  1. Final: Mississippi 2 Huntsville 1 The Huntsville Stars wasted a decent pitching performance from starter Ariel Pena and 2 relievers, losing 2-1 to the Mississippi Braves Monday evening. Pena (7-9, 3.87) was tagged with the loss despite only allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5 over 5 innings. It was his 4th straight decent outing. Pena threw 81 pitches, 46 for strikes and posted a 3-3 GO/FO ratio. After Pena departed, righty Greg Holle came on to work 2 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Righty Eric Marzec came on and pitched the 8th. It was his 4th appearance in the last 5 games. He worked a 1-2-3 8th, lowering his ERA to 2.06. The pitching, again, put the Stars in a position to win a game. Unfortunately, the hitting did not come through. Huntsville Box Score For the 11th straight game, the Stars were held to 2 runs or less. Tonight, the offense was supplied by first baseman Jason Rogers. Rogers hit is league leading 22nd home run, driving in his league leading 85th run. The only other player to record a hit was second baseman Nick Shaw. He reached base 3 times, going 2-3 with a walk. Third baseman Mike Walker drew a walk, as did Chadwin Stang in a pinch hit role. Chadwin also stole his 5th base on the season. As a team, the Stars struck out 12 times for the 2nd straight game. Huntsville Play By Play Jason Rogers as the one man rally in the 7th. Huntsville Top of the 7th Jason Rogers homers (22) on a line drive to left field. Mike Walker grounds out, pitcher Gus Schlosser to first baseman Christian Marrero. Brock Kjeldgaard flies out to center fielder Mycal Jones. Shawn Zarraga grounds out, second baseman Barrett Kleinknecht to first baseman Christian Marrero. Huntsvile (27-37 second half, 56-76 overall) will play their final road game on the season Tuesday night as they take on the Mississippi Braves. Righty Brooks Hall (2-4, 4.10) will look to extend his late season run as he takes the mound for the Stars. Game time is set for 7:00 Central. You can tune in starting at 6:45 to hear the Voice Of The Stars Alex Cohen and the pregame show. This game is the last game for the Stars that will be available on MiLB TV. 2. Final: Mississippi 6 Huntsville 2 Mississippi took advantage of starter Taylor Jungmann's control problems to build a lead and cruised to a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon. Jungmann (9-10, 4.38) only lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 3 hits and 7 walks while striking out 1. The 7 walks were a season high. Jungmann now has 72 walks to 79 strikeouts on the season. Taylor saw his ERA jump to 4.38. Jungmann threw 80 pitches, 43 for strikes. He did post a 7-2 GO/FO ratio. With Jungmann having a short start, the bullpen was needed to cover 4 2/3 innings. Frankie De La Cruz was first out of the pen. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing an earned run on 3 hits. Next was Micah Owings. He worked a 1-2-3 inning striking out 1. Owings has now worked 5 scoreless innings, striking out 9. The hitting side, not so good (1-27). Michael Olmsted also threw a 1-2-3 inning striking out 1. The Brewers plan to send Olmsted down to have some success to build on going into the off season seems to be working so far. Finally Eric Marzec pitched a perfect 8th inning, striking out 1. Huntsville Box Score Another game, another 2 runs for the Stars, the 10 straight scoring 2 runs or less. Tonight, both runs scored on an 8th inning 2 run home run from Brock Kjeldgaard. It was Kjeldgaard's 21st home run on the season, tying teammate Jason Rogers for the team and league lead. Today, Rogers didn't record a hit, but did draw a walk and stole his 7th base on the season. Third baseman Mike Walker had a perfect day at the plate, going 1-1 with 3 walks and a run scored. Nick Shaw, Eric Patterson, and Hector Gomez each singled for the Stars. Catcher Joey Paciorek drew a walk tonight for Huntsville. Huntsville Play By Play Huntsville's lone highlight came in the 8th. Huntsville Top of the 8th Pitching Change: Thomas Keeling replaces James Hoyt, batting 9th. Jason Rogers lines out to left fielder Robby Hefflinger. Mike Walker walks. Brock Kjeldgaard homers (21) on a fly ball to center field. Mike Walker scores. Eric Patterson strikes out swinging. Joey Paciorek walks. Defensive switch from first base to shortstop for Omar Luna. Pitching Change: Shae Simmons replaces Thomas Keeling, batting 7th. Defensive Substitution: Christian Marrero replaces pitcher Thomas Keeling, batting 9th, playing first base. Hector Gomez strikes out swinging. Huntsville (27-36 second half, 56-75 overall) and Mississippi will play game 4 of this 5 game series tomorrow night. Ariel Pena (7-8, 3.88) will be on the hill for the Stars. He will be looking to extend his recent run of good starts. Game time is set for 7:00 Central. Don't forget to join Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen starting at 6:45 for the pregame show. This game will be available on MiLB TV for those with a subscription. 3. Really hope the Brewers can find a place for him after his playing days are done. Such a funny dude bro.
