  3. West Virginia Site: POWER AND SHOREBIRDS CANCELLED Monday's double header between the West Virginia Power and Delmarva Shorebirds has been cancelled due to unplayable field conditions at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The games will not be made up because the two teams do not meet again in Delmarva this season, and they do not meet again in the first half. The West Virginia Power are off on Tuesday, but will begin a three game series at home against the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Wednesday night. LHP Brae Wright (0-0, 2.89) will get the start for the Power. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

  5. Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=55670 Music City not sweet to Sounds reliever By Nate Rau, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent Jose Capellan wants nothing to do with the Nashville Sounds. If he had his wish, Capellan would put Music City and the Milwaukee Brewers organization behind him without so much as a glance into his rearview mirror. Capellan is a relative baseball rarity ? a minor league relief pitcher demanding a trade. Traditionally minor leaguers with one year of experience don?t have the leverage to demand much of anything. The Sounds reliever began his behind-the-scenes tirade after he didn?t make Milwaukee?s opening day roster in spring training. Through his agent, Bill Rego, Capellan asked to be traded prior to the season. There was even doubt Capellan would report to Nashville for the Sounds? opener on April 5. Capellan did report, but he has not relented from his demand since then. Capellan wouldn?t talk to the City Paper about his unhappiness with the Brewers, but Rego reiterated his client?s stance last week. ?There are a lot of organizations that don?t have the pitching depth the Brewers have,? Rego said to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. ?I think his services could be better used elsewhere.? The job of handling the disgruntled 26-year old pitcher fell to Sounds manager Frank Kremblas. Asked to speak to Capellan?s character, Kremblas said, ?he?s a quiet guy who doesn?t talk very much. I?ve never heard any of the guys in the clubhouse have any problems with him.? Hardly a ringing endorsement. Prior to the final game of Nashville?s first homestand last week, Capellan stood in the outfield mingling with Oklahoma players while the RedHawks took batting practice. In the meantime, Capellan?s Sounds teammates were in the clubhouse playing cards and hanging out with each other while waiting for the game to begin. However poor his attitude may be towards the organization which traded for him two years ago, Capellan has pitched well in the early going this season. Through Sunday, he hadn?t allowed an earned run in four appearances for the Sounds. As a Triple A manager, Kremblas regularly deals with players who have to cope with the disappointment of being sent down. In the past, Kremblas said he likes it when players are upset because it shows their competitive drive. Capellan spent all of last season in the big leagues with the Brewers. He was a workhorse, appearing 61 times and notching 16 holds. But his ERA was less than stellar at 4.60. In spring, Capellan?s ERA was over 5.00 and opponents hit .391 against him, leading to the demotion. ?There?s a fine line in how you relay that you?re upset,? Kremblas said. ?You have to be mature in the way that you handle it. I don?t think he did a very good job in that area.? Capellan?s Sounds teammate Vinny Rottino was in the same situation this spring. Rottino just barely missed out on making the Brewers? opening roster. Rottino?s reaction to the surprise demotion contrasts Capellan?s as starkly as possible. ?I thought I had a pretty good shot at staying with the team for opening day in the big leagues, you know that?s pretty special to think about,? Rottino said. ?When they told me [i didn?t make the roster], initially I was a bit shocked, disappointed. ?But the next morning, I just woke up and had a realization, ?I get to play baseball and get paid to do it.? It was a good thing to realize.? Capellan, who has received attention from San Francisco among other teams, couldn?t muster such a cheery outlook. The Journal Sentinel reported Capellan was so distraught he contemplated retirement before settling on his trade demand. ?I just think he overreacted,? Kremblas said. ?He?s going to have to make up his own mind how he?ll change if the same situation happens again.?
  6. Florida Today: Doing well. Though their stay in Brevard County was a short one, Yovani Gallardo and Ryan Braun left lasting impressions on Manatees fans last season. On Saturday, they did the same thing in Triple-A. Braun homered three times off of longtime major-leaguer Chan Ho Park and Gallardo had 12 strikeouts in six scoreless innings as the Nashville Sounds blasted the New Orleans Zephyrs 14-1. Both players started 2006 in Brevard County before being called up to Double-A Huntsville in late June. Braun was a terror at the plate and Gallardo dominated on the mound, including a June 9 performance against the Jupiter Hammerheads in which he came within two outs of recording a no-hitter. "When Braun and Gallardo were here last year, they put on exhibitions," Rogers said. "They're both going to have long careers and I think both are going to be household names." On Sunday, Pinner still was boasting about Braun's power display. "He is a horse; he is a stud," Pinner said. "It's like, who's going to be the star this year? As they say, we're growing them good on the farm." Future doubleheader. Sunday's scheduled game against St. Lucie was rained out and will be made up on Saturday, April 28 as part of a doubleheader. The first game will start at 5:00 Pm (4:00 Central)., and the second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game. Space Coast Stadium gates open at 5 a.m. -- that's right, 5 in the morning. Fans will be invited in to attempt to break the world record for first pitches thrown for a game. Last season, fans threw 5,906 first pitches on Sept. 2, breaking the previous record by "a couple hundred pitches," Rogers said. But the game was rained out, voiding the accomplishment.

