  1. Yep. Dombrowski gave Sheffield a two year contract extension when he traded for him. He's given out a lot of poor contract extensions of late. I would not be surprised if Dontrelle Willis and/or Nate Robertson are released in the future. Both are making a lot of $$$, but neither is a major league pitcher.
  2. I was frustrated after the Royals sweep, but I find it kind of amusing now. They look like the bad news bears out there - can't hit, can't pitch, can't play defense. All you can do is laugh. It's just a game. But I will be shocked if they continue to be the worst team in baseball. Ordonez, Sheffield, Polanco, Cabrera, and Renteria have track records that suggest they are much, much better hitters than what they have shown so far. And Granderson should be back in the lineup soon. The pitching staff is questionable, as I thought before the season. (In fact, the bullpen has looked worse than I feared. We may be talking historically awful.) I'm not convinced they will make the playoffs, but I don't think they are one of the worst teams in the league. The only thing I am worried about things snowballing because of the poor start to the season, and players pressing to try to compensate. It may even be a good thing to get away from Comerica, as I have heard a lot of boos the past few games.
  3. If I read the article correctly, the contract buys out one arb year (2009) and 7 free agent years. Cabrera is close to FA, so I don't think the situation compares to that of Tulowitzki. If the Tigers were going to give out this big of a contract to any player, a young, elite hitter who still hasn't entered his prime is the exact type of player I would give the deal to. That's not to say I don't have reservations about the deal. Cabrera could be a fat DH in a few years, and I do have concerns about the rapidly expanding player payroll. But I do think Cabrera needed to be signed. The trade had no chance of being a good one in my mind if Cabrera was only a 2-year rental.
  4. That's a lot of cheeseburgers. Cabrera lost 15-20 pounds over the offseason. He doesn't look fat anymore IMO.
  5. Hello, Tigers fan here. I don't know too much about Chris Cody, but from what I understand, he's a soft tossing lefty. I don't really see Capellan as very good, but our bullpen is a disaster, one of the worst in MLB, so I think Dombrowski is trying to shake things up and hope someone can stick and do the job in the late innings. We have AAA type pitchers and Todd Jones, who is even worse, in our bullpen (and have been plauged by injuries), so I don't think Capellan can be any worse than the status quo.
  6. A lot of high draft picks hold out until the end of the summer to get as much money as they can. Rickie has a little leverage because he was a junior but he would be foolish not to sign with the Brewers. He will sign, don't worry about it. a lot of the guys who have already signed had pre-draft deals in place. Maybe it's a good thing for him to take a little time off from the game after his college season. He's probably waiting to see what Delmon Young does and with how cheap Tampa is who knows when that will get done.
  7. Nice job http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I saw that game on WGN and was delighted that the Brewers won. We have a Cubs troll who comes to our forum and we let him have it!
  8. I think you are making a big deal out of nothing. Eery year, so called "experts" make their mock drafts and in reality the draft ends up being totally different. For instance, I looked at the 2002 mock draft on this site and it was totally different than the actual draft. nobody would have ever gussed that Kazmir, a top five talent, would have fallen to pick number fifteen. In reality, these guys are making educated guesses. They are speculating because there is no way that organizations will let the word out on who they prefer to draft. Alos, don't get lost in the hype. If you've never seen any of these players, just trust the Brewer organization to choose the player on the board that they think is the best fit for the future of the organization. Some Brewer fans were unhappy that Fielder was drafted so highly, but now he looks really good.
  9. I will jump for joy if the Brewers pass on Young/ Weeks http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I know this is just a pipe dream; the Brewers would be foolish not to select whichever one Tampa doesn't. Stupid draft format ...