  4. I see a couple players I'd like to see back. I think Eugenio Velez can be a helpful player. He can fill that 25th man roster spot in the big leagues or can really help out the AAA team because of all the different positions he can play. Same for Micah Owings. If he can be a 2 way player, that could really help out with roster management. So far, he's doing well on the mound and can't buy a hit at the plate. Brock Kjeldgaard has as much power as anyone in the organization. His defense, arm specifically, has been good. He currently leads Huntsville in walks. The downside, he also leads them in strike outs. Hector Gomez has been mentioned as the best fielding shortstop in the organization. 14 errors though... Still, he was a top prospect recently. He's had some injury and off field issues. I'd like to see him get another year, see if he can get it turned around. He's not blocking anyone either. Anderson De La Rosa seems to have a standing invitation to return. If Dustin Molleken continues to throw the way he has so far, he'd be an interesting arm to bring back.

  6. Final: Huntsville 2 Mississippi 0 The Huntsville Stars turned the tables on the Mississippi Braves and delivered their own 2-0 shutout Saturday night. The Stars got 5 shutout innings from starter Andy Moye. Over those 5 innings, Moye (6-14, 4.00) gave up 4 hits, no walks and struck out 3. In the process, he lowered his ERA to an even 4. Moye is facing an innings limit through the end of the season otherwise he would have continued on as he only threw 64 pitches, 40 for strikes in earning his 6th win on the season. Moye also put up a 5-3 GO/FO ratio. The Stars then got 4 innings of 1 hit relief from their bullpen. Arcenio Leon pitched a scoreless 6th, allowing a hit and a walk. David Goforth was especially impressive tonight. He worked 2 scoreless innings, 6 up, 6 down. He recorded 2 strike outs and hit 98 on the radar gun! His family was in town for the game so perhaps he was a little amped up? Finally, Kevin Shackelford came on to close things out. He pitched a scoreless 9th, walking 1 and striking out 1. It was Shackelford's 5th save on the season. His ERA now sits at 1.07 (3 earned runs in 25 1/3 innings). Huntsville Box Score For the 9th straight game, the Stars were held to 2 runs or less. Tonight, both runs scored in the 5th, thanks to a booming home run from Jason Rogers. Rogers also singled in the first and drew a walk in the 9th to reach base 3 times. Rogers is tied for the league lead in home runs at 21 and leads the league in RBI's with 84. With the 2 hits, Jason pushed his average back to .270. Also collecting 2 hits tonight was shortstop Hector Gomez and second baseman Nick Shaw. Gomez went 2-4 with a double and Shaw was 2-5 with 2 singles. Chadwin Stang went 1-4 with a double and pitcher Andy Moye had the Stars other extra base hit, going 1-2 with a double and a run scored. Shea Vucinich had the Stars other hit, a bunt single in the 6th. Right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard didn't record a hit, but did draw 2 walks, increasing his team lead to 64. Pitcher David Goforth drew a 4 pitch walk in the 9th. Huntsville Play By Play All the offense came in the 5th. Huntsville Top of the 5th Andy Moye doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Robby Hefflinger. Chadwin Stang strikes out swinging, catcher Christian Bethancourt to first baseman Christian Marrero. Nick Shaw pops out to shortstop Jaime Pedroza. Jason Rogers homers (21) on a fly ball to left field. Andy Moye scores. Brock Kjeldgaard flies out to center fielder Greg Golson. Game 3 of the series will be played tomorrow afternoon. Taylor Jungmann will look to get back on track after a couple rough outings recently, as he takes the hill for the Stars. Game time is set for 5:00 Central. You can join the Voice Of The Stars, Alex Cohen starting at 4:45 for the pregame show. This game will be available on MiLB TV for those with a subscription. 7. Stars Shutout in Series Opener With M-Braves By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars To open up a five-game set at Trustmark Park and their final road trip of 2013, the Huntsville Stars beat the Mississippi Braves by a score of 2-1 on Friday night. For the M-Braves, they got things started off in the first inning against Stars starting pitcher Drew Gagnon. Following a two-out double by second baseman Tommy LaStella and a walk drawn by third basemen Edward Salcedo, both runners would a score on a two-run double from outfielder Jose Martinez to make the score 2-0. Those early runs were plenty for the Mississippi pitching staff. Starting pitcher Michael Lee turned in an impressive scoreless seven innings while giving eight hits to improve to 9-8 on the season. The victory for Lee and the shutout for the M-Braves were both insured by an inning of relief from righty Juan Jaime and a scoreless ninth from righty Ryne Harper. The shutout marks the third time in the last eleven games that the Stars have been blanked by an opponent. Huntsville has now scored just 17 runs in their last 12 games and has been held to two runs or less in a game for the last seven straight contests. Despite the shutout, the Stars outhit the M-Braves by a 9-7 margin. Huntsville was led by outfielder Eric Patterson with two hits, his second straight multi-hit game. The Stars left 11 runners on base and were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Mississippi tacked on their two other insurance runs in the sixth inning with a RBI double from outfielder Robby Hefflinger and a RBI single by shortstop Jamie Pedroza. All four runs of the ballgame were tabbed to Gagnon, who fell to 4-8 on the year with the loss after tossing 5.2 innings while giving up seven hits and striking out four batters. Aside from Gagnon, righties Eric Marzec, Michael Olmsted and Frankie De La Cruz combined to toss 2.1 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball. On Saturday, the Stars will play game two of a five-game set against the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (5-14, 4.17 ERA) to the hill to try to get back on the winning track while Mississippi will counter with LHP Ian Thomas (7-7, 2.80 ERA). First pitch is at 6:00 PM.
