  1. Great Falls Tribune: On Tuesday, the Helena Brewers (19-11, 43-25) lost their best hitter for a time when Kenny Holmberg, who is hitting .370 with 16 doubles, 11 homers and 48 RBIs, was hit on the thumb by a pitched ball. His hand was bandaged Wednesday, but Holmberg said the thumb isn't broken.
  2. Congratulations to the front office of each of the minor league affiliates, doing what they can in terms of Hurricane Katrina relief funds. While we can't detail each of their efforts specifically here, local fans can contact the front offices or check the team websites (in most cases) should they want additional information.

Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005090227/ Power ends home slate as it began: with big win Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter The West Virginia Power ended their 70-game home schedule the same way they began it: with an exciting win in front of a boisterous capacity crowd at Appalachian Power Park. Southpaw Power starter Derek Miller allowed just two runs working into the sixth inning while Angel Salome and Hasan Rasheed each knocked in a pair of runs in leading the Power to a 5-4 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds Thursday night. A crowd of 4,519 energetic and appreciative fans caught the win. It evened West Virginia's record at 32-32, while Northern Division leader Delmarva dropped to 40-25. And not only was the result similar to the Power's opening night, the excitement level was nearly as high too. "Ironically, it reminded me a lot of opening night," said Power first baseman Grant Richardson. "Every night has been pretty much the same. We get a lot of fans coming out, screaming and hollering whether we were doing well in the season or bad in the season. "I'm glad we could finish strong for them by winning three out of four against the first-place team." Power reliever Dane Renkert (1-0) picked up the win, while Ben Stanczyk picked up his 10th save after working a shaky ninth. "We want to finish strong so that we can build on next year," Power manager Ramon Aviles said. "We played pretty good ball tonight and I'm glad that we could send the fans home with a win. They deserved it." Like Richardson and Aviles, second baseman Will Lewis also wanted to send the fans home with one last win. "Oh man, it was good to give them a win," said Lewis, who had two of the Power's nine hits. "They've been here every game, even when we had our bad streak. "It's good to go out on a positive note and give them something to talk about until next season." And while Lewis arrived in Charleston with much apprehension, he leaves nearly five months later with much appreciation. "When I got here, I was a little nervous," Lewis said. "It was a new place and I really didn't know what to expect. But when we got here they greeted us with open arms. "The host families have been incredible. I have never, ever had an experience like this before. They helped us out so much." Richardson, who also spent the entire season in Charleston, also became attached to his new surroundings, both on and off the field. "The fans have been great," he said. "I couldn't have asked for a better fan base or a better town. I had a lot of fun this summer. "I have no regrets at all. I can honestly say that I've lived it up here. I even went whitewater rafting on one of the off days. That was awesome ... the time of my life."

  5. Brevard County Site Game Summary: Manatees Dominate Cubs Manatees Within One Game of First PLace With Three To Go The Manatees showed the Daytona Cubs they were playoff contenders in a 7-1 romping Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Manatees starter Tim Dillard displayed the same poise and control that made him a Post Season All-Star. Dillard breezed through the Daytona lineup for six innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits and a walk. He struck out six en route to his 12th win of the season. Reliever Joe Thatcher pitched the final three scoreless innings to record his second save. The Manatees bats were hot, starting the scoring early in the first inning on a Drew Anderson double to score Steve Sollmann. Brevard County threw up three runs in each of the sixth and eighth innings before calling it a night. Lou Palmisano and Wandel Campana both had two RBI in the win, and Anderson ended up batting 3-4 with an RBI to add to his team leading batting average of .315. Steve Moss scored three of the Manatees runs in his 2-3 performance. With the win, the Manatees jumped into sole possession of second place in the FSL East Division. The Manatees currently stand one game behind the first place Palm Beach Cardinals, who lost to the Jupiter Hammerheads Thursday night, in the race for the final playoff spot in the East. With three games left to play, the Manatees can increase their playoff chances tomorrow night against the Daytona Cubs at 7:00 pm. (6:00 Central). It's the Manatees final regular season home game of 2005. It's also Fan Appreciation night here at Space Coast Stadium, so early arriving fans through the gates will receive a game used baseball bat courtesy of the Brevard County Manatees.

