Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday A couple of items might be a bit repetitive -- running it in its entirety tonight: TONIGHT: The Indians and Toledo Mud Hens will meet in a doubleheader for the first two games of a three-game series. The teams will play seven times in the next two weeks to wrap-up the season. Tonight marks the start of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Indians are only 11-21 against division foes this season. The Tribe hopes tonight's twinbill is nothing like Friday's when the first game at Charlotte went 18 innings. The six-hour, 20-minute marathon ended at 12:37 EDT. Game two started at 1:01 a.m., and didn't end until 2:55. The Indians just finished a stretch where 21 of 26 games were against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians went 10-11 in these recent match-ups, and 22-26 against South foes for the season. The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 17 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .244 and have scored 49 runs (2.89 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in nine of the 17 games. The Indians are a season-low 17 games under .500 for the third time this season. The last time the Tribe was 18 games below .500 was July 20, 1993. The last time the Indians were more than 18 games under came on Sept. 3, 1990 when they finished the season at -24. HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: The Indians will celebrate Rowdie's 10th birthday with a mascot t-ball game between games of the DH. THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 9-11 in that stretch, including a 7-6 mark at Victory Field. YESTERDAY: Norfolk beat the Indians 7-4. The teams split all four series they played and finished the season with a 6-6 mark in head-to-head play. Jeff Duncan and Mike Glavine hit two-run homers in the first inning to lead the Tides. Jim Rushford and Pete Zoccolillo each drove in two runs for the Indians. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Ben Ford makes his seventh start and 24th appearance for the Indians tonight. Since coming back into the rotation on Aug. 2, Ford has made three starts and has allowed five earned runs in 19.2 innings (2.29 ERA). The middle start of those three came on Aug. 7 at Toledo in a 2-1 Tribe win. Ford held the Hens to one run on two hits over seven innings. Ford also faced Toledo in his first start of the season on June 6. He took the loss after allowing three runs in five innings. Lefthander Shane Nance will come out of the bullpen for a spot start in game two. Nance has not made a start since September 2000 when he pitched for Yakima during his rookie season. Nance currently boasts the longest scoreless innings streak in the minor leagues this season. Since May 23, Nance has worked 34.0 innings in 24 games without allowing a run. In that period, he has allowed 14 hits and five walks while striking out 26. The streak is the longest in the minors since Dodgers farmhand Orlando Rodriguez worked 35.0 consecutive scoreless innings last season. Beyond that, Norwich's Christian Parker put together 40.0 scoreless innings in 2000. Nance's longest outing this season was three innings against Scranton on June 13. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .316 average and fifth with a .380 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers having thrown out 53.3% of would-be basestealers. HOT AT THE PLATE: Jim Rushford brings a season-long 10-game hitting streak into tonight's game. Rushford's longest hitting streak last season was 12 games in August. Alex Delgado has hit safely in 12 of 13 games since July 26 (.452, 19-for-42). THE MAN'S GOT A GUN: OF Jason Conti recorded three assists in the first game of a doubleheader August 15. That brought his league-leading total to 19. Conti's assist total is the most in the IL since Jay Buhner (Columbus) had 20 in 1987. When the Indians were in the American Association, New Orleans' Kevin Koslofski had 19 assists in 1995. Buffalo's William Pennyfeather had 21 assists in 1993. DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a major league rehabilitation assignment. Durocher made six one-inning appearances on rehab with the Indians in May going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA. After just six games back with Milwaukee (2-0, 11.04), Durocher was placed on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. BROTHERLY LOVE: RHPs Jason and Matt Childers are the first set of brothers to wear Indians uniforms at the same time since Aaron and Bret Boone suited up for the Tribe on June 19, 1997. Jason had the honor of saving Matt's first Triple-A win on August 7 at Toledo. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has not happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. The Childers brothers have previously been teammates in 1997 (Helena), 1998 (Beloit), 2000 (Mudville) and 2001 (Huntsville). UPCOMING PROBABLES: Tuesday vs. Toledo - LHP Andy Van Hekken (3-6, 6.24) vs. LHP Derek Lee (1-3, 4.58) -