  8. Final: Mississippi 4 Huntsville 0 The Stars late season woes continued Friday night as they were shutout by the Mississippi Braves 4-0. The Stars have now lost 8 of their last 11 games and haven't scored more than 4 runs in a game since August 7th. In fact, over their last 11 games, they have scored a total of 17 runs. Tonight, Drew Gagnon got the start for Huntsville. He struggled in 2 innings, the first and the sixth, allowing 2 runs in each inning. He wasn't able to make it out of the 6th tonight. Gagnon (4-8, 5.58) took the loss, working 5 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs, all earned, on 7 hit and 3 walks while striking out 4. Gagnon threw 96 pitches tonight, 58 for strikes and had a 5-5 GO/FO ratio. After getting into trouble in the 6th, Eric Marzec was called on to get the Stars out of the jam. He came on with 2 on and 2 outs and proceeded to record a strike out to end the inning. That would be the only batter he would face tonight. Michael Olmsted came on and pitched a scoreless 7th. He walked one and struck out 2. Frankie De La Cruz worked a 1-2-3 8th, striking out 1. Huntsville Box Score The Stars offense outhit the Braves 9-7 but were unable to get that clutch hit to drive in runs. Twice they had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and didn't score. Eric Patterson paced the Stars, going 2-5. He was the only Stars hitter to record more than 1 hit. Mike Walker and Shea Vucinich each had a double, the Stars only extra base hits tonight. Walker also drew a walk. Micah Owings got his first hit with the Stars tonight. He also drew a walk. Nick Shaw returned after missing nearly 2 games with a leg/foot injury and singled. The Stars also got singles from Brock Kjeldgaard, Shawn Zarraga, and pitcher Drew Gagnon. Huntsville Play By Play 2 big chances that went for naught. Huntsville Top of the 6th Mike Walker doubles (14) on a line drive to left fielder Robby Hefflinger. Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a ground ball to second baseman Tommy La Stella. Shawn Zarraga out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Michael Lee to second baseman Tommy La Stella. Mike Walker to 3rd. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd. Micah Owings pops out to shortstop Jaime Pedroza. Hector Gomez flies out to right fielder Jose Martinez. Huntsville Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Ryne Harper replaces Juan Jaime, batting 9th. Micah Owings walks. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Chadwin Stang replaces Frankie De La Cruz. Chadwin Stang strikes out swinging. Shea Vucinich doubles (11) on a fly ball to left fielder Robby Hefflinger. Micah Owings to 3rd. Eric Patterson lines out to third baseman Edward Salcedo. Nick Shaw strikes out swinging. The Stars (26-35 second half, 55-74 overall) will look to get things turned around when the face the Mississippi Braves Saturday night. Righty Andy Moye (5-14, 4.17) will be on the hill for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:00 Central with the Voice Of The Stars, Alex Cohen kicking things off at 5:45 with the pregame show. This game will be available on MiLB TV for those with a subscription. Remember, you can turn down the TV sound and turn up the Stars broadcast.
  9. Final: Huntsville 2 Pensacola 1 Huntsville avoided a series sweep Thursday evening, squeaking out a 2-1 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at The Joe. Stars starter Brooks Hall had another tremendous start. He worked 5 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Hall now has a streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings. He has lowered his ERA to 4.10. Tonight, Hall threw 66 pitches, 44 for strikes and put up a 5-3 GO/FO ratio. The Huntsville bullpen worked 4 strong innings tonight, helping lead the Stars to victory. Eric Marzec worked 1 2/3 innings tonight. He gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk. Righty Arcenio Leon came on to finish the 7th, working 1/3 of an inning, allowing nothing. Greg Holle worked a scoreless 8th, despite allowing a hit and a walk. Casey Medlen worked a 1-2-3 9th to earn his 8th save of the season. Huntsville Box Score Once again the Huntsville offense was held to under 3 runs, but tonight, the pitching made the offense stand up. The Stars had 8 hits and 3 walks leading to 2 runs. They were led by left fielder Eric Patterson. Patterson went 3-4 with a double and a run score. His double was the first, and only, extra base hit the Stars would have in this series. Third baseman Mike Walker went 2-4 tonight, the only other batter with more than 1 hit in tonight's game. First baseman Jason Rogers was 1-3 with a walk and his league leading 82nd RBI. Shortstop Hector Gomez scored the Stars other run tonight. He ended the game going 1-3. Catcher Shawn Zarraga had the Stars other base hit tonight. Shea Vucinich and Brock Kjeldgaard each drew a walk for Huntsville. Huntsville Play By Play Just like yesterday, the game winning run scored on a wild pitch. Huntsville Bottom of the 7th Hector Gomez singles on a line drive to center fielder Ryan LaMarre. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Micah Owings replaces Arcenio Leon. Micah Owings out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Loek Van Mil to first baseman Mike Costanzo. Hector Gomez to 2nd. Chadwin Stang flies out to right fielder Theo Bowe. Hector Gomez to 3rd. With Eric Patterson batting, wild pitch by Loek Van Mil, Hector Gomez scores. Eric Patterson singles on a line drive to right fielder Theo Bowe. Jason Rogers strikes out swinging. Huntsville (26-34 second half, 55-73 overall) starts their final road trip tomorrow evening, taking on the Mississippi Braves in Pearl, Mississippi. Righty Drew Gagnon (4-7, 5.52) will take the mound for the Stars. Game time is set for 7:00 Central. Don't forget to tune in starting at 6:45 to hear the pregame show with the Voice Of The Stars, Alex Cohen.