Link while active, text follows: www.tennessean.com/apps/p...328/SPORTS Sounds struggle in stretch Playoff hopes hang on final home series By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Backing into it. It's a phrase no playoff-bound team relishes hearing, but it's a simple fact facing the Nashville Sounds. Following a season-best five-game win streak to give them a season-best 9½-game lead in the PCL's American North division, the Sounds have lost 16 of their last 20 games. After last night's doubleheader split at Memphis, their lead has dwindled to a game over second-place Omaha with four to play. The Sounds lost Game 1 last night on their third consecutive shutout, falling 1-0 to the Redbirds. The Sounds won the nightcap 4-3. Nashville closes with a four-game series against visiting Round Rock beginning tonight. The Sounds have lost seven of nine games against Round Rock in August and are 4-8 against the Express. Nashville Manager Frank Kemblas knows some doubt has crept into his dugout. "Now that we've started losing, I think they're panicking," he said. "The way they're approaching their at-bats, they're not approaching them like they were." The current tailspin, which began with an 11-2 loss at Memphis on Aug. 13, coincides with the promotions of Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, Kane Davis and Jose Capellan to Milwaukee over a four-day period from Aug. 14-18. "This team, these guys we have now, this team has won before," Kremblas said. " ? I think it would be very disappointing if we don't win." Round Rock won three of four games at Greer Stadium during the Sounds' last home stand, one of four consecutive home-field series that Nashville has lost. Since the All-Star break, the Sounds have won just one of six series at home. Welcome back: The Sounds should have outfielder Brad Nelson back for the Round Rock series. Nelson opened the season with Nashville and was reassigned to Class AA Huntsville on June 29 when Nelson Cruz was called up. At Huntsville, Nelson batted .293 with 6 home runs and 38 RBI in 55 games, after hitting .253 with 6 homers and 37 RBI in 75 games for the Sounds. Nelson was set to join the team last night in Memphis, taking the roster spot created when pitcher Wes Obermueller was recalled by the Brewers.

  9. Huntsville Times: Stars players fail to make All-Star team For 14 consecutive seasons, the Huntsville Stars had at least one member of the Southern League postseason All-Star team. Now, for the fourth time in seven years, the Stars have been shut out. The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx dominated the team, landing right-hander Ricky Nolasco and left-hander Renyel Pinto (coached by Huntsville resident Alan Dunn, the Jaxx pitching coach), along with DH Brandon Sing, the league leader in homers, and outfielder Matt Murton, who led the league in batting before his promotion to Triple-A. Rounding out the team are catcher Russell Martin of Jacksonville, first baseman Casey Rogowski of Birmingham, second baseman Dan Uggla of Tennessee, shortstop Joel Guzman of Jacksonville, third baseman Rico Washington of Montgomery, outfielders Delmon Young of Montgomery, Jerry Owens of Birmingham and Jeremy Hermida of Carolina, reliever Chris Resop of Carolina and Jacksonville's Todd Donovan, elected "Best Hustler."

Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/200508316/ Power gets two victories, runs streak to four wins Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Down nine and a half games in the standings with just eight to play, the West Virginia Power began Tuesday evening's double-header against Delmarva with no hope of reaching the Class A South Atlantic League playoffs. But the Milwaukee Brewer farm team did enter the four-game homestand with an opportunity to influence the Northern Division standings. And that's exactly what the Power did with a 7-4 and 3-1 double-header sweep over the division-leading Shorebirds in front of 2,345 fans on a soggy Two-For-Tuesday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Power evened its record at 31-31, while Delmarva dropped to 39-24. The sweep decreased the Shorebirds' lead to 3 1/2 games over the Lexington Legends and officially designated the Power as a spoiler in the title chase. "We had a chance to win and we ended up coming back to win the game and beat the team that's in first place," said Power first game starter Mark Rogers. "Hopefully, we can play spoiler. "We were talking about it as a team during yesterday's rainout," said Rogers, who tossed four innings in his final home start. "We know we're out of contention for a playoff spot, but we're going to give it everything we've got down the stretch. "We're going to go play spoiler and try to carry some momentum into the offseason." West Virginia trailed the opener 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings, before rallying for a pair of runs in the third, four in the fourth and a single run in the fifth. Hasan Rasheed paced the Power comeback by going 3-for-3, including a pair of RBI singles. Grant Richardson also had two RBI for West Virginia. Charlie Fermaint, Hernan Iribarren and Agustin Septimo each had two hits. "We're just trying to go out on a positive note," said Power outfielder Will Lewis, who started the third inning rally before coming around to score. "We love being the spoiler. At least we can do something." Kevin Roberts (2-2) pitched two innings of relief to pickup the win for the Power. Ben