  2. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: Mavs score late to pick up victory Mavericks' Parra pitches eight scoreless innings FROM STAFF REPORTS BAKERSFIELD ? It appeared that the High Desert Mavericks would once again squander a gem of a pitching performance. But against Bakersfield on Tuesday, the Mavs' bats came through late to provide starter Manny Parra ? who allowed no runs on just four hits in eight innings ? with a win. High Desert (6-12) tallied three runs in the ninth inning to edge the Blaze 3-1 and snap its four-game losing streak. Jeff Eure singled with one out in the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Blaze reliever Chad Orvella. After Bakersfield intentionally walked Travis Hinton, Froilan Villanueva launched a double off the top of the left-center field fence that scored Eure. The next batter, Ben Van Iderstine, laced a grounder down the first base line to drive in Hinton and Villanueva. High Desert's scoring came after Bakersfield starter Jamie Shields exited the game having allowed no runs on four hits through eight innings. In one stretch the Blaze right-hander sent down 15 straight Mavs before Hinton singled in the seventh. Shields struck out seven. Bakersfield (7-11) scored a run in the bottom of the ninth off Mavs' reliever Nick Slack and eventually sent the tying run to the plate. But Slack held on for his fifth save of the season. Parra (5-2) earlier this year pitched a five-hit, complete game shutout in High Desert's 4-0 win over San Jose. Against Bakersfield, the right-hander allowed just four singles while striking out six. The Mavericks are now 2-8 on the road against North Division opponents and have won four of their last six road games overall.
  3. Final, Game Two: Beloit 3, Fort Wayne (Padres) 0 As I listen here to the Snappers recap, I gain more venom for the insidious Sports Network site -- which clearly had the Snappers winning Game One. Well, guess what, turns out here is your correct final: Final, Game One: Fort Wayne (Padres) 4, Brewers 2, eight innings, scheduled for seven Yup, Fort Wayne scored three in the top of the eighth, and then held on. And this is the site Baseball America wants to hang its hat on for scores and stats going forward? Bad, really bad.... So, once again to summarize, Snappers split, not sweep...

Final, Game One: Beloit 4, Fort Wayne (Padres) 2, eight innings, scheduled for seven Snappers gave up a run to fall behind 2-1 in the top of the eighth, but a walk-off HR gives Beloit the win -- details on the how's and who's later... 6. Nelson blows away derby competition By BRUCE McLELLAN Times Sports Staff brucem@htimes.com CHATTANOOGA - Huntsville Stars manager Frank Kremblas saw which way the wind was blowing and felt good about the Southern League All-Stars home run derby. The wind was blowing in from left field at BellSouth Park Tuesday evening, making it harder for a right-handed hitter to yank home runs. That was an advantage to two left-handed sluggers whom Kremblas managed: Prince Fielder and Brad Nelson were in the home run derby because their home run totals were among the top three on the West team. Kremblas, who was managing the West, felt particularly good about Nelson. "I expected Brad to win it," Kremblas said. "He's got a lot of power." Kremblas was right. Nelson hit home runs on the first three of his five swings in the final round to beat Chattanooga Lookouts catcher Brian Peterson, who had no homers in the round. Nelson had only two homers in 10 swings in the preliminary round, but that was more than either of his West teammates in the competition and allowed him to advance. Fielder and Mobile first baseman Greg Sain had one homer apiece in the derby preliminary round. By the second round, Nelson, who has hit 13 homers this season, relaxed and got in a groove with the event's pitcher, Lookouts pitching coach Jamie Dismuke. "I think he figured out the spot I liked," Nelson said.
  7. We've since learned that RHP Jesse Harper is going for the Mavericks this evening.
  8. The forecast is dank and gloomy in Rhode Island, but hopefully the AAA All-Star Game will be good to go. VCR Alert: 6:00 PM Central Wednesday 7/14, ESPN2 I was unlucky in that I saw Ben Hendrickson's roughest start this season on this same mound in May -- pretty sure he'll put on a show for us tonight. As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, former Brewer first base farmhand Bucky Jacobsen (putting up ridiculous monster numbers for AAA Tacoma -- Mariners) continues to win over fans wherever he is, as he's become a favorite of the locals and media here as well during the Fan Fest activities this week.

