  2. Not to be confused with the Brewers' Organization Player of the Month Award: INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indianapolis Indians infielder Luis Figueroa has been named the Tribe?s Windsor Jewelers Player of the Month, it was announced today by the Indians. Figueroa, 30, hit .320 during the month of May, producing 31 hits, one home run and 16 RBI. In 26 games, he maintained a .412 slugging percentage and .340 on-base percentage. The 5-9, 140-pound native of Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, established a team-high hitting streak of 12 games during the month. Figueroa will be recognized prior to Friday night?s game with Rochester at Victory Field and will be rewarded with a custom-made Indians watch, courtesy of Windsor Jewelers.
  3. Ahead of the Cubbies -- sweet! Three games back of the Cards for the Wild Card, four back of the Reds for the Division. Cards? Reds? Who are they -- nuthin'! 5-5 thus far during this stretch of Dodger - Padre games, not shabby at all... If this pitching staff goes on to Anaheim and shuts down that offense, wow -- this pitching run is incredible. Nice job, Mike Maddux -- and I imagine the catchers are helping, if not at the plate. Have you ever seen fielders positioned better, game in, game out? Rich Dauer -- kudos. Good night, kids.

  6. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: GAME SUMMARY: Chris Magruder led off the Indians first inning with a solo home run and the Tribe added another run in the second frame to take a 2-0 lead, but Rochester scored eight consecutive runs off Tribe starter Pedro Liriano and reliever Paul Stewart to take a 8-2 victory over Indianapolis Friday night. The loss pulls the Tribe into a first-place tie with the Columbus Clippers, victors tonight over Buffalo. Indianapolis falls to 29-23, Rochester improves to 28-26. Rochester out hit the Tribe, 11-6. Red Wings starter Willie Eyre (3-1) shut down the Tribe after a rocky start. He threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out none. Indianapolis starter Pedro Liriano (2-3) picked up the loss. He allowed four runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three in five innings. The two clubs play Saturday night at Victory Field with first pitch set for 7 p.m. QUOTES: Cecil Cooper, Tribe manager on the loss: "Poor pitching execution tonight," said Cooper. "If you don?t pitch well, you don?t win. Offensively, we?re not the same team and we have to pitch well to win." Jason Kubel, right fielder, Rochester: "I?ve tried to do what I?ve done all season," said Kubel. "I tried not to do too much and looked for something in the middle of the plate. My approach has remained the same with every pitcher. I challenge them all equally." NOTES: Rochester pitching shut down Ryan Knox (0-3) halting a nine-game hitting streak. Friday night?s attendance of 9,780 was a season-high for the Indians.
  7. Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 14, Huntsville 1 When you mix five errors in with 16 base hits allowed and six walks issued, that's not a good night; this probably qualifies as the worst game by a Brewer affiliate this season... 15. Welcome back to newlywed Mark McCarter in Huntsville, with some preview notes for this evening: Stars want to know the scores They'll count on scoreboard to upate pennant race By MARK McCARTER Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com As pennant races simmer, there is a baseball cliche for what goes on. "Scoreboard watching,'' they call it. For the Huntsville Stars and their fans, it takes on double meaning tonight as the club opens an eight-game homestand. The Stars remain in contention for the Southern League West first-half title with 16 games remaining in the half. So an occasional glance at the progress of division-leading West Tenn in the coming weeks is not inappropriate. For the fans, scoreboard watching has a different implication in tonight's 7:05 game against Chattanooga. After various delays caused by weather and other snafus, the new scoreboard at Joe Davis Stadium should be essentially fully operational for the first time tonight, according to general manager Bryan Dingo. Only a few minor bells and whistles for the elaborate new board are left to unveil. The Stars return home at 28-26 and on a three-game losing streak, standing three games behind West Tenn after having lost 8-2 at Montgomery Thursday night. The game marked the return of pitcher Matt Ford, sidelined since April 26 with a sore elbow. He pitched two innings and yielded one run and three hits. The Brewers added to their minor league pitching pool Thursday by claiming right-hander Jesse Harper off waivers from the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old Texan was a 13-game winner in low-A ball last season and has been sent to High Desert by the Brewers. A fireworks show will follow tonight's game. Baseballs will be presented to the first 1,500 kids 14 and under on Saturday and the first 1,500 fans will receive a minibat at Sunday afternoon's game.
  16. Two 2003 draft picks are set to join the Beloit Snappers in Dayton on Saturday. Each has been in extended spring training to this point... 17th round RHP Tommy Hawk, not quite yet 19 1/2 years old, led the Arizona League in ERA at 2.31 in 46.2 IP last summer. Infielder Will Lewis will be 23 in August. He was the Brewers' 32nd round pick out of Texas Christian University. Lewis appeared in one game for Helena last summer, was injured (leg if I remember correctly), and returned to drive in 19 runs in only 99 AB's with the Arizona Rookie club. Congrats to both. Just speculation on my part, but Hawk would likely fill Kenny Durost's spot on the staff, and we'll have to see if infielder Guilder Rodriguez, inactive the past couple of days, is OK. Snapper management usually is on top of things on their transaction page, which we'll monitor this weekend. Will Lewis is probably one of the more obscure Brewer prospect names for you readers of the minor league board. We posted this link right after he signed last June; worth re-posting today... www.texarkanagazette.com/...orts01.txt And while we've posted several on-the-field updates on Tommy Hawk over the past year, a favorite Hawk thread is still hanging around the Draft Forum these days: p082.ezboard.com/fbrewers...=454.topic