Stanczyk worked the seventh inning for his ninth save. In the nightcap, West Virginia again rallied from an early 1-0 deficit on RBI singles by Angel Salome, Brendan Katin and Rasheed. Power starter Justin Barnes (9-2) pitched 6 2/3 strong innings to pick up the win. Barnes allowed just three hits and came within an out of registering the first complete game of the season for a Power pitcher, before giving way to Robert Hinton, who recorded his team-leading 13th save. Power Manager Ramon Aviles was happy with his team's effort on an evening that was extended by more than an hour due to passing rain showers. "We told the kids that it is very important that we finish the season strong to prepare for next year," said Aviles. "A lot of these kids are going to instructional league after the season, so it's important to play well and carry it over into the instructional season and to get ready for next year. "We just want to go out there and do the best job we can. Whatever happens, happens. We just ask the kids to play hard and they're doing that. I have no problems with that." ***Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section.../200508314 Power takes two from Delmarva By Jay Srinivasan For The Charleston Gazette The West Virginia Power may be out of the playoffs, but it is still fighting. Power batters and pitchers turned it on to sweep the Delmarva Shorebirds 7-4 and 3-1 in Tuesday night?s doubleheader in front of 2,345 paid fans at Appalachian Power Park. ?I wish the season wasn?t [nearly] over,? said the Power manager Ramon Aviles with a wry smile. ?But, there is still next year.? In the first game, the Power batters found their range to rally from a four-run deficit. Down 4-2, the Power exploded in the bottom of the fourth. Will Lewis walked, moved to second on a fielder?s choice and scored when Hasan Rasheed singled. Agustin Septimo then tied the game at 4 with another single to center. With the momentum turning, Charlie Fermaint slammed a double to put runners on second and third, chasing Delmarva starter Radhames Liz in the process. Two more RBIs by Hernan Iribarren and Angel Salome put the Power in front 6-4. Lewis continued the onslaught in the bottom of the fifth with a triple to right-center. One out later, Rasheed singled to left to score Lewis. In all, West Virginia laced 12 hits compared to Delmarva?s six in the opener. ?We played a very good game tonight,? said Aviles. ?We were very aggressive with the bat. We were down four to nothing but we made a great comeback and won the game. ?They started going with the pitch, not trying to do too much. It?s something we have been trying to tell them all year. So, it?s finally starting to sink in and they hit the ball the opposite way ... and they see the results.? The Shorebirds jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Jason Fransz?s homer to right. Arturo Rivas then made it 4-0 in the top of the third with a two-run triple to right. The Power started its rally in the bottom of the third. Rasheed, Fermaint and Iribarren singled to load the bases. Grant Richardson followed with a single to left to cut the deficit to 4-2. For the Power, Kevin Roberts (2-2) earned the win after pitching two innings, yielding only one hit while striking out one. Ben Stancyzk worked the ninth inning for his ninth save. In the second game, Justin Barnes (9-2) took the center stage, pitching 6 2/3 strong innings. After allowing a run in the top of the first on a Fransz RBI single, Barnes shut out the Shorebirds in the next six innings. At one stage, he retired 11 straight batters. Power pitching coach Jim Rooney described Barnes? effort as outstanding. ?He showed flashes when he won a couple of times in relief,? said Rooney. ?So, we knew he could do the job. Tonight he had the fastball command. He had the ability to go in and out, also coming with some change ups. He had a pretty good curveball, too.? The Power took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Fermaint doubled, moved to third on an Iribarren sacrifice bunt and scored when Salome hit a single to right. Rasheed then hit the go-ahead run with a single to right. An RBI by Brendan Katin in the bottom of the third made it 3-1. 11. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005090122/ Power pitcher always seems to start off on wrong foot Michael A. Jones Charleston Daily Mail Staff If only Greg Kloosterman didn't have to pitch in the first inning. Unfortunately, that's a requirement for a starting pitcher. The West Virginia Power's big left-hander struggled again through the first, giving up three runs in a 3-0 loss to the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds Wednesday before 2,528 fans at Appalachian Power Park. Kloosterman gave up two singles, a walk and was charged with a throwing error before recording an out. He settled down and retired the next 11 batters. Dave Johnson replaced him in the fifth with two outs and the bases loaded. Johnson struck out right fielder Quincy Ascension to end the threat. Shorebirds starter Josh Potter pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings to improve his record to 4-3. In 27 starts this season, Kloosterman, a ninth-round pick in the 2003 Major League Amateur Draft, has given up 29 earned runs in the first inning, including one Wednesday night. His ERA in the opening frame is now 9.67. The loss dropped Kloosterman to 4-19 on the season one week after he set a South Atlantic League record for losses in a