  1. This is an ironic post in a thread in which a visitor comments, the way I took it, on the over-moderation of this board. Maybe I misinterpreted his comment and in doing so leaked my own feelings. Oh, well. Either way. And Russ, lest we forget, fan is short for fanatic. These days, the inmates run the asylum. As I'm sure you know, it's far more toned down here than it is other places on the internets.
  2. Amen. Sorry. I wasn't referencing any specific post; just wanted to fit in.
  3. Or even better, that no other team gets C.C., either. Keep him in the AL.
  4. I'm guessing they were referring to the fact the Brewers continue to celebrate a team ('82) that did not win a world championship.
  5. I was at that game. I was in the bathroom during the sausage race. I shall never forgive myself.
  6. Whether or not my resume impresses you, bullox, I know enough to speak intelligently on this. Like DougJones, it's up to you whether you want to take me at my word.
  7. How is it preposterous? Because it makes you wrong? Sorry if you don't like that. And it's not a new stance. It's what I've been trying to get across from the start. But if you want to go on believing TH cares even one bit about those things, go ahead. I'll no longer try to stop you. I've said what I'm going to say. If you don't want to believe me, fine. Obviously that ain't changing. As for the chats, again, believe what you want. I don't know why I would claim I knew for certain how JSonline conducts its chats. Nor do I remember any wriggling or backing off. I seem to remember just bowing out altogether, at the point where I wasn't around long enough to find out whether they can skip questions or not. I don't think I even knew for sure still until you just posted it. Either way, I don't have the energy to argue about a year-old thread about an online q-and-a.
  8. bullox and Jones: Your posts come across as condescending. I was told that wasn't accepted around here. Maybe I misunderstood. Or maybe you have to have 2,000 posts. I guess I didn't read the fine print. First, l'll tell you that you'd be surprised how similar it is covering sports from HS on through the pros. At the end of the day, it's the same job. Only the venues and credential applications change. But if only covering higher-profile sports makes me credible in your eyes, I've also covered Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball over the past six years, and have also covered Packers and Bucks games. Jones: How do I know that? Because I know how reporters think. I know what our job is. So yes, I know that TH doesn't give one ounce of doody whether Yost likes him or whether fans like Yost. I guarantee it. Whether or not you believe me, I suppose, is your choice. As for the chats, as I recall it, I said only that we don't know whether they can skip questions or not. How the heck would I know how JSonline does their chats? My stance was we don't know one way or the other, so why not save the ranting until the facts come forth. If they have since then, rant away. Postseason: No. What you're asking for is opinion. That's a columnists job. That's Michael Hunt. A reporter's job is only to report the facts and let others form their opinions.
  9. No, it is not. No, it would not.(And as I already said, it would take something light years beyond anything that has happened between the Brewers and TH before an organization would attempt to ostracize a media entity. It just doesn't happen.) With my 10 years' experience in the business, I'm comfortable with that if you are. That is not fact, but purely your opinion, which has clearly fostered your thoughts on all this. No, he reports what Ned says to him.We have absolutely no idea what TH thinks of Yost. You may say you do, but you don't. For all any of us knows, it's just as likely TH thinks Yost is the greatest manager in the history of baseball as the polar opposite. It's not TH's job to have an opinion - that's Michael Hunt's. TH's job is to objectively report, occasionally analyze and then let the public decide. It's not his duty to develop any opinion or bias, and I don't see it in his writing. But people can read into comments and/or writing whatever they want. I have absolutely no doubt that is the case here. And TH doesn't get upset at criticism of Yost, he gets upset at what he feels are stupid questions. You may form your own opinion on whether the fans' questions have indeed been fair; just know that TH doesn't get grumpy because 'his boy' is being attacked. It's because, in his opinion, the question was unworthy.
  10. Mickey: Ask me or my wife if being a sportswriter is stressful. And all I do is cover preps and small colleges in Dubuque, IA, and southwest Wisconsin. I promise you, TH's job is plenty stressful. As stressful as a paramedic or fireman? Of course not. But as TooLive pointed out so well, that would be a pretty short list, wouldn't it? If that's the standard, there are only about 5 stressful jobs in the world.
