As we follow the various independent league transaction wires for Brewerfan, we can guarantee you that the Brewers have been the most active organization in major league baseball in terms of signing independent leaguers for this season. While you can say that indicates there was a lack of depth in the system coming in to the 2003 season, we prefer to applaud the Brewers for taking a pro-active stance in seeking diamonds in the rough. In fact, while there were definitely some misses among the 2003 signees, there have absolutely been some "hits" as well. All the signings will be reviewed for you later today. Here's the latest, from the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger: Right-hander Danny Stout, who started the Central Baseball League All-Star Game last week, was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers from the Jackson Senators of the and assigned to their Class A High Desert team in the California League. Southern Miss alumnus Stout was 4-2 with a 1.50 ERA and 4 saves, having worked as both a starter and closer for the Sens. Stout is 6'0", 190, and is 25 years old (2/16/78), was born in Columbus, Ohio, and now resides in Pensacola, FL. Stout began his independent pro career in 2001, posting a 4.88 ERA in 83.0 IP (36 games, 5 starts). He turned the corner in 2002 with Alexandria of the Central League, when he worked as a closer, flashing a 1.95 ERA in 50.2 IP (18 saves). That season included an impressive scoreless streak of 33.2 innings. 2003's numbers are very good, as linked here. You might think that Stout will get a chance to start for the Mavs, but we'll see about that. In his last five starts, Stout has allowed only 18 hits in 35 innings, striking out 32 in that span. Here's hoping he'll be High Desert's version of Jason Shelley. RHP Dan Stout 2003 Statistics: www.baseballamerica.com/c...stout%2C+d Stout's career pitching numbers have been forwarded to squarepusher. His Brewerfan player bio page will be available later today / tonight. We believe the Mavericks had an open spot on their roster; at this moment, we don't anticipate a corresponding move. -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: News on Corey Hart is very encouraging! WHAT DO YOU DO FOR AN ENCORE?The last and only time two Huntsville pitchers made their debut in a double-header, it was August 5, 2001 at Joe Davis Stadium....... The debuts of Andy High and Bobby Sismundo were nothing like what over 3,200 fans saw Sunday evening, starting under a broiling 94° sun. Jeff Housman, like Mike Jones, making the big leap from Beloit to Huntsville, compares favorably on observation, to Derek Lee....... His fastball is only 86-88. He has an effective change-up and he can hit the spots real well. Whatever he has, he gets it on the ground. 12 of his 18 outs were hit on the ground....... His pitches weren't blazing, but his Double-A debut was. After issuing a leadoff walk in the game to Ryan Theriot, Housman retired 10 straight hitters until Brendan Harris hit a 2-1 pitch down the right field line with one out for a shallow bloop hit in the 4th inning, the only hit he would give up........ Housman allowed only one more baserunner --- a walk on five pitches to Theriot in the 6th inning........ He left a 10-0 lead in the hands of Matt Parker, after throwing 63 pitches, 37 for strikes. The defense behind Housman, who must of thought, hey --- if this is all there is to Double-A, I'm on Easy Street, was nothing short of extraordinary....... But the plain fact is, Housman had extraordinary defense behind him tonight.......... I had stars on my scorebook next to six plays on the Stars side from the 2nd to the 5th inning....... Corey Hart made a long throw from deep behind third base in foul territory on a sharply hit grounder by Mike Dzurilla in the 2nd inning, a throw --- dare I say it --- reminded me of Brooks Robinson in the 1970 World Series vs. Cincinnati. It was as strong and beautiful as you'll ever see......... And just to bring it up, Corey's defense improves leaps and bounds day by day. Where his throwing errors were once of major concern to his defense, he has worked on that part of his game ferociously. Corey has not made a single error in all of July and made only four in June........ In April and May combined, he made 14. I rest my case for Corey Hart's defense. Alejandro Machado made a nice throw out from deep on the grass in the 3rd inning. That was followed by a defensive gem by J.J. Hardy, who ranged in front of the bag at 2nd base between the mound to get the pitcher, and then another from behind the bag on the grass, making an awkward, but strong sidearm throw to get the Theriot (all in all, 8 assists for J.J. in the 1st game)..... In the 5th, Dave Krynzel utilized his speed as he went back to the track to make an over-the-shoulder backhand catch on a well-hit ball by Matt Creighton. After a debut like that, how do you follow that? Well, Jason Shelley did, and when I give my presentation of the Top Ten games of the season at the Booster Club End-of-Season banquet, it's going to be Shelley's game # 1, and Housman's # 2. Shelley, like Derek Lee at Huntsville, had nothing more to prove in the Frontier League....... He was just 65 strikeouts short of the league record when he was signed by Milwaukee a couple of days ago. He was the ERA and strikeout leader going on two straight seasons, and he had a season-high 14 this year...... League hitters had just a .190 average against him in 10 starts, and in July, he had a 0.41 ERA in 3 starts, giving up just one earned run in 22 innings....... Like I say, there was nothing more to prove. Bleached blonde, and wearing pants just a little too large for his 6'2" 190 lb. frame, Shelley showed off a very serious splitter, which just drops off the table. He used it to strike out 10 hitters, including one that had reached first on a wild pitch in the 5th inning, short of a record for a Stars pitcher making his debut......... He gave up a two-out hit in the 2nd inning to Jackson Melian, a ball hit down the third base line, that Hart wisely held onto. Hardy got him out of the inning with a beautiful over-the-shoulder catch on a pop-up deep on the grass behind 2nd base, with Krynzel coming on like a train. Hardy ho-hummed it like it was routine........ That was the first of nine consecutive outs before first baseman Donnie Hood, playing in only his 10th game, singled to center. Lukas McKnight followed with a single to right, and with a 1-0 lead, Shelley faced his first jam........ Shelley struck out Matt Creighton swinging, but his pitch was ruled a wild pitch, low to Mike Kremblas, although it looked at first like he let it go by. That moved Hood to third and McKnight to 2nd, but on the first pitch to Aron Weston, Kremblas threw down to third and caught Weston in a rundown that went 2-5-2-6 for the final out of the inning --- a big break for the Stars........ Shelley finished the 6th and 7th innings, retiring all six batters he faced. Unlike game one, the Stars had trouble with Felix Sanchez, who the Cubs see as closer material, making his second start, his first since coming off the disabled list........ Sanchez owns a fastball that topped out at 97 mph at Lansing, and an occasional change. He was 93-96 on the gun tonight....... The Stars couldn't touch him, as five of the first hitters grounded out. In the 3rd, Chris Barnwell finally hit one up the middle for a single, but Shelley couldn't bunt him over, as he struck out, and Richard Paz, now in a 1-for-21 funk, grounded out to Dzurilla. But Sanchez proved to be his own undoing in the 4th. Krynzel laid a bunt down in front of him, and in his hurry to pick up the ball, Sanchez couldn't find the handle on it and the speedy Krynzel was on first........ On a 1-0 pitch to Hardy, he swiped second base, his 33rd stolen base of the season, 46 now as a Huntsville Star, 12th on the Stars' all-time list. Hardy grounded to second, moving Krynzel to third........ Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson decided to save Sanchez for another day, and brought in Jason Szuminski......... A fly ball would have brought him home, but Ryan Gripp was called out on a strike three ball by Szuminski that looked low and inside........ Brandon Gemoll, the hottest hitter currently on the club, hitting .391 in his last 13 games, came through with the game-winning hit, hitting the 0-1 pitch from Sanchez high over the mound and through the middle between the outstretched gloves on Dzurilla and Josh Arteaga......... On the first pitch to D.J. Clark, Gemoll swiped second, but was called back to first by umpire Jeff Spisak, who ruled that Clark's backswing had interfered with McKnight's throw. (Had Clark's forward swing interfered, or his movement in such a way blocking the catcher's throw, it would have been ruled batter's interference, and Clark would have been out.)....... Gemoll wasn't going to let that defeat him. On the next pitch, he took off again, and on a high throw that was backed up in the outfield, had a stolen base easily......... Kremblas struck out, however, to end the inning........ Szuminski and David Cash retired the side in the 5th and 6th. Shelley, with the reduced crowd clapping in time, got two strikes on Jackson Melian, and a foul in back of the plate, before getting him to lift a foul pop on the third base that Barnwell squeezed for the final out....... Shelley's threw 89 pitches for the complete game victory, 61 for strikes (68.5%). His debut ranks as one of the Stars' all-time best. In fact, you'd have to go back to August 15, 1985 to find a Stars pitcher who debuted with a complete game shutout. Todd Burns did it against Memphis, pitching a 5-0 four-hitter. Shelley's debut also rivals that of Steve Karsay, who struck out a club-record 13 hitters in 9 innings in his debut on August 6, 1993. The Stars won that game in the10th, 5-4......... I'm sure Brewer fans everywhere were hoping for the best as these two pitchers took the mound for Huntsville this evening, and I think they exceeded everyone's expectations. There is a list of what I found were the greatest pitching debuts by a starter for Huntsville since 1985. Just go to the scores and scroll down (Ben Diggins' debut is among those listed): www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html The Stars are off Monday, waiting for the Tennessee Smokies, who lost, 2-1 on a 9th inning hit by Tommy Nicholson. Fans will see Bucky Jacobsen once again, and another former Star, Scott Krause........ The Smokies are off to a hot 20-9 start in the Eastern Division. Either Ben Hendrickson (4-2, 2.54) or Pedro Liriano (5-10, 3.41) will start the first game of this series on Tuesday. I've got conflicting sources which pitcher will get the ball. -

Inland Empire (Mariners) 9, High Desert 7 This Inland Empire team has some fun names on it... High Desert Site Game Summary: Hmmm, wonder how Jeff Housman or Jason Shelley would have done in a Mavs' uniform today? Six-Run 9th Inning Can't Save MavsADELANTO, CA ? Despite a ferocious six-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the High Desert Mavericks still lost to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 9-7, on Sunday afternoon at Mavericks Stadium. Inland Empire jumped out to a commanding 9-1 lead, holding the Mavs in check all day. Inland Empire reliever Justin Blood, who took the loss on Friday night in a 6-5 Mavs win, gave up six runs and had to be removed before the eight-run lead completely disappeared. Juan Done was summoned on and after giving up a three-run double to Chris Morris, got Johnny Raburn, the tying run at the plate, to line out to center field to end it. Inland Empire took the lead in the first inning, as Greg Jacobs' sac fly scored Dustin Delucchi for a 1-0 lead. The Mavs quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, as Raburn doubled and scored on a ground ball from Brad Nelson, tying the game at 1-1. The 66ers would score the next eight runs, getting three more against Mavs starter Chris Saenz, three against Justin Gordon and finally two against Tony Stavros. Hunter Brown?s RBI single in the second gave the 66ers the lead for good at 2-1. Blake Bone homered to lead off the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and a two-run homer for Chris Collins in the eighth looked like plenty for 66ers starter Glenn Bott (4-5). Bott held the Mavs to just one run on three hits in seven innings in collecting the win. Done, who got the final out in the ninth, picked up his second save of the year. Saenz (6-8) allowed four runs in five plus innings, taking the loss. Scott Candelaria had three hits to lead the Mavs, who have dropped two straight games, and are now just 5-24 in the second half. Brad Nelson went 0-4 and saw an eight-game hitting streak come to an end. The Mavs face the San Jose Giants at 7:05 at Mavericks Stadium on Monday night. David Nolasco (2-5) goes for High Desert, while Jeff Clark (0-0) throws for San Jose in the first of four straight meetings between the two clubs. -

Game One: Huntsville 10, West Tenn (Cubs) 0 Game Two: Huntsville 1, West Tenn 0 Pretty much what will go down as a very special night in Stars' history, as team historian and ultra-fan David Weiser would most certainly agree. Following up LHP Jeff Housman's scintillatingly efficient AA debut, 26-year-old Jason Shelley, fresh from absolutely dominating Frontier League competition for a year and a half now, tosses a complete game, three-hit, ten strikeout, seven-inning shutout as Huntsville wins a squeaker in game two of Sunday's twinbill. Shelly mixed a 90-92 MPH fastball with two out pitches, what he himself deemed a "slurve", and a very effective and seemingly nasty splitter. Even at age 26, it's a wonder that no one plucked Shelley from the independent ranks prior to this. They'll be talking about this evening for a long time in Huntsville. -

