  3. Link, text follows: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1501 Nashville Site Game Summary: The Nashville Sounds continued to thrive as a comeback club on Monday evening, plating six runs over the final two innings to erase a 7-2 deficit and post a dramatic 8-7 victory over the visiting Oklahoma RedHawks in the opener of a four-game series. 24-year veteran Pat Borders delivered the decisive blow, lining a two-out RBI single to center on a 1-0 pitch from Oklahoma reliever Jose Veras to plate Brad Nelson with the winning run. Down by five, the Sounds rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, keyed by four two-out singles against Veras from Borders, Steve Scarborough, Dave Krynzel, and Rickie Weeks, the last of which brought home Ryan Knox to tie the game at 7-7. The final five runs in the game for the Sounds all came with two outs in an inning. Oklahoma rightfielder Jason Conti put the visitors on the board first, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo homer to right off Sounds starter Andy Pratt in the top of the first inning. The RedHawks homer barrage continued in the second when Cody Ransom made it 4-0 when he belted a three-run homer to deep left off Pratt, plating Laynce Nix and Manny Alexander in front of him. Krynzel mashed his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third, one-hopping a John Wasdin offering onto Chestnut Street beyond the right field fence to make it 4-1. The visitors quickly got the run back in the top of the fourth when speedy leadoff hitter Andres Torres doubled to center and scored later in the frame on Marshall McDougall?s RBI single for a 5-1 lead. Krynzel was at it again for Nashville in the home half of the fifth, ripping a one-out RBI double down the right field line to bring in Scarborough, who had extended his season-opening hitting streak to five games with a single earlier in the inning. With the score 5-2, Wasdin escaped further damage in the frame when he left Nashville runners stranded at second and third by inducing a groundout from Weeks and popout from Corey Hart. The RedHawks did more damage in the sixth against Sounds reliever Mike Meyers. After Greg Colbrunn and Conti drew walks on 3-2 counts, Ian Kinsler plated both on a double into the left field corner to increase the lead to 7-2. Krynzel (3-for-5, 4 RBI) and Scarborough (2-for-4, 2 R) each extended his season-opening hitting streak to five games in the victory for the Sounds; Krynzel's four-RBI effort increased his team-leading total to 11 on the year. Reliever Julio Santana (1-0) was the beneficiary of the latest Nashville comeback, earning the victory after tossing a pair of scoreless innings for the Sounds. Veras (0-1) took the loss after giving up the final four Sounds runs on five hits and three walks in his 1 1/3 frames. The teams continue their series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Jose Capellan (0-0, 4.15) toes the rubber for Nashville to face RedHawks right-hander Jason Standridge (0-1, 1.69). 6. Game Summary from the Huntsville Site: Russell Martin doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning to lift the Suns to a 7-6 comeback win over the Stars Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Stars dropped to 0-5 to start a season for the first time since 1987 and for just the second time in franchise history. Jacksonville shortstop Joel Guzman walked to open the 10th inning and was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by Sergio Garcia, who figured prominently in the Suns' five-run ninth inning rally that sent the game into extra innings. Martin followed by driving a 2-1 offering from Alec Zumwalt into the alley in left-center field to chase Guzman home with the winning run. The Suns improved to 3-2 and have now scored 22 of their 29 runs on the season from the seventh inning on. The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ben Van Iderstine delivered a two-out single to score Nelson Cruz, who had started the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground ball out. The visitors pushed their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when Enrique Cruz, pitcher Khalid Ballouli and Tony Gwynn, Jr. strung together consecutive two-out singles. Jacksonville starter Eric Stults, on the mend from Tommy John surgery, was charged with both runs on six hits over his five innings of work. Right-hander Richard Bartlett took over in the sixth inning and allowed consecutive run-scoring singles to Van Iderstine, Brandon Gemoll and Enrique Cruz that extended the Huntsville lead to 5-0. Chris Barnwell, pinch-hitting for Ballouli, knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to complete the Stars' first offensive output of the season of more than one run and push the lead to 6-0. Bartlett allowed nine hits in 2 1/3 innings in his second outing of the season. Ballouli retired the final 13 hitters he faced after yielding a two-out single to Guzman in the first inning and ended four of his five innings with strikeouts. The right-hander fanned seven and did not walk a batter in his first start of the season. David Bradley worked a scoreless sixth and seventh inning before giving up a Delwyn Young solo home run in the eighth that got the home team on the scoreboard. Jerome Gamble took over on the hill in the ninth for Huntsville and started the inning by striking out Brian Sprout but a wild pitch allowed the Suns' infielder/outfielder to reach first base. Garcia delivered a one-out, pinch-hit single and Martin singled to load the bases before Van Iderstine?s throw back to third base from left field got past Barnwell and Enrique Cruz, allowing Sprout to score and the other runners to advance one base. Gamble then fanned Young but another wild pitch permitted Garcia to score and Young to reach safely and brought Zumwalt out of the Huntsville bullpen. The right-hander?s first pitch was smacked into center field for a base hit by Nick Alvarez that scored Martin to trim the lead to 6-4. Tydus Meadows walked to load the bases and Jimmy Rohan flied out to shallow center for the second out of the frame. Todd Donovan then lined the first pitch he saw to center for a single that plated Young and Alvarez to tie the game at six. The Stars collected 17 hits, three more than they had compiled during the four-game series against Carolina to open the season. Nelson Cruz, Enrique Cruz and Van Iderstine each had three hits, while Gwynn, Jr., Barnwell and Vinny Rottino each chipped in with a pair. The series continues Tuesday morning with left-hander Dana Eveland making his second start for Huntsville against right-hander Chad Billingsley, one of the top pitching prospects in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system. Coverage of the game begins at 9:50 AM Central Time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

