  1. From the Huntsville Site: Dennis Sarfate scuffling in his first three AA starts -- it's early yet... It took a torrential downpour to stop the offenses on Thursday at Pringles Park. With Huntsville trailing the Diamond Jaxx after two complete innings, 6-3, rainfall postponed play in game one of a doubleheader. Game one will be resumed and game two played in its entirety as part of West Tenn?s visit to Huntsville, May 1-4. Chris Barnwell ? coming off a three-run homer in Tuesday?s 7-6 win ? delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the first for a 2-0 Stars lead. The Diamond Jaxx responded with a three-run first on the strength of Micah Hoffpauir?s two-run homer and Dennis Sarfate?s errant pick-off throw that scored Mike Dzurilla. Huntsville tied it in the top of the second, when Tony Gwynn, Jr. was hit by a pitch with two outs. Ryan Knox drew a walk and Prince Fielder ? Tuesday?s hero with a go-ahead two-run homer ? singled to right-center. Gwynn, Jr. scored easily and skipper Frank Kremblas sent Knox home all the way from first. Richard Lewis? relay throw nailed Knox in a close play the plate. The Jaxx reclaimed the lead in the home second. Ronny Cedeno led off with a double and Dwaine Bacon walked, then Richard Lewis doubled home Cedeno and sent Bacon to third. Jemel Spearman?s double off the leftfield wall scored Bacon and Lewis to put West Tenn up, 6-3. Sarfate surrendered six runs, five earned, on six hits, one walk and one hit batter in two innings. Jaxx starter Renyel Pinto permitted three runs on four hits, three walks and one hit batter over two frames. The Stars resume play Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville against the Tennessee Smokies. Stars righty Mike Jones (0-1, 6.60) faces Smokies right-hander Brad Thompson (1-0, 1.00). Game time is 7:05 p.m. with a Friday Fireworks spectacular following the game.
  2. Mavs' announcer Roxy Bernstein with the news that CF Kennard Bibbs is out of tonight's starting lineup. He was hit below the knee by a wayward fungo bat during warm-ups. Extent of the injury is not known at this time. Not only ironic because Bibbs hit his first pro HR last night, but he's also Roxy's guest for the pre-game show (before the injury).
  3. Beloit Game Summary from the Lugnuts' Site: LANSING - Billy Petrick led the way for the Lugnuts (9-5) pitching staff as they shut out Beloit (5-9) 2-0 for their third straight win and second shutout of the season. Lansing got the Thirsty Thursday fans excited in the 2nd inning when Kevin Collins took Snappers pitcher Greg Kloosterman deep over the centerfield wall for his team-leading fourth homerun of the season for the 1-0 lead. Collins finished 2-for-2 and marked the third straight game in which a Lugnut batter has belted a homerun. It would be enough support for Petrick (2-0), who went six innings scattering five hits and striking out two. Clay Rapada pitched a scoreless 7th before Juan Mateo got out of a jam in the 8th. Vinny Rottino got on base for Beloit with a single and moved to third on Adam Heether's base hit. Trailing by a run with two outs, Drew Anderson hit what would have been the game-tying single but the ball hit Heether running from first base for the third out of the inning, leaving the Snappers scoreless. The Lugnuts picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Drew Larsen knocked his second double of the game to left field and reached third on Chris Walker's sacrifice bunt. Robinson Chirinos came through with the RBI single to left to score Larsen for the two-run lead. Larsen was 2-for-3 on the night with two doubles and a run scored. Adalberto Mendez finished off the Snappers in the 9th inning for the shutout win and his sixth save of the season. Mendez is now tied for the league lead in saves. Kloosterman (1-1) took his first loss going seven innings, giving up one earned run with eight strikeouts and no walks. The Lugnuts try for the series sweep over Beloit Friday night, as Lansing's Randy Wells faces the Snappers Luis Pena. Game time is set for 5:05 p.m Central. High Desert audio available shortly -- only show in town during the late night this evening...
