  1. For those that are unhappy with the Rogers pick because he was a HS pitcher, which college guy would you have taken instead? Sowers http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  2. His rights can be controlled...as in DFE? I didn't think you could do that with players from 4-year colleges. We did it this past year with Jared Theodorakos, who was granted an extra medical reshirt year of eligibility. Since Timm is considered a 4th year junior, next year he'll be considered a 5th year senior.
  3. Greg, I too have concerns about taking 2 prep pitchers with our first two picks. But your initial comments about the Brewers basically throwing away their picks as if they had nothing to lose was on the opposite side of the spectrum of pencilling in Rogers & Gallardo as our #1 & #2 starters in 2008. I tried to shy away from pumping up Sowers too much as the spring wore on, as he still remained my hopeful favorite for our #5 pick, and really is the exact opposite of Mark Rogers. Heck, I even suggested that the Brewers should reach for a player with their first-rounder given the notion that the draft wasn't exactly stacked with quality players. The player I had in mind all along was Blake DeWitt, and I think the Dodgers got a steal by nabbing him late in the first round. Such is the drama of the draft. I suppose I have cooled since getting upset with picks like Mike Jones & Prince Fielder (I may have been right about Jones, another prep pitcher, and I obviously was wrong about Fielder, although I always recognized his potential at the plate). And while I like Josh Baker, I'm bummed that the Indians picked up Chuck Lofgren in the 4th round right after our pick. I'm not sure why he fell so far, maybe there are signability issues, but I truly believe that Lofgren could be a special hitter as a pro.
  4. Interesting. Thanks for the scoop badgerdan. Maybe we will see a ripple effect of catching promotions as some have guessed. At least I hope so, I'd hate to see another one of our top prospects down & out due to injury.
  5. I've noted before that Rogers could easily log 50 innings or so at Helena, or Arizona, this summer after he signs. That doesn't mean that the Brewers will let him throw more than 60-70 pitches in an outing, but he should have 2 solid months pitching for one of our rookie level teams. I'm assuming it will be Helena, as I wouldn't be too fond of sending that high of a pick to our lowest level. If he's good enough to be drafted as high as he was, he should be at Helena. Someone else noted it on another thread, but our pitching staff at Helena should have some exciting names to follow. Gallardo is another guy that could be placed there, and he too could be a relatively quick sign (Texas Chrisitian isn't expected to pose that much of a signing threat). Also, just a reminder, but Jim Powell more than likely will have Rogers on for his pre-game interview since there was no game today. Be sure to tune in, although as always the interview will likely be archived on their website.
  6. I would rank it a B, but I would cross out the "could have done better in the lower rounds" comment because as I just pointed out in another thread, we really don't know who these prospects are. And it's not like we passed on far superior talent to take the players we did. And you never draft for need, as much as I wanted to see a 3B taken within the first 5 rounds (something I've hope for the past 2-3 years). I wondered before the draft if the Brewers would take some pitchers that coincided with their overall sinkerball philosophy, and it appears as though they did with Wahpepah, Langille and a few of the others that reportedly work well down in the zone. Also, no surprise on the focus on Canadians, another area I expected them to focus. As Bill or someone else noted on another thread, we won't see these players pitch until next season due to Visa issues, so it will be interesting to see how those players are handled this summer. They could all be pitching for the Canadian Olympic team for all I know, or even their junior national squad.
  7. I can't find the "general ********" thread, so I'll just take this first opportunity after my return from six unwired days to say that I think this draft is a disaster. The HS arms will break down, or they won't develop. Taking HS pitchers with high draft picks is like gambling without any information, when you have the alternative of gambling with lots of information. To me, this draft says "the team is for sale, we really don't think we're going to contend in three years, so let's just forget about trying to get better." I love Jack Z, and I'll be rooting for these guys, but my optimism about the Brewers' future has just been cut in half. I know you mentioned that you're in a bad mood greg, but your stance is rather extreme. While HS pitchers are risky, it's a big leap to just say that they won't ever develop and that the Brewers are basically rolling over because the team is for sale. Last few rounds have been kind of iffy after a really solid start to the draft and close with the 10th rounder. That happens every year because we just don't know much about these guys. Plus, most MLB talent is taken in the top 10 rounds. A few of these guys will be DFE candidates, while a few others likely are organizational soldier types. Nice to see a couple of powerful bats added in Richardson & Ayala, who might be the perfect players for High Desert, although I doubt the Brewers will be affiliated with HD long enough for us to find out.
