Sunday's Games vs. the Mariners' organization: R.A. Dickey's knuckler sure hasn't been knuckling this spring; nice outing for Adam Pettyjohn; Vince Perkins 15 pitches in his inning (this was his second outing); lots of triples in Maryvale all spring, but ovrall, little offense to be found today; lefty David Welch with an uncharacteristically tough day... www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2217 Sounds To Broadcast Spring Training Games Nashville Sounds play-by-play announcer Chuck Valenches will broadcast a pair of Milwaukee Brewers spring training games locally on Sports Radio 560 AM during the final week of preseason action in Arizona. The first game on the slate is a matchup in Tucson, Ariz. between the Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, March 26. The tape-delayed contest will air on 560 AM at 6 p.m. The second spring tilt will feature a Brewers home game against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, March 27. The tape-delayed game will air on 560 AM at 7 p.m. Several former Sounds are currently participating in the Brewers? Major League spring training games, including first baseman Prince Fielder; second baseman Rickie Weeks; shortstop Ozzie Chavez; utilityman Vinny Rottino; outfielders Tony Gwynn, Jr., Corey Hart, and Laynce Nix; catcher Mike Rivera; and pitchers Jose Capellan, Zach Jackson, Mike Meyers, Corey Thurman, and Carlos Villanueva. The Sounds open the 2007 regular season on Thursday, April 5 at Greer Stadium, when the club heads into action in a 7 p.m. contest against the New Orleans Zephyrs. ***Pretty cool opportunity for Chuck, I wonder if this is what you'll hear on the webcast today. For those of you who have never followed a Link Report link to a Sounds' broadcast, Chuck has major league pipes and does a great job. The station does stream (and has a pic of some pretty girls on their home page), so if you'd like check out Chuck via the link below at 6:00 PM Central Monday and 7:00 Central Tuesday. www.wnsr.com/ -
If he's still on the player index, he's still in the organization. Thanks, Brian. Of all the weeks to say that, though, this is probably the week when it's the least true. Releases will come in pretty heavy later this week, and we may not know about them for a few days after. Also, there are three players on the Index today, but are not in the media guide, and haven't played a game thus far. We're trying to confirm their status before announcing anything on the board, hoping to be both accurate and considerate.

