  1. Final: Huntsville 12, Birmingham (White Sox) 4 No worries -- Acuna-Ma-Tata! Been waiting a while to use that one... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=862 Acuna Asserts HImself in Stars Win Ron Acuna knocked in six runs, as Huntsville continued its assault on Birmingham pitching by pounding out 16 hits in a 12-4 win Sunday afternoon at the Hoover Met. The Stars matched their season-high with a third straight road win to improve to 23-33 overall and 14-14 away from home, while the Barons slumped to 24-34 overall and 10-18 at home. The Stars have totaled 30 runs in the series after scoring 30 runs during a 13-game losing streak that was suspended before the start of the five-game set. The Stars jumped on Barons? starter Tyler Lumsden for four two-out runs in the first inning on run-scoring singles by Brad Nelson and J.C. Boscan and a two-run triple by Acuna. Lumsden had blanked the Stars on five hits over five innings and allowed only one runner to reach second base at Joe Davis Stadium on April 13. Adam Heether singled in a run in the second inning and Acuna drove in a run with a two-out single in the fourth to push the Stars lead to 6-1. Lumsden was lifted after four frames and suffered his second loss of the season, and first since May 9. The southpaw allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits and a pair of walks. He has been tagged for 14 runs on 20 hits over eight innings in his last two starts. Birmingham scored in the fifth on a two-out single by Micah Schnurstein that cut the lead to 6-2. Stars? starter Travis Phelps was taken out after five innings during which he gave up two runs on seven hits and five walks. The veteran right-hander struck out a season-high five and earned his first win with the Stars. Drew Anderson and Heether walked to open the sixth inning against Brian West, advanced a base on a Nelson fly out and scored on a single by Acuna, who collected three hits for a second time this season. Rusty Tucker took over in the seventh inning and allowed four runs on a two-run double by Anderson, the only hit of the frame, and bases loaded walks to Acuna and Lou Palmisano. Tucker has appeared twice in the series, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on six hits and eight walks, including six on Sunday. Matt Smith tossed scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth innings and was one out away from a third shutout inning when Ricardo Nanita hit a two-run home run, his fifth of the season. The former Barons reliever earned his first save with the Stars and helped preserve the visitors second eight-run win of the series and third of the season. The series continues Monday night with Stars right-hander Carlos Villanueva to the mound against Barons? southpaw Corwin Malone. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Huntsville Box Score: Five Stars reached base four times each, and another three times -- wow! 2. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Current Stars are not the franchise's worst statistically By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com When The Streak began to expand out of proportion, like some horror-movie creature growing larger and more grotesque with each passing moment, one of the Huntsville Stars players offered an anonymous assessment. "What's wrong with us?'' he asked rhetorically. "We stink." It was August 1987. Auburn was embroiled in a controversy over the return of starting quarterback Jeff Burger. Alabama's new coach, Bill Curry, was gleefully proclaiming, "I've been treated very well by the Alabama people in my travels around the state." And the Huntsville Stars were in the midst of an unprecedented nine-game losing streak. They tried everything to kill The Streak, from wearing road jerseys for a home game to a team postgame party where, by gosh, maybe they could at least drown The Streak in cheap beer. It was the worst stretch of losing for a franchise in only its third season of existence. It would be the first of four times a Huntsville Stars team would lose nine in a row, a record obliterated by this year's club, which ended a 13-game skid Friday night, two short of the Southern League record. Worst ever? Certainly to continue on the same pace - 21-33 through its first 54 games - this year's Stars would post the worst record in franchise history. But is this really the worst Huntsville team ever? No. Aside from subjective analyses, there is statistical evidence to support that. None of the current starters has an ERA higher that 4.05. Corey Thurman and Jeff Housman are in the top 10 in ERA. The defense has committed fewer than an error per game. A year ago, the Stars made 161 errors in 139 games. The '91 team made 213 errors on the way to 83 losses. It's been a simple matter that "we can't hit nothing,'' according to manager Don Money. The Stars are full of young players struggling to make adjustments. Four regulars - Drew Anderson, Jeff Eure, Steve Moss and Lou Palmisano are in their first Double-A season; shortstop Ozzie Chavez and third baseman Adam