  8. Whats with all the "sloping shoulders" talk?? Now I have to go home and look in the mirror to see how mine rate. I hope we didnt pass on Bailey due to the wrong slant of his shoulder. Sloped shoulders are usually noted in hitters more than pitchers. Some of the best hitters in baseball have sloped shoulders as opposed to broad or square shoulders. Sloped shoulders are when your shoulders are set down lower than your neck, almost forming an upside down V. Eric Chavez is a perfect example of a hitter with this physical trait. How does it help hitters? I have no clue, but many believe it does.
  9. Elbert & DeWitt are relatively refined high school players. Many, including myself, projected Elbert to go 10th overall to the Rangers, another team that stereotypically values performance over projection. I agree with nikip, the Dodgers have had a great draft. They almost always do.
  10. I would guess around $30,000-40,000. I think I projected 10th rounders to be around the $50,000 range.
  11. Thanks to everyone for posting the names, links, info, etc. I'm going to start posting profiles on all of our picks, with a few of them already done.
  12. Another Canuck, surprise surprise. David, do you still think Melvin has nothing to do with the draft http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ?
  13. I thought Sollmann would have been an A's or Blue Jays pick. Loretta is a good comparison, atlhough Sollmann doesn't have that kind of versatility.
  14. 20. A year or two ago they went 22.
  15. Bill, I'm guessing the Brewers took Chapman in the top 10 rounds because they believe they can sign him. They may have to give him a little more than slot value, similar to Wilhelmsen 2 years ago, but I would guess that he'll get signed sooner or later. Lots of HS picks, and a short lefty. Jack Z. wins.
  16. I'm bummed that they didn't take Cordier, or Jaramillo, but Gallardo is still a great pick at that spot. In one of my mock drafts I had him going 10th overall to the Rangers. Who knows, maybe Cordier will slide to our 3rd round pick, although he shouldn't based on his talent. How 'bout 3 prep righties with our first 3 picks? David will like that http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  17. Is Cordier still on the board? I really like the pick of Gallardo. Great fastball-curve combo. Nice job so far Jack!
  18. We can post all picks in this thread if people wouldn't mind replying instead of having 50 different thread of the 50 different picks. Also, just so people know, I can't access the chat room, or at least I can't add any thoughts. The only one that got through was the /. I almost crapped my pants when I saw Dustin Pedroia #2 to the Tigers http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  19. Hey Bill, do you have any troubles getting the MLB feed? Being a fellow Mac guy I've had problems getting Huntsville's feed, going back to last year, and MLB.com's. Not the games so much, but some of the talk programs. I also can't access the scouting videos at home for whatever reason. Sorry to go a little off-topic, but since it was brought up...
  20. And with any kind of defense behind him you can remove two of those runs... maybe three. I know you can't say "what if", but he didn't pitch as poorly as that line. Good call Chris. I hate making excuses for players, but Hendrickson also didn't have some calls at the plate go his way. This series has been littered by a questionable strike zone, which led to Milton Bradley's outburst last night, and that trend seems to have continued tonight. Basically, with better defense and some better calls, Hendrickson wouldn't have been at 83 pitches after 5 innings. Even with that, nice outing. It definitely adds to the excitement this year. As for Gagne, streaks and records are meant to fall...
  21. With expressed concerns about Rickie Weeks out there, I'm surprised more people haven't talked about Prince Fielder's mighty slump, as his average is down to .247 now. Last year he slumped at the same time after starting the year hot, and got hot again in mid-June, and didn't