  1. Great, I'm very interested in seeing Fernandez pitch tonight. Weeks is back, right?
  2. Question for the stat guys: Is there a stat that is calculated like this: OBP * 1.8 + SLG = ??? (OBP times that magically number that makes its value equal to SLG) + SLG What would that be called? Wouldn't it be more accurate than OPS?
  3. From Linked Article Above: Some analysts have noted, as discussed by Michael Lewis in Moneyball, that each point of On-Base Percentage is more valuable than each point of Slugging Percentage. How much more has been the topic of some discussion over the years, but a multiplier of 1.8 has been suggested. This turns out to be the value that results in the maximum correlation coefficient. OBP is about 1.8 times more important. OBP of .350 helps score runs as much as a .630 Slugging %. Brady Clark's .372 OBP helped the team score the same as a player with a .670 SLG, which would be an amazing SLG. Compare it to Jenkins' .512 and Lee's .487. Albert Pujols' career SLG stands at .621. Of course, it is also very relative to where the player bats in the lineup. A .550 SLG doesn't help score as many runs when you're batting leadoff, because there are less baserunners, ect.
  4. Iron Chef - Sorry if this was answered already, but would you count as one of the four teams that advance from season one? Or would it be the top 4 besides you, setting the championship league at 17 people (4, 4, 4, 4, and you)? EDIT: Yeah, I meant 17.
  5. Thanks guys... Chief was right, I was trying to join the PLUS Leagues. You would think I would know by now, its my third, but final, Yahoo! League.
  6. It sounds excellent, but I am having trouble joing one of the leagues. I keep getting this: There was a problem: ? This league is not registered in this game. (Error #272) ? This league is from the free game. (Error #271) I've checked and double checked so I know I typed the league ID and password correctly...any suggestions?
  7. If at all possible, can we hold of the draft until the evening of Sunday the 19th or later? I will be in London from the 8th to the 19th and would really like to be present. Maybe if there are say 3 first half leagues they all could have different draft dates and times, and then you can sign up annonymously for the draft date you can make.
  8. Yes, yes...I meant why have runs when OBP should cover the aspect. Sorry for the confusion. OBP is probably my favorite stat when looking at players. But I was looking at milwaukeebrewers.com and they had a picture of Weeks and the caption had his average, home runs, and runs scored. I thought, "Runs scored? Who cares?" and came running here. And RBI's are pretty much a function of your average with RISP (clutch hitting) and number of opportunities... Thanks though. One more question, how do you view "clutch hitting"? I would say that it is the difference between your average without RISP and with RISP. Would you agree? Or would you call it simply their average with RISP? Chad Moeller can be a clutch player for his ability by hitting .270 with RISP, but for Jenkins that would be considered the opposite of clutch. I suppose its all relative.
  9. Do they have anything at all to do with the individual player? Besides maybe speed, it seems like runs pretty much depends on your OBP and how well the guys behind you hit. So if the only thing it depends on is OBP, why have it? Maybe if you hit more doubles you'll score more runs, but then that is kind of your slugging percentage, and the major factor in scoring runs are they abilities of the players behind you. A guy could have a .400 OBP and hit 50 doubles, but depending on the playing batting behind him, he could score anywhere from 0 to 250 runs. Is this a pretty useless stat (and if so, why do publications use it as a prominent stat), or am I overlooking something?
  10. Looking at the rankings, I would love to draft the catcher Max Sapp. Crazy home run power. I have a question about him though. One report says this: While he has a very strong arm and calls a good game, his body is a little on the soft side, and there is some concern if he'll stay behind the plate. If he is moved, his likely destination would be first base. What do they mean by having a soft body? Injury prone? And if he has a strong arm, wouldn't 1st base negate that skill?

  12. I think so far I like Shane Robinson...
  13. Great stuff. I don't come to the draft board often, but i'll be back to check on this thread.
  14. I like this Jared Fernandez signing. His stats seem pretty good. It would be very cool to see him start a couple games next year in the bigs, if a starter or two go on the DL.
  15. Maybe we just sit on him until nearer to the deadline next year. By then we can see how he preforms, how Cruz/Hart preform, and what kind of players we could get in a trade. It would take a whole lot to get us to trade him this offseason.
  16. Do we give him an extension for beyond this year? If not, do we trade him this offseason, or trade him before the deadline next year? I think it depends on how much money he would want when negotiating a contract extension. If he will take 6-7 million per year I say sign him. If it's 9 or more then he should be dealt, preferably this offseason, unless a decent offer doesn't come around. If it's about 8 mil that he wants, we could go either way. If he is resigned, I think that Jenkins is now on the trade block, to be dealt anytime before the start of the 2007 season, to make room for Hart or Cruz and reduce an ever-growing payroll.
  17. he tried to steal home? what happened? (im reading, cant watch)