  18. Helena Independent Republic Game Story: Brewers close out homestand with loss to Billings By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Helena Brewers might have had a shot at coming back from a two-run deficit if the Billings Mustangs hadn't turned double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Billings defense kept the Brewers to three batters an inning in the last four frames Monday at Kindrick Legion Field on their way to a 6-3 win, capping off a three-game series victory 2-1. Ramon Ramirez got the save for Billings. The Venezuela native pitched the last five innings of the game, allowing only three hits and two walks. The Brewers didn't score while he was on the mound. Helena had an early 1-0 lead in the game after third baseman Tony Festa was hit by a pitch and then scored on a wild pitch from Mustangs starter Jacobo Meque. The Brewers scored two more times in the third. Steve Sollman was on base with a walk and Grant Richardson was hit by a pitch when designated hitter Charlie Lozada sent a two-out pitch from Meque off the center field wall, scoring Sollman from second and moving Richardson to third. Charlie Fermaint singled to bring Richardson home and tie the game at 3. Fermaint was 2-for-4 in the game. Billings shortstop Paul Janish, who had been a crucial player in the first two games, homered to left-center in the fourth, giving the Mustangs the lead, and slugger Bobby Mosby sent another ball over the fence in the fifth to extend Billings' lead to two. Billings leadoff hitter Philip Gentry singled in the seventh and scored from second on a Helena error. Gentry was 2-for-5. Mosby's homer put him in a tie for first in the Pioneer League for RBI with Helena outfielder Adam Mannon. Each player has 23. Mannon finished the game 2-for-3. Mosby and Janish each were 2-for-4 in the game. Robert Hinton, who took the mound in the fourth and pitched five innings was given the loss, but not without collecting nine strikeouts first. Helena plays the Raptors on Wednesday in Ogden, Utah, for a three-game series before heading to Provo for a series. The Brewers don't return home until they host Ogden for four games starting July 21.
  19. Huntsville Times Article: Huntsville reps savor trip to Futures Game By GENE DUFFEY For The Times HOUSTON - Prince Fielder sat in one of the heavily padded chairs in front of the big screen television in the Houston Astros clubhouse. The Huntsville Stars first baseman was enjoying the luxury of the major leagues before Sunday's All-Star Futures Game at Minute Maid Park. "It's a good feeling," said Fielder, who dressed in the locker usually occupied by Houston right-hander Wade Miller. "It makes you want to work that much harder." Fielder started at first base and batted cleanup for the U.S. team, getting a single to left and striking out in his two at-bats. Rickie Weeks, his Stars teammate, entered the game in the fourth inning at second base and popped up to second in his only at-bat. The U.S. beat the World team 4-3 in the seven-inning game. "It's everybody's dream to be here," said Weeks, sitting in a director's chair in front of the locker where Carlos Beltran dresses. Minute Maid Park looked very inviting to a player from Double-A ball, Houston's locker room is five times the size of the home team's quarters at Joe Davis Stadium. "It's a state-of-the-art facility," Weeks said. "Taking batting practice on a big league field, what more can you ask for?" "Everything's a little nicer," added Fielder. "The clubhouse is better. You feel a little more comfortable here. I'm going to take advantage of it and have fun." Weeks learned a little about life in the big leagues at the end of the 2003 season when he was called up to Milwaukee. He appeared in seven games with the Brewers in September. "You got a taste of the people you'd been seeing on TV all your life," he said. "That makes it more appealing to go out and play ball (in the minors)." Any player in the minors would have relished this weekend. Instead of a bus trip to Greenville or Mobile, Weeks and Fielder flew to Houston on Saturday. They stayed at the Hyatt-Regency. Nice place, Weeks reported. "The bus trip is a start," Weeks said of his career. "But you've got to go out there and work hard and hopefully get back up to the big show." Milwaukee's back-to-back No. 1 picks the last two years spent Saturday with family. Several of Fielder's uncles and cousins live in the Houston area. He hung out with them and ate dinner at their house. He had been to Texas for Christmas. Weeks' parents flew in from Altamonte Springs, Fla. So did his girlfriend, KaShanna, from Savannah State, where she is a grad student and volleyball coach. KaShanna's brother lives in Houston and attends Prairie View A&M, about 50 miles northwest of the city. The entourage gathered for dinner Saturday night at the year-old Downtown Aquarium. Fielder's father, Cecil, arrived from Atlanta, where he owns a cable TV station. He watched the Futures Game from the U.S. team dugout and participated in the celebrity softball game later. "This is awesome," Cecil said. The elder Fielder acknowledged that his son doesn't always enjoy being known as the son of someone famous. "He wants to be his own man," Cecil said. "I'm playing baseball, I'm healthy, I'm exactly where I want to be," said Prince, who is hitting .256 with 14 homers and 46 RBIs for Huntsville. "I let the Brewers worry about where I am. Fielder, 20, struck out on three pitches in his second at-bat, flailing away at a fastball out of the zone for strike three. "It was over my head," Fielder said. "I had no business swinging at it. These (pitchers) are real good and you only get one at look at them. They have the advantage." "There was some pretty good stuff out there," Weeks said.