  8. Nothing worth noting from the Port St. Lucie site in their Brevard County game summary... West Virginia Game Summary (Lexington Site): Legends Power Past West VirginiaSaul Torres clubbed a three run home run and Ben Zobrist smacked a three run double to lead Lexington to an 8-5 win over West Virginia Monday night. The homer by Torres was just the third by a Legend this season. Zobrist also walked once bringing his season total to nine free passes in five games. Ryan McKeller (1-0) earned the win with five innings of work. The Pflugerville, Texas native allowed three runs on an RBI double by Hernan Iribarren in the third inning and a two run double in the fourth by Nestor Corredor. Enyelbert Soto tossed an inning and third to collect his first save of the season. The Legends eight runs and twelve hits were both season highs. The pitching staff also struck out ten batters. It?s the third time they?ve hit double-digit strikeouts in game this season. Every Legend batter had a least one hit in the game. Mitch Einertson ended his 0-15 slump with a single to left field in the third inning. Former Brewer draft pick Hunter Pence had his first multi-hit game of the year with two singles. Torres had a single to go along with his home run and Scott Robinson continued his hot start with a double and a single. Lexington will try to get back to .500 Tuesday night. The Legends will send Ronnie Martinez (0-1) to the mound to face West Virginia?s Josh Wahpepah at 7:05 (6:05 Central).

  13. OF Jason Tuttle was acquired in trade from the Nationals in spring training, as previously mentioned. The particulars of this very minor deal is that there is to be either a PTBNL or cash in exchange. Tuttle, like the rest of the Power batters, is off to a slow start, as in 0-for-10 with three K's. The fact both Charlie Fermaint and Hasan Rasheed are injured (to what extent we don't know) probably prompted the deal.
  14. Suns use jump start to jolt Power by BOB PARASILITI bobp@herald-mail.com Hagerstown Herald Mail Ryan Coultas will never be confused with the Dalai Lama, Ghandi or even Phil Jackson. His methods weren't products of meditation, yoga or even Zen thinking. It was something much simpler. Coultas brought the stress and pressure of a fourth-inning bases-loaded situation down to the level of returning a movie rental before its deadline. Hagerstown's second baseman won the battle and the war by stroking a clutch, two-run single to ignite a three-run rally Sunday and lift the Suns to a 6-0 win over the West Virginia Power before 3,404 at Municipal Stadium. "It was just a case that you have to go up there and concentrate and focus more," Coultas said. "You have to realize that when the bases are loaded, it's pitcher is the one that is in trouble." It's been a situation that the Power has been accustomed to for the entire season-opening weekend of the Suns' 25th anniversary season. The Suns swept West Virginia out of town with four straight wins by a combined score of 20-5, giving Hagerstown sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division. Hagerstown jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second off West Virginia starter Forrest Martin with Mike Carp's leadoff home run to left. The Suns settled in behind the starting pitching of Jose Sanchez (1-0), who threw five innings of one-hit pitching with a walk and four strikeouts. Sanchez combined with Tim Worthington and Kevin Mannix for a three-hit shutout of the Power, who hit .127 in the series against Suns pitching. Hagerstown batted around in the fourth inning, loading the bases with two outs. That brought Coultas up in the situation that hurt the Suns during their 2-1 win on Saturday. Hagerstown loaded the bases with no outs and a 2-0 lead in the eighth and failed to score a run, giving manger Gene Richards one of the few things to be concerned about this season. Coultas showed patience to get his count and singled home Grant Psomas and Tyler Davidson. "It was just a fastball with a 2-0 count," Coultas said. "It was the only pitch I was looking for." Rafael Arroyo and Wilson Batista drew consecutive walks off reliever Brian Montalbo to bring home Jesus Gamero to give the Suns at 4-0 lead. "These guys are making adjustments," Richards said. "It's only the fourth day of the season, but hopefully we are seeing positive things. Coultas gave us a good at-bat. This time we executed. If we execute (in bases-loaded situations) at least one-third of the time, I'll be happy." Ambiorix Conception and Carp led off the fifth with back-to-back doubles off Montalbo to produce a run in the fifth. The Suns closed the scoring with a double by Arroyo and a two-out single by Carlos Gomez in the sixth to complete the six-run cushion. "Our pitching has been phenomenal," Coultas said. "We are not just throwing guys out there just to throw. It's so easy to stay focused. They aren't walking guys and we are able to play uptempo." West Virgina's only threat was thwarted in spectacular fashion in the sixth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Hernan Iribarren grounded a single to short center. Concepcion charged the ball and fired home, where Arroyo decoyed base runner William Lewis at the plate by not moving until the ball arrived to make a snap tag for the out. "(Being 4-0) is a big deal," Richards said. "You want to start out as positively as you can before you make your first road trip. We have (Lakewood) coming in here tomorrow and each new team is a new adventure."