Not so much a hometown article, but from a columnist in the Long Beach area -- you'll see the connection below -- Link while active, text follows: www.dailybreeze.com/sport...=y&c=y Column: Pettyjohn still trying to prove he's not finished Former Long Beach Armada left-hander is impressing some in the Brewers organization as he continues his climb back from ulcerative colitis. By John Klima Torrance (CA) Daily Breeze Staff Writer MARYVALE, Ariz. -- Believe Adam Pettyjohn when he tells you that, two years ago, he asked himself this question a thousand times over. What on earth was a 27-year-old left-handed pitcher with major league experience, with no history of shoulder problems, doing in independent baseball? It's the land of the released and the home of the dregs, where young scouts take the competition level as an insult to their intelligence, and generally pay more attention to not spilling their tobacco dip cups all over themselves than they do finding a player who might one day return to the big leagues. There, Pettyjohn was stranded in the summer of 2005. He won 10 games in Long Beach, but as the season progressed, he became disenchanted. For the first time, he thought about giving up. He saw no one giving him a chance and scouts dismissing him, if they saw him at all. Times had been bad before, but in baseball, Long Beach was life at its worst. Three years after he was near death because of ulcerative colitis, his career had come to Independent ball, and he was looking at another kind of finish. Pettyjohn can smile about it now, which is a good thing, but for a pitcher whose ordeal in baseball is unique to him, it doesn't mean he's content. Arm problems can take a pitcher away from the mound, but losing a colon and 70 pounds of blood and flesh does more damage than rotator cuff surgery. It took at least two years for him to begin to regain his body strength. It's taken him longer to prove that he's not finished. Healing was the easy part. Finding a team who believes as strongly about his ability as he does has been the challenge. As affable a player as you'll find, beneath Pettyjohn's perspective is defiance. In the sometimes narrow-minded, impatient, 'we're-never-wrong' approach of professional baseball evaluation, Pettyjohn was systematically eliminated partly because of an illness that few understood and fewer took the time to ask him about. That, perhaps, bothered him more than anything. All a ballplayer can ever ask for is an honest explanation, but nowhere is it written that anyone has to give him one. He has refused to go away quietly and continues to fight his way back to the major leagues. He believes in the purpose of this journey. He wants anyone who has the condition he survived to know that it doesn't have to be a death sentence. Now 29 and signed to a triple-A contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, his third major league organization in two years, Pettyjohn refuses to accept that his year with Detroit in 2001 will be his last major league season. This journey, then, is about more than a baseball player trying to find a big league job. That would be too simplistic. "I missed two full years and it wasn't a performance thing," Pettyjohn said. "It was just a freakish thing. What I learned is that the first year back (in affiliated) baseball after Independent ball is the toughest. No one knows who you are, where you've been, or what you've gone through." What he went through, both personally and professionally, is part of who he is. That meant pushing back into a business that didn't care why he was throwing 78 instead of 86 mph in 2003 or why he was stuck in Long Beach in 2005. The ignorance frustrated him. A radar gun can't tell you everything. He caught a break when a bird dog recommended him to former Texas scouting director Lenny Strelitz, himself a former pitcher. Strelitz, an agent who co-founded West Coast Sports Management in Pasadena, took a chance. Strelitz helped smooth out Pettyjohn's delivery, showed him before-and-after video when they threw bullpen sessions together, and convinced the Seattle Mariners that Pettyjohn was worth a look. As it turned out, Pettyjohn was nothing more than a body. He pitched at double-A, and in the gusty Texas League, held left-handed hitters to a .218 average and had an overall 2.91 ERA. He thought he was in good standing, but the fun was just starting. Though he was performing well, he was released in June. Desperate, Pettyjohn agreed to pitch for a team in Taiwan. He was two hours away from leaving for the airport when Oakland called to offer him a triple-A contract on July 13. Pettyjohn pitched at Sacramento, where he posted a steady 3-2 record and 4.57 ERA in nine starts, but again, he proved he could shut down left-handed hitters, holding them to a .221 average in the Pacific Coast League, which is usually as friendly to pitchers as axe murderers are to the rest of us. Yet Oakland released him after the season and Milwaukee, which likes left-handers as much as the city likes beer, signed him and brought him to minor league camp. Here Pettyjohn believes he has seen encouraging signs from the coaching staff. Veteran pitcher R.A. Dickey, also with the club on a minor league contract, told Pettyjohn that he thinks he could stick in the big leagues for a decade as a reliever because his slider is so effective against left-handed hitters. His velocity is in the mid-to-upper 80s, exactly where it was when the baseball industry considered him a prospect. Age is against him, but his shoulder lacks the mileage of a typical 29-year-old. For a left-hander, it's not about the radar gun. It's about a breaking ball, movement and outs. The Brewers have a history of promoting left-handers who perform. Pettyjohn hopes he will finally find that elusive combination of right person, right place, and right time. His confidence is evident, and finally, his body is equal to his ambition. "I just want a solid, honest look and an opportunity to get back to the big leagues," he said. "I thought I had that with Seattle last year and the All-Star break came and it showed that I wasn't getting the look that I thought I was getting. "That was last year, this is this year. So to me, this is about proving myself. There's not a doubt in my mind that I can pitch in the big leagues again." Believe Pettyjohn when he tells you that this path is not complete. He trusts in the plan, and it's hard to tell him otherwise. He's already bounced back far more times than anyone with a rotator cuff scar on their shoulder blade has ever had to. Ask the question a thousand times. The answer is he is not finished yet.

From the Nashville site: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2224 Three candidates for a spot on the Sounds roster were released from minor-league camp by the Brewers: pitchers Benito Baez and Dave Bradley, and first baseman Mike Huggins. All three were new to the organization in 2007 after signing as minor-league free agents. So much for minor league game numbers, as Mike Huggins (26 years old) was 9-for-25 with (8!) extra-base-hits this spring. Benito Baez (29) threw three hitless innings in his only outing. That's got to be a tough pill to swallow, after training all off-season for a new opportunity. Dave Bradley was recently featured here in this "hometown article" thread: p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...3985.topic Huggins and Baez will be among those players who were Brewers in "name only", as they never appeared in a regular season game, so you won't see their names on historical sites like the Baseball Cube, etc.