By the way, Huntsville's defense behind Housman was spectacular tonight -- flawless ball highlighted by tremendous plays by Machado, Hart, Gemoll, Krynzel, and others. Portnoy had six "stars" on his scorecard for defensive excellence. So no worry about unearned runs for Housman tonight. J.J. Hardy with a 3-run bomb and Ryan Gripp goes deep, too... Obviously, much more on this one by Monday AM -- probably the best overall game by the team this year. Let's see, Jeff throws just a bit harder than Jamie Moyer -- that means Housman should be in Milwaukee for the next 20 years or so. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Now for the next "new" guy in Game Two... -

Game One: Huntsville 10, West Tenn (Cubs) 0 Stars break three-game losing streak in this seven-inning doubleheader opener... Jeff Housman's line for Huntsville tonight: 6 IP, 1 hit (a 4th inning bloop single), 0 runs, 2 BB, 0 K 12 ground ball outs, only 62 pitches The word is he's around 86 with the fastball, but hides the ball well, hits all his spots, moves the ball around, and Huntsville pitching coach Stan Kyles had been told by the folks in Beloit that Housman "really gets it". "Wow" comes to mind... Actually, Robert Portnoy said Housman reminded him of Derek Lee... Well, Jeff is seven or so years younger... Congratulations, Jeff! The first time your friends and family could here a Brewer broadcaster describe you and your game this season... -

Rochester (Twins) 5, Indianapolis 3 Indy Site Game Summary: ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester Red Wings sent 10 men to the plate and scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning as they defeated the Indianapolis Indians 5-3 Sunday afternoon. The Indians scored two runs and had the potential to blow the game wide open in the first inning, but failed to do so. The first five Tribe hitters singled against Red Wings starter Brad Thomas. Bill Hall extended his hitting streak to 13 games when he led off the contest with a single to right-center. After going to third on Jason Conti's single, Hall scored the game's first run on a base hit by Jim Rushford. After a single by Mark Smith loaded the bases, Keith Luuloa's hit drove in Conti to make it 2-0. With the bases still loaded, Thomas struck out Wilton Veras and got Ryan Knox to hit into an inning-ending double play to end the threat. After starting the game with three straight hits with runners in scoring position, the Indians (42-57) went just 1-for-13 in similar situations the rest of the game. The Tribe got doubles from Veras in the fourth, Alex Delgado in the sixth, Hall in the seventh and Pete Zoccolillo in the eighth, but only one of those men advanced to third and none scored. The Tribe's third run came in the fifth when Conti singled, stole second and came home on a single by Smith. Lefthander Doug Davis (0-1) made his Indians debut Sunday. Pitching for his third organization and fifth team in 2003, Davis got roughed up in the fourth when 10 Red Wings came to the plate. Josh Rabe, who was making his Triple-A debut for Rochester (48-52) homered to start the frame. After base hits by Michael Restovich and Todd Sears, Mike Ryan came through with a two-run single to put the Red Wings ahead 3-2. Ryan and Brandon Marsters came home later in the inning on a single by Luis Rodriguez, the second of three hits on the day for the Wings' second baseman. Rabe, batting for the second time in the inning, lined a single to right-center, but Conti threw out Kevin Connacher at the plate to end the inning. It was Conti's league-leading 13th assist from the outfield. Davis worked seven innings allowing 10 hits and one walk while striking out five. Davis started the season in the Texas organization and made four starts for Triple-A Oklahoma and one for the Rangers. He was claimed off waivers by Toronto in early May and spent two months with the Blue Jays making 11 starts and going 4-6 with a 5.00 ERA. He became a free agent in mid-July and signed with Milwaukee on the 14th. After one start at Double-A Huntsville he was promoted to the Indians for Sunday's game. The Indians return to Victory Field Monday night for a two-game series against Columbus. It will be the Tribe's only two home games during a 17-day period. Lefthander Nate Teut (2-3, 3.58) will face the Clippers' Christian Parker (3-6, 6.27). David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: JULY'S HOT... BUT WE'RE NOTBat Day brought out another strong crowd, more actually than the Miguel Tejada Bobblehead Giveaway, on this humid 87° evening, but the hometown boys, sluggish again, disappointed the crowd of nearly 6,900, and in fact, gave it away on one bizarre play in the 5th