  22. West Virginia Game Summary (Hagerstown Site): The Hagerstown Suns pulled the plug on the West Virginia Power Sunday 6-0, earning an opening weekend sweep. The Suns used three pitchers to shutout the Power and remain in first place in the SAL North Division. The Suns starting pitching has been spectacular all series long, hurling over 19 innings and not allowing a single run. Today was no exception as starter Jose Sanchez picked up the win striking out four in five innings and giving up just one hit. Hagerstown's offense hasn't exactly been a weak link and today they used a solo homerun by Mike Carp in the second inning to jump out in front and piled on five more runs. Grant Psomas continued his hot streak, and extended his hit streak to four games, with a single in the fourth inning. Hernan Iribarren, one of the few bright spots for the Power kept his four-game streak alive as well. Perhaps the biggest reaction from the crowd of over 3,400 came when centerfielder Ambiorix Concepcion showed off his throwing skills, gunning down West Virginia's William Lewis at the plate in the sixth inning to preserve the shutout.
  23. Brevard County Game Summary (Daytona Beach Site): For the third straight game, the Daytona Cubs received a stellar performance from their pitching staff. The Cubs beat the Brevard County Manatees 6-1 Sunday night behind six scoreless innings from starter JR Mathes. Mathes (1-0) scattered three hits over six innings, striking out six Manatee batters and walking only one. Adalberto Mendez notched his second save of the season striking out the side in the ninth. The Cubs got on the board early as Kevin Collins and Scott Moore collaborated with back-to-back doubles in the second inning for the first run of the game. Collins and Moore drew consecutive walks to begin the fourth and were knocked in by a double by Drew Larsen and a sacrifice fly Tony Richie respectively. Richie drove in four of Daytona's six runs. He cemented the win with a three-run shot off Pine Ridge graduate Nick Slack in the eighth. "He left me a curveball up; I was just trying to get a good pitch to hit," said Richie, whose fellow catcher, Jake Fox, made a heroic defensive play to spark the Cubs' win Saturday night. "It seemed like their guys were trying to throw curveballs to get ahead, so I was kind of looking for it." Moore reached base four times in Sunday night?s contest. After doubling in the second, he walked twice and singled. Drew Larson also had a good night at the plate with a double and a triple in three at-bats while spelling regular left-fielder Kyle Boyer. The lone Manatees run came on a solo home run by catcher Lou Palmisano. Palmisano was 3-for-9 in the series, but notched his first extra-base hit of the season with the homer in the seventh. Slack pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief for Brevard County. He allowed a hit -- Richie's three-run homer -- walked one and hit a batter.