  20. Huntsville Times Game Story: Stars fall with 2 starters absent By BROOKE MILAM For The Times The Huntsville Stars could find consolation in two things on Sunday. First, their three-day vacation for the All-Star break was about to begin. Second, they entered the break tied for first place with Birmingham in the Southern League Western Division. Otherwise, there was little to like about an 8-1 loss to the Mobile BayBears in front of an announced crowd of 1,106 at Joe Davis Stadium. After winning the first two games in the series, the Stars (10-8 second half) lost Saturday and Sunday by a combined 15-5 score. Huntsville entered both the losses at a disadvantage - first baseman Prince Fielder and second baseman Rickie Weeks were in Houston for Sunday's Futures Game. "We didn't have two of the main guys in our lineup and I'm not sure how much of an effect it had, but it looked to have a lot," Stars manager Frank Kremblas said. "I'm just theorizing, but it seemed to me that (Mobile) played a lot sharper and with more confidence with those guys out." Kremblas, who will manage the West during the Southern League All-Star Game on Tuesday in Chattanooga, took Sunday's loss in stride. "You focus on being fundamentally sound every day, but it's not bad to split a series since you play every day," he said. Josh Barfield homered for Mobile in the second inning and the BayBears added two more runs in the third before Stars starter Dennis Sarfate was relieved by Paul Stewart one out into the sixth. Sarfate (4-8) took the loss, striking out six while giving up eight hits and three runs. Things didn't get better for the Stars, as lefty Brian Adams started the seventh inning and gave up five runs on five hits. The crushing blow was a three-run homer by Ben Johnson. Huntsville shortstop Ozzie Chavez ruined the shutout for winning pitcher Mike Thompson (5-0) with a home run in the eighth. Mobile (7-11 second half) piled up 13 hits to Huntsville's four. "Not that this was our only weakness, but when we made mistakes pitching-wise they hit them and made us pay," Kremblas said. "They aren't always going to do that, but this series they hit them." Two Stars - Fielder and outfielder Brad Nelson - will participate in Tuesday's All-Star Game, and hitting coach Sandy Guerrero will join Kremblas on the West coaching staff. The rest of the team is off until Thursday when the Stars host the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:05 p.m. in the opener of a four-game series. "We tell them to enjoy their days off and think about anything but baseball," Kremblas said.
  21. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: Lake Elsinore completes sweep High Desert falters again in late innings By KRIS REILLY/Staff Writer ADELANTO ? Lake Elsinore's sweep of High Desert could serve as a microcosm of the Mavericks' entire 2004 campaign. Victory was tantalizingly within reach in all three games of the series, but late-inning pitching breakdowns and a lack of opportunistic hitting led to three demoralizing losses. The Mavericks lost 5-3 to the Storm at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday despite tying the game heading into the eighth inning. High Desert (5-12, 30-57) either led or tied in the sixth inning or later in all three games of the series. "You can be in games, but you've got to be able to close them," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "For whatever reason, our pitching has just faltered in the seventh, eighth and ninth, and the same thing happened today." But the bullpen wasn't solely to blame. The High Desert lineup managed just three hits in the first six innings Sunday, as Storm starter Jon Huber racked up a season-high 10 strikeouts. Travis Hinton launched a solo homer off Huber to lead off the seventh, tying the game 1-1. A single by third baseman Troy Farnsworth chased Huber with no outs in the seventh, bringing on Storm reliever Natanael Mateo. Outfielder Mario Mendez hit a two-out single and later stole second, putting runners at second and third for shortstop Enrique Cruz, who struck out swinging to end the inning. High Desert struck out 14 times in all, and seven of nine Mavs struck out at least once. "We haven't done a good job all year of putting the ball in play with two strikes," Mavs hitting coach Stanton Cameron said. "We swing at a lot of bad pitches, and we've got to address that, quickly." While the Mavs were swinging and missing in two-strike counts, Lake Elsinore (8-8, 42-44) was taking advantage of them. The Storm put up three runs on four hits off reliever Khalid Ballouli in the eighth, despite the fact that Ballouli found himself ahead in more than a few counts. "I had everybody 0-2 or 1-2, and I just didn't put them away," Ballouli said. "I felt like I had everybody in position to strike them out, and I just didn't." Down 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, High Desert got a one-out double from catcher Froilan Villanueva. Outfielder Ben Van Iderstine singled and advanced to second on a throwing error charged to Storm third baseman Kervin Jacobo, which also allowed Villanueva to score. Mendez singled into left, and Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to score Van Iderstine. Kennard Bibbs flew out to end the game. Both starting pitchers were stellar despite not factoring into the decision. High Desert got five strong innings from starter Greg Bruso, who allowed four hits and one unearned run while striking out two and walking two. Huber, however, was just as dominant, allowing one earned run on five hits in six innings of work. Still, High Desert had its chances against Lake Elsinore's relievers. "You have to make the plays when you have a chance to make them," Farnsworth said. "It's not anything different in this series than against any other team on any other day. The team that makes the plays wins, and we just haven't been making the plays when we need to make them." Queen echoed that sentiment: "It's the little things that beat you, and that's what this club doesn't do. They don't do the little things, and that's why there are a lot of losses behind this club's name." NOTES: Hinton hit his 16th homer of the season with his father, John Hinton, in the stands at Mavericks Stadium. John, a Phoenix firefighter, makes the 6 1/2-hour drive to see Travis play whenever possible. The first baseman's strong season hasn't come as a surprise to his father. "This is probably the first time he's been able to play the whole year healthy," John said. "I think he knew this was going to be the year where he had to show something." Hinton is already seven home runs past his previous career high of nine, and he won the home run derby and garnered MVP honors at the California-Carolina League All-Star Game last month. Scott Smeltzer/Victor Valley Daily Press Staff Photographer High Desert's Troy Farnsworth hits a single in the seventh inning of Sunday's game against Lake Elsinore at Mavericks Stadium.