season. Charles Thompson and Gary Glover shared the record with 17. Despite the win-loss record, interim pitching coach Jim Rooney sees positives in Kloosterman's otherwise bleak season. "Even when he was throwing the ball well, there was a lack of run support and sometimes there was a lack of defensive support," Rooney said. "But he seemed to have a knack of staying around and keeping the team in the game." The Power didn't supply Kloosterman with any offensive support, although it had numerous opportunities. West Virginia stranded seven runners, four in scoring position, while recording only six hits. Manager Ramon Aviles was not pleased with how his players opened the game. "The whole team didn't come out ready to play the first inning and that cost us the game," Aviles said. "We didn't execute a couple of plays in that inning." Aviles doesn't believe Kloosterman's statistics accurately reflect his season, pointing to the lack of run support throughout the year. Five times this year, Kloosterman has given up one earned run, but still lost. "He's not catching a break," Aviles said. "When he doesn't make a pitch, they hit it. Sometimes we don't hit behind him." Rooney, who replaced John Curtis last month after Curtis sustained a head injury when he struck by a batted ball during batting practice, said he is pleased with Kloosterman's work after a tough season in 2004. "Greg kind of went through some difficulties last year and this was kind of his comeback year," he said. "Especially early on he was throwing the ball extremely well." Rooney thinks the losing record has taken a toll on Kloosterman, though, but he likes his resolve and believes it will make him into a better pitcher. "Eventually over the last month, just the whole process of him losing games started getting to him mentally and then you started to see some bad outings," Rooney said. "If he makes it through it, which I think he will, hopefully the lessons he's learned can carry into next year," he said. Notes: The Power made another roster move before Wednesday night's game. Right-hander Derek DeCarlo was placed on the disabled list and is out for the final week of the season with a sore hip. Outfielder Nate Yoho took DeCarlo's spot on the roster, but was not in the starting lineup. Yoho hit .298 with 29 RBI while playing for the rookie league Arizona Brewers. With his promotion, Yoho became the 46th different member to play for the Power. That's a dramatic increase from the 2004 Alley Cats, who had 35 players. ***Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005083162 Power?s Kloosterman falls to 4-19 By Jay Srinivasan For The Charleston Gazette Greg Kloosterman?s performance Wednesday night was symptomatic of the troubles he has faced the entire season. The West Virginia Power pitcher?s penchant to get into trouble early in the game resurfaced as the Delmarva Shorebirds eased to a 3-0 victory in front of 2,528 paid fans at Appalachian Power Park. With the loss, Kloosterman fell to 4-19. His 19 losses are the most in the South Atlantic League. No other pitcher has more than 13. All three Delmarva runs came in the first inning. ?It just seems like sometimes with Greggy, he feels his way a little bit and then finally with his back to the wall, he starts to battle,? said Power pitching coach Jim Rooney. ?The first inning was a prime example. ?It happens, especially when you are having the type of season that he is having. And part of development is not only to learn how to pitch and the other aspects of the game, but also to learn how to win. And that?s going to be a big hurdle for him.? Leadoff hitter Paco Figueroa hit Kloosterman?s fifth pitch for a single and Gary Cates walked. Next up, Quincy Ascencion bunted and what should have been an easy out turned into a run when Kloosterman threw errantly past first base to score Figueroa. Jason Fransz then walloped a single to left to make it 2-0. Ascenscion stole third and scored as Arturo Rivas grounded into a double play. ?Sometimes a guy goes through that ... they don?t catch any breaks,? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?Either he makes a good pitch and somebody hits it or somebody [in the field] doesn?t make a play. Tonight, he didn?t make a play himself and that cost him the ballgame. ?He is 24. In a way, he is too old to go to rookie ball. He has to play here or higher. So, we kept him here all year because we think he can pitch. It?s just one of those years when nothing is working for him.? Kloosterman?s teammates also didn?t give him any support offensively, despite having a few chances. In the bottom of the third, Hasan Rasheed, Agustin Septimo and Hernan Iribarren walked to load the bases. But Angel Salome struck out looking to finish the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Iribarren doubled and moved to third on a fielder?s choice. Grant Richardson followed with a walk, but Carlos Corporan flied out to leave the runners stranded. For the Shorebirds, Joshua Potter (4-3) got the win after working six innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out two. Justin Henington pitched a perfect ninth for his 15th save. Kloosterman yielded four hits, three runs ? two of them earned ? and walked three. ?Early on, I think I give a little too much of the plate to the hitters,? admitted Kloosterman. ?It seems to be likely. I am trying to pitch on both sides of the plate. It?s just about the execution of the pitches and I didn?t do a good job of it.?
