Thanks again to everyone for contributing to the Link Report again tonight! It took a little while, but this is exactly how we envisioned the "Report" taking shape. Promote the heck out of the minor league kids -- make it convenient for everyone to locate their game broadcasts -- and share the fun! We're thrilled that things have evolved the way they have -- heck, many of you now know how to post the box scores properly now! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The San Jose Giants took the final two games of the four-game series with the High Desert Mavericks, winning the finale at Mavericks Stadium by a final score of 8-3 on Thursday night. The loss is the second straight for the Mavs, as they fall to 7-26 in the second half, and 32-71 overall. The Giants? offense got out to an 8-0 lead for starting pitcher Chris Begg, who was nearly flawless on the night. Begg benefited from good San Jose defense, holding the Mavs to just one run on three hits in eight innings of work. Begg?s only mistake came to Brian Foster in the eighth inning. Foster crushed a pitch down the left field line, for his team-leading 15th home run of the year, and third in his last three games. Begg (2-0) struck out six without walking a batter in earning his second win since leaving the Independent Northern League and signing with the Giants. Dan Trumble?s two-run homer in the second put the Giants ahead to stay. The Giants made it 4-0 against Mavs starter Chad Petty in the fourth. Derin McMains homered and Branden Florence also drove in a run with an RBI single, as the Giants chased Petty (0-7) after throwing 90 pitches in only four innings. The Giants added three in the fifth off Mavs reliever Aaron Dean to go up 7-0. Justin Knoedler had a solo shot to lead the effort. They completed their scoring, picking up one more against Dean in the sixth, as McMains capped a three-RBI night with a sac fly. Trailing 8-1 in the ninth, High Desert?s Daryl Clark crushed a two-run home run to right field off Giants? reliever Jackson Markert. For Clark, it?s his 13th homer of the year in a Mavs uniform and 15th overall. Clark appeared in his first game since May 9th when he and catcher Kade Johnson were promoted to AA Huntsville. Clark finished the night with two of the Mavs four base hits. Jeff Hundley and Tony Stavros were excellent out of the Mavs bullpen, holding San Jose scoreless for a combined 3.2 innings. The Mavs hit the road to Rancho Cucamonga in the first of ten straight road games on Friday night. Chris Saenz will go for the Mavs in the first of three at the Epicenter. Game time on Friday night is 7:15 (9:15 Central). High Desert Line Score: CAL FINAL R H E - - - SAN JOSE 8 13 1 HIGH DESERT 3 4 2