  10. Stars Shutout, Lose in Extras to Blue Wahoos By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars After being losing the first four games of their series at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in 11 innings by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The loss spoiled a tremendous outing from Stars starting pitcher Ariel Pena. A winner of his last two starts, Pena tossed seven scoreless frames while giving up just four hits. He also struck out eight batters, his second highest total of the season. Over his last three starts, the Brewers 17th ranked prospect (per MLB.com) has given up just two earned runs in 18 innings pitched. While the 24-year-old righty had one of his best starts of the season, Blue Wahoos starter Josh Smith went toe-to-toe with Pena. Smith tossed 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four batters. He now leads the entire Southern League in strikeouts with 130. Both Pena and Smith earned no decisions. Aside from Pena, Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford also tossed three scoreless frames. In the seventh inning, the Stars squandered their biggest scoring opportunity against Pensacola righty Jamie Walczak. With the bases-loaded and one out, shortstop Hector Gomez flew out to centerfield and Shawn Zarraga was gunned out trying to advance from second to third before the run from third could tag up and score to end the inning. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the eleventh inning, where Pensacola tacked on the only run of the game against Stars righty David Goforth (L, 4-3). After a leadoff single from Blue Wahoos outfielder Ryan LaMarre, a sac bunt and a groundout put the potential go-ahead run just 90 feet away with two outs. With outfielder Yorman Rodriguez at the plate, Goforth threw a wild pitch that allowed LaMarre to score without a throw as the game-winning run. Pensacola ensured their fifth straight victory when closer Trevor Bell notched his third save of the series and 15th save of the season with a scoreless bottom of the eleventh inning. For the Stars, first basemen Jason Rogers paced the offense with two of the Stars five total hits. The defeat for the Stars marks their fifth loss in a row and seventh shutout of the season. Huntsville has also scored two runs or less in each of the last six contests. On Thursday, the Stars will try to avoid the series sweep against the Blue Wahoos with the finale of a six-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send RHP Brooks Hall (2-5, 4.53 ERA) to the hill while the Pensacola will counter with RHP Robert Stephenson (0-1, 3.00 ERA). Stephenson is the top prospect in the Reds organization and a consensus top-20 prospect in all of minor league baseball. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.
  11. Final: Pensacola 1 Huntsville 0 (11 innings) Huntsville and Pensacola locked up in a real pitchers duel Wednesday afternoon. It took a blown call against the Stars and an 11th inning wild pitch to allow the only run of the game to score. The Stars recent offense woes continued and cost Ariel Pena today. Pena (7-8, 3.88) pitched one of his better games today. Very reminiscent of the way he pitched back in May. Today, Pena worked 7 very strong innings, allowing no runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch while striking out 8. Pena threw 94 pitches, 54 for strikes. His GO/FO ratio was 5-1. For the season, Pena is up to 132.1 innings. He has 2 starts left, if he stays on schedule. Last season, he threw 146.2 combined between the Angels and Brewers systems. So a couple more starts like today and he will be right there again. Even with Pena going 7 innings, the bullpen still had to cover 4 innings. Kevin Shackelford covered 3 innings. He continued his strong play since his promotion. Over those 3 innings, Shackelford allowed only 2 hits and struck out 2. Kevin also posted a 5-2 GO/FO ratio. His ERA with Huntsville now sits at 1.11 and over his last 10 outings, covering 16 innings, he's only allowed 1 earned run. For the majority of his college career, Shackelford was a catcher, so in terms of pitching, he has a "young" arm. He's been impressive. David Goforth was brought on to pitch the 9th. A bloop, a sacrifice bunt, and a grounder to the right side put a runner on 3rd with 2 outs. A wild pitch allowed the run to score. Very disappointing way for this game to end. Goforth (4-3, 3.46) allowed the 1 run on 1 hit. Huntsville Box Score Over 11 innings, the Stars were held to 5 hits and 4 walks. It appeared the Stars took the lead in the bottom of the 7th. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Hector Gomez hit a fly ball. Jason Rogers at 3rd and Shawn Zarraga at 2nd both tagged up. After the catch, the throw came in to 3rd and got Zarraga out. The home plate umpire ruled that Zarraga was tagged out before Rogers crossed the plate, so the run didn't count. Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen called it immediately a blown call. He asked the official scorer between innings and the scorer also said Rogers scored before Zarraga was tagged out. He said it wasn't even close. This was the only real threat the Stars put into scoring today. And the way the pitchers were throwing today, that one run would likely have stood up. Rogers was the only Stars hitter to record more than 1 hit, going 2-5 and in the process pushing his average up to .270. A strong finish could see Rogers get up to .275-.280. Shawn Zarraga, Nick Shaw, and Chadwin Stang had the other singles for the Stars. Brock Kjeldgaard didn't start today but came on in a double switch. He had 2 plate appearances and walked both times. Rene Tosoni and Hector Gomez each drew a walk. Just an idea of how rough it's been for the Stars offense, they don't have an extra base hit this entire series and haven't had one since Shawn Zarraga doubled in the 2nd inning of the last game against Mobile on August 17th. As noted in an earlier post, Nick Shaw left the game in the 1st after fouling a ball off his leg/ankle/foot. He stayed in the game long enough to single but was limping noticeably running down to first and was lifted at that point. There was no update on his condition that I heard through the end of the game. Huntsville (25-34 second half, 54-73 overall) and Pensacola will play game 6 of this series tomorrow evening. Brooks Hall is scheduled to start for the Stars. He'll look to continue his strong pitching as of late. Game time is set for 6:43 Central. Make sure to tune in starting at 6:28 to catch the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen and the pregame show.
