), who took the loss, was replaced on the hill after walking Andino and was ejected following a verbal exchange with the home plate umpire as he exited the field. The Sounds struck first, plating a run in the top of the first inning against Albuquerque starter Paul Mildren. Callix Crabbe drew a game-opening walk, was bunted to second by Chris Barnwell, advanced to third on a balk, then scored on a Laynce Nix sacrifice fly to left. Albuquerque knotted the score at 1-1 in the home half of the second when John Gall tripled off Sounds starter Tim Dillard then scored on a Brett Carroll RBI single. Gall finished 3-for-4 and missed hitting for the cycle by a single. The Isotopes jumped in front in the fourth with back-to-back home runs against Dillard. After former Sound Andrew Beattie walked to open the frame, PCL home run leader Val Pascucci blasted his 12th longball of the year, a two-run shot to left, to give Albuquerque its first lead of the night. Gall continued his strong evening when he followed with his fourth roundtripper of the season, a solo shot to left. Nashville got a run back in the sixth when Crabbe walked and later scored when Mildren?s strike three pitch to Nix escaped Isotopes catcher John Baker. The Sounds pulled within a score in the top of the seventh to make it a 4-3 contest. Vinny Rottino led off with a double to center and came plateward one batter later on a Jose Macias RBI single to left. Nashville completed its comeback in the eighth against the Isotopes bullpen when Crabbe crossed the plate for third time. The Sounds? leadoff batter doubled to left off Harvey Garcia and moved to third on a Chris Barnwell fly out before scampering home on a Baker passed ball. Nate Field (4-2) backed into a victory as the beneficiary of the late Albuquerque score after blowing a save in his two-thirds of an inning worked. Ross Wolf picked up his second save of the year by working a perfect ninth inning for the Isotopes. Dillard took a no-decision for the Sounds after allowing four runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. Joe Thatcher turned in a solid relief outing behind Dillard, working 1 1/3 hitless frames and recording four strikeouts. The teams continue the series with another 8:05 p.m. CT meeting on Saturday evening at Isotopes Park. Nashville will send right-hander Chris Oxspring (2-3, 3.32) to the hill to face Albuquerque right-hander Nic Ungs (2-1, 5.82). Nashville Box Score: Sarfate lucky Luther Hackman stranded his baserunners, or an ugly outing could have been uglier; Joe Thatcher just biding his time, baby... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_albaaa_1 Nashville Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...a_albaaa_1

Crew delivered a two-run single in the second inning before play was halted due to rain on Thursday. He also lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Manatees (29-18) a 5-1 cushion. Michael Bell and Angel Salome hit solo homers, their second and third, respectively, to power Brevard County to its second straight win and seventh in nine games. The victory went to reliever Josh Wahpepah (4-4), who gave up one run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two. Dave Johnson tossed 2 1/3 scoreless frames for his fourth save. Reds starter Johnny Cueto (2-4) dropped his third straight decision after surrendering four runs on five hits in three-plus innings. Jay Bruce singled twice and scored a run for Sarasota (32-15), which had a seven-game winning streak snapped. -- Daren Smith/MLB.com ***Manatees sweep away Reds Angel Salome hit a walk-off two-run homer to give Brevard County a 3-1 win over visiting Sarasota and a sweep of Friday's doubleheader. With the score tied, 1-1, Lorenzo Cain led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single off reliever Luis Montano (2-1). After Michael Bell struck out, Salome deposited a pitch over the right-field fence for his second homer of the twinbill and fifth this season. The blast made a winner of Kevin Roberts (2-0), who tossed a 1-2-3 seventh. Brevard County starter Will Inman struck out a career-high 12 batters over six innings, limiting the Reds (32-16) to one run on three hits and a walk. He grabbed the overall Minor League strikeout lead with 77 and tops the Florida State League with a 1.36 ERA. In his last five starts, the 20-year-old right-hander has given up only three earned runs on 20 hits over 31 innings with 43 strikeouts and nine walks. After taking the opener, 5-2, the Manatees (30-18) trailed, 1-0, before pinch-hitter J.R. Hopf delivered an RBI single in the sixth. It came off reliever Derrik Lutz, who allowed one run on one hit and three walks with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Reds starter Daryl Thompson pitched 4 1/3 scoreless frames, scattering five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Michael Griffin led off the game with his fourth homer to account for Sarasota's offense. -- Daren Smith/MLB.com