Brewerfan Player Index pages now in place for the following young Latin prospects signed over the past year, but yet to debut in pro ball. You've seen these names in some of the box score lines we're posting this spring. 16-year-old Venezuelan outfielder Allixon Cequea will turn 17 in May. He's a switch-hitter, and yes, this does mean he was the first Brewer ever signed who was born in the 1990's. Yikes. RHP Yeison Cruz, 18, is out of the Dominican Republic. He was signed last August. RHP Pedro Lambertus, a 17-year-old 6'3" Dominican (18 in June) was signed last September. Catcher Jonathan Requena is from Venezuela, and turns 18 today (March 25th). RHP Adrian Rosario is a 17-year-old 6'4" Dominican. Luis Sanchez is a 17-year-old infielder from the Dominican. 6'5" RHP Juan Sepulveda is also out of the Dominican -- where are the southpaws http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ? Edgar Trejo is an infielder (with size -- 6'3", 194) out of Venezuela. Only 17, he'll be 18 in July.

First off, my apologies, as I realize this "Coaching Thread" carries over from the beginning of the 2006 season, which must be frustrating for newbies reading it from the beginning. We'll be sure to start a new thread after fall 2007 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . At the bottom of the linked page, you'll see a summary of all the Brewer staffs for 2007: milwaukee.brewers.mlb.com...p?c_id=mil Among those not discussed previously in this thread and new to the organization this year are Arizona Rookie Manager Rene Gonzales, 45, a long-time big league infielder: www.thebaseballcube.com/p...ales.shtml Also Arizona Rookie pitching coach Aris Tirado, 43, a long-time Rangers coach, who will assist fellow pitching coach Steve Kline, now in his 12th year with the Brewers, and former Brewer Angel Echevarria, 35, the A-Crew's new hitting coach.

You'll notice the name Dubose with a home run at the rookie league level Friday. That would be 2006 35th round draft pick, 3B Sanduan Dubose, who initially was announced as signed in Brewer press notes last season, then that was rescinded, and he did not appear in a pro game last year. Potential nice power source, here's the writeup from last June: p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...mp;stop=35 He's already 24 years old, so he'll have to show a lot quickly. Could be a nice story, and we're always looking for those...

Friday's Games vs. the Angels' organization (plus Helena/Arizona Rookie, which played a team of Canadian kids): Evidence here that these "rosters" are completely juggled on a daily basis, as AAA pitchers were shuffled to Huntsville for work to make room for the big league boys; pitching lines of note belong to RHP's Jesse Harper and Mike McClendon, LHP Mike Ramlow (again), and Rookie League RHP's Jeremy Jeffress and Evan Anundsen; offensively, look to the West Virginia lines, where Michael Brantley (five hits), Chuckie Caufield (four) and Eric Newton (three) rocked the house. We will do everything we can, as we do each year, to be one of your first online sources with final rosters for each of the four full-season affiliates (Sounds, Stars, Manatees, Power). Those threads will begin as "Your 2007 ________" for each squad, and we'll follow-up with any non-game story player articles in those threads. That being said, there are just too many candidates for jobs above A-ball, and only so many slots in Huntsville and Nashville. As in past years, there will be some releases made at the end of spring camp next week, and it'd be a bit unfair to speculate on those right now. Some names are already set in stone for Nashville (Closser, Gwynn, Anderson, Sarfate), but a whole bunch more aren't so iron clad, obviously. Patience, patience, keep an eye on things here, but certainly discuss further in this thread if you wish.

From the Journal-Sentinel: Club officials, including Melvin, took time in the afternoon to watch Brewers rookie-ball players take on a touring amateur team from Canada. The attraction was right-hander Jeremy Jeffress, the Brewers' first-round pick in the 2006 June draft. Jeffress, who throws his fastball regularly in the high-90-mph range, struck out five in two innings.