inning. Lanky outfielder Aron Weston led off the inning with a walk on four pitches from Luis Martinez....... Martinez can be terribly streaky. He can pitch like a world-beater, then lose control of the situation. He's done that since his first start this year. If you define quality starts as finishing a game with a 3.00 ERA or lower, then 13 of his 18 starts qualify. Of the five exceptions, four have come since May 28....... Brendan Harris battled him at the plate, but flied out to left on a 3-and-2 count and Jason Dubois did the same to center on a 2-2 pitch....... With the count 2-and-1 on Mike Dzurilla, Weston tried to get his 3rd stolen base of the night. Kade Johnson's throw skipped into center field, where Dave Krynzel was backing up the play. He tried to gun down Weston at third, but the throw hit Weston in the back as he slid in, and the ball caromed toward the dugout. Weston leapt to his feet and sped home, giving the Diamond Jaxx a 5-3 lead....... The two errors following a stolen base became the insurance run in this ballgame........ In the 8th inning, Ryan Gripp, 6-for-13 in July and batting .329 since May, led off with a single to the right field corner and ultimately scored on a ground ball, for the Stars' 4th run....... Just off the top of my head, I believe this is the 12th game the Stars have lost this year as the result of an error or errors. Where the Diamond Jaxx were able to capitalize on their opportunities, the Stars, so uncharacteristic of their first half play, were not, and the 8th inning is a model of that. After Gripp's single, Krynzel hit a timely one-out single in back of third base. Shortstop Ryan Theriot, who had just made a fine running play on Alejandro Machado on the outfield grass, was unable to make this play near the line, as the ball bounced just in front of his glove........ Reliever Emanuel Ramires walked J.J. Hardy on four pitches, then with runners on first and second, Corey Hart hit a grounder to third, forcing J.J. at second. Gripp scored, as I mentioned, as Corey beat the throw to first........ Brandon Gemoll, 11-for-33 during the Stars recent 11-game slump, was intentionally walked to face Noochie Varner........ It turned out to be a wise decision, even though Varner has hit .282 with 8 RBIs in the Stars' last 11 games. Varner, on the first pitch, hit a broken bat liner right back to Ramires. Ramires recorded the final out, then slammed the ball to the mound as Varner slammed his bat. The Stars had a scoring opporunity in their big 3-run 4th inning when they came up with four consecutive hits from Hardy, Hart, Gemoll, and Varner, three of them doubles....... Varner was stranded after Daryl Clark grounded out to the right side and Kade Johnson grounded to short. The Stars have lost three straight only three other times this season. They've now lost 7 of their last 11 and the breakdown is on the standings page........ www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html The glaring stat out of this is the .186 batting average from the top 3 men in the order. Neither Alejandro Machado nor Dave Krynzel drove in a run, while producing a combined two doubles and three runs, all from Machado....... There has also been a failure from the bottom three of the order. Batting .210, they've gone 3-for-30 in their last three games. Sunday's double-header will mark the Double-A debut of lefty Jeff Housman and righty Jason Shelley, as they take the mound for the Huntsville Stars........ This is not without precedent. On August 5, 2001 at Joe Davis Stadium, Andy High and Bobby Sismundo made their debuts with the Stars against Jacksonville. High had come up, like Shelley, from the independent ranks, while Sismundo had been acquired from the Phillies in a trade. Neither pitcher got the decision that day, as the Stars split the double-header with the Suns....... Housman and Shelley will be opposed by Korean Jae-Kuk Ryu (1-0, 4.97) and lefty Felix Sanchez (1-0, 3.58), who was activated off the disabled list five days ago. -

If not for a Jon Steitz injury callup to Beloit very early in the Midwest League season and then the added opportunity to start when Calvin Carpenter was injured, who knows if Jeff Housman would even be above rookie ball right now? The fact that Housman won't be 22 years old until next month and the fact he was a 33rd round selection just last year makes for good newspaper copy at least. Mix in an independent leaguer in Shelley that we know little about, and Stars' announcer Robert Portnoy will set us up with an evening that could be extremely exciting or a bit of a letdown given how well we'd like to see the "new" guys debut.