  12. Nick Shaw fouled a ball off his foot during his first at bat. He stayed in the game long enough to single, but Alex Cohen noted Shaw was limping noticeably on his way down to first. He was lifted at that point. There was no update I heard during the remainder of the broadcast.
  13. Final: Pensacola 8 Huntsville 1 Pensacola dominated Huntsville from the start and defeated the Stars 8-1 to extend the Stars losing streak to 4. Taylor Jungmann took the mound to start for Huntsville. Jungmann (9-9, 4.14) lasted 5 innings, allowing 5 runs, all earned on 7 hits 2 walks, and a hit batter while striking out 2. He allowed a home run and uncorked a wild pitch. The loss is Jungmann's 3rd straight and it pushed his season ERA over 4. Taylor threw 86 pitches tonight, 45 for strikes. With probably 2 starts left in his season, Jungmann is sitting at 130 innings. Last season he threw 153 for Brevard County. Possibly setting up for the Arizona Fall League? Manager Darnell Coles used 4 different pitchers to cover the last 4 innings after Jungmann departed. Michael Olmsted worked a 1-2-3 6th, throwing 12 pitches. Greg Holle struggled with the 7th. He allowed 3 earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk. He also threw a wild pitch. Holle's rough outing also pushed his season ERA over 4. Arcenio Leon pitched the 8th. He didn't allow a run but did give up 2 hits. David Goforth had the 9th. He was a bit of a struggle, but he didn't allow a run but did give up a hit and walked a batter. He also threw a wild pitch. Huntsville Box Score Once again, the Huntsville bats were silenced by the Blue Wahoos pitchers. For the 5th straight game, the Stars were held to 2 runs or less. Tonight, their only run scored in the 3rd on a Jason Rogers sacrifice fly. The RBI was Rogers's Southern League leading 81st. Rogers added a single in the 8th and has his average up to .269. Chadwin Stang reached base 3 times for the Stars and scored the Stars run. Stang was 2-4 and drew a walk. Shortstop Hector Gomez also had 2 hits, going 2-4. Second baseman Nick Shaw and catcher Joey Paciorek had the Stars other hits, both singles. Right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard didn't record a hit, but did draw 2 walks. Eric Patterson also drew a walk in a pinch hit appearance. Huntsville Play By Play The always exciting sacrifice fly highlight. Huntsville Bottom of the 3rd Chadwin Stang singles on a ground ball to center fielder Ryan LaMarre. Nick Shaw singles on a ground ball to right fielder Brandon Short. Chadwin Stang to 3rd. Jason Rogers out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Brandon Short. Chadwin Stang scores. Rene Tosoni grounds out, shortstop Devin Lohman to first baseman Mike Costanzo. Nick Shaw to 2nd. Brock Kjeldgaard walks. Mike Walker flies out to left fielder Theo Bowe. Huntsville (25-33 second half, 54-72 overall) and Pensacola will play game 5 of this 6 game series tomorrow afternoon. The game will feature the Stars "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" promotion. I didn't know Huntsville had an art museum. Give it a read, it sounds interesting. Game time is set for 1:03 Central. Righty Ariel Pena (7-8, 4.09) is scheduled to start for the Stars. Make sure to tune in starting at 12:48 to catch Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen with the pregame show.