  21. AAA doesn't have an Allstar game do they. Sure do, in Pawtucket this year -- July 14th, the night after the major league All-Star game. There's a big three-day Fan Fest celebration associated with it, up here in my neck of the woods. I believe there's standing room available, but I won't be taking in the game live -- perhaps a fan-fest event, though.

  23. Huntsville Notes: Gwynn suspended: Tony Gwynn Jr. served a one-game suspension Thursday for his actions after being ejected Wednesday. Gwynn flipped his bat after a checked-swing strikeout and was ejected by umpire Pete Pedersen. Gwynn argued with Pedersen, appeared to make some contact and, when he left for the dugout, threw his helmet in Pedersen's direction. Fielder hits: Prince Fielder picked up his first hit since serving a three-game suspension last weekend. Fielder's first-inning single ended an 0-for-10 streak that included two double plays. Fielder was suspended after charging the mound following a hit by pitch last week.
  24. Huntsville Site Game Summary: The Biscuits backed up Wednesday?s 13-hit barrage with a 12-hit salvo, taking their third straight from the Stars, 8-2, on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Huntsville (28-26) dropped three games behind leader West Tenn in the Southern League West first-half race. Trailing 2-1, Montgomery scored seven unanswered runs. In the fourth, Robinson Cancel grounded a two-run single to right for a 3-2 Biscuits lead. In the sixth, Dan Dement punctuated his 4-for-4 night with a solo homer to right, his second of the game, and Montgomery sealed it with a four-run eighth. Nestor Perez singled home two and Jace Brewer and Juan Salas each knocked in one to put the Biscuits up, 8-2. Brad Nelson homered in the second to give the Stars a brief 1-0 lead, and Johnny Raburn?s third-inning sacrifice fly made it 2-1, Huntsville. Over the final six innings, Huntsville advanced just one runner as far as second base. Willie Glenn (2-2) picked up the win for the Biscuits, allowing only one hit and fanning three over 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Dennis Sarfate (3-5) suffered the loss in relief, permitting three runs on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts in five innings. Matt Ford started for Huntsville, his first appearance in five weeks after rehabbing from elbow soreness, and gave up one run on three hits and one walk while fanning two over two innings. Josh Parker struck out three in two perfect frames for his ninth save. Huntsville returns home for the first of four games with Chattanooga on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Lefty Jeff Housman (1-3, 3.04) meets Lookouts righty Steve Kelly (3-3, 3.74). Comcast presents a Fireworks Friday extravaganza and Madison RV Center sponsors Girl Scout Night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
  25. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: Overall effort helps Indians Farnsworth gets 1st victory with hitting help from Hart, Sheldon Corey Hart had two hits and an RBI and Scott Sheldon hit a solo home run to back up starter Jeff Farnsworth's seven shutout innings in the Indianapolis Indians' 3-1 win Thursday night over the Rochester Red Wings. The Indians (29-22) scored runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings and held Rochester scoreless until the eighth. Farnsworth allowed four hits, struck out two and walked none to notch a win in his first start with the Tribe. Red Wings starter and former Purdue player Dave Gassner (6-4) gave up three earned runs in seven innings to suffer the loss. Jason Childers picked up his 15th save, not allowing a run in the last 1 2/3 innings and striking out three. "I wanted to pick the team up tonight," Childers said. "It was important to get the first man out. In the eighth inning, I wanted to attack the (strike) zone. Heading into the ninth, I felt comfortable. I was able to move my pitches around." The lone RBI for Rochester (27-26) came from pinch-hitter Brian Simmons, who singled in Josh Rabe, who had doubled. The Tribe's Ryan Knox doubled, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
