Huntsville Site: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...newsId=820 Stars Pitching Staff Loses Two, Gains One Huntsville, AL - The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that pitchers Alec Zumwalt and Corey Thurman have been promoted from Huntsville to triple-A Nashville. They will join the Sounds in Tucson, AZ. The Brewers have also announced that pitcher Joe Winkelsas will be sent back to Huntsville from Nashville. Zumwalt, who finished the 2005 season in Nashville, worked in 10 games in relief for the Stars this season, compiling a 1-0 record with five saves in five chances. The right-hander had a 2.93 earned run average and struck out 14 in 15 1/3 innings. Thurman went 1-4 with a 2.56 earned run average in seven starts. He suffered the loss in Tuesday's 3-0 win by Montgomery after giving up three runs on eight hits over six innings. The veteran right-hander allowed only one earned run, on an Elliot Johnson home run, in his first four starts. He lasted six innings in four turns and suffered from a lack of support, as the Stars managed to score only 12 runs in his seven outings. Winkelsas was promoted after last Friday's game and pitched in one game for the Sounds, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits and striking out six on Saturday. He is 1-1 with three saves and a 2.13 earned run mark with Huntsville. The Stars and Montgomery were rained out Wednesday afternoon and will play a twin bill Thursday morning starting at 10:05 a.m. For more information about the Stars, visit the team's web site at www.huntsvillestars.com. ***There simply must be more moves forthcoming, as these leave the Stars with only nine pitchers, and down two roster spots -- Mass Haas

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Education ongoing for Palmisano Stars' prized catcher learning lessons both on and off field By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff, markcolumn@aol.com Lou Palmisano was painstakingly taping a small, brief message onto a board in the Stars clubhouse. "What Would Chuck Norris Do?'' it read. It's part of the inside joke du jour, based on a flurry of silly Internet humor about the martial arts tough guy. As in "If Chuck Norris jumped in water, he wouldn't get wet. The water would get Chuck Norrised." Baseball humor has never claimed to be sophisticated. Just has to be contagious. Moments later, Palmisano unlocked his massive white tough-as-Chuck-Norris Hummer H2, sitting in the stadium concourse with other teammates' cars. He was going to go for a sit with a reporter. The H2 - "you can run over anything in this," he exclaimed - is loaded. All the space-age gizmos. Cool wheels. Navigation system. And, in the back seat, the latest copy of FHM magazine, where his girlfriend Katherine Akra is photographed with some fellow Miami Heat dancers. Not a bad life for the Huntsville Stars' 24-year-old catcher from Utica, N.Y., by way of Ft. Lauderdale, who is batting .250, but is second on the club in on-base percentage and has two homers and 10 RBIs after 23 starts. Palmisano was a third-round draft pick in 2003 and considered the Brewers' top catching prospect. That's put him under a microscope, especially "playing a premium position,'' said Stars manager Don Money. He can't escape the attention, even inside his family. "My mom (Denise) is a big Internet stat-rat," he said. "She sends me stuff all the time. I open up something, I don't know if it's an article about me or a letter from my mom.'' There was plenty to buzz about in his first year of pro ball. Palmisano batted .391 and was named MVP of the short-season Pioneer League with 43 RBIs in 47 games. "I was truly blessed to have a year like that," he said. "But that's not going to happen every year.'' The numbers shrunk in '04 at Single-A to .293, 65 RBIs in 113 games, then again to .255 last year, the pitching getting better the higher the climb. "Last year,'' he said, "was definitely the worst year as far as numbers, but I probably learned the most.'' The main lesson: "You don't hit to catch, you catch to (be able to) hit.'' "He's much better as a catcher,'' said Money, who was his manager in 2004 when Palmisano learned other lessons, more painfully. "He's grown up a lot (since then),'' Money said. "He was one of those guys who always pushed the rules.'' "I was a bit of a party animal," Palmisano admitted. "That can get you in trouble. One night in particular.'' Late in the season, Palmisano and three teammates were out well past curfew, walking down a street in Peoria, Ill., after leaving a club. They were accosted. Pitcher Greg Kloosterman was stabbed, but not seriously wounded. "It was a wake-up call,'' said Palmisano. "You know how easy someone's life can be taken away. Some guys starts a fight, pulls out a knife - thank God the guy that got stabbed didn't die.'' Maybe Chuck Norris would have fought - and won. But in the real world, where life follows baseball in that "there are no guarantees in this game," a scary early morning in Illinois reminded Palmisano "it's all about putting yourself in better situations.'' Maybe that's behind the wheel of an H2 - or maybe by learning how to get his hands firmly wrapped around the wheel steering his career. ***Had to take the bait http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif -- with all due respect, Cap'n Lou or Sweet Lou or whatever... Biscuits blank Stars 3-0 Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times It took Montgomery nearly two years to beat the Stars in Huntsville. Now it's taken only two nights to do it twice. The Biscuits, leading the Southern League South, knocked off the Stars 3-0 Tuesday night in a game delayed 89 minutes by rain. It was a testament to the grounds crew and the stadium drainage system that the game could even be played after the torrential early evening rain. Before Monday, Montgomery's last victory here had come on Aug 12, 2004; it is now 4-14 