Link for photos while active, text follows: www.tennessean.com/apps/p.../703220393 Sounds' future on the line Hangup on ballpark raises odds of team moving to another city By BRYAN MULLEN and MICHAEL CASS Tennessean Staff Writers If they don't build it, pro baseball in Nashville could be done. That's the reality if plans for a new downtown ballpark fall through. The Nashville Sounds are attempting to finalize financial arrangements and other groundwork for construction to begin, but the controversial and slow-moving project has left many wondering if it's ever going to happen. Count the Milwaukee Brewers as one of the concerned parties. The Sounds are the Triple-A affiliate of the Brewers. If the project falls through, the Brewers said they would consider looking for another affiliate. "Obviously, we're extremely disappointed that this hasn't been going as smoothly as we like," said Scott Martens, the Brewers' business manager for player development and minor league operations. "Last July we made the commitment to the Sounds and to Nashville to re-up for four years with the understanding that we would be in the new ballpark in 2008." The Brewers bit their lips when it was announced that the opening would be pushed back to April 2009. "Should it come out that it's not going to happen in 2009, absolutely we'd have to look at other options and see what can and what can't be done," Martens said. Sounds General Manager Glenn Yaeger said it was possible Nashville could lose the Sounds, but that the organization was determined to remain in Nashville. "If we continue to get major pushback, then obviously our first requirement and responsibility is to Major League Baseball and our affiliate," he said. The Sounds and Brewers agreed to a two-year deal in the fall of 2004. Last July, the Sounds extended the Player Development Contract with the Brewers for four years. The current contract runs through the 2010 season, but the Brewers could break the agreement if a new ballpark isn't constructed or massive improvements aren't made to Greer Stadium, the current home of the Sounds. Team has other options Yaeger was quick to point out that there are several other options to explore before the Sounds would consider moving to another city. The Sounds would first look to renovate Greer Stadium, which opened in 1978 and is considered a dinosaur among Triple-A parks. The second option would be to try to find another Middle Tennessee site to build on. Lastly, the Sounds would attempt to revisit the downtown site with a new development plan. During original negotiations with the Brewers, the Sounds publicly said a new stadium was necessary for the team to stay in Nashville long-term. When asked if that is still true, Yaeger said, "If we can't save the deal at the Thermal site, we've got to take immediate action to make sure we don't lose the team." Significant improvements would have to be made to Greer if the downtown ballpark falls through. Part of the work would be to bring the ballpark up to standards required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, at a cost of $10 million that Metro would be responsible for. At yesterday's meeting between the Sounds and Metro's Budget & Finance Committee, Metro Council member at large David Briley said that if the Sounds can't get a deal completed for the new ballpark, the team shouldn't plan on asking Metro for money to improve Greer. Potential sites abound If the Sounds exhaust all possibilities in Middle Tennessee, there is a burgeoning marketplace for Triple-A teams. Jacksonville, Fla., Orlando, Fla., Reno, Nev., and more than one California city have expressed interest in bringing in Triple-A organizations. "Jacksonville had Triple-A baseball in the 1960s, and people all the time ask me if we'll ever get Triple-A baseball again," said Peter Bragan Jr., president of the Double-A Jacksonville Suns. "I think it would be neat." Multiple cities have laid groundwork to make the Triple-A transition seamless. New Double-A and Single-A ballparks have been built in recent years, and most seat more than 11,000 fans, the minimum requirement for a Triple-A team. Jacksonville, for example, spent $26 million for its ballpark, which opened in 2003. Bragan originally wanted 8,000 seats, but city officials had 11,000 seats installed. "There seems to be an increasing appetite for quality minor-league sports across the country," said Don Hinchey, vice president of communications for The Bonham Group, a sports marketing firm in Denver, Colo. "It's very affordable entertainment for the entire family and it does provide a sense of civic pride. It's a nice amenity to have."

From our friends in Nashville: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2219 Jose Macias Signed To Minor-League Contract The Milwaukee Brewers signed veteran utility player Jose Macias to a minor-league contract on Wednesday, two days after the 35-year-old switch-hitter was released by the Washington Nationals. Macias, whose versatility allows him to play third base, second base, and all three outfield spots, is expected to open the 2007 season as a member of the Sounds roster. Invited to Nationals spring training as a non-roster player this year after spending the 2006 campaign in Japan, Macias batted .167 (3-for-18) with one RBI in 10 Grapefruit League games for the Nats before being reassigned to minor-league camp and ultimately released. The Panama native spent the 2006 season in Japan, where he batted .229 (52-for-227) with three homers and 21 RBIs in 73 games for the Nippon Ham Fighters. Macias spent the entire 2001 through 2005 seasons in the Majors with the Tigers, Expos, and Cubs, and last appeared in the minors in 2000 with Toledo (AAA-Tigers). The 15-year veteran carries a career .270 average in 720 minor league games and a .256 mark in 659 major league contests.