Final: Huntsville 3, Mobile (Diamondbacks) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1180 Pettyjohn Pitches Stars Back Into Top Spot Adam Pettyjohn worked eight sensational innings in his longest outing of the season to pitch Huntsville past Mobile 3-1 Friday night in the middle game of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars won for the first time in the series, snapped a four-game road losing streak and moved back into a first place tie with Tennessee atop the North Division at 24-22, while the BayBears slipped to 25-23 and fell six games behind South Division-leading Mississippi. Jarrred Ball legged out a bunt base hit to open the third inning, stole second and scored on a one-out double to give Mobile a 1-0 edge. Huntsville had left runners at second and third with one out in the first when Ruben Mateo popped up and Carlos Corporan flied out and left the bases loaded in the third inning when Corporan flied out to left field. Drew Anderson doubled with one out in the fifth, moved to third base on a single by Steve Moss and then scored when shortstop Emilio Bonifacio could not handle the relay throw from Ball, the left fielder. Moss advanced to second on the error, to third on a ground ball out and then scored on a single by Corporan that put the Stars on top, 2-1. Ruben Mateo, who had been hit by a pitch in the at-bat before Corporan?s, scored from second on a two-out single by Adam Heether, who knocked in his first run on the road since April 23 at Montgomery. Pettyjohn retired nine in a row following the Bonifacio double before Wilkin Castillo doubled with one out in the sixth. The veteran southpaw then set down the next six batters he faced before a Ronnie Merrill infield single. Pettyjohn retired the next two hitters he faced and finished the night allowing a season-low one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out four. Pettyjohn earned his first win since April 23 at Montgomery and his third on the road by recording 14 ground ball outs. Marino Salas gave up a one-out single in the ninth before striking out Justin Upton and retiring Carlos Gonzalez on a soft liner to first to preserve the win and earn his ninth save in as many chances. The series continues Saturday night when Huntsville will send left-hander Steve Hammond to the hill against BayBears? right-hander Matt Green. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Will Inman is superhuman. After six innings (his night now over), check out how he retired the final seven batters he faced: Sarasota Top 4th - Eric Eymann strikes out swinging. Sarasota Top 5th - Raul Tablado strikes out swinging. - BJ Szymanski strikes out swinging. - Michael Griffin strikes out swinging. Sarasota Top 6th - Michael DeJesus strikes out swinging. - Jay Bruce strikes out swinging. - Adam Rosales strikes out swinging. After surrendering a home run to the very first batter of the game, here's Will's final line: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 12 K, just the one run allowed Alas, he won't get the win -- J.R. Hopf did just hit a two-out RBI single, however, game tied at 1-1 after six innings -- remember, this is a seven-inning game.

Some tidbits from the Charleston Daily Mail piece that focused on Jeremy Jeffress' return: On a $1 drink night at Appalachian Power Park, most of the 5,776 fans didn't even know what might have brought a bigger ballpark buzz. It wasn't cheap beer and it wasn't the West Virginia Power's 4-2 victory over Augusta Thursday, earning a split of a four-game series between the South Atlantic League's division leaders. It wasn't even the fact that the Power handed GreenJackets' right-hander Adam Cowert, who shares the SAL lead with seven wins, only his fourth loss in 21 decisions in two pro seasons. Brent Brewer had a very good night of his own, going 3-for-3 and starting West Virginia's two-run sixth-inning rally besides knocking in the Power's final run in the seventh. The shortstop, who passed up a Florida State football scholarship as a receiver, had his fifth three-hit game of the season and raised his average to .275. "Honestly, I'm surprised I'm doing this well, but I've worked hard to pick things up," Brewer said. "I struggled a lot at first and I was seeing a lot of off-speed stuff. Now, I just try to stay back and wait on the pitch a bit longer and I'm seeing the ball much better." Power points -- The Power (30-14) opens a four-game holiday weekend home series tonight at 7:05 (6:05 Central) against Greenville (19-27). West Virginia will send lefty Luis Ramirez (1-1) to the mound against Drive right-hander Chris Jones (2-4). ... Power right fielder Chuck Caulfield's eighth-inning single was his 58th hit of the season, ranking second in the SAL. ... West Virginia third baseman Taylor Green's gritty stop-and-grab of a tough hop with the bases loaded ended the GreenJacket eighth, turned a certain double into a groundout and saved the game from being tied. ... The Power's Memorial Day series closer Monday is a 1:05 PM start (12:05 Central). The time is listed erroneously on some schedules at 7:05 (6:05 Central).

