  1. Saturday's Daily Menu : The parent Brewers will be long done for the day by the time you decide on making your audio choice. Will Brewerfan's "Batman" pull another Link Report all-nighter? * Time to make do with less in the kitchen and still cook a decent meal -- at least that's what Huntsville, and to a lesser extent, Indianapolis, are being asked to do. Indy is playing one man below the roster limit of 24, and Huntsville is playing down two, with only 22 healthy bodies. You can't raid Huntsville to fill Indy. High Desert's full at 25, but certainly there's a Maverick reliever available to help eat any garbage innings at AA. David Krynzel's in dire need of a day or two off, but the High Desert roster is already so devoid of true outfielders, it'd be tough to pull someone such as Chris Morris. So we wait, but don't necessarily look for any activity quite yet... We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well. All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... INDIANAPOLIS: A very tired Tribe squad limps home to face Norfolk (Mets) at 7:00 PM; LHP Nate Teut will be asked to go deep in this one... * Cute side note from Friday night: About 400 Girl Scouts were scheduled to have a sleep-over -- complete with a screening of the movie "Angels in the Outfield" -- on the Knights Stadium field following a doubleheader between the Charlotte Knights and the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night. As Game 1 wore on into the wee hours of the morning, the event -- if it came off at all -- seemed more likely to become an up-all-night affair. 3. Hey, Helena is now 36-20 on the season! Huntsville is 70 - 52 Beloit is 67 - 53 Yeah, yeah, not listing the other three farm teams for now (hey, no organization is winning across the board), but with the Brewers heading towards 100+ losses again, I just needed to re-assure myself that Brewerfan has been associated with some winning baseball this season. Just a reminder for fans who are new to the minor league scene this year, all the minor league regular seasons wrap up around Labor Day weekend, or in about two weeks.
  4. High Desert Site Game Summary: Just the fact that Tommy Marx has had a decent outing or two and was relatively successful here tonight really brings in to question Tim Blackwell's decision to replace him with position player Johnny Raburn after two walks in the extra-inning defeat earlier this week -- MassBrew Adelanto, CA - The Bakersfield Blaze took an early lead and never let go, defeating the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 11-4 on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium, in front of a sold-out crowd of 3,808. The loss is the fifth straight for the Mavs, who are now just 13-42 in the second half, and 38-87 overall. Mavs lefty Derrin Ebert (2-1), who had been outstanding in two prior appearances, was lit up for ten runs in five plus innings of work. He allowed three in the first and four in the third as the Blaze went up 7-0. Bakersfield hit three home runs in the third, as Edgar Gonzalez led off the frame with his fourth of the year for a 4-0 lead. Eric Reece followed with his 15th of the season. Two batters later, Luis Mateo hit his first of two on the night, giving the Blaze a 7-0 lead. The Mavs answered with three in the bottom of the third, cutting the Blaze lead to 7-3. Joel Alvarado led off with a single and scored as Ralph Santana?s RBI single was bobbled by Luis Mateo in left field. Scott Candelaria?s single plated Santana to make it 7-2. Jeremy Frost doubled to right, scoring Candy to make it 7-3. Blaze starter Jarrett Campbell settled down and didn?t allow any more damage from thereafter. Campbell (3-3) went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits He was relieved by Rob Cramer, who allowed just an unearned run in the seventh, as Santana?s single knocked in Alvarado, who reached on an error. The Blaze chased Ebert in the sixth by scoring three runs to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Tommy Marx came out of the Mavs pen and despite allowing two inherited runners to score, worked three scoreless innings of relief. Justin Backsmeyer allowed Mateo?s second homer of the night in the ninth, as the Blaze completed the scoring. The Mavs and Blaze continue their series on Saturday night, as Dan Hall (6-11) goes against Bakersfield?s Greg Dukeman (2-4). Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).
  5. As of post time Saturday AM, the only Huntsville summary comes from SportsTicker: HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (Ticker) -- Brandon Gemoll finished with two RBI and Corey Hart went 4-for-5 with three runs scored as the Huntsville Stars topped the Chattanooga Lookouts, 9-5. Gemoll capped the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Hart, who doubled and scored in the first inning, singled home a run in the sixth. J.J. Hardy had an RBI single and scored twice for Huntsville, which has won three in a row and eight of its last 11. Pedro Liriano (9-12) allowed five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in six innings for the win. Jeff Hundley yielded two hits and struck out three over three scoreless innings for his second save. Steve Smitherman connected on a two-run homer and scored twice for Chattanooga, which dropped to 6-17 vs. the Stars this season. Ty Howington (0-2) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and three hits with six walks in 2 1/3 innings for the loss.