  12. West Virginia Press Release: The West Virginia Power, class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers have made another change to their roster. Outfielder Nate Yoho was added to the roster and he will take the place of right-handed pitcher Derek DeCarlo who was placed on the disabled list. DeCarlo was placed on the disabled list due to a sore hip and will miss the remainder of the season. DeCarlo went 6-4 with a 4.94 ERA with the Power over 32 appearances, including five starts. Yoho comes to the Power from the Arizona Brewers where he hit .298 with five triples and 29 RBI over 40 games. Yoho signed with the Brewers as a non-drafted free agent. He played his college ball at the University of Iowa.

  14. Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Ryan Costello, Brevard County 2 G, 2 GS, 0 CG, 0 SHO, 2-0, 1.26 ERA, 14.1 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 15 SO, 0 SV The last time Costello won the FSL Pitcher of the Week award in late May, it helped earn him a promotion to Double-A Huntsville, where things didn't go so well for the big lefty. The 26-year-old hurler limped to an 0-5 record with a 10.13 ERA in nine Southern League outings before returning to Brevard County, where he proceeded to lose four more starts before finally righting himself last week. Costello stepped up when the Manatees needed him most, beating the two teams ahead of them in the East Division -- Palm Beach and Vero Beach -- in a crucial 12-game stretch in which Brevard County plays each team six times. He held both Beaches to one run, first yielding five hits and a walk over seven innings in a 6-1 win over Vero on Monday, then limiting the Cardinals to six hits through 7 1/3 innings of a 9-1 win Sunday. He struck out seven in the first outing, eight in the second and helped the Manatees finish the week 2.5 games out of first.
  15. Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...005_04.txt Brewers topple Mustangs By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer Will Inman definitely earns his keep. The Helena starter pitched six complete shutout innings Monday night, collecting eight strikeouts and his sixth win as the Brewers beat Missoula 10-1. "Reliable is a good word to describe Will," said Helena pitching coach Mark Littell. "He's not afraid to challenge hitters. He's got a really nice fastball but he's not afraid to use his secondary pitches." Inman (6-0, 1.60) allowed no walks and only five hits in his time on the mound. He also retired the first three batters in three innings. The only scare Inman had was in the third inning, when Steve Mena came home on a double from Pedro Ciriaco, but Helena centerfielder Darren Ford fired the ball in to shortstop Ryan Crew. Crew's relay to catcher Brad Willcutt was just in time to stop Mena inches short of the plate. "Inman set the table," said Littell. "And Marty finished him off." Marty, as Littell calls him, is actually closer Ryan Marion. Marrion pitched the last three innings of the game, and allowed only one hit, a solo homerun from Will Crouch in the ninth. It was an inconsequential run, as Marrion struck out five batters, getting the three-inning save. Helena's home runs had a different effect. Kenny Holmberg got an early start, sending a three-run shot over the left field wall in the first inning. Holmberg, who is batting .374, was 4-for-5 with six RBI. Willcutt also homered to left in the third, clearing the forty foot net with his solo knock. Michael Brantley, appearing in only his second game with the Helena Brewers, is already making waves. The leftfielder was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a ground rule double in the game. With the series tied at one each, the Brewers and the Osprey will meet at Kindrick Legion Field again tonight. The Brewers will give the nod to Robbie Wooley (6-5, 4.55), and Missoula will send Matt Green (3-3, 5.71) to the mound.