Heether had only 99 Double-A games between them before '06. They are clearly pressing at the plate, often overanalyzing or losing confidence in the abilities that got them this far. As Milwaukee roving hitting instructor Jim Skaalen put it last week, his job wasn't to repair swings but "to massage some bruised egos." The worst Stars team? Perhaps the 1988 club that went 59-85, the low-water mark, coming after three consecutive playoff appearances. Perhaps the 1991 club that was 61-83, a bunch most comparable to this year's inexperienced lineup, with a team batting average of .231. The nucleus returned in '92 and went to the playoffs. Perhaps the 1999 club, at least in the second half. The first year of the Milwaukee affiliation began nicely, tying West Tenn for the first-half title at 38-32. But the Stars went in the tank, going 26-44 and losing 19 of their last 26. Perhaps it was the 1996 team, which had identical 33-37 records in each half and left manager Dick Scott at season's end sighing, "I'm happy this season's over with.'' Streak-snapping Even before anybody knew to call it a "walk-off homer," Steve Cox hit one. Bottom of the ninth, July 28, 1996, a Sunday night against the Memphis Chicks. Cox, the Huntsville first baseman, hit a two-run shot to end a nine-run skid. "The clubhouse is a lot happier right now,'' Cox said. "It's been bad around here for about a week and a half." The 1995 Stars also had a nine-game losing streak. They would suffer only the third losing season in 11 years. (Barring a dramatic turnaround this year, there will be six losing seasons in the 11 years since.) At one point, first baseman Joel Wolff described his team as "a bunch of big, fat, toothless old women." The ninth loss would take place in front of a season-high 10,452, drawn to Joe W. Davis Stadium by The Chicken, but the following evening, Tony Batista cranked a two-run homer to help beat Birmingham and end the misery. The 1987 Stars seemed the least likely losers, coming off successive championships (the league title in '85, a division crown in '86). They were on a nine-game winning streak in late July, including a sweep at Greenville and a series-opener at Charlotte, and were leading the division. Then the Orioles pitching stymied them three in a row. Greenville came to Huntsville and won four straight; David Justice had a two-run double in the ninth to win one of them. They went to Chattanooga and sandwiched a pair of losses around the team party. Back home on Aug. 7, Pat Dietrick, an outfielder with a then-stylish mullet cut, homered in the second inning, his first of the season. It triggered a landslide. The Stars beat 11-1 Chattanooga as Dave Otto pitched a four-hit complete game. Afterward, manager Brad Fischer was relieved, but still a bit weary. "I've had enough of streaks,'' Fischer said. A sentiment to be shared by many of his successors.

  4. Final: West Virginia 7, Lake County (Indians) 3 Fantastic streak not only without their top pitcher, Will Inman, but arguably their team leader and one of their top position players, Kenny Holmberg... West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SWEEP THE CAPTAINS The West Virginia Power extended their winning streak to seven games, taking a clean sweep in a four-game series against the Lake County Captains with a 7-3 victory at Classic Park on Sunday afternoon. The Captains took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on Matt Fornasiere?s RBI single. The Power tied the game in the top of the second when Nate Yoho reached on a fielder?s choice and knocked in Tony Festa. In the third inning the Captains took their second lead of the game on back to back RBI singles from Nick Petrucci and Fernando Pacheco. The Power scored the final six runs of the game. In the fifth inning they tied it up on an RBI groundout from Lorenzo Cain and a two-out RBI single from Festa. Darren Ford gave the Power the lead on a run-scoring single in the sixth inning. Scotty McKnight, Ford and Cain provided the insurance runs for the Power on back-to-back to back RBI base hits in the eighth inning. Derek Miller (6-1) started and went five innings to earn the victory, Ryan Marion pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to get the save (1), and Cody Bunkleman (1-2) obtained the loss. The Power are 31-23 after the win and the Captains fell to 24-32 with the loss. The Power will begin a four-game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. Hagerstown will start right hander Jason Meyers (1-5, 7.57) and the Power will counter with right hander Matt Kretzschmar (0-2, 8.20). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: Nice bullpen-saving outing for Ryan Marion, whose spot on the team looked tenuous at best a couple of weeks ago; hardly Derek Miller's finest outing, but he managed -- Lake County stranded 15 in all... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lcoafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lcoafx_1

Brevard fell to 1.5 games back of St. Lucie today, a team they do not play before the All-Star Break.