As discussed on the Major League forum, Ulice Payne was a guest of Jim Powell's during the Brewer game Sunday. Ulice mentioned that during the Beloit Miller Park game, the Brewers had brought injured Helena catcher Lou Palmisano to town for the game, at which point Powell let out with an emphatic "Captain Lou!". Thanks for building the love for the nickname, JP. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: THE STARS STUMBLE AGAIN AT FOURThe Stars can't seem to get over this hump....... They came into tonight's game with a four-game win streak, looking to make it five, but they failed again ---- for the 6th time this season....... They had two excellent opportunites to break this game wide open in the late innings, but failed. They had a proven stopper in Jeff Housman who came into this game with a 3-0 record and a ridiculous 1.14 ERA, but failed. It was just one frustrating night and they have just two weeks left in the season....... I don't know. Maybe they're going to wait until the last week of the season, like they did last year, when they put together a six-game win streak before losing the last game of the season. Jon Knott and Todd Donovan put the Stars in the hole with a pair of home runs into a dead sky, both similar in that they came on Housman's first pitch and they landed on the hillside beyond the left field wall. Donovan's two-run shot gave the Bay Bears a decisive 4-0 lead in the 5th inning. The Stars, down 4-0 fought back, after five scoreless innings....... Duncan McAdoo, who had not allowed more than three runs in each of his last three starts, had set down six straight hitters when Dave Krynzel hit a 2-2 pitch into right field for a single in the 6th. Krynzel then stole 2nd, his 40th stolen base of the year (the 6th Huntsville Star in club history to steal 40 in a season)........ J.J. Hardy stepped up and pounded a 3-2 pitch over the head of Todd Donovan and off the left field wall for a double to bring in Krynzel, but Hardy was stranded by Corey Hart on a ground ball to J.J. Furmaniak. In the 7th, the Stars loaded the bases with one out and for all their effort, only got a run on a bloop single by Noochie Varner over the head of Jake Gautreau, who tried to make a basket catch in shallow right. That scored Brandon Gemoll, who had singled and reached third on a wild pitch........ After Varner's hit, J.J. Furmaniak booted a ground ball by Daryl Clark. That prompted Mobile manager Craig Colbert to bring in R.D. Spiehs (0-1, 3.29, 12 Ks, 3 BBs, 13 2/3 IP) and he closed the door...... Mike Kremblas bunted for a hit with two strikes on him to load the bases, but Brad Nelson struck out on a 3-2 pitch, after fouling off a number of pitches, and Chris Barnwell flied out to Vince Faison in right, who gunned down Varner at the plate to complete the inning-ending double play. Trailing 5-2 in the 8th, the Stars were once again turned back, stranding runners on 2nd and 3rd....... Krynzel and Hardy both led off with walks against J.J. Trujillo and his frisbee slider. Krynzel then advanced to third on Hart's deep fly out to center........ After Gemoll singled to right, scoring Krynzel to make it 5-3, and pushing Hardy to second, Bryan Gaal was called in from the bullpen......... The Stars have been successful all season in teeing off against him. In 7 games this season, Gaal's ERA vs. Huntsville was 6.43 and Huntsville batters were hitting nearly .400 off him....... It looked like the Stars had the upper hand on him again when Gaal's wild pitch with Varner at bat sent runners to second and third, but Gaal this time got lucky and took control....... Varner struck out on a 2-2 fast ball and got D.J. looking as well with a fast ball on the hands and for all that effort, the Stars came away with just one run again....... Gaal who had allowed 12 hits in seven innings in his previous seven appearances against the Stars, held the Stars hitless and scoreless for 1 2/3 innings. Monday night, Dave Nolasco (2-2, 4.30) will take on Chris Rojas (5-9, 4.55)....... Rojas is 2-3 with a 3.50 ERA agaginst the Stars in 6 appearances and three previous starts this season in 13 innings....... Justin Germano will make his Mobile debut as the starter in Tuesday's game........ Four other times in Huntsville Stars history, they have failed to string more than four straight victories together --- 1993, 1995, 1996, and 2000. None of those were playoff seasons....... Dave Krynzel ran his streak to 11 games with a strikeout in his first at-bat. The record, since my records on this can only go back to 1996, is 14 by T.R. Marcinczyk during the 1998 season. Duncan McAdoo fanned him on a high fastball, a pitch that as of late, has been irresistable and vulnerable to Krynzel........ Kade Johnson is day-to-day. He was clipped on the forearm by a pitch in Friday's game vs. Chattanooga, and the area from the elbow to the wrist is swollen. Kade can't fully flex the wrist, so he'll be out for awhile........ Ryan Gripp, who was released by the Stars on August 6, despite hitting .392 in July, has caught on with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the independent Northern League. Saturday, he drove in a run in Winnipeg's 10-4 victory over Gary, but went 0-for-4 in his first game for them. -

Ogden (Dodgers) 8, Helena 5 A couple of game notes from the Ogden site: Chad Billingsley struck out the first six Brewers he faced and that spurred the Raptors to their first win of the season over Helena. Billingsley finished with 11 K's in five innings, while improving his record to 4-3. The series now moves to Helena Monday night. Helena Box Score: LHP Carlos Ramirez with his first truly rough outing of 2003; CF Terry Trofholz with yet another multi-hit game and four SB's -- considering he'll be 23 in September, he'll be an ideal candidate for CF duties in High Desert next season while Steve Moss returns to Beloit, post-2003 shoulder injury... Streak information prior to Sunday's Beloit game: Burlington kept Snapper leadoff man Kennard Bibbs off-base last night, snapping his streak of reaching base safely at 37 games in a row, one shy of matching Buck Coats of Lansing for the longest such streak in the Midwest League this year. It was the sixth-longest streak in all the minor leagues. The Bees also held John Vandenberg hitless, ending his league-high 19-game hitting streak. Vandenberg did walk in the sixth and has reached base safely in 34 games, now the longest active streak in the league. -

Norfolk (Mets) 7, Indianapolis 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Norfolk Tides bounced back to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 7-4 at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon, as Norfolk first baseman Mike Glavine led the charge with a four-hit game. In the final meeting of the season between the two clubs, the win by Norfolk produced a split of both the two-game series, and knotted the season series at six games apiece. Tribe starter Pasqual Coco was roughed up early, allowing four runs in the top of the first inning as both Jeff Duncan and Glavine cranked two-run homers for the Tides. Glavine finished the game having reached base safely in all five of his plate attempts, going 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI. Indianapolis (55-72) came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first facing Tides starter Tyler Yates. Richard Paz and Jim Rushford reached base with one-out singles, and both runners scored on Pete Zoccolillo's two-run double to right field. Coco (9-8) surrendered another run in the top of the second inning when Esix Snead tripled to right field and scored on a balk charged to Coco which made the score 5-2. The balk was one of three charged to Coco on the afternoon, as the Tribe pitcher was called for a balk in the first, second, and third innings of the ballgame. Coco left having allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings. Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Indians loaded the bases against Yates. Yates then retired Ryan Knox and Paz on a pair of popups to the right side of the Norfolk infield. With two outs and the bases still loaded Rushford lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle scoring a pair to bring the Indians to within 5-4. Following Rushford's base hit, Jason Anderson was brought in to face Zoccolillo, who grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning. That was as close as the Indians would get, however, as the Tides added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings off Indians reliever Robert Marquez. In the sixth, Anderson led off the inning with a single to left and came around to score on Prentice Redman's RBI single. Russ Johnson walked leading off the seventh and scored on Dan Garcia's RBI single to make the score 7-4. Anderson (1-3) pitched 2.1 innings of hit-less relief to earn the victory for Norfolk. Orber Moreno picked his 11th save in a two-inning stint to end the game. The Indians open a three-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens on Monday evening when the teams play a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. at Victory Field. Ben Ford (3-3, 2.70) and Shane Nance (2-4, 1.49) are scheduled to start for Indianapolis against Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.12) and Gary Knotts (4-2, 4.08) for Toledo. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: 3-0 and a 5-INNING NO-NOSaturday night was Faith Night at Hank Aaron Stadium. A concert after the ball game featured the Christian group, 4HIM........ For Mobile's sake, they're going to need some of that ol' time religion. They're now five games in back of the Stars, they haven't been playing good defense lately, and they were just outscored in their last three games by Birmingham, 36-14.......The Stars, enjoying a hot month, tonight took advantage of the bumbling Bay Bears and won their fourth straight and ninth of their last twelve games. It was Shelley's show tonight........ Jason Shelley, the Stars' pitching engine with a reputation for pitching deep into ballgames (he threw 117 pitches tonight), threw five no-hit innings at the Bay Bears, before giving up a leadoff home run to Freddy Guzman........ At the plate, he produced the Stars' second run with a sacrifice fly, which turned out to be the go-ahead run, and struck out nine batters...... This refugee from the Frontier League does nothing but mesmerize Southern League hitters with his split-finger that just drops, inducing a lot of ground balls and frustrated attempts to meet the ball. After six starting appearances, he has major league numbers --- three wins (2 NDs that the Stars won), 45 strikeouts in 40 innings, nine walks and a 1.80 ERA...... On the other hand, there's also seven wild pitches and four hit batters, so I don't think he'll be mistaken for Curt Schilling, but for someone to jump from one of the lowest rungs of independent league baseball to Double-A, well, it's awesome. Chris Barnwell, on Chris Oxspring's first pitch, singled to right on a hit-and-run play in the 2nd that set up Shelley's sac fly........ Barney was named this year's Rocky award winner at the Booster Club's Farewell Banquet following Friday's game........ The Rocky award is named after a former Stars utility player, Rocky Coyle (Stars '85-'86), who was one of the most popular Stars ever to wear a uniform. Outside of wearing his Christian principles (he was active in speaking at local churches and that always plays well here), he always played well even though he wasn't an everyday player, and was a dangerous clutch hitter. He was the hero, as if it were scripted, in Game 5 of the 1985 Southern League Championship Series, with a 9th inning, two-run HR off Charlotte's Mark Leiter (yep, Al's brother and a futre Brewer) that gave the Stars a 5-3 victory........ Barnwell is a Rocky prototype and the Boosters got to know him well. He doesn't display any piety, but he plays in the spirit of this award --- described as one of the hardest on the club in taking defeat, he takes pride in a dirty uniform, is hard-nosed, 110%, always ready to come into a ballgame, and dangerous in the clutch (he's 4-for-9 w/3 RBI as a pinch-hitter), and has played three infield positions capably and even a couple of uneventful innings in left field..... Saturday night, he started at first base for the first time in his professional career. That's sacrifice. I'm told that he once came to Frank Kremblas saying that he would accept a demotion to High Desert during the time the Stars had Alejandro Machado and Richard Paz, a better on-base pct. player, to get the Stars through a July swoon. This wasn't a symbol of bitterness, but a symbol of sacrifice, for Barney truly wanted to see his teammates win........ The Boosters are in agreement that this award was well-deserved. Noochie Varner, who kicked off the Stars' first run, singled to start off the 4th. He was forced out at second by Barnwell, but Barney advanced to second on a single to right by Mike Kremblas....... Oxspring tried to pick him off as he advanced toward third. J.J. Furmaniak tried to get him in a rundown, but the fairly accurate throw got away from third baseman Bobby Scales. Barnwell scored the go-ahead run for the Stars, standing up......... The Stars picked up an insurance run they wouldn't need in the 7th on a two-out RBI single by Corey Hart. Dave Krynzel scored the run after drawing a walk....... Corey is now 7-for-12 with 3 doubles and 4 RBIs in his last three games, following a mini 1-for-14 slump. Krynzel's mystifying problems at the plate, however, go on, and his strikeouts are becoming prolific...... That shouldn't be a big surprise to the closest of observers. In 2001, he struck out 150 times, split between Beloit and High Desert and a year later, 130 times between High Desert and Huntsville. This year, he has 103....... After wearing the golden sombrero to put him over that milestone Friday night, he struck out again Saturday night, continuing a dubious streak of ten consecutive games in which he's struck out, the longest by anyone this season....... Since 1996, which is as far back as I can go for game-by-game strikeout records, 13 other players have had such a streak, some repeating......... T.R. Marcinczyk (A's organization) has the longest with 14 during the 1998 season........ Billy Hall, though he did not have a 10-game streak, struck out 11 times in 17 at-bats, shortly after he was promoted to Huntsville during the 2001 season (.647), the worst I could find in a series of games. With a 3-1 lead, Shelley got into a minor jam in the 8th inning. He walked the leadoff man, Freddy Guzman. Guzman then stole second, his 31st steal of the season........ Guzman is challenging Krynzel all of a sudden for the league leadership because Krinkles, who has 39, simply hasn't gotten on base often enough, but he'll have to get by Carolina's Billy Hall, who has 36.......... Guzman then reached third on a ground ball to first by Jake Gautreau....... Shelley struck out Mobile's goat, Bobby Scales, but he had to face the dangerous Jon Knott, 2nd among HR leaders in the league, but Knott popped up a 1-2 pitch to the right side of the infield. All that was left was for Mike Adams to finish it up. Adams fell behind 3-and-0, but got the last out on J.J. Furmaniak's fly out to Varner. The Stars are now seven games above .500 for the first time in the second half, and will look for their first five-game win streak of the season....... Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.14) will be the pitcher the Stars go to, against Mobile right-hander Duncan McAdoo (4-7, 4.53)........ A win will also make them 72-52 for the season. Their best record during the Stars' Milwaukee era is 75-63 in 2001. The all-time record finish of 82-61 was accomplished during the 1989 season. Daryl Clark is 1-for-7 since his return from High Desert and 2-for-23 going back to July 17......... Alejandro Machado, after a six-game .407 surge, is 2-for his last-18........ Noochie Varner is hitting .360 in his last six games. Since Richard Paz's departure, he's taken over as the club's leading contact hitter. In his last 58 ABs, he's struck out only six times and has just 40 Ks in 241 at-bats. That's a .166 percentage, almost as good as the .158 Paz left with........ Chris Barnwell is having his best month at the plate, hitting .323....... Mike Adams picked up his 13th save, the Stars best since Brian Mallette saved 17 during the 2001 season........ Corey Hart has moved into 5th place among the Southern League's top 10 batting leaders. Corey also leads the league in hits with 133 and RBIs with 87, ten up on Mobile's Jon Knott. Mobile 3rd baseman Rico Washington was promoted to Class AAA Portland Friday, and it looks like he won't be coming back. Portland lost Bernie Castro to a season-ending knee injury........ The club says Washington, who was leading Southern League 3rd basemen in fielding, won't be replaced. The Booster Club got better attendance from the players for Friday night's Farewell Banquet than Boosters themselves........ Among the attendees --- Frank Kremblas, Stan Kyles, Dave Krynzel, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Noochie Varner, Brandon Gemoll --- hell, nearly everybody........ Chris Barnwell was there to accept his award and Matt Parker was present to accept this year's "Eagle" award.......... The Eagle is a role model award that is given to some lucky pitcher for sportsmanship, civic interest, inspiration, team spirit, and just being an overall good guy. It's named after former pitcher Bob Bennett, a full-blooded Lakota Sioux whose Indian name was One Eagle. Bennett spent many off hours at schools promoting and educating kids on his American Indian heritage and was a 10-game winner for the Stars in their 1995 season. Where are they now?........ Mike Coolbaugh, who holds the Stars' season records for at-bats, total bases, and shares the RBI record with Terry Steinbach, is hitting .248 at Class AA-Round Rock (Tex.), the Astros' AA farm club....... Bobby Darula was released by the Reds, after hitting .300 in 13 games at Class AAA-Louisville (Int.)...... Jack Krawczyk (Stars '00-'02) is pitching for Class AA-El Paso (Tex.), the Diamondbacks' farm club.......Mike Nicolas, who went from the Bay Bears to the Stars for a day during a road series at Mobile, has signed with the Expos after being released by the Red Sox. The Brewers traded Nicolas to the Red Sox for Brian Adams, before he ever got a chance to pitch an inning for Huntsville........ Matt Hammons, released by the Stars on May 29, is with the Cardinals organization now, and pitching for a 45-80 Palm Beach club in the Class A-Florida State League, where he is 2-1 with 2 saves and a 1.26 ERA........