at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars have scored only one run in their last 23 innings against Montgomery, this time falling to veteran Jim Magrane, who combined with two relievers to three-hit Huntsville. Corey Thurman, who came into the game No. 4 in the league in ERA, suffered his fourth hard-luck loss against one win. The Stars have now scored two runs or fewer in six of his seven starts. Doubles were his downfall Tuesday - a leadoff double in the first by Elliot Johnson, who scored on a Jason Pridie single, a two-our RBI double in the second by Jeremy Owens and a leadoff double in the sixth by Michael Coleman, driven home by Gabriel Martinez. The Stars and Biscuits, sure to be a tad weary, will play today at 12:05 in a Businessperson's Special, with Matt Yeatman (1-0, 1.33) pitching for Huntsville against Montgomery's Mike Prochaska. Four years ago, pitching at Beloit for Stars manager Don Money, Yeatman rolled up brilliant numbers - 11-7, 2.45 ERA and a strikeout for each of his 127 innings. That off-season he was traded to the Minnesota organization. This spring, though, the Brewers jumped at the chance to "bring him back home,'' so to speak. He's demonstrated why. Yeatman, a 23-year-old righthander pressed into the starting rotation after an injury to Jeff Housman, is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.33 for the season. He allowed only three hits and struck out six in four innings of his first start, part of a four-hit shutout, and got no decision in his next start, in which a string of 15 1/3 scoreless innings was ended. On Thursday, the Stars and Biscuits will play a 10:05 "School Day" game to close the series. Khalid Ballouli will go against Chris Flinn. -

Final: Tuscon (Diamondbacks) 4, Nashville 3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1941 Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener In Tucson, 4-3 TUCSON, Ariz. ? The Nashville Sounds dropped their third straight game on Tuesday evening, falling 4-3 to the host Tucson Sidewinders in the opener of a four-game series at Tucson Electric Park. The Sounds were held to a season-low four hits by a pair of Sidewinders hurlers in the loss. The defeat was the seventh in a row in Tucson for Nashville (20-12), which has matched its largest losing streak of the season with its current skid. Nashville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally against Sidewinders starter Enrique Gonzalez. With two down, Corey Hart doubled and scored one batter later on Nelson Cruz?s RBI single. Cruz, who finished 2-for-3 in the contest to account for half of the Sounds? hit total on the night, ripped his PCL-leading 12th double of the season in the third inning. The Sidewinders took a 2-1 lead with a pair of two-out unearned runs in the bottom of the third stemming from Vinny Rottino?s second error of the game at third base coupled with a throwing error by left fielder Dave Krynzel. Sounds starter Dana Eveland (3-1) took a hard-luck first loss of the season after turning in another solid outing. The southpaw allowed two unearned runs on five hits over five innings of work to lower his PCL-leading ERA to 0.75 on the year. Eveland was pulled from the game early after throwing only 70 pitches and is a candidate to be recalled by Milwaukee on Wednesday to replace the injured Ben Sheets in the Brewers? starting rotation. Chris Barnwell extended his season-best hitting streak to 12 games with a double in the top of the fifth inning. The Nashville shortstop also upped his consecutive games on base streak to a team-best 24 with the two-bagger. AUDIO: Barnwell Extends Hitting Streak -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%205-9.wma Tucson tacked on two important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of Chris Carter?s third home run of the year, a two-run shot to right off Nashville reliever Allan Simpson. Carlos Quentin, who preceded Carter to the plate and was hit by a pitch, scored on the roundtripper. The Sounds rallied in the ninth, plating a pair of unearned runs when Tucson left fielder Kenny Perez misplayed a Krynzel fly ball to reduce the home club?s lead to 4-3. Cruz and Rottino, who had each drawn walks from Randy Choate earlier in the frame, scored on the play. Choate recovered to retire Barnwell for the final out of the contest with the potential tying run standing on second. Nashville now stands at 0-5 in one-run decisions on the road this season. Gonzalez (3-3) struck out five and held the Sounds to one run on four hits over his 7 1/3 frames to earn the victory and square his record on the year. Choate recorded his third save of the season after registering the final five outs. Nashville looks to get back into the win column when the teams continue the series on Wednesday night. Sounds right-hander Dennis Sarfate (1-0, 3.20) makes the start against Tucson right-hander Edgar Gonzalez (1-3, 3.96) in the clubs? 8:30 p.m. CT meeting. Final: Montgomery (Devil Rays) 3, Huntsville 0 Wow, is this offense inept right now... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, then text -- Huntsville's Struggles at Home Continue Jim Magrane, Jean Machi and Jeff Ridgway combined on a three-hit shutout and made early runs stand up in Montgomery?s 3-0 blanking of Huntsville Tuesday night in a game delayed by an hour and a half at the outset because of rain. The Biscuits have taken the last two games of the five-game set to improve to 20-13, square the season series at four games apiece and maintain a one game lead over Jacksonville in the South Division, while the Stars dropped to 17-16 and fell six games behind victorious, front-running Chattanooga in the Southern League North Division. Elliot Johnson started the game with a double off the glove of a diving center fielder Steve Moss, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Maniscalco and scored on a base hit by Jason Pridie, who knocked in his eighth run of the year. Johnson has scored in