Link while active, text follows: www.flatoday.com/apps/pbc...002/SPORTS Manatees pitcher recovers after foul-ball injury BY JIM CAWLEY FLORIDA TODAY A major scare turned into a feeling of relief after Brevard County Manatees pitcher David Welch was struck in the head with a foul ball during Saturday's Florida State League game against the St. Lucie Mets at Tradition Field. Welch, who was standing in the dugout, was struck in the forehead with a hard liner off the bat of a teammate in the second inning. Athletic trainers from both teams rushed to assist Welch, who was knocked unconscious. "It hit him so hard it knocked him completely out and he fell back in the dugout," said Manatees director of media relations Scott Pinner, who was doing radio play-by-play for the game. "The ball hit him so hard that after it hit him, the ball went straight up into the stands." Manatees GM Buck Rogers also witnessed the incident. "The ball lasered into the dugout," Rogers said. "It was lights out for a little while." According to Pinner, Welch faded in and out of consciousness at first. He then regained consciousness, was given an IV and taken to the hospital for a CAT scan. Pinner said Welch was in good spirits at the hospital and even jokingly asked if he could have a radio so he could listen to the rest of the game. The 23-year-old left-hander from Sydney, Australia, was released from the hospital Saturday night and was at Space Coast Stadium before Sunday's game against St. Lucie, which was rained out. Welch, who has a laceration on his forehead, was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Friday. Welch has appeared in three games for Brevard County this season, posting a 3.00 ERA. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder has three strikeouts and has not walked a batter.

  14. Final: Nashville 10, New Orleans (Mets) 3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Ryan Braun photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2264 Braun Homers Again, Sounds' Win Streak At Five METAIRIE, La. ? Ryan Braun and Vinny Rottino each homered for the second straight game and Zach Jackson worked six strong innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to their fifth straight victory, a 10-3 triumph over New Orleans on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field. Nashville (6-4), which posted a double-digit run total for the second straight day, has recovered from a 1-4 start to the year with its current five-game winning streak. Braun (2-for-3), who leads the Pacific Coast League with five home runs on the season, got things started for Nashville in the top of the first inning by swatting a one-out, two-run shot to right-center against Z?s starter Adam Bostick. The prospect has belted four roundtrippers in the last 24 hours after tying a Sounds single-game record with three on Saturday evening. AUDIO: Another Ryan Braun Homer -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...204-15.mp3 Neither team scored again until the sixth, when the Nashville offense exploded for five more runs to put the game out of reach. Joe Dillon started the rally by drawing a bases-loaded walk that greeted New Orleans reliever Ivan Maldonado. Mike Rivera added an RBI groundout and Rottino delivered a two-run single before Ozzie Chavez ended a season-opening 17 at-bat hitless drought with a two-out RBI double to up the Sounds? lead to 7-0. New Orleans got a run back in the bottom of the frame on a two-out Carlos Gomez double that extended the outfielder?s hitting streak to 11 games for the Z?s. The teams each plated a pair of runs in the seventh before Rottino (2-for-4, 3 RBIs) closed out the evening?s scoring in the top of the eighth by belting his second home run in as many days, a leadoff solo shot to center against Lino Urdaneta. It was Rottino?s third home run of the year and brought the score to its final 10-3. Chris Barnwell scored three runs for Nashville in the winning effort. Jackson (2-1) picked up his second consecutive win for Nashville after allowing one run on two hits over six innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out one. Bostick (1-1) took the loss after being touched for five runs in his 5 1/3 frames. Luther Hackman and Jose Capellan each tossed a scoreless frame of relief for the Sounds, running their season-opening scoreless inning totals to 4.0 and 6.1, respectively. The teams wrap up the four-game series with a 7 p.m. finale on Monday evening at Zephyr Field. Nashville sends right-hander R.A Dickey (0-1, 5.40) to the hill to face New Orleans right-hander Phillip Humber (1-1, 5.63). 15. Former Brewer farmhand Marco Scutaro now has seven walk-off hits, I believe -- heck, there are probably a couple of hall of famers with fewer.