  24. Different quotes here, link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=40588 Krynzel?s triple lifts Sounds to win By Mark McGee, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent When it is all said and done, Nashville Sounds lead-off hitter Dave Krynzel is more worried about perfecting his bunting mechanics than driving in runs. ?I really need to get my bunts down,? said Krynzel. ?Bunts are something that I really focus on.? But his triple to deep center gave the Sounds a 5-3 victory against the New Orleans Zephyrs on a sun-splashed Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium. ?I hit the ball solid, and that?s all I?m looking for, especially in the lead-off spot? said Krynzel who has hits in all four Sounds games this season, including a lead-off single on the first pitch of the game. ?I just want to get on base and let the big boys hit. This game it was kind of in reverse and it worked out.? With one out in the seventh, and the Sounds trailing 3-2, Trent Durrington reached base on a single to up the middle with one out. Pat Borders grounded out for the second out of the inning moving Durrington to second. New Orleans reliever Dan Smith threw a wild pitch to move Durrington to third. Steve Scarborough singled to third base to score Durrington. Matt Erickson pinch-hits for pitcher Chad Paronto, and singles through the hole at second base. Both runners scored on Krynzel?s triple. ?Since he has played for me he has gotten big hits like that,? said Nashville manager Frank Kremblas. ?He?s a not a slap hitter. He can fly, but he?s not a little scrawny guy.? Kremblas credited the pitching for keeping the Sounds in the game. Starter Rick Helling, who threw a perfect game against the Sounds as a member of the old Oklaoma City 89ers in 1996, pitched 5.2 innings. Helling allowed six hits, struck out four and allowed all three runs. Chad Paronto pitched 1.1 innings to go to 2-0 on the season. Jeff Bennett pitched the final two innings to pick up his first save on the Class AAA level. ?We needed Rick to go at least five, and he did a good job,? Kremblas said. ?Chad came in and did a good job and Mr. Bennett shut the door. We?re going to be in games more with our pitching than our offense.? Nashville closed out the series with New Orleans with a 3-1 advantage. Tonight at 7 Oklahoma City opens a four-game series with former Sounds pitcher John Wasdin (0-1), who pitched a perfect game at Greer two years ago on April 7 facing Andy Pratt in his first start of the season. ?We?re a great team,? Krynzel said. ?We?re going to win games. You never know what is going to happen in our lineup from one through nine. There are no weak spots. Everyone of us knows what we need to work on individually to get to the next level. It was a good first series for us.? Quick hits: With 3,577 fans Sunday, the Sounds averaged 6,113 fans during the four-game series. ?Five of the eight runs, including the final five, were scored with two outs. ? Scarborough also has a four-game hitting streak. ..The Sounds failed to hit a home run in a game for the first time this season.
  25. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/sports/bas...D=68079139 New-look Sounds off to big start By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Showing some resilience, the Nashville Sounds bounced back from Saturday's loss to New Orleans yesterday with a 5-3 comeback win, claiming three victories in the four-game series. ''We don't like to lose. Hopefully when we do, it's because we got beat ? because the other team did things better that game,'' Sounds center fielder Dave Krynzel said. ''(Saturday) we left four guys at third base. We lost that game because we didn't do the right things. But we learn from our mistakes.'' Krynzel, who fouled off a two-strike bunt attempt with a runner at third in Saturday's 5-4 loss, bypassed the small-ball approach in yesterday's seventh inning. After Steve Scarborough's RBI single tied the game at 3-3, Krynzel hammered a triple to right-center field, scoring Scarborough and Matt Erickson for the deciding margin. ''That was a big hit by Krynzel, after big hits by (Trent) Durrington and Scarborough,'' Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. It was the second comeback of the day for the Sounds, who trailed 1-0 before Brad Nelson's two-run double in the fourth. However, the Zephyrs tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth. Rick Helling became the first Nashville Sounds starter to pitch into the sixth inning, working 5 2/3 innings before yielding to the bullpen. Chad Paronto threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory, with Jeff Bennett pitching two hitless innings to earn his first Class AAA save. ''We wanted Rick to finish the sixth, but I think he ran out of gas,'' Kremblas said. ''But he did an outstanding job just extending the innings for us and allowing us to only have to use two relievers. ''I think we'll be in our games more because of pitching and defense. Our offense looked good the first two days; the last two days, it was OK. We had chances (Saturday) and didn't come through, and we got some timely hitting (yesterday).'' Streakers: Scarborough and Krynzel have hits in each of Nashville's four games. Among Sounds with 10 or more at-bats, they're 1-2 in bating average ? Scarborough at .462 and Krynzel at .400. Extra, extra: Seventeen of the Sounds' 37 hits have been for extra bases ? six home runs, nine doubles and two triples. Four Sounds have three extra-base hits each ? Rickie Weeks (double, triple and homer in Friday's game) Scarborough (double, two homers), Krynzel (two doubles, triple) and Nelson (three doubles). Slow start: Nashville's starters have yet to figure into a decision. Jose Capellan and Ben Hendrickson were both in line for victories on Thursday and Friday but were unable to go the required five innings. Reliever Justin Lehr took Saturday's loss after Paronto (Thursday) and Mike Meyers (Friday) picked up the first two wins. Early movement: New Orleans had five roster transactions before getting three games into the season, with pitchers Micah Bowie and Josh Karp going on the disabled list and infielder Carlos Baerga going up to Washington following an injury to Wil Cordero. Pitcher Travis Hughes and infielder Wes Carroll were added to the roster. The Sounds, who underwent 124 transactions last season, have yet to make a move. What they said: ''With these young guys, there are going to be ups and downs; it's part of the maturation process. But they've got to go to the plate with a plan and try to execute that plan.'' ? Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas. Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. He can be reached at 259-8018 or mopatton@tennessean.com.