  7. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Tim Dillard photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=861 Timely Hitting, Good Pitching Carry Stars Drew Anderson knocked in four runs to back the solid pitching of Tim Dillard, as Huntsville downed Birmingham 7-3 Saturday night in the second game of a five-game set at the Hoover Met. The Stars have won the first two games of the set, claimed victory in consecutive games for the first time since May 13-14 at Tennessee and improved to 22-33, while the Barons dropped to 24-33 overall and 10-17 at home. Cory Aldridge delivered a two-out, run-scoring single that plated Chris Getz, who had walked, and Corey Smith scored on a fielding error by third baseman Adam Heether on a Micah Schnurstein ground ball to give the home side a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Jeff Eure doubled in a run in the second inning to slice the lead to 2-1 but the Stars could not score with runners at second and third and nobody out, as Ozzie Chavez flied out, Steve Moss bounced into a fielder?s choice on which Heether was cut down at the plate and Anderson flied out with the bases loaded to end the threat. Barons? starter Lance Broadway hit Eure to open the fourth inning, Chavez dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Moss reached on a fielding error by Schnurstein with Eure staying at second and Callix Crabbe walked to load the bases. Anderson came through with the sacks full in his second chance when he laced a triple to the alley in right-center field to chase home all three runners to give the visitors the lead for good at 4-2. Brad Nelson brought Anderson home with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-2 and cap the Stars second four-run frame against Broadway in two games. Eure opened the fifth inning with a double and Chavez dropped down his second sacrifice bunt of the night that was fielded by the catcher Gustavo Molina, who left the home plate area vacant. Eure realized that, dashed to the plate ahead of the return throw by first baseman Corey Smith that could not be handled by Molina and scored to make it 6-2. Anderson drove in the final run with a fielder?s choice grounder in the seventh. Dillard retired 16 of 19 batters after the Heether error through the sixth inning and yielded one run in the seventh on a passed ball by Lou Palmisano. He left after 6 2/3 innings and picked up his first win since April 17 at Montgomery. Dillard allowed six hits, fanned a season-high seven and has earned all three of his wins on the road. Matt Yeatman got the final out in the seventh and Brett Evert tossed two scoreless frames to close out the victory. The series continues Sunday afternoon with Stars right-hander Travis Phelps to the mound against Barons? southpaw Tyler Lumsden. Coverage of the game begins at 1:50 p.m. central time and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1450 AM locally and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. 13. Final: Brevard County 3, Lakeland (Tigers) 2 Brevard County Site Game Notes: Gallardo Guns Down Visiting Tigers Jenny Rennie, Director of Media On a night that fireworks lit up the skies above Space Coast Stadium, starter Yovani Gallardo displayed his own show by lighting up twelve visiting Lakeland Tigers. With tonight's outing, Gallardo's strikeout total for the season leads the league at 89. Gallardo threw seven strong innings allowing the Tigers just four hits and one run. Bo Hall threw 1.2 innings of relief and picked up the win with Jeremy Lewis earning his third save of the season. The Manatees edged out the Tigers 3-2 with nine hits and no errors. Lakeland's Jeff Hahn was given the loss Saturday due to a Ryan Braun home run in the seventh inning followed by Steve Sollmann's single that scored Charlie Fermaint in the eighth. Alcides Escobar, Fermaint and Braun all went 2-4 at the plate Saturday night. The Manatees have won four-in-a-row and are 30-24 for the first half of the season. Brevard County has taken the first three games of the four-game series and look for the sweep on Sunday. First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 4:00 PM (3:00 Central) and because it is McDonald's Family Sunday, fans can get five tickets for five dollars. Brevard County Box Score: C.J. 15. Final: Nashville 8, Albuquerque (Marlins) 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Ben Hendrickson in the powder blue throwback, link follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1984 Rivera, Sounds Slam Isotopes In Series Opener NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Catcher Mike Rivera belted a grand slam to highlight the Nashville Sounds? 8-4 victory over the PCL-leading Albuquerque Isotopes in front of a packed house of 10,123 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium. Nashville (32-24) increased its winning streak to four games, one short of its longest this season, and has won five of its last six games overall to pull within a half-game of the Isotopes (33-24) for the best record in the Pacific Coast League. Seven of the eight Sounds starting position players scored a run in the game and all but Dave Krynzel (0-for-3) recorded a hit. The Sounds wore retro 1980's Milwaukee Brewers jerseys, which were auctioned off during the game with proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald House of Nashville. The visitors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third against Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson. With two down in the inning, Chris Aguila (3-for-4) ripped a two-run standup triple to right-center. Paul