  14. Final: Pensacola 3 Huntsville 2 (Game 2, Completed Early) Pensacola completed the sweep of the double header, winning the nightcap 3-2. The game was called in the top of the 7th when the rains showed up again. Pensacola now has won the first 3 games of this 6 game series. For the Stars, Frankie De La Cruz was called upon to start. He was only able to work 3 innings. The first 2 innings were 6 up and 6 down. Then he was tagged for 3 runs in the top of the 3rd. De La Cruz (1-4, 5.40) finished with a line of 3 innings, 3 runs, all earned, on 2 hits and 2 walks. De La Cruz uncorked a wild pitch and one of the 2 hit he allowed was a solo home run. De La Cruz threw 46 pitches, 28 for strikes in this spot start. With De La Cruz working 3 innings, the Stars bullpen needed to cover the remaining 4. Arcenio Leon was first out of the pen. He worked 1 scoreless innings, striking out 1. Next up was Casey Medlen. Casey worked 2 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 1. Finally, Kevin Shackelford was brought in to pitch the 7th. He was only able to get 1 out before the rains came. Huntsville Box Score After being held to 1 run on 2 hits in the opener, the Stars were able to knock out 6 hits but only 2 runs in the night cap. No Stars hitter recorded more than 1 hit. First baseman Jason Rogers did single and draw a walk to reach base twice. He also scored a run. Shortstop Hector Gomez was 1-3 with an RBI. Eric Patterson scored the other Stars run tonight. 15. Final: Pensacola 2 Huntsville 1 (Game 1) Huntsville and Pensacola engaged in a good old fashioned pitchers duel in game 1 of their double header today. The two teams combined for 3 runs and 5 hits. Unfortunately, the Stars came out on the short end of it. Stars starter Andy Moye worked game 1 tonight. Moye (5-14 4.17) was the hard luck loser for the Stars. Andy worked 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. Home runs, which have been an issue for Moye this season, was an issue again tonight as the Blue Wahoos first run was scored on a solo home run. Moye only threw 66 pitches, 40 for strikes. 18. Final: Huntsville 2 Mobile 0 The Huntsville Stars got stellar pitching and just enough hitting to defeat the Mobile Bay Bears 2-0 Saturday night at The Joe. Stars starter Brooks Hall had a very strong outing. Hall (2-4, 4.53) picked up his 2nd win on the season. He worked 5 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. It took him 73 pitches, 46 for strikes to complete those 5 innings. Hall had a perfect 10-0 GO/FO ratio. Probably the best outing for Hall since his promotion. Next, Greg Holle worked a perfect 8th inning, picking up 2 strike outs. Finally, David Goforth pitched a 1-2-3 9th, striking out 1, to notch his 2nd save in as many days, and his 4th on the season. 20. Final: Mobile 10 Huntsville 4 A night after being no-hit, Stars pitching gives up 13 hits and 6 walks leading to 10 runs as the Mobile Bay Bears cruised to their 2nd consecutive victory, defeating the Huntsville Stars 10-4 Thursday night at The Joe. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann failed to make it through 5 innings. Jungmann (9-8, 3.95) was touched up for 6 runs, 5 earned on 8 hits and 5 walks while striking out 2. Jungmann also hit a batter and committed a balk. Taylor threw 99 pitches tonight, 55 for strikes. He also put up a 6-2 GO/FO ratio. Jungmann has not earned a victory now since July 6th. Jungmann's short outing meant the Stars needed 4 2/3 innings of relief from their bullpen. Frankie De La Cruz was called on first. He worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs, all earned, on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. Arcenio Leon was next. He worked 2 perfect innings, striking out 1. Finally, Kevin Shackelford was called on and he put together a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out 2 in the process. Huntsville Box Score After being no-hit last night, the Stars were able to knock out 10 hits tonight. They were led by third baseman Joey Paciorek. Paciorek went 2-3 with a walk. Paciorek doubled, scored run and drove in another. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa also had 2 hits, going 2-4 with a double and scoring a run. 21. Final: Mobile 2 Huntsville 0 (Combined No Hitter For Mobile) The Huntsville Stars were on the wrong side of history Wednesday night as 5 Mobile pitchers combined to No-Hit the Stars at The Joe. Arizona Diamondbacks top prospect Archie Bradley started for the Bay Bears and worked 5 hitless innings. He was followed to the mound by Matt Gorgen, Derek Eitel, Willy Paredes, and Jake Barrett who each pitched 1 hitless inning. It was the first time the Stars have been No-Hit since the 2005 season. The No-Hitter took away from Stars pitchers tonight as they allowed only 2 unearned runs and 7 hits. Starter Andy Moye, who had his last start cut short due to rain, came out and pitched one of his best games of the season. Moye (5-13, 4.20) pitched 6 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. He posted a sterling 12-1 GO/FO ratio and of the 75 pitches he threw, 51 were for strikes. Despite all that, he still was saddled with the loss, his Southern League leading 13th. The Stars got 3 innings of relief from their bullpen tonight, starting with Greg Holle. Holle worked the 7th and allowed an unearned run on 1 hit and 1 walk. Righty Micah Owings worked a scoreless 8th allowing a hit and striking out 2. Owings has now pitched 3 innings for the Stars and has recorded 7 strikeouts of the 9 outs he's recorded. Coincidentally, Owings has been to the plate 9 times as a hitter and struck out 7 times. Weird. Finally, Casey Medlen worked the 9th, allowing a hit. Huntsville Box Score Offensively, there isn't much that can be said. The Stars were no hit. The Bay Bears made a couple of diving plays to take away hits, which usually happens in No-Hitters. The Stars drew 6 walks for their only baserunners. Mike Walker drew 2 and Chadwin Stang, Jason Rogers, Hector Gomez, and pitcher Andy Moye each walked once. The No-Hitter also ended Rogers' hitting streak at 6 games. Huntsville Play By Play Huntsville (23-28 second half, 52-67 overall) will look to bounce back tomorrow night as they take on the Bay Bears in game 3 of this 5 game series. Righty Taylor Jungmann (9-7, 3.72) looks like he would be the probable starter for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen starting things off at 6:30 with the pre game show.
  22. Final: Huntsville 4 Mobile 3 The Stars scored 2 runs in the 7th to defeat the Mobile Bay Bears 4-3 Tuesday night at The Joe. Third baseman Mike Walker again had a clutch hit, this time a 2 out, 2 run triple in the 7th to lift the Stars to victory. Huntsville got good pitching again tonight, beginning with starter Drew Gagnon. Gagnon, who was coming off his best AA performance last time out, worked 6 innings tonight, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks while striking out 4. He was credited with giving up 2 home runs, but the 2nd home run was seen as foul by everyone but the umpire staff. It took Gagnon 87 pitches, 45 strikes, to cover 6 innings and he put up a 5-3 GO/FO ratio. With Gagnon working 6, the Stars needed 3 innings from their bullpen. Eric Marzec (5-0, 2.17) gave them 1 scoreless inning. He worked the 7th and allowed no runs on 1 hit, earning the win. Righty David Goforth worked the 8th and 9th scoreless and picked up his 2nd save on the season. Goforth allowed 2 hits but struck out 3 over his 2 innings of work. Huntsville Box Score The Stars were held to only 7 hits tonight, but made the most out of them, scoring 4 runs. They were led by Jason Rogers, who was on base 3 times tonight. Rogers went 2-3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored. Jason now has a 6 game hitting streak going and is 9-17 (.529) over those 6 games. Second baseman Nick Shaw was the only other Stars hitter with more than one hit. Shaw went 2-4 and scored once. Mike Walker had the big blow, the 2 out, 2 run triple to give the Stars the winning margin. He also drew a walk. Right fielder Rene Tosoni was 1-2 with an RBI prior to being ejected. His replacement, Eric Patterson, had 2 plate appearances and walked both times, scoring once. The Stars only other hit came from shortstop Hector Gomez. Gomez has now hit safely in 7 of his last 10 games. Huntsville Play By Play Big 7th inning rally. Huntsville Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Bryan Woodall replaces Blake Cooper, batting 9th, replacing Sawyer Carroll. Nick Shaw strikes out swinging. Jason Rogers singles on a ground ball to pitcher Bryan Woodall. With Eric Patterson batting, Jason Rogers steals (6) 2nd base. Eric Patterson walks. Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging. Pitching Change: Steve Garrison replaces Bryan Woodall, batting 9th. Mike Walker triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Keon Broxton. Jason Rogers scores. Eric Patterson scores. Pitching Change: Willy Paredes replaces Steve Garrison, batting 9th. Anderson De La Rosa grounds out, shortstop Mike Freeman to first baseman Nick Evans. The Stars (23-27 second half, 52-66 overall) and Bay Bears will go at it again tomorrow night. Righty Taylor Jungmann (9-7, 3.72) is scheduled to take the mound for Huntsville. Game time is set for 6:43 Central at The Joe. Make sure you tune in starting at 6:28 to catch Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen and the pregame show.
  23. Final: Huntsville 4 Chattanooga 0 Four Huntsville pitchers combined to throw the Stars 7th shutout of the season, a 4-0 whitewashing of the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday Afternoon. It was the Stars first blanking since July 18th against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The Stars got 5 scoreless innings from starter Ariel Pena. Pena (6-8, 4.15) has been struggling as of late. Today, he allowed only 4 hits but walked 5 while striking out 4. Walks have been an issue all season for Pena. His 72 issued lead the Southern League. Pena threw 85 pitches, 46 for strikes and posted a nice 6-1 GO/FO ratio. The win today was the first for Pena since May 29th. Brooks Hall was first out of the bullpen today. Hall, normally a starter, was skipped in the rotation this time around to work on his innings limit. Hall went 2 innings today, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out 1. He also had a 4-0 GO/FO ratio. Next, Casey Medlen pitched a scoreless 8th. He allowed a hit and walked 1 while striking out 1. Hard throwing righty Kevin Shackelford pitched the 9th. He allowed a hit while striking out 1. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville was able to parlay 11 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batter into only 4 runs Sunday afternoon, but it was enough. Jason Rogers again was a monster at the plate. Bones went 2-3, both hits doubles, drove in 1 and walked twice. The RBI was Rogers' league leading 79th. He now has a 5 game hitting streak. Over those 5 games, Rogers is hitting .500 (7-14) with 2 doubles, a home run, 5 RBI's, 2 stolen bases, a sacrifice fly, and 8 walks drawn. Those sound like Player Of The Week numbers to me. He's pushed his season average up to .261. Shortstop Hector Gomez led all Stars hitters with 3 hits today including a double. Gomez scored once and drove in one as well. Chadwin Stang contributed 2 hits and a walk along with his 7th RBI. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa continued his hot hitting since arriving from Nashville. De La Rosa went 2-5 with a double and a run scored. He's batting .350 now for the Stars. Rene Tosoni and Eric Patterson each contributed a hit today. Patterson's hit was a double. He also stole his 2nd base with the Stars. Tosoni added a walk as well. Huntsville Play By Play Who would have thought the run Huntsville scored in the 3rd would be the game winner? Huntsville Top of the 3rd Hector Gomez doubles (10) on a fly ball to left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez. Ariel Pena grounds out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to first baseman Angelo Songco. Hector Gomez to 3rd. Chadwin Stang singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Jon Garcia. Hector Gomez scores. Nick Shaw grounds into a force out, shortstop Miguel Rojas to second baseman Rafael Ynoa. Chadwin Stang out at 2nd. Nick Shaw to 1st. Rene Tosoni singles on a line drive to center fielder Joc Pederson. Nick Shaw to 2nd. Jason Rogers walks. Nick Shaw to 3rd. Rene Tosoni to 2nd. Mike Walker grounds into a force out, second baseman Rafael Ynoa to shortstop Miguel Rojas. Jason Rogers out at 2nd. Huntsville (22-27 second half, 51-66 overall) has tomorrow off before returning to action Tuesday night. They will open a 5 game series with the Mobile Bay Bears at The Joe. Righty Drew Gagnon (4-6, 5.61), coming off his best performance with the Stars, will be on the hill for the Stars. Game time is set for 6:43 Central with the Voice of the Stars, Alex Cohen kicking things off at 6:28 with the pregame show.