  11. Mr. Jones, for your consideration: While I deeply respect your opinion, I feel compelled to say that I feel your thoughts in post #11, which I will not bother to quote here for space considerations, are a tad unfair, a smidge unfounded and ever-so-slightly libelous. I suppose there's a chance that I could be wrong, but it is my humble opinion that the Brewers do not withhold any information from Mr. Haudricourt or any member of the media, no matter what has transpired between the two working parties. Nor do I believe - and again, I am but a humble poster here and could be wrong - that Mr. Haudricourt is afraid to write anything, positive or negative, about Ned Yost or any member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. And while I'm sure you have legitimate cause to write such a thing, I humbly suggest that it is just a hint of silly that Mr. Haudricourt is 'intimidated' by Mr. Yost. And I believe Mr. Haudricourt does not get his 'insider information' from Mr. Yost, anyway, nor does any member of the media. Those breaking-news type of stories, it is my soft-spoken opinion, come from sources outside the media room and/or dugout. In summation, it is my belief that Mr. Haudricourt believes his job is to report unbiased and objectively on the team he covers, and - and I'm just guessing here - I think Mr. Haudricourt doesn't care about the fortunes of the Milwaukee Brewers to develop any kind of bias. It's more my belief that Mr. Haudricourt's job is to report, not give opinions laced with any kind of bias one way or another. But perhaps it is I who am wrong after all. Who knows for sure? Respectfully, wisportswriter
  12. I have no affinity for TH whatsoever, though I'm sure he's a handsome fella. I have merely defended his work in the past when it has been unjustly criticized, emphasis on unjustly. If you don't like a guy's work, that's one thing. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have only popped in to quell the occasional unfair attacks. Nor is this about blindly defending writers. If you cared enough - and I don't know why you would, but maybe - you could follow my posts and figure out which ones in the state I feel do a good job and which ones I don't think are up to par with their contemporaries. And I didn't say "A-ha!" I'd never say "A-ha!" I'd say "Gotcha!"
  13. First of all, the premise of that argument I've seen too many times here is all wrong. It's not TH's job to be hard on anyone; it's his job to accurately and fairly report on the team he covers. Praise when deserved, criticize likewise. But for those who see TH as a company stooge, here's the early portion of Friday night's gamer:
  14. My head hurts. As for the timing, we have no idea why it's running now. Maybe Oates was on vacation. Maybe the WSJ didn't have room on its front page until now. Maybe it's going to run in Sunday's paper, a newspaper's most-read edition of the week. Point is, we don't know, so I don't see the point of railing against it. jeffy: Oates said he believes it was a mistake by TH to publish the blog item before getting his own confirmation. You're repeating that point. uwwis: What?
  15. Tom Oates of the Wisconsin State Journal weighs in on this whole subject and absolutely nails it. Oates: It's a new, and dangerous, world in sports reporting
  16. If you've got someone designated whose job is to blog, sure. But for a reporter, every second writing in a blog is taking away from work you would otherwise would have been doing. I guess it's whether you deem that work was important enough. Obviously editors made their decision. Most reporters disagree with it. And be careful with your tone. "God forbid journalists work to improve their product." I read that as an implication journalists don't care about their product and/or are lazy, neither of which would be even remotely true.
  17. Just so you know, Crew, by and large, it's make their journalists blog. Most writers/reporters hate it. The commands have come from on high.
  18. Those rare isolated incidents - unfortunately at huge entities like the Globe and NY Times - have stained the industry and shed a bad light on the other 99% of journalists in this country who are both excellent and ethical. Don't think those incidents don't ... well, I can't finish that sentence without getting hit by the potty mouth police here. Suffice to say, I'm not happy about them. As for Herbstreit, that people continue to count ESPN as a member of the journalism community continues to frustrate the daylights out of me as well. Outside of a select few who are actually reporters, the personalities on ESPN are there for entertainment purposes only. They're not journalists, and they'll tell you so themselves.
  19. I don't know why I tried. You guys have your minds made up about TH and, to a certain extent, journalism in general. And it's apparent that's not going to change no matter what I say or how wrong you are. I will say it sucks, though, and isn't easy for me to read. Carry on.
  20. TH posted the blog rumor on the MJS blog for a pretty simple (at least I thought) reason: Any idiot at this point knows it's quite possible Ned Yost could be fired. So any publishing of a rumor that it will happen based on a source close to the team - even if by an unaccountable blog - needs to be addressed. So TH checked on the report with his own source to either confirm or refute. It really is simple as that. And if you think a blogger's anonymous source is even in the same universe of reliability as a newspaper writer's, I fear for the way you gather information. A blogger can hear one thing from whomever he deems a 'source close to the team' and fire off his report without thinking twice. Heck, he can make the source up altogether if he wants. At any newspaper I've ever heard of, a writer's anonymous source - even when credited just in an online report - must be confirmed and double-checked just like every other fact that goes into print.
  21. wisconsinfan the only one to nail it so far. No. Not good enough pitching, in the rotation or the bullpen, to hold up for 162 games. That's not a playoff recipe. And there's too much ground to make up with an in-season acquisition or two. That said, I like the team. Hopefully the Crew stays in it for the long haul again, and with the right additions/luck can be a very serious division, even league contender.
  22. The more concerning quotes (to me, at least), from Anthony Witrado's MJS gamer:
