  2. From the SportsTicker / BA Daily Highlights: INDIANAPOLIS (INT) SS STEVE SCARBOROUGH connected on a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Indians over the Columbus Clippers, 6-4. After a hit batsmen and three straight singles gave Indianapolis its first run since the first inning, Scarborough took an offering by RHP SAM MARSONEK deep over the left field wall to end the contest. It marked just the fourth longball in 284 at-bats for Scarborough, who is now batting .429 (3-for-7) with 11 RBI this year when the bases are loaded. The outing was the third multi-hit performance in the last six games for the 25-year-old, who has notched seven of his 23 RBI over that span. It is hard to fathom what happened in April and May this year to Steve. This is a 25-year-old who hit .283 in the Southern League last year. He dug himself such an incredible hole this spring -- I'm psyched for him at least, that he's been more than respectable for a couple of months now. When I saw Scarborough play a few weeks ago, I couldn't get over how slight he is. The fact that he's powered 27 balls over the fence since 2001 speaks volumes to me about the gap ability and pop he's able to generate somehow. Keep it up, Steve.

  4. Tuesday's Daily Menu -- we'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit, and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish, and Helena's looking for a first-half title (their first-half ends Sunday, July 27th). All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco at home vs. Columbus (Yankees), 7:00 PM May we make an obvious roster move suggestion: With Bill Hall in Milwaukee (hopefully long-term, they don't need 13 pitchers), the Tribe only has three players available for 2B, SS, and 3B (Luuloa, Scarborough, Veras). Huntsville 2B Richard Paz has been sent to the bench with the arrival of young Alejandro Machado. Paz will be 26 years old next week, and his .399 OBP (.246 AVG, 58 BB's) should merit a utility role in Indianapolis, without disrupting the Huntsville championship drive. 6. High Desert 4, San Jose 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? David Nolasco turned in the best outing by a starting pitcher this year, holding the Giants to just one run in eight innings, as the High Desert Mavericks defeated the San Jose Giants by a final of 4-3 at Mavericks Stadium on Monday night. Nolasco (3-5) allowed one unearned run in a season-best eight innings, to help the Mavs end a two-game skid. He struck out five Giants without allowing a walk on the night. Brad Nelson?s two-run triple in the fifth off Giants starter Jeff Clark (0-1) gave the Mavs the lead for good at 2-0. High Desert extended the lead to 3-0 as Jason Belcher scored on a two-out double from Joel Alvarado. San Jose got their only run off Nolasco in the seventh to cut the Mavs? lead to 3-1. Dan Trumble hit a shot off of Nolasco?s glove with a man at first base. Nolasco tried to recover and ended up throwing the ball past Brad Nelson as Keith Anderson advanced to third. With runners at the corners, Nolasco got Bryan Carter to ground out to first for the second out, allowing the run to score. Angel Chavez flew out to center to end the Giants threat. The Mavs got that run back in the bottom of the seventh, as Jason Belcher picked up his second hit and his team-leading 54th RBI, knocking in Johnny Raburn with a two-out single. Justin Backsmeyer came on in the ninth to record his fourth save of the year, but had some difficulty. He allowed a lead-off double to Julio Cordido, who scored on an Anderson ground ball to make it 4-2. Dan Trumble?s ninth homer of the year cut it to 4-3, but Backsmeyer got Bryan Carter to pop up to end the ball game. With the win, High Desert improves to 1-3 against the Giants this year. They look to make it two straight as they face the Giants in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at Mavericks Stadium. Tommy Marx (0-0) makes his first start of the year for the Mavs while Julio Pavon (2-3) throws for the Giants. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: RHP David Nolasco is 24 years old -- he was the Brewers' 23rd round pick in 2001out of a California community college; SS Ozzie Chavez with two doubles -- his bat is showing signs of life... 10. Let's see, the Billings announcer has made sure that we know that Helena LH closer Dana Eveland is listed at 230 pounds, but is "230+". Later, he says Eveland reminds him of "the lead singer of Blues Traveler, that guy with the harmonica, Ok, maybe not that big". I know that Eveland has been described as having a David Wells body-type... Hey, as long as he keeps dominating... Helena's up big late, with Billings imploding on defense; the Brewers need to rally here if Lou Palmisano is going to get another chance to extend his hitting streak...

Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis shortstop Steve Scarborough picked the right time to connect on his team's first extra-base hit of the ballgame, as he walloped a walk-off, grand slam homer off Columbus' Sam Marsonek to lead the Tribe to a 6-4 defeat of the Clippers at Victory Field on Monday night. Trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tribe had been held without a hit since Jim Rushford's leadoff single in the bottom of the third inning by Columbus starter Christian Parker and reliever Tim Adkins. After retiring Mark Smith to open the bottom of the ninth, Marsonek plunked Doug Jennings before allowing back-to-back singles to Keith Luuloa and Pete Zoccolillo to load the bases for Tribe pinch hitter Cody McKay. McKay ripped a single to center field off Marsonek, scoring Jennings with the Indians second run of the game, while also leaving the bases loaded for Scarborough. Scarborough's fourth homer of the season was the third game-winner hit at Victory Field this season, with the previous two coming off the bat of Zoccolillo in extra inning affairs. It was the first four-RBI day of Scarborough's Triple-A career. Jason Childers (2-3) earned the win for Indianapolis courtesy of his perfect inning of relief in the top half of the ninth. Nate Teut started for the Indians and pitched six innings allowing five hits and four runs, including a one-out, three-run home run to Fernando Seguignol, his sixth against the Tribe this season, in the top of the first inning. Roberto Giron and John Foster each threw a perfect inning of relief for the Indians. Following the Seguignol homer, the Indians scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning when Smith singled home Wilton Veras with a blooper to right field off Parker. The Tribe and Clippers will conclude the brief two-game series on Tuesday night when righthander Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.53) faces off with Columbus' lefty Brandon Claussen (2-1, 2.17) at 7:00 p.m. The Tribe will then travel to Richmond for a two-game series followed by four games in Durham before returning home to Victory Field on Tuesday, July 29 to face the Richmond Braves. 13. Well what ever happend to wgez 1400 am Beloit? To return to this subject for a moment, the Snappers are no longer broadcast at all, either on radio waves or the internet. While you can certainly take in opponent's audio (I'm listening to the Billings' audio of the Helena game while typing), you can't compare listening to Brewer farm team audio. With opponents' audio, you don't get any of the side stories from the chats on the bus, the tidbits from the coaches, all the pre-game and post-game interviews that we now get with announcers geared up for the Brewer perspective. And believe me, that's a lot. If it's a close and entertaining game, opponent's audio is passable. Otherwise, it's brutal. But we are very lucky to have Robert Portnoy in Huntsville and Mike Lindskog in High Desert. Old pro Howard Kellman is very good with Indy, and I think a lot of folks will find that out next year when there should be heightened interest in checking out Indianapolis broadcasts. By the way, someone passed on the following thought to me once regarding Beloit audio: It's disappointing that they don't at least put the games on the Internet, especially since it doesn't really cost anything to do that and they could find someone very easily. Of course there is the extra hotel room, meal money, and small salary. There's no doubt that any college broadcaster would jump at the opportunity to get resume tapes by spending a season with the Snappers. You might get a different announcer each year, but it'd be worth it to all involved, even if the Snappers only chose to broadcast home games. Hopefully if we remind the Snapper front office often enough, we'll be all set for the 2004 season http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif . Helena does broadcast, but the radio station doesn't netcast, and we'd love to see that resolved as well.
  14. Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday: TONIGHT: The Indians return to Victory Field for their only two home games in a 17-day period. The Indians were on the road for six games, and had the three-day All-Star Break prior to this series. They go back on the road for six games after this series. The Indians went 1-3 on the trip to Rochester. Three of the four games were decided by one run. Yesterday's game had a two-run margin. The Indians welcome Columbus to Victory Field for the first time since April 26-27 when the teams split at two-game series. The teams had also split the opening four-game series of the season. The Tribe visited Cooper Stadium on July 2 and 3 losing 8-7 and 14-10. After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are 4-13 in July. The team is hitting .268, but the pitching staff has a 5.05 ERA. Six of the 13 losses have been by one run, while another four of the setbacks have been by two runs. ROSTER MOVE: Milwaukee has recalled infielder Bill Hall after placing lefthanded pitcher Matt Ford on the disabled list with a strained left elbow. Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and went 47-for-139 (.338) with 29 runs scored, 15 doubles, two home runs, 11 walks and six stolen bases in 33 games. Hall, who had two eight-game hitting streaks in June, has a season-long, 13-game streak. During the streak, which began July 6, Hall is 21-for-57 (.368) with 12 R, 7 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 3 BB and 2 SB. YESTERDAY: Rochester won the series finale 5-3. The Red Wings scored all five runs in the fourth inning as they sent 10 men to the plate. Doug Davis took the loss in his Tribe debut. Other than the fourth, Davis allowed just two hits in the other six innings on the mound. The top four hitters in the Tribe lineup - Hall, Jason Conti, Jim Rushford and Mark Smith - each had two hits. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut will make his seventh start and 12th appearance for the Indians. Teut has not faced the Clippers this season. He was with Albuquerque and Iowa in the PCL when the teams met in April, and he did not appear during the two-game series at Columbus earlier this month. Teut earned the win in his most-recent start. He faced Norfolk on July 10 at Victory Field and allowed five runs in a season-high 7.0 innings. Teut has a 2.70 ERA through the first six innings. ALL-STAR SELECTION: Outfielder Mark Smith represented the Indians at the Triple-A All-Star Game last Wednesday night. Smith pinch hit for Louisville's Brandon Larson in the fifth and drew a walk. He came around to score as the IL took a 7-6 lead. Smith singled in the sixth and drew another walk in the seventh before striking out in the ninth. Smith was also an IL All-Star with Rochester in 1993 and 1995. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Bill Hall is third in the IL with 57 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 50 bases on balls. HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 57 games Jim Rushford is hitting .340 (73-for-215). Since May 19, Rushford has not gone more than two games without getting a hit. In 20 games since June 21, Cody McKay is hitting .403 (25-for-62). Jason Conti brings a personal-best, seven-game hitting streak into tonight's game. THE IOWA CONNECTION: The Tribe pitching staff features three hurlers from the Hawkeye state. Ben Ford and Wes Obermueller were both born in Cedar Rapids while Nate Teut was born in Newton. Ford, the eldest of the group by seven months, attended Indian Hills Community College while Teut and Obermueller, separated by nine months, pitched for rivals Iowa State and the University of Iowa, respectively. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Tuesday vs. Columbus - LHP Brandon Claussen (2-1, 2.17) vs. RHP Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.53) Wednesday at Richmond - RHP David Manning (5-6, 4.39) vs. RHP Chris Fussell (7-9, 4.28) Thursday at Richmond - RHP Wes Obermueller (0-2, 4.70) vs. LHP Sam McConnell (4-1, 2.89)
  15. Well, no one from Brewerfan.net has sat down with Reid Nichols since his hire, nor have we attempted to coordinate a visit quite yet. We wished him well upon his hiring. It certainly made sense to let him get settled in, which surely must have happened by now. Hopefully down the road we'll get a chance to chat with him, and allow us to get to know more about his philosophies in player development. So it might be unfair or unwise to allow a single article to cloud one's judgment of his long-term ability to guide the farm system. But this article should at least stir up some water cooler discussion at Miller Park Tuesday morning: From Saturday's Victor Valley Daily Press in Victorville / Adelanto: Milwaukee's Giving Mavs Cold Shoulderby Michael Rothstein Staff Writer When the new Milwaukee Brewers front office entered after the 2002 season, the majority of personal connections between the Brewers and High Desert Mavericks disappeared. This is according to High Desert General Manager Brent Miles, who held this capacity during both Greg Riddoch's days as Milwaukee's Director of Player Development and now for the tenure of Reid Nichols' stay. "We value relationships and are big on relationships," Miles said. "We want to be with an affiliate who we have a good, solid relationship. We definitely had that with the old regime. "I'm not going to say that there is no chance that we can never have that with the new regime but currently we don't have the kind of relationship we had with the Brewers in the past." Miles said the one person who he keeps in constant contact with is Assistant Director of Player Development Scott Martens. Martens was a holdover from the Riddoch era in Milwaukee. Miles also said the Maverick front office had a solid relationship with Administrator of Baseball Operations Kate Geenen, but Geenen left Milwaukee mid-season. "We have a great relationship with Scott," Miles said, "but from there on out you can say that our relationship is non-existent with the farm director." When Nichols was in High Desert in early July, he failed to speak with Miles or anyone else in the front office. The Mavericks don't expect to receive talent to win California League championships yearly, Miles said. They do expect, though, to remain competitive. With a 5-22 record in the second half and a 30-67 mark overall, the opposite occurred. The Mavericks have no say in which players they receive and barring a miracle, High Desert will finish under .500 in five of the six halves as a Milwaukee affiliate. "Obviously the last three halves, it shows we haven't been competitive," Miles said. "That's not there and that is frustrating."