  10. True. I was really hoping that Milwaukee would draft Loewen and the Tigers could get Young or Weeks. This team is a miserable offensive team esp. with RISP. I only really want to see Young or Higginson at the plate in the clutch Harvey would be fine but, I have a feeling it will be Sleeth/Stauffer now. We have a bad track record with pitchers so I was really hoping we would focus on an offensive player. We could use a pitcher though too. I really wish Adam Bernero would leave the rotation; the rest have been impressive for being so young. I think that the Orioles just messed up a lot of team's drafts.
  11. Just click on the link to the story that is in the first post and read their comments. This makes me sick if true.
  12. This is the link: www.orioleshangout.com/cg...topic=7717 Check it out for yourself. PLEASE LET THIS BE A HOAX!!!!
  13. Orioleshangout.com is reporting that the Orioles did in fact sign Loewen. This is BAD BAD news if true. Is anybody hearing anything?
  14. Looks like Stauffer might have blown it (don't know how much this will affect his draft status): "Richmond righthander Tim Stauffer had his worst outing of the season last Thursday in front of two general managers and representatives of every team with a pick in Nos. 2-7 slots. Stauffer gave up seven runs in the first and eight runs (six earned) overall in six innings at North Carolina in a 10-0 loss. Stauffer was the victim of a tight strike zone, poor defense and his own inability to adjust to the tighter zone. He walked four after having walked just seven in 83 innings coming in, striking out six. He still has a 119-11 K-BB ratio. "I lost my release point and they made the adjustments at the plate," he said. "I'm not sure what it was. Maybe I was just rushing it a bit, and then I walked a guy or two and gave up a hit or two. I wasn't getting the low strike, but sometimes that's not going to get called. Usually in other games, teams try to hit me early in the count because I throw so many strikes, but they were really going deep in the count." Padres GM Kevin Towers, whose team picks fourth, and the Orioles' Beattie were both on hand, as were scouting directors and/or crosscheckers from the Brewers, Tigers, Padres, Royals, Cubs and Orioles"
  15. You may get your wish if Loewen doesn't sign with the Orioles. In a draft chat Baseball America said that the Devil Rays are considering only Delmon Young, Rickie Weeks and Ryan Harvey regardless of whether Loewen returns to the draft. The speculation is that Rickie Weeks is the favorite and the Devil Rays have certainly focused on position players of late (even though their pitching is awful.) Sources have said that the chances of the O's signing Loewen are 50/50. The Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, doesn't want to pay more than 2.5 million to him unless a strong case is made to go over that amount because of all of the money Angelos has paid out to pitchers that have amounted to nothing. Loewen wants 3.9 million at the least. My guess it that it goes down to the last minute whether he signs or doesn't. I think Loewen would be a good pick up for the Brewers. He is certainly worthy of the number two pick in the draft and you seem to have more offense in your organization than pitching.
  16. I guess am one of the few here who doesn't think Dmitri Young is a bad player. Consider that the Tigers offense is the worst in MLB by far and is filled with AAA players. Do you think opposing pitchers will let a proven career .300 batter like Young beat them? No; they are pitching around Dmitri. He's been hot with the bat lately. He's had a few monster games : 5-5 with 2HR, 2 3B, 1 1B and one where he was a homer short of the cycle. Dmitri Young is not a bad player. He is playing 3B when a left-hander is on the mound, but most nights he is the DH or LF. Delmon Young worked out for the D-Rays recently and the papers said he was hitting line shots all over the field. The Tigers were in town playing the D-Rays and our scouting director watched him as well. Everyone was really impressed. He looks like the real deal.
  17. It sure would be; we'd have to pick from the second tier of players in the scenario that Loewen signs with the O's. I'm hoping he doesn't so we get one of the consensus top three choices (Loewen, Weeks or Young). I'm convinced that the D-Rays will draft Rickie Weeks so I think the best case scenario for the Tigers is to draft Delmon Young (I know the organization likes him a lot). The offense is disgusting, the worst in MLB by far and the pitching has been good (6th in the AL in ERA), so the Tigers are really in need of a good bat. I guess Ryan Harvey is always there, but I'm not so sure about him.