  4. Final: Indianapolis 5, Toledo (Tigers) 2 Indianapolis Game Wrap: Corey Hart homered and scored twice to lead the Indianapolis Indians past the Toledo Mud Hens, 5-2. The Tribe also got two hits apiece from Dave Krynzel, Chris Magruder and Jeffrey Liefer en route to their eighth win in 11 games this season. Krynzel led off the game with his second homer of the season, and Hart socked a solo shot in the second inning to pace the Indians to a 2-0 lead. Liefer stroked a one-run double in the fifth, and Scott Sheldon doubled in a run and scored in the sixth as Indianapolis extended its lead to 5-0. Indians' starter Ben Hendrickson (2-0) allowed just three hits and two runs over 5 1/3rd innings to pick up the win. Brian Bowles notched his first save of the season. Toledo starter Andy Van Hekken (0-2) was throttled for seven hits, two walks and five runs over 5 1/3rd innings. Eric Owens was 2-for-3 with a run scored to lead Toledo's (5-9) offensive attack. Indianapolis Box Score: Don't we all feel like proud Brewerfan dads -- Hendrickson, Krynzel, and Hart tonight -- J.J. most other nights, all AAA kids we've followed so closely... 11. Final: High Desert 4, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2 Excellent mound work two games in a row -- nice! High Desert Game Story from the Ontario Daily Bulletin: All hail the power bat that is Kennard Bibbs... Quakes pitcher Joe Saunders had another outstanding performance, but this time he only has a loss to show for it. Saunders (2-1) threw six strong innings allowing just one unearned run, but Rancho Cucamonga fell to High Desert, 4-2, in front of an announced crowd of 2,213 at the Epicenter. Saunders' performance was topped by Mavericks starter Khalid Ballouli (2-2) who blanked the Quakes over six innings. Ballouli struck out eight batters and allowed three hits while walking just one. "That's a tough one for Saunders. He did a good job out there," Quakes manager Bobby Meacham said. "You like to win that one for your starter, but I'm sure at some point this season he'll give up six or seven (runs) and we'll pick it up." Saunders pitched a perfect first inning and would have got out of the second inning unscathed, save for a throwing error by third baseman B.J. Weed on a two-out grounder by High Desert's Mario Mendez that allowed Froilan Villanueva to score. Saunders pitched four more scoreless inning without a real threat, but the Quakes couldn't figure out Ballouli as Sanders lost his first game in this his third start. The Mavericks' Kennard Bibbs hit his first career home run to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh off reliever Rich Thompson. Mario Mendez smacked High Desert's second homer of the night in the top of the ninth off David Austin, a two-run shot to right center that proved to be important. The Quakes tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth off Dan Kolb. B.J. Weed and Reggie Willits singled to start the inning and, with two outs, Michael Napoli smacked a single to right-center field to score both runners. The two-run single saved the Quakes from their first shutout of the season and extended Napoli's hitting streak to nine games. Greg Porter had a chance to tie the game after Napoli's hit, but Kolb struck him out to end the game and send the Quakes (6-6) to their fourth loss in five games. After striking out 16 Quake batters on Tuesday, Mavericks pitchers Kolb and Ballouli combined to fan 12 more Rancho hitters. "Sometimes you press when miss a chance to score or fail to move a runner over or you go 0-for-3 and try to get two hits the next time up," Meacham said. "We just have to relax and play, if you are thinking about the results all the time you're going to get into trouble. We have to get back to just playing." High Desert improved to 5-9 on the season. 12. Lansing State Journal on Lou Palmisano's basepath nemesis Wednesday night: At 5-foot-8, Lugnut outfielder Chris Walker grew up a fan of the smaller, speedy professional players. One of those childhood favorites coached him on Wednesday as the Lugnuts (8-5) took a 5-3 victory over Beloit (5-8). Vince Coleman, a 16-year major leaguer and first-year minor league instructor in the Chicago Cubs organization, is currently working with the Lugnuts. "Vince has made such a difference in my baserunning abilities," Walker said. "Before I started working with him, I was too hesitant on whether I was going or not. Now, I just know." Walker put that improvement on display Wednesday as he tied the single-game Lugnut record for stolen bases with three against the Snappers. Pat Hallmark stole three for Lansing in 1997 and Rick Pitts did it 1998. "Chris has no fear," said Coleman, who led the National League in stolen bases for six straight years (1985-90) and is sixth all-time with 752. "And once you have no fear, it really allows you to go straightforward in your development and be successful." Walker guaranteed he'd break the record by the end of the season. "Hopefully, I can get it tomorrow," he said. "I might have gotten it today if I could have gotten on again." Walker's three steals came in the first two innings. "Chris got into the lineup and now I can't take him out," Lansing manager Julio Garcia said. "He really changes the dynamic of the game with some things we can do with him in there."

  15. Final: Lansing (Cubs) 5, Beloit 3 Snappers can't overcome a four-run first-inning deficit... Beloit Game Summary from the Lugnuts' Site: A big first inning and a strong outing from Lansing starter Carlos Marmol paced the Lugnuts (8-5) in a 5-3 win over Beloit (5-8) for the second night in a row. The Lugnuts wasted no time getting on the board after Chris Walker led off the game with a bunt single. He stole second base, his first of a team record-tying three stolen bases in a game, before scoring on Snapper second baseman Guilder Rodriguez' error on Robinson Chirinos' grounder up the middle to go up 1-0. Brian Dopirak followed with a line drive two-run home run to left field, his second in as many nights and third of the season to tie him for the team lead, for the quick 3-0 score. Ryan Fitzgerald kept the hits coming with a double to right field and then stole third. Jake Fox got the fourth hit of the inning for the Lugnuts with his RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0. Beloit answered back with a run in the 2nd on a triple to centerfield by Lou Palmisano, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Rottino. The Snappers had a power shot of their own in the 5th inning as Rottino went deep on a solo home run to left to cut the lead to 4-2. That was about the only mistake of the game for Marmol (2-0), who went eight innings giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out seven for the Lugnuts. Marmol got another insurance run in the 6th inning when Fox ripped a single to left and moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a wild pitch. Alfredo Francisco picked up his first RBI of the season on his infield single to score Fox for the 5-2 lead. Adalberto Mendez pitched the 9th for Lansing giving up one unearned run on a passed ball before striking out Rottino to end the game and notch his fifth save. Carlos Villanueva (0-3) took the loss for the Snappers, allowing five runs, three earned, on eight hits. The Lugnuts look to continue their winning ways in the third meeting of the four-game series with Beloit Thursday night at Old Park. Lansing's Billy Petrick will pitch against Beloit's Luis Pena, with game time set for 5:05 PM Central Time. 17. Final: Indianapolis 2, Toledo (Tigers) 1 Staff effort outstanding... Indianapolis Game Notes: Indians skipper Cecil Cooper utilized a combination of five pitchers to shut down the Toledo Mud Hens Wednesday evening, 2-1. For the second time in their careers, Jason Childers saved a victory for his brother Matt (2-0). According to Elias Sports Bureau, that feat has never happened in Major League Baseball since saves became an official statistic in 1969. Ironically, the two teamed up together at Toledo last season (Aug. 7, 2003) to reach the same conclusion. "It was a little bit windy out there," said Matt Childers. "I felt like I could get pretty comfortable. It?s exciting to have Jason save one for me. It was a little bit intense to watch Jason out there tonight. We enjoy being together and winning just makes the game a lot of fun." Toledo (5-8) scored the first run of the game off Matt Childers in the third inning, after the Tribe reliever replaced starter Victor Santos. Indianapolis (7-3) tied the game in the fourth inning. Jeff Liefer?s sacrifice fly off Toledo starter Shane Loux scored Dave Krynzel. In the next frame, Corey Hart hammered a triple into right center field off Loux in the fifth inning. Hart then scored on an errant pickoff throw from Mud Hens catcher Mike DiFelice, which proved to be the game winning run. The Indians are now 7-0 when the opposition scores first. They are 6-1 in one-run games and remain in first place in the IL West Division. The two teams meet again Thursday at Fifth Third Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest. 20. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: FIELDER'S CHOICEThe Stars win their 4th straight in a bizarre game that had me going to the record books, as well as the box score archives....... John Novinsky picked up the win for the 2nd straight night for the good guys. The last Stars pitcher to pull this off was Mike Maurer on July 28-29, 1996 vs. Memphis. An unusual feat for a relief pitcher in itself, but Maurer, like Novinsky, did it in consecutive 4-3 and 7-6 victories. A near coincidence with the only difference being Novinsky's 5-4 win Monday night........ Top that one off? How about this? The Diamond Jaxx hit three triples in West Tenn's four-run 1st inning. There's not even an entry in the Southern League Media Guide to cover this. It pretty much stops at the record of five triples in a single game by Knoxville in 1977, so hitting three in one inning --- you gotta think that for sure is a record....... In all, five triples were hit in this game and the instance I can find of this in a Stars game was on May 24, 1989 vs. Knoxville. Another rocky start for Jeff Housman tonight, who after three starts has given up 20 hits in 11 1/3 innings and has an ERA of 5.56....... Housman was pouncd on quickly in the 1st........ Leadoff hitter Jemel Spearman's single up the middle was quickly followed by a pair of triples to right field by former Greenville Brave Richard Lewis and Micah Hoffpauir, who is off to a .368 start -- 8th best mark in the Southern League...... Mike Dzurilla followed with a fly ball to right that scored him......... One out later, Matt Creighton hit the possible record third triple of the inning off Housman to left center. Successive singles by Giovany Soto and Ronny Cedeno followed and the Stars had a four-run handicap to start this game. That won't be much of a handicap with this team all year, I think....... In fact, it just makes a sleeping bull mad....... The Stars struck quickly in the 2nd inning to come within a run........ D'Jaxx starter Bobby Brownlie, ranked 6th among the Cubs' top prospects, walked Rickie Weeks, then gave up a double high off the right field wall to Brad Nelson, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd........ Chris Barnwell then stepped up and became the 8th Huntsville Star to get on the home run roll this year with a blast high over the wall in left field........ It wasn't until May 3 of last year that Brandon Gemoll became the 8th Huntsville hitter to get his first homer of the season, and that was 29 games into the season. After the Diamond Jaxx came back in the bottom of the 2nd with a two-out RBI double from Mike Dzurilla, it wasn't until the 5th the Stars were able to reduce their two-run lead. Meanwhile, Housman had set down eight of the next nine hitters before his pitch count was reached...... The Diamond Jaxx played tough tonight though, and they had their two-run lead back in the 6th....... Dwayne Bacon hit a two-out single through the right side and stole second base, setting up Jemel Spearman's RBI single. In the 7th, the Stars, who had battled all night, finally took the lead........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. opened the 7th by hitting a 2-2 pitch deep to left, hammering off the wall. Mike Dzurilla's throw got away from the cut-off man and Gwynn had the 5th and final triple of the night........ Alex Delgado then hit a chopper to short that was juggled by Ronny Cedeno. The error scored Gwynn to make it 6-5. In came Yunior. Pulling a double switch, Bobby Dickerson also brought in Josh Arteaga to play 2nd base. After a wild pitch, Prince Fielder worked the Diamond Jaxx new pitcher, Cabrera to a 3-2 count. Fielder crushed a hanging breaking ball to the deepest part of Pringles Park in right-center field and the Stars led 7-6....... You'd have to go back two Saturdays to find Fielder's last home run, but that was the Stars' 16th of the season, 12 games now into the season........ The 1997 Stars had 19 after 12 games and the 1985 team had 18. The 1995 team had 14, making this team the 3rd most prodigious home run hitting team at this stage of the season. The Stars' bullpen, now with a 2.96 ERA after 12 games, closed the door on two hits for the D'Jaxx' remaining three innings. Ryan Miller going back to last year, has now given up only two earned runs in 28 1/3 innings, a 0.64 ERA........ Throwing two kinds of sliders effectively, he struck out five, giving him now 20 strikeouts in 12 relief innings. He is certainly making his case for a promotion to Indianapolis....... It was thought Miller would finish this game, because no one was warming up in the 9th. Roberto Giron's aching lower back had kept him from action, but to my surprise (and Stars voice Robert Portnoy's) Giron began warming up after Miller started to face Jemel Spearman. On Miller's first pitch, Spearman laid a beauty of a push-bunt single to the right side....... Giron, who had not pitched since April 12, took a minute to warm up on the mound, then faced pinch-hitter Paul O'Toole........ O'Toole laid a bunt down to Giron, who wisely threw to first....... With the tying run on second, the dangerous Micah Hoffpauir lined Giron's 1-1 pitch to third base. One out away. Mike Dzurilla the last man. Giron strikes him out on a 94 mph fastball and that was the end of that........ With Birmingham's loss to the Smokies, 3-2, the Stars found themselves back in first place. The Stars are now batting .299 in their last four games, with more hits in their last four games then their first eight........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. is hitting .300 in his last four games, lifting his average to .205......... Prince Fielder is hitting .444 in his last five games with seven RBIs........ His, and Rickie Weeks' batting eye is sharp. Fielder has struck out 9 times in 41 at-bats, while Weeks has fanned 9 times in 45 at-bats........ Weeks is hitting .529 in his last four games. His .333 average is now 19th among Southern League batting leaders........ On the flip side, Brad Nelson has struck out 14 times in 40 at-bats, Chris Barnwell is still under the Mendoza line at .182, and Enrique Cruz, who started the season hot, is 1-for his last-13. Robert Portnoy, our man behind the mike, reports that the Milwaukee Brewers television network will be starting a farm report before every game and their first request was information on Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks. They also requested info on other Stars prospects. The Brewers broadcast team was also interested in excerpts of the Stars pre-game show....... Japanese journalists were at Pringles Park tonight, also interested in Fielder and Weeks. The Stars send Dennis Sarfate to face Renyel Pinto at about 6:30 CDT tomorrow........ Sarfate has failed to go into the 5th inning in his two starts so far.