  16. Good news and bad news from Maryvale... The good news is that a long-time previously unknown friend of the Link Report (no, not associated with the Brewers) with super-secret access powers helped us locate an Arizona box score from Sunday. Thank you! The bad news is that the wire services were incorrect with their initial score. The Brewer kids lost 12-8, not won 12-8 as previously mentioned. 17. Again from SportsTicker: Beloit (MIL) first baseman Prince Fielder has hit .340 with 14 homers and 52 RBI since the beginning of June and is making a serious triple crown run in the Midwest League. Through July 17, the 19-year-old Fielder was leading the circuit with 22 home runs and 81 RBI - 21 more than his closest competitor. His .312 average was good for third, 10 points off the leader. Unlike his father, Cecil, Fielder has steered clear of high strikeout totals. He has fanned just 57 times in 346 at-bats while drawing 54 walks this season. Last year, he had 47 walks and 54 strikeouts while splitting time between the Pioneer and Midwest Leagues.

  20. Here's that national recognition we hinted at last night, care of SportsTicker / Baseball America: HUNTSVILLE (SOU) RHP JASON SHELLEY tossed a shutout and struck out 10 batters in his Class AA debut to help the Stars sweep a doubleheader from the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 1-0. Shelley allowed three singles, did not issue a walk, and recorded at least one strikeout in six of seven innings to earn the win. The 26-year-old Illinois native threw just 87 pitches to earn the win, retiring nine straight between the second and fifth innings and setting down seven in a row to close out Huntsville's third complete game. In Huntsville's 10-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, LHP JEFF HOUSMAN, who was recently recalled from the lower level Class A Midwest League, tossed 62 pitches over six scoreless innings to earn the win in his Class AA debut. A 33rd-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2002 draft, Housman yielded just one hit, issued a pair of walks, and induced 12 groundouts for the win. In 20 appearances with Beloit this season, the 6'3" southpaw recorded a 1.81 ERA and held opponents to a .231 batting average before skipping a minor-league level to join Huntsville. HELENA (PIO) C LOU PALMISANO stretched his hitting streak to 23 games with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning as the Brewers fell to the Billings Mustangs, 10-3. Palmisano, who has driven in at least one run in 12 games during the streak, now has sole possession of the fourth longest hitting streak in minor league baseball this summer. The New York native holds a .449 (40-for-89) mark during the streak and ranked in the top three in the Pioneer League in five major offensive categories heading into the contest. By the way, Cap'n Lou is still chasing a Pioneer League opponent: GREAT FALLS (PIO) OF RICARDO NANITA extended his hitting streak to a professional baseball-leading 30 games, but the White Sox fell to the Missoula Osprey, 5-4. After failing to record a hit in his first two at-bats, the 2003 Chicago White Sox draft pick singled to center field and came around to score on a home run by SS MICHAEL MEYERS. With the base hit, Nanita has surpassed OF FELIX JOSE of the Mexican Summer League for the longest hitting streak in the professional ranks this summer. Recording just one hit in seven of his last eight games, the first-year pro has produced a .294 (10-for-35) over these eight games to drop his season average 29 points to .390. With a hit in his next game, Nanita will match Kevin Hoopers' 31 game hitting streak in the 2002 season for the second longest in the National Association this century.
  21. That's true, but you still can't beat the perspective that a home team announcer can provide. I'm sure Jeff Housman's family appreciated Robert Portnoy's Huntsville call on Sunday...
  22. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: In the top of the sixth, catcher Brian Foster was clocked in the head by Dustin Delucchi's bat trying to throw out Chris Collins. High Desert Manager Tim Blackwell said Foster was feeling disoriented after he was hit. Following the game, Foster had swelling around his right eye. Foster's been beaten a bit this year, previously being hit in the head and the hand. Full story, tons of quotes and analysis, plus additional "note" info: www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...3106,3764, Blackwell said Danny Stout will come out of the bullpen. Huh? That seems a bit odd, given Stout's recent Central League success...