the first inning of each of the two games Corey Thurman has started against the Biscuits. Anuedi Cuevas singled with two outs in the second inning and scored when Jeremy Owens followed with a double to left field. Michael Coleman doubled with one out in the sixth and scored when Gabriel Martinez followed with a single to center field to collect just his third hit in 25 at-bats against Stars? pitching this season. Thurman left after six innings and suffered his fourth defeat of the season and third in as many starts after allowing eight hits and striking out a season-high six. Huntsville has scored only 12 runs in his seven starts, with six coming in his lone win over Mobile at home on April 23. Magrane allowed a two-out single in the first to Drew Anderson and did not give up another hit until Kennard Bibbs singled with one out in the sixth. Ozzie Chavez doubled to left but Bibbs was thrown out at the plate trying to score by left fielder Francisco Leandro. Magrane lasted six innings and has now thrown 11 straight scoreless frames against the Stars after allowing a first inning run on April 18. He notched his league-best fifth win by yielding three hits, striking out five and walking two. Jean Machi worked two scoreless frames and Jeff Ridgway retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season. Huntsville was shut out for a fifth time at home and fell to 9-9 at the friendly confines of ?the Joe.? The Stars have totaled only 46 hits in their last eight games and have scored one run over the last 22 innings. The series continues Wednesday afternoon with right-hander Matt Yeatman taking the mound against Montgomery southpaw Mike Prochaska. Coverage of the game begins at 11:50 a.m. central time and can be heard locally on ESPN Radio 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. West Virginia Site Game Summary: Power split series with Hickory After allowing eleven runs to the Hickory Crawdads in the first game of the series on Monday night, the West Virginia Power held Hickory in check on Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Crawdads in ten innings at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina. The Crawdads scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Cameron Blair. The Power tied the game on Mike Bell?s RBI single in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Hickory had the bases loaded with only one out and did not plate a run. Nate Yoho led off the top of the tenth inning reaching on Cameron Blair?s error. Lorenzo Cain knocked him in later in the inning on an RBI single. Mat Gamel gave the Power a two-run cushion when he drove in Cain on a base hit. Hickory answered in the bottom of the tenth with an RBI single from Steve Pearce. With runners at the corners and two down, Jason Delaney lined out to Power shortstop Mike Bell to end the game. Wil Laureano (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory, Dane Renkert (2) earned the save and Luis Munoz (2-1) obtained the loss. The Power are 15-15 after the win and the Crawdads fell to 12-18 with the loss. Tom Haudricourt: First baseman Prince Fielder, who left the game Sunday in Los Angeles with what was described as groin tightness, is not in the starting lineup tonight for the opener of a three-game series in San Diego. Manager Ned Yost said it was mainly a precautionary move when he took Fielder out of the game Sunday. He indicated Fielder would be OK to play against the Padres but Yost went with veteran infielder Jeff Cirillo at first base in the series opener. "He is day to day with tightness in his right groin," said club media relations director Mike Vassallo. The Brewers, who were swept in three games in Los Angeles, are facing the hottest team in the majors. The Padres have won 10 consecutive games. -

Incredible start to Ty Taubenheim's Blue Jay career -- good for the kid: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...pid=457458 Link while active, text follows: www.syracuse.com/printer/...amp;coll=1 Workout nice and short Friday, May 05, 2006 By Matt Michael Syracuse.com Staff writer On one hand, maybe it wasn't such a bad thing for Syracuse SkyChiefs pitcher Ty Taubenheim that Thursday night's game against the Pawtucket Red Sox was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the third inning at Alliance Bank Stadium. Through three innings, Taubenheim had surrendered four hits and two walks, and only center fielder Wayne Lydon's throw that nailed Jeff Bailey at the plate for the second out of the second inning prevented Pawtucket from scoring a run. "I was battling the whole day against myself more than anything," Taubenheim said. "I just couldn't get in a rhythm." But on the other hand, Taubenheim would have liked a chance to work through his struggles. "I wanted to pinpoint it and beat it until I came through," he said. Taubenheim, one of the SkyChiefs' most pleasant surprises this season, will now have to wait until his next scheduled start Tuesday at Pawtucket. Counting Thursday's three innings, Taubenheim is 2-2 and ranks among the International League leaders with a 1.35 earned run average in 33.1 innings. In December, the Blue Jays acquired first baseman Lyle Overbay and Taubenheim from the Milwaukee Brewers for former SkyChiefs David Bush, Gabe Gross and Zach Jackson. Although he had appeared in only 11 games above Single-A before this season, Taubenheim made the SkyChiefs' AAA opening-day roster after a strong spring training. Taubenheim was named the Blue Jays' minor league pitcher of the month for April in his first month with the organization. -
No word on a corresponding move at this time, although it appears one is required with 26 active players. It's possible RHP Mike Jones is now on the DL. Mike Jones was indeed placed on the Manatee 7-day Disabled List back on May 6th. The minors make use of a 7-day, not 15- or 60-day DL. That's not an indication of how long he'll be out, just the earliest he could be back.