  16. Our visiting "coach" is a legend in his own right, and I've had the pleasure of hearing him speak on occasion. It's always wonderful to have you visit with us, sir. Link for additional slideshow, audio -- www.nyc24.org/2006/newnew...index.html At George Washington High School, Beisbol is a Hit By Tripp Mickle, nyc24.org Fernando Frias is baseball crazy. The sophomore at George Washington High School spends close to 20 hours a week playing baseball games and practicing with the Trojans, then adds an additional five hours of specialized training with a private coach. So when the 6-foot-1-inch, 192-pound slugger walked off the diamond with a .700 batting average after a week long high school tournament in late April, it came as no surprise. Nor did it come as any surprise that George Washington won the tournament. Frias is just one of more than 25 equally dedicated and enthuasitic Dominican baseball players who have helped turn the high school baseball program into one of the best in the city. While coach Steve Mandl has guided the team?s rise, the Dominican ballplayers from Washington Heights and the Bronx have carried the team to prominence. ?They bring a talent and a passion for the game you don?t see anywhere else,? said Arnaldo Cubero, a citywide umpire, who?s been calling games for 25 years. ?They want to play more than anyone else.? The Dominican Republic accounts for the largest source of immigrants to New York City with more than 369,000 people arriving since 1990. That same influx can be seen in Major League Baseball, as the Dominican Republic supplies more players for the league than any other nation outside the U.S. For Dominican immigrants and their children who hope to play professional baseball, George Washington High has become the place to foster that dream. Since the mid-1980s, the school has produced two World Series winners in the Major Leagues: Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox and former Florida Marlins shortstop Alex Arias. Both Dominican, their success has given other young ballplayers hope. ?That?s the only reason I came here,? Juan Brito, a 17-year old junior said. ?Our coach is like a hall of famer. I knew I?d come out of here a good player.? All but two players on the George Washington team are Dominican. Many are the children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. Most believe baseball offers the best way to obtain a better life for themselves and their families. ?Baseball was what we were born to do,? said Chris Jones, a 17-year old junior and son of a Dominican. ?We just want to get drafted.? During the course of the spring break baseball tournament at George Washington, both the rise of Dominicans in New York and in baseball was on display. Schools like Walton, Norman Thomas and Kennedy high schools featured rosters filled with Spanish names ? more than 80 percent of which were Dominican. But none of those teams could rival George Washington?s appeal, history and dedication among Dominican ballplayers. ?In the Dominican tradition, if you play at George Washington, it?s like playing at Yankee Stadium,? said Youman Wilder, a private baseball instructor who works with players citywide. ?For some insane reason, it?s known in the Dominican Republic.? George Washington, a collegiate four-story brick building, sits on the crest of a small hill near the northeastern tip of Manhattan. The school technically encompasses four different ones: the High School for Media and Communications; the High School for International Business and Finance; the High School for Health Careers and Sciences; and the High School for Law and Public Service. Just below the school lies one of only two high school baseball fields on the island. While most of George Washington?s players come from the surrounding Washington Heights neighborhood, others travel from outlying boroughs. Angel Nunez, a senior second baseman on the team, comes to the school from Brooklyn in order to play baseball. Though he has left his home in Brooklyn for school before 6 a.m. many mornings, he has said it?s worth the trek to play ball at George Washington. Part of the reason players like Nunez and others travel so far is the school?s rich history. Not only has it produced players like Ramirez and Arias, it has also won more than 298 league games since coach Steve Mandl took over the program in 1983. Since 2001, the team has gone 77-4. The only other Public Schools Athletic League team to come close to that record is Staten Island?s Tottenville, which is 65-2. Mandl?s leadership has been central to the team?s success. Since taking over, he?s built an overall record of 696 wins and 92 losses. Opposing coaches, players and umpires admire him for his work ethic and his team?s discipline. Mandl arrives at school at 5:15 every morning to run a one-hour daily camp for junior high students. While the camp gives him a chance to evaluate young talent, he does it to give the players instruction, assistant coach Ronny de la Rosa said. His high school team warms itself up before games, forming an organized row for coordinated stretches and jumping jacks. ?He?s not a loud mouth coach,? said Arnaldo Cubero, an umpire, who?s been working city high school games for 25 years. ?He?s a the-way-it?s-supposed-to-be coach with signs and discipline.? For the Dominican ballplayers who form the backbone of the team, it?s hard to imagine playing for anyone else. ?It?s a big honor just to have George Washington on your shirts,? Rodriguez said, as he sat in the concrete stands above the field and watched as two other baseball teams played. ?It?s not just a name,? Brito added. ?It has meaning to it.? Coach Mandl gets it big time. He was a Jewish kid from Brooklyn who worshipped one of his own -- Sandy Koufax. "...when I was growing up he was my idol," says Mandl. "When you have some one from your family, your country, your background, you want him to do well."
  17. Hall is absolutely horrible. I don't blame Yost for benching him anymore if he keeps this up. That last ground ball was smoked up the middle, Eckstein made a great diving stop.