Indy Site Game Summary: Wonder if his new teammates enjoyed Martinez' "attempts" to hit http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ; what a night for Steve Scarborough -- heck, what a week! RICHMOND, VA -- Luis Martinez earned the win in his first career Triple-A start as the visiting Indianapolis Indians defeated the Richmond Braves 6-1 on Thursday night. The Indians offense came through with three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings as Steve Scarborough and Pete Zoccolillo each blasted home runs for the Tribe. Martinez, promoted from Double-A Huntsville earlier in the day, struck out six over 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, scattering seven hits. Martinez (1-0) struck out two batters in the first, third, and fourth innings before giving way to the Tribe bullpen with one out in the seventh inning. Scarborough, meanwhile, had a monster game reaching safely in each of his first four trips to the plate. Scarborough finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, and a back-breaking three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning that gave the Tribe a 6-0 lead. Richmond's Chris Fussell (7-10) cruised through the Indians lineup to open the game, matching Martinez zero for zero while allowing only four Tribe hits through six innings. Fussell's luck changed quickly in the top of the seventh inning when Keith Luuloa's one-out bloop single to right was followed by Zoccolillo's eighth home run of the season as the Indians broke open the scoreless tie. Scarborough scored the Tribe's third run of the inning on an RBI single by Ryan Knox. John Foster relieved Martinez with one out in the bottom of the seventh and pitched 1.1 innings for Indianapolis striking out two and walking one. Ben Ford, who pitched the final out of the eighth inning in relief of Foster, allowed one run in the bottom of the ninth on a double and two infield singles before striking out Wilson Betemit for the final out of the ballgame. The Indians (45-58 ) will travel to Durham on Friday to open a four-game series with the Bulls before returning to Victory Field on Tuesday to open an eight-game homestand. Lefthander Doug Davis (0-1, 6.43) will start Friday night for the Tribe against Bartolome Fortunato (1-1, 3.57) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday: No Wes Obermueller in the projected rotation -- we've identified Milwaukee's new fifth starter... TONIGHT: The Indians continue a six-game road trip with the final game of the season at Richmond. The Indians have had only two home games since July 12, and are 1-6 in seven road contests during that period. After this trip, however, the Indians will be home on 11 of the next 13 dates, and will finish the season at Victory Field on 21 of the final 34 dates. The first two games of this trip take the Indians back to The Diamond in Richmond for the first time since May 1-4. The teams alternated wins and losses in that four-game set. The teams also split four games in Indianapolis June 28-July 1. The Tribe won the first two games of that series, but dropped the last two, and have now lost three straight to the R-Braves. KEEPING IT CLOSE: After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are 6-14 in July. The team is hitting .273, and the pitching staff has a 5.07 ERA. Of the Tribe's 20 games in July, nine have been decided by one run (3-6) while five have been decided by two runs (1-4). Since July 13, seven of eight games have been decided by two runs or less (3-4). ROSTER MOVE: LHP Luis Martinez has been promoted from Double-A Huntsville and will start tonight's game. YESTERDAY: Richmond scored in six of the eight innings in which they batted as they cruised to an 8-4 win. Donzell McDonald and Adam LaRoche each had three hits while Wilson Betemit knocked in three runs. The Tribe got a two-run homer from Cody McKay. Ryan Knox had three hits. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Luis Martinez makes his Triple-A debut tonight after being promoted from Double-A Huntsville earlier in the day. Martinez leads the Southern League with 116 strikeouts and 54 walks, and ranks fifth with eight wins and a 2.58 ERA. Martinez started the season with 21 scoreless innings before allowing an unearned run midway through his fourth start. He was honored as the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April after he went 3-1 with a 0.31 ERA and 38 strikeouts in five starts. His last start came on Saturday against West Tennessee. Martinez took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in 6.0 innings. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Bill Hall is third in the IL with 57 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 53 bases on balls. Roberto Giron is tied for fifth with 14 saves. Jim Rushford is 15 plate appearances short of qualifying for the league leaders in hitting. His .332 mark would rank second. HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 60 games Jim Rushford is hitting .345 (78-for-226). Since May 19, Rushford has not gone more than two games without getting a hit. In 23 games since June 21, Cody McKay is hitting .380 (27-for-71). Jason Conti and Mark Smith, who each had eight-game hitting streaks coming into the series, both saw their streaks snapped last night when they made outs while pinch hitting. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Friday at Durham - LHP Doug Davis (0-1, 6.43) vs. RHP Bartolome Fortunato (1-1, 3.57) Saturday at Durham - LHP Nate Teut (2-3, 3.67) vs. RHP Doug Waechter (0-1, 2.51) Sunday at Durham - RHP Pasqual Coco (8-5, 4.49) vs. RHP Delvin James (3-6, 4.19) Monday at Durham - RHP David Manning (5-7, 4.70) vs. RHP Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67)

From Baseball America's Daily Dish: The Brewers promoted Brad Nelson, No. 2 on the Scouting Department's first base minor league rankings, to Double-A Huntsville after he hit .311-1-18 at Class A High Desert. He broke the hamate bone in his right wrist earlier this season causing him to miss two months, and it's sapped his ability to drive the ball. The Brewers now boast one of the most impressive prospect lineups in the minors with Nelson joining shortstop J.J. Hardy, third baseman Corey Hart and outfielder Dave Krynzel. The pitching staff, which featured four of the system's best arms in Mike Jones, Ben Hendrickson, Luis Martinez and the injured Ben Diggins, lost Martinez to a Triple-A promotion. Martinez revitalized his career after going 8-8, 5.20 in Huntsville last year. He refined his delivery and improved his command, fanning 116 in 115 innings this time through the Southern League.

ESPN's John Sickels weighed in on the minor league prospects dealt thus far this month: Alejandro Machado, INF (Royals to Brewers in Curtis Leskanic trade)Machado, from Venezuela, was originally a Braves prospect, but was traded to the Royals in '01 for Rey Sanchez. Just 21, he is a slick-fielding middle infielder who can handle second base and shortstop. He was hitting .286 at Double-A Wichita, but doesn't have much power, and the Royals no longer projected him as a future regular. His glove and ability to hit for average should get him a bench job eventually. Wes Obermueller, RHP (Royals to Brewers in Leskanic trade)The Royals drafted Obermueller in the second round in 1999 from the University of Iowa. Arm injuries cost him much of the '00 and '01 campaigns, reduced his velocity, and slowed his development. He still has a 90 mph fastball and a good slider, but has problems with consistency and command. Used as a starter for the most part so far, he is probably better-suited for a middle relief role.

July Transactions; Latest: OF Ryan Knox back to AA
MassBrew replied to MassBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
As mentioned elsewhere on the forums here this morning, LHP Luis Martinez and middle infielder Rich Paz have been transferred to the Indianapolis roster. We believe Indy will have to make a move with one player in some manner today -- to Milwaukee? to Huntsville? We'll see... As for Martinez, the kid who was signed as a 16-year-old in October of 1996 and lost his first 18 pro decision (yes, you read that right), rewards the Brewers' faith in him with a fine AA campaign and a spot on the AAA roster in this, his second "40-man roster" option season. The Brewers can move him up and down right through 2004, if they wish, without worrying about waivers. -