  6. So the Indianapolis crew loses two, then has to drag themselves onto a plane for a flight home to Indy, where they'll play tonight. Charlotte is only four games out in their division, so I imagine the teams had to get in the game during this last scheduled meeting between the teams. But what about league rules concerning starting times? Local city ordinances? Apparently nothing stood in the way of this doubleheader's completion. Umpires, broadcasters, grounds crew, you name it -- indeed a marathon for all.
  7. Indianapolis Game Two Summary (SportsTicker): FORT MILL, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Jon Rauch recorded his first complete game of the year to lead the Charlotte Knights to a doubleheader sweep of the Indianapolis Indians, 5-1. Rauch (6-1) allowed a run and six hits, striking out four and walking three, for his fourth straight win. Jon Aceves highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a two-run double for Charlotte, which has won its last four home games. Aaron Miles, who had three hits and scored twice in the Knights' 18th-inning triumph in the first game, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Jason Conti opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning for Indianapolis, which fell to 5-10 in doubleheaders this season. David Manning (6-8) gave up all five runs, four hits and four walks in four innings for the loss.
  8. Indianapolis Site Game One Summary: Three (3!) more outfield assists for Jason Conti! FORT MILL, S.C. -- Ross Gload singled home Aaron Miles with an unearned run in the bottom of the 18th inning Friday night as the host Charlotte Knights defeated the Indianapolis Indians 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. The game, which ended at 12:37 EDT, was played in six hours 20 minutes and was just 17 minutes shy of becoming the longest game in Indians history. The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin after 1:00 a.m. EDT. Miles led off the 18th with a ground ball to first base that Jim Rushford misplayed. After going to second on a sacrifice by Tim Hummel, Miles came around with the winning run when Gload lined a single into right-center. The tough-luck loser was Derek Lee (1-3), the Tribe's sixth pitcher of the night. Lee worked 5 1/3 innings scattering four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Jake Meyer (1-2), the Knights' seventh hurler of the contest, earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief. For most of the night, the game was one that neither team seemed to want to win. After Charlotte tied the game at 3 in the fifth, both teams had numerous chances to claim the victory. The Indians left the bases loaded in the sixth, and had at least one runner on base in 11 of the final 12 innings. The Tribe hit into three double plays and had three runners caught stealing as they came up empty handed. The Knights put six runners into scoring position from the sixth inning on, but could not get the timely hit needed to end the game. The best opportunity came in the eighth when Ryan Hankins reached second on back-to-back errors by second baseman Rich Paz. With two outs, Scott Morgan singled to center field where Jason Conti scooped up the ball and fired a strike to Cody McKay at the plate to gun down Hankins and end the inning. The assist was Conti's third of the game, increasing his league-leading total to 19. Charlotte took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when the first five batters reached base safely. The runs snapped the scoreless innings streak of Tribe starter Luis Martinez at 28.1. Miles and Gload dropped down bunt singles on either side of a walk to Hummel to load the bases. Consecutive singles by Joe Borchard and Jamie Burke drove in two runs. The inning ended when Conti gunned down Gload at the plate for his first assist of the game. The Tribe stormed back in the fourth inning with three runs to take the lead. Conti led off with a single and scored on Rushford's ninth double of the season. Keith Luuloa followed with an RBI double to tie the game, and then scored when Pete Zoccolillo lined a single to right. Burke singled home Hummel in the fifth to tie the game. Conti came up big in the field again throwing out Borchard at third base as Hummel crossed the plate. Jayson Durocher, who joined the Indians Friday on a rehabilitation assignment from Milwaukee, pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Durocher is expected to rehab with the Indians through the end of the minor league season. While Martinez saw his scoreless streak snapped in his fifth Triple-A start, reliever Shane Nance turned in two shutout innings to extend his scoreless innings streak to 34.0.

  10. Derrin Ebert on the mound should make for a competitve contest tonight. In progress: Bakersfield (Devil Rays) 3, High Desert coming up, after one-half an inning... Oh well....

  12. Maybe because the timing allows you to catch the game from the start so often, I'm doing the "give High Desert some love" thing tonight. It really is amazing how the Mavericks have become a victim of the "we must keep Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena together mentality". I just keep reminding myself that no major league team has a successful affiliate at each level. Derrin Ebert on the mound should make for a competitve contest tonight. Has any team ever been put together with more former catchers? Jason Belcher, Froilan Villanueva, and Jeremy Frost's days behind the plate are a thing of the past. 18-year-old Charlie Lozada can catch, but also played third base in Arizona. Jeff Eure and Manny Ramirez will likely be added to the High Desert mix next year. So the catcher prospects who can hit can't catch, and vice versa. In other words, get that ankle well, Cap'n Lou.
