  1. The offensive lineup you put together is worse on paper than this year's lineup. Other than being enticed by some pitchers we may get through Fielder I'm not all that optimistic about the team you constructed.
  2. I think Melvin has too much pride to be Mark Attanasio's puppet. Then again as long as he's receiving a check each week.......... Somebody has to be accountable for the inability of putting solid pitching together for the past five years. Ultimately Melvin is accountable(mark a. isn't going to get axed). Melvin's track record has never been good in assembling good pitching, so it's not like under Attanasio this is suddenly a problem.
  3. Bando and perhaps Taylor may have been lost causes but we also have to remember that Melvin is the only GM to have the benefit of an owner who is willing to competitively spend money. A huge disadvantage for Taylor, Bando, etc. So we aren't exactly comparing apples to apples. Taylor got us a better farm system in hiring Jack Z....Bando just sucked regardless of the owner's pocketbook.
  4. I think we have to remember to separate what Melvin was given through the draft from what he has actually accomplished through his own dealings. He hasn't done a great job supplementing the talent he was given by Jack Zdurencik (Braun, Fielder, Gallardo, etc.)
  5. We gave Rickie Weeks three years to get his swing straight. If we believe Gamel is our third baseman of the future then there's no time like the present for him to go through his initiation lumps in the majors.
  6. Because the optician didn't install a Predator-like sensory system for outside fastballs like they did for Josh Prince.
  7. makes you appreciate Mel Kiper Jr.
  8. I should have mentioned that. Just offering up what people thought of Davis when he was healthy and putting up good numbers.
  9. Not worth much since I don't study the players prior to the draft calls. But I've got a good feeling so far.... big arm college pitchers and a very talented cf coming off a injury-riddled down year.
  10. Sounds like he should have been a top 10 pick by that overview. Why did he drop out the first round?
  11. after a down year maybe they feel Davis will be anxious to sign now. They must still believe in his ability.
  12. some were calling his Kirby Puckett -esque after his freshman year.
  13. story on Davis: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3286474
  14. eric arnett: http://www.bigtennetwork.com/videos/indiana-hoosiers.asp?bcpid=1704097618&bclid=1612710067&bctid=23867957001
  15. One knock I've had on Melvin is his inability to gauge when guys are "one year wonders". He signed Brady Clark, T-blow and Bill Hall to lucrative contracts after one year of over achievement. Now I'm no prophet but even I called for Bill Hall to be traded after his stand out season as it was an outlier at age 26.
  16. I don't think players will necessarily perform better, I do believe occasionally guys can get emotionally fired up and focus with more intensity for a short period. But that's not really what I'm worried about. I like Macha's cool demeanor but there's got to be a switch too for a manager where he goes all out for the players with a passion. You have to remember Macha's "constituency" is alpha male ball players who may not like it if their manager is showing little emotion when in a heated argument/battle. Some guys are probably immature enough to think it's a sign of weakness.
  17. As far as feeling like he won't stick his neck out there for you. There's a time to be restrained and a time to go off, imo. It seems like Gardenhire worked over the ump AND Macha tonight. I'd definitely take that call reversal as a sign the ump has no respect for my team and take it personal. Worst of all I just hope guys on the team don't lose faith in Macha's perceived or actual ability to stick up for them. Could create the disconnect that Billy Beane claimed Macha had with A's players.
  18. I like that Macha's been through the rebuilding phase before because it sounds like Melvin is going to make some big changes this off season.
  19. I'm sure Doug and Gord have been contemplating what they're going to do if Jack Z leaves since at least last year. In house or out of house??
  20. They don't have to like him but they need to respect him. Sounds like there wasn't a lot of respect for Macha in Oakland.
  21. Anybody have an opinion on Jim Tracy from his time with the Dodgers and the Pirates(they lost, but how much of it was on him?)?
  22. If Mark A. gives us a 3:2 payroll advantage yes he can call all the shots as far as I'm concerned. Since that will never be the case it's pointless comparing the two. When you look at Melvin and Attanasio's baseball resumes who would you rather have calling the shots? It's just common sense.
  23. I pretty much agree with logan (except for the sell the team part). I'm not mad at Attanasio or anything I just think as others have said he's walking a fine line. Attanasio seems like a wanna be baseball jock who's living out his fantasy by getting involved in big league baseball decisions. He should learn a few things over the next couple years from Melvin and then start calling more shots if he's still inclined. He's definitely no idiot.
  24. How dare you, sir! Pie is Cake's round dirty step child. Cake can transform into all shapes, it's culinary power is far greater.
  25. Bush is more like the coffee that goes with the cake. Some people prefer a glass of water, some a cup of coffee but neither is essential to the gooey goodness of the cake.