  24. Final: Huntsville 3 Chattanooga 2 The Stars came from behind to win the regularly scheduled game 3-2 over the Chattanooga Lookouts. The Stars were down to their final strike when third baseman Mike Walker ripped a 2 run double to give the Stars the late lead. It was only the Stars 2 hit of the game. Thanks to solid pitching, they were in a position to make a comeback like that. The Stars got a good start from Taylor Jungmann tonight. Taylor had a rough 1st inning, but settled down to give the Stars 5 innings. Over those 5 innings, Jungmann allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 1. Both runs scored in the 1st on a 2 out, 2 run home run. Jungmann threw 76 pitches, 37 for strikes and had a sparkling 10-1 GO/FO ratio. Again, the walks stand out, especially for someone that was not known for allowing many in the past. Righty Greg Holle worked 1 inning of relief and was credited with the win. In his inning, Holle (4-3, 3.95) didn't allow a run or hit but did walk 2. Holle had a 2-0 GO/FO ratio. David Goforth worked a scoreless 9th to pick up his first save with the Stars. Goforth walked 2, so it wasn't a clean inning, and struck out 1. Goforth also put together a 2-0 GO/FO ratio giving the team a 14-1 combined ratio. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville had fewer hits than runs tonight in their win. Held to 2 hits, they made both hits hurt. Jason Rogers slugged his 20th home run on the season and drove in his 78 RBI. Both lead the Southern League. Rogers then drew a walk in the 7th, as did right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard to set the stage for Mike Walker's heroics. Both were able to score when Walker doubled with 2 strikes and 2 outs in the 7th. Those 3 were the only base runners the Stars had tonight. All 5 runs scored in this game scored with 2 outs. Weird. Huntsville Play By Play Jason Rogers gets the Stars on the board Huntsville Top of the 4th Chadwin Stang bunt grounds out, pitcher Andres Santiago to first baseman J. T. Wise. Nick Shaw grounds out to first baseman J. T. Wise. Jason Rogers homers (20) on a line drive to left field. Rene Tosoni strikes out swinging. Walker's game winning double in the 7th Huntsville Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Yimi Garcia replaces Andres Santiago, batting 6th, replacing third baseman Elevys Gonzalez. Defensive Substitution: Sean Burroughs replaces pitcher Andres Santiago, batting 9th, playing third base. Nick Shaw lines out softly to left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez. Jason Rogers walks. Rene Tosoni strikes out swinging. Brock Kjeldgaard walks. Jason Rogers to 2nd. Mike Walker doubles (13) on a fly ball to left fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez. Jason Rogers scores. Brock Kjeldgaard scores. Anderson De La Rosa strikes out swinging. Huntsville (21-27 second half, 50-66 overall) and Chattanooga will go at it again tomorrow afternoon. Righty Ariel Pena (5-8, 4.33) will be on the mound for the Stars. He is looking to bounce back from some rough outings as of late. Game time is set for 1:15 Central. Make sure you tune in starting at 1:00 to hear Stars Radio Broadcaster Alex Cohen and the pregame show.
  25. Final: Chattanooga 5 Huntsville 1 (Completion of Suspended Game 8/9) The Chattanooga Lookouts used a 3 run first to power their way to a 5-1 victory Saturday evening. Stars start Andy Moye worked the 1st prior to the rains coming and forcing the suspension. Due to the suspension, Moye (5-12, 4.43) worked only 1 inning, allowing 3 run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. He was saddled with the loss. In that 1 inning, Moye threw 28 pitches, 19 for strikes. With the short outing, and the work the bullpen has done recently, he's probably going to see an inning out of the bullpen to get some work and also take a little off the bullpen. When the game restarted, Frankie De La Cruz took the mound for the Stars. He did a good job, working 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. De La Cruz threw 63 pitches, 35 for strikes. By working 4 innings, De La Cruz took a lot of pressure off the bullpen. Arcenio Leon was next up for the Stars. He worked 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. Finally, Micah Owings, who started in left field, came on to work the 9th. He did not allow a hit or a run. He walked 1 and struck out 2. So far, the pitching side of the hybrid has been better than the hitting side for Micah. Huntsville Box Score The Stars offense was held to 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks while being struck out 12 times. First baseman Jason Rogers carried the big bat again for the Stars. He went 2-3 and drove in the only Stars run, his league leading 77th RBI. He also drew a walk and stole 2 bases. Second baseman Nick Shaw was 1-4 with a double and scored the Stars lone run. Shea Vucinich doubled and Eric Patterson and Rene Tosoni each singled for the Stars. The other base on balls was taken by pitcher Frankie De La Cruz. Huntsville Play By Play Game 2 is being played right now. Jump on and listen to Alex Cohen on the Stars Radio Network.