  13. As folks sample the various minor league audio choices tonight, let me know if anyone has any luck pulling in the Helena at Ogden broadcast -- just getting dead air. Thanks.
  14. I hate this team right now. So simple yet so profound. Listless, lifeless, hopeless, hapless.
  15. I can't tell you how ridiculous it is that the print, audio, and TV media haven't called Melvin and Yost on the Royce Clayton fascination. Bill Hall is 23 years old! And even if you want to plug J.J. Hardy in as your starting SS as early as next April, there is no, absolutely no kind at all, of justification for having Hall collect a few pinch-hit appearances and nothing else, when he could be playing at Indy every day. This is Pittsburgh here folks, not a contending team. Oh wait, we can't afford to pay that first-player-in-the-draft bonus next year, can we? Well here's a news flash for you Doug -- there is no way this team escapes earning that #1 pick. It's a near certainty at this point. So take your Royce Clayton and you-know-what with him...
  16. BA's Daily Dish can't get enough of the Brewers lately... Signed out of the Dominican Republic at age 16, Brewers lefthander Luis Martinez has emerged from relative obscurity this year to become one of the system?s top arms. Martinez, 23, brought a 21-42, 5.97 career record into the season as he started out repeating Double-A Huntsville. He went 8-5, 2.58 with 116 strikeouts in 115 innings to earn a promotion to Indianapolis, where he put up 26 1/3 straight scoreless innings while fanning 28. At 6-foot-6, Martinez isn?t a fireballer, sitting in the 89-90 mph range while working his curveball in and out and using his outstanding changeup up and down in the zone. Brewers officials say he has matured and learned how to pitch, and was helped by the prospect-laden environment at Hunstville. ?He obviously got off to a great start,? Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said. ?He was the pitcher of the month for our organization and was considered for a major league callup. We didn?t bring him to Milwaukee, but we figured if he was a candidate for that, we could try him at Triple-A and see how he did. He?s been great.?
  17. Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday: TONIGHT: The Indians and Charlotte meet in a doubleheader for the final two head-to-head games of the season. The Tribe needs a sweep to finish with a split of the 12-game season series. The Tribe's only other trip to Knights Stadium this season came in April. A four-game sweep by Charlotte was part of a seven-game losing streak by the Indians. The Indians fared better against Charlotte when the teams met last weekend at Victory Field. The Indians were able to win two of three - both in extra innings. Tonight will be the Tribe's seventh doubleheader of the season. The Indians have won one, split two and lost three DHs. One of the sweeps was at the hands of the Knights on April 19. Since July 23, 17 of the Tribe's 22 games have come against opponents from the IL's South division. The Indians are 9-8 in these recent match-ups, but are still just 21-23 against South foes for the season. The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 13 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .239 and have scored 32 runs (2.46 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in eight of the 13 games. The Indians have played five extra-inning contests in August going 3-2 in those games. Three of the last six games have gone into extra frames with the Tribe winning all three. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez makes his fifth start for the Indians in game one, and will look to extend his 26.1 scoreless innings streak. Martinez has faced IL South teams in each of his four previous starts. His most recent trip to the mound came against Charlotte on August 8. He pitched in and out of trouble as he allowed three hits and four walks in six innings, but got several fine defensive plays behind him to keep his string of scoreless innings alive. Martinez did not get a decision in a 1-0 win. The Indians have scored just four runs in Martinez's last three starts (1.33 rpg), and only 10 runs in his four starts (2.5 rpg). Martinez has been involved in three straight shutout wins, and the opposition has plated only one run in the four games in which he has pitched. Martinez came up from Double-A Huntsville on July 24. With the Stars, he led the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and was fifth with eight wins and a 2.58 ERA. He started the season with 21 scoreless innings, and was the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April (3-1, 0.31 ERA). Righthander David Manning will pitch game two. In his 12th season of professional baseball, Manning made his Major League debut on Aug. 2 at Montreal. He took the loss allowing six earned runs in four innings. Manning also was hit hard in his second big league start on Aug. 9, and was sent back to the Indians where he started the season. Manning began the season in the Tribe bullpen with the final three of his six appearances coming against the Knights. He gave up three runs in 3.1 innings. Manning was moved into the rotation on May 2 and went 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA in his first six starts. His last start for the Indians came on July 28 against Durham. He snapped a personal three-game losing streak by limiting the Bulls to three runs in seven innings. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth with a .317 average and fifth with a .385 on-base percentage. Alex Delgado ranks second among IL catchers having thrown out 57.7% of would-be basestealers. SCORELESS INNINGS STREAKS: LHPs Luis Martinez and Shane Nance are boasting impressive scoreless innings streaks. Martinez, who was promoted from Double-A on July 24, has made four starts and has yet to allow a run in 26.1 innings. He has fanned 28 while walking 10. Nance, who has had two stints in Milwaukee this season, has not allowed a run since May 16. In 23 appearances since May 23, Nance has worked 32.0 scoreless innings. In that period he has allowed just 13 hits and five walks while striking out 24. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Saturday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Roach (5-8, 4.49) vs. LHP Nate Teut (2-5, 4.50) Sunday vs. Norfolk - RHP Tyler Yates (1-2, 2.93) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (9-7, 4.63)
  18. From the Indy Site: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a major league rehabilitation assignment. He is expected to pitch one inning tonight. Durocher made six one-inning appearances on rehab with the Indians in May going 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA. After just six games back with Milwaukee (2-0, 11.04), Durocher was placed on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. Beginning Aug. 10, he made two appearances for Rookie League Arizona retiring all six batters he faced.