As our good friend from Charleston, who is a "host family" dad, posted in Friday's Link Report: Link while active, text follows -- www.dailymail.com/story/S...oin-Power/ Jeffress to join Power Jack Bogaczyk Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor On a $1 drink night at Appalachian Power Park, most of the 5,776 fans didn't even know what might have brought a bigger ballpark buzz. The real buzz was about today's impending arrival of Jeremy Jeffress, a 19-year-old right-hander who threw a 102-mph fastball last season after being the Milwaukee Brewers' first-round pick in the June 2006 draft. Jeffress (pronounced JEFF-ERS) will become the third first-round selection the Brewers have sent to Charleston in as many seasons. "I saw Jeremy a little in spring training," Power pitching coach John Curtis said Thursday night. "He has an electric fastball, really good stuff command-wise. Sometimes you watch him, he's throwing so hard and it just looks so effortless." According to the 2007 Baseball America Prospect Handbook, Jeffress "regularly throws his fastball in the high 90s, hit 98 mph throughout 2006 and topped out at 102." Baseball America ranked Jeffress as the No. 4 overall prospect in the Brewers' organization. Jeffress starred at Halifax County (Va.) High before becoming the 16th overall pick in last year's draft. Jeffress, who is from the same southside Virginia region as 2006 Power pitching star Will Inman, signed for a $1.55 million bonus. He has been in extended spring training in Arizona. "He's coming here?" asked shortstop Brent Brewer, who was the Brewers' second-round pick just behind Jeffress. "He's pretty good. Jeremy can bring it. He'll be a really good addition to our pitching staff." Jeffress' promotion is related to left-hander Zach Braddock, who leads all of minor league baseball in strikeouts-to-nine innings ratio, going on the disabled list. Braddock is expected to miss three starts (the first was Thursday) with inflammation from what Curtis believes is a mild case of tendinitis. "We need to make absolutely sure Zach's OK before we send him back out there," Curtis said. "When Patrick Ryan moved up to Brevard County (high Class A) today, it left us with only 12 pitchers. "I'd expect Jeffress won't pitch until Tuesday (when the Power opens a road trip at Kannapolis). It's likely we'll work him in tandem with probably (Alex) Periard, because we're splitting Mike Ramlow and Periard from a tandem." Brewers minor league pitching instructor Jim Rooney is scheduled to arrive in Charleston on Monday to help smooth Jeffress' transition to full-season ball. The hard-throwing right-hander spent last season with the Rookie League Arizona Brewers, turning in so-so results. Jeffress had a 2-5 record in 13 appearances, including four starts, with a 5.88 earned run average. He struck out 37 in 33 2/3 innings, but also walked 25, threw 13 wild pitches and hit six batters. Curtis doesn't plan on pitching Jeffress during this homestand "because getting his first outing on the road will help him get acclimated." "He may only go 3-4 innings his first time out to get his feet wet," Curtis added. "We think coming here (to a first-place club) will be a good environment for him to compete in, but his development is far more important than anything else." Curtis says Jeffress' impressive fastball is joined by a curve "with which he's scuffling a little bit," and a changeup that just will improve once Rooney and Curtis start tinkering. "He's got a faster fastball than Inman," Curtis said, when asked to compare Jeffress to the pitcher who was 10-1 for the Power last season. "The average Major League fastball is 89-90 (mph). Will could touch 91, maybe 92. "Jeremy routinely is at 93-94 and he will probably clock out at 96-97 some nights. He's not a big kid (6 feet, 1 inch, 185 pounds), but he's long-legged. The curve and change will be better with some mechanical things we can fix. "He has the same kind of tempo as Yovani Gallardo (second-round pick who pitched for the Power in 2005), but he's not nearly the pitcher Gallardo was here ... but I'm sure looking forward to working with him."

Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=56371 Braun earns promotion, Sounds earn win By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent Even when he showed up at the spring training facility in Arizona before any of his teammates. Even when he hit the cover off the ball all season long here in Nashville. Even when seat-warming third basemen Craig Counsell and Tony Graffanino had their collective batting average hovering around the Mendoza line, the Milwaukee Brewers made Ryan Braun wait just a little bit longer for the big league call-up he?d already been waiting for his whole life. On Thursday night, just minutes after the Sounds? come-from-behind 9-5 victory over Memphis in front of 8,538 fans at Greer Stadium, the wait ended for Braun. Braun was brilliant in Music City this season. He hit .342 with 10 homers and 22 RBIs, while playing in the spotlight that has shined in recent years on top prospects like Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks. Known in spring training as one of the hardest workers in the Brewers organization, this is Braun?s first big league promotion. ?I just found out five minutes [after the game] when [sounds manager Frank Kremblas] called me into the office and told me about it,? Braun said. ?I?m thrilled, I?m excited. It?s something I?ve been looking forward to my whole life. I just can?t wait to get out there and get started.? Braun, a Southern California native, will meet up with the Brewers in San Diego where they are about to begin a series with the Padres. ?For me it?s the culmination of everything I?ve worked for in my baseball career to this point, so I?m thrilled,? Braun said. Braun plugged away in Nashville even though the journeymen the Brewers had platooning at third ? Counsell and Graffanino ? were struggling at the plate. Braun was told to work on his defense and stay patient. Counsell and Graffanino were hitting .231 and .187 as of Thursday. But one day after Brewers general manager Doug Melvin left town after three games of diligent scouting, Braun was called up. ?Obviously, I?ve been looking forward to getting my opportunity for a while now,? Braun said. ?More than anything else I understand the complexity of [the] decision, but basically it?s out of my hands so what I tried to do was basically not think about it. I just tried to come out and work hard every day.? As for the game itself, the star was Nashville?s Joe Dillon, who hit a homer and two doubles to pace the Sounds offense. Dillon also scored three runs. ?I?m definitely feeling a lot better at the plate,? said Dillon, who has three homers in his last six games. ?I feel like I?m getting my confidence back and getting my swing back.? The Sounds (25-22) blew the game open in the seventh. Trailing by one, they scored five runs on six hits, including four for extra bases. ?That?s baseball,? Dillon said. ?You battle back and the game?s not over until it?s over.? Reliever Elmer Dessens was put on the 15-day disabled list to make room for Braun.