Hoover and Roberto Andino scored on the three-bagger. Former Sound Jason Wood followed with an RBI double just inside the third base bag to bring in Aguila. Albuquerque starter Renyel Pinto was dealing early and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over the first three innings before being removed due to a pitch count. The southpaw threw 70 pitches, 40 for strikes, in the contest. Nashville took quick advantage of Pinto?s departure and grabbed a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a seven-run rally as the Sounds batted around against Isotopes reliever Jimmy Anderson. Shortstop Chris Barnwell put the Sounds on the board with an RBI single up the middle that plated Vinny Rottino. Zach Sorensen pulled the home team within a run later in the frame, making it a 3-2 contest with a sacrifice fly, before Nelson Cruz singled to center to plate Barnwell and knot the score. Rivera put the Sounds up four when he belted a 3-2 Anderson offering over both walls in left-center for a grand slam, his eighth longball and Nashville?s second bases-loaded tater of the season. Only one of the seven runs scored in the inning against Anderson was earned, however, as a result of the pitcher?s own throwing error. AUDIO: Mike Rivera's Grand Slam -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%206-3.wma The Sounds increased the lead to 8-3 in the fifth against Anderson on Sorensen?s one-out bases-loaded RBI single but missed a chance to do further damage as Cruz bounced into an inning-ending double play with the sacks full. Albuquerque wrapped up the night?s scoring with a two-out run off Sounds reliever Alec Zumwalt in the ninth. James Shanks? RBI single through the left side of the infield brought in Hoover to bring the score to its final 8-4. Hendrickson (3-1) earned the victory while pitching on three days? rest for Nashville. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six batters in five innings. Anderson (2-3), who played in Nashville from 1998-2000, took the loss after surrendering eight runs (two earned) on eight hits in his three innings of work. Chris Demaria tossed three scoreless frames behind Hendrickson and has allowed only one run in his 7.0 innings of work since rejoining the Sounds a week ago. The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening at Greer. Right-hander Dennis Sarfate (3-2, 3.13) will make the start for Nashville on three days? rest. The Isotopes will counter with right-hander Nic Ungs (6-4, 3.00). 17. Via the Lake County audio, it was clear that Angel Salome behind the plate and thus the Power bench weren't pleased with the ball and strike calls today for West Virginia pitchers. It was a big surprise Salome didn't get booted, as even upon the game ending (on a strikeout), Salome chose to jaw with the umpire instead of enjoying the victory. The Captains' play-by-play men, who had praised Salome throughout the broadcast, thought it was a real weak move on Angel's part, and I would certainly agree.
  18. At Brevard County, 24-year-old Dominican product Carlos de la Cruz, who has seen limited action at just about every infield spot, lands on the disabled list for the second time this season with an undisclosed injury. Hernan Iribarren's suspension that was issued by the Florida State League officially has ended, although he's not in the lineup tonight, and according to what we read earlier, we shouldn't expect to see him in action until mid-week.
  19. West Virginia Site Game Summary: Power win sixth in a row The West Virginia Power held off another late rally from the Lake County Captains on Saturday afternoon at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio to win their sixth game in a row, beating the Captains 7-6. For the second game in a row the Captains scored first in the second inning on a solo homer un from Josh Noviskey. In the top of the third the Power tied it up at 1-1 on Darren Ford?s run-scoring double. The Captains took a 3-1 lead in the home half of the third inning. Matt Fornasiere grounded into a double play but brought in the go-ahead run and John Drennen smacked an RBI single to complete the two-run frame. The lead held until the Power offense scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning on an RBI double from Tony Festa and a two-run homer from Ryan Crew, his second of the year. The Power added to the lead in the eighth inning on Mat Gamel?s two-run triple, and Gamel scored later in the inning on Mike Bell?s sacrifice fly. Down 7-3 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Captains began their attempt at a comeback. Drennen hit a solo home run and Nuiman Romero walked with the bases loaded to make it a two-run game. In the ninth inning, with a runner on first base and two outs, Noviskey doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Omar Casillas reached on an infield single to score Nick Petrucci and moved the tying run to third base. With runners at the corners and two outs, Joe Thatcher struck out Fernando Pacheco to end the game. Patrick Ryan (1-1) pitched four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win, Thatcher (8) earned the save and Michael Finocchi (4-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 30-23 after the win and the Captains fell to 24-31 with the loss. The Power will finish the four game series against the Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio on Sunday afternoon. Lake County will start right hander Frank Herrmann (1-2, 5.67) and the Power will counter with left hander Derek Miller (5-1, 2.73). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM (1:05 Central).