  21. Manny Ramirez hit a huge ninth-inning HR for the Red Sox Thursday, but it's Helena's version that gets the national spotlight from SportsTicker: EMERGING PROSPECTS HELENA (PIO) 1B MANUEL RAMIREZ drove in five runs to lead the Brewers past the Provo Angels, 9-5. Ramirez, who hit .474 (9-for-19) with eight RBI in the four-game set with Provo, started his night with a run-scoring groundout in the top of the first inning. After walking in his second trip to the plate, he knocked in a run in the fifth to bring Helena within one run at 5-4. The 20-year-old, who posted six RBI in a contest on July 12, then capped a rally in the sixth with another double to plate a pair of go-ahead runs and added an RBI single in the eighth. A native of Venezuela, Ramirez is now batting .446 (37-for-83) on the road compared to .288 (17-for-59) at home. He currently ranks fourth in the Pioneer League with a .380 (54-for-142) batting average and leads all hitters with a .683 slugging percentage.

  23. Helena Game Story from the Provo Herald: "It's a deadly combination, they're the top hitting team in the league, so they're going to get on base. You can't walk 'em and you can't make errors, and we made four of them tonight. We haven't seen that type of speed this year." www.harktheherald.com/art...ad&order=0 Helena Box Score: This team is truly an offensive force to be reckoned with; you know I'll give a shout out when a Northeast-based prospect does well, as RHP Dan McKenna did last night... 25. High Desert Site Game Summary: Lancaster, CA -The Lancaster JetHawks completed a four-game sweep of the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday night, winning by a final of 4-3 at the Hangar in Lancaster. JetHawks starter Justin Wechsler (9-9) kept the Mavs off balance all night long. The right-hander allowed his only run of the night, a solo home run to Ralph Santana in the sixth to break up the shutout. Otherwise, the Mavs offense was ineffective, collecting just four hits in seven innings against Wechsler. Mavs starter Chris Saenz (8-9) was roughed up for three runs in the first frame, but settled down to allow just one more over his next five innings. Saenz struck out six in six innings and did not issue a walk. Only three of the four runs allowed by Saenz were earned. Marland Williams singled and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch to give the JetHawks a 1-0 first-inning lead. Dan Uggla's RBI triple to right made it 2-0. Uggla would score on an RBI single from Edgar Varela to make it 3-0 in the first. The only other run Saenz would allow, came in the fourth, as Danny Richar singled and scored on a triple by Dan Firlit. Santana's second homer of the year put the Mavs on the board in the sixth at 4-1. High Desert added two in the eighth, as Chris Morris doubled and scored on Jeremy Frost's RBI single, making it 4-2. With Santana at third and Frost at first, the Mavs executed the double steal to make it 4-3. However, with Frost at third, Froilan Villanueva grounded out to end the inning. Pete Sikaras recorded his third save in the four-game series, and league-leading 19th, by working the final 1.1 innings. Aaron Dean worked two scoreless innings of relief for the Mavs. The Mavs have now lost four in a row, but return home to Mavericks Stadium on Friday night to open up a three-game homestand against the Bakersfield Blaze. Derrin Ebert (2-0) throws for High Desert. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Mavericks Stadium.