  21. Huntsville Site Game Summary: There is one word to describe Huntsville?s performance on Tuesday night at Pringles Park: resilient. The Stars (7-5) recovered from West Tenn?s four-run first. Starter Jeff Housman rebounded to get his team into the fifth with a chance to win. And Prince Fielder capped Huntsville?s three-run seventh, slamming a go-ahead homerun in the Stars? 7-6 victory over the Diamond Jaxx (5-6). Huntsville jumped back into first place in the Southern League West, one-half game clear of Birmingham. Chris Barnwell provided Huntsville?s response to West Tenn?s first-inning uprising. Rickie Weeks led off the second with a walk, and Brad Nelson doubled off the rightfield wall. With two on and none out, Barnwell sent Bobby Brownlie?s first pitch high over the leftfield wall for his first homerun this season, a three-run shot that pulled Huntsville within 4-3. Housman showed tremendous grit after being reached for four runs on six hits, including three triples, in the first inning alone. He battled hard into the fifth, permitting just one more run over his 4 2/3 innings to keep Huntsville in striking distance. Trailing 5-3 in the fifth, Stars leadoff hitter Tony Gwynn, Jr. doubled to left and scored on Fielder?s two-out single, his second hit of the day. After the Jaxx added a sixth-inning tally, Huntsville?s seventh began with Gwynn?s triple to left-center. Alex Delgado hit a ground ball to short, where Ronny Cedeno juggled the ball as Gwynn scored. With Delgado at second, Fielder battled Jaxx reliever Yunior Cabrera to a 3-2 count. Fielder then launched a Cabrera breaking ball over the notch in the wall in right-center, more than 405 feet from home plate. Fielder?s two-run shot, his third of the season, put Huntsville up, 7-6. Fielder finished 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. The Stars? outstanding bullpen took care of the rest. John Novinsky (2-0) won for the second straight night, allowing one run on two hits in the seventh, and Ryan Miller and Roberto Giron shut down the Jaxx from there. Miller delivered two scoreless innings, fanning five and permitting two hits to continue his remarkable April: 12 innings pitched, one earned run allowed, 20 strikeouts. Giron returned from a sore back to pick up his third save in as many tries, fanning one while retiring all three batters he faced in his first appearance since April 12. Cabrera (0-1) absorbed the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1/3 inning. Game three of the series is Wednesday night at Pringles Park. Huntsville righty Dennis Sarfate (0-0, 5.63) faces Diamond Jaxx lefty Renyel Pinto (1-1, 3.09). Start time is 6:35 p.m., with the FPH Financial Pre-game Show beginning at 6:20 p.m.

  24. Mavs, 3-1 after four. Bo Hall pitches out of a huge Ozzie Chavez error-induced jam in the fourth. You know me, very rare I single a player out on the negative side, but I've listened to a fair share of Maverick games this year and last, and am still waiting for Ozzie to produce anything but miserable results or to show any baseball instinct whatsoever. I'm sure he'll have a huge rest of the game now... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Mavs are cruising here in the 5th, now 5-1, John Vandenberg with a two-run double, inning still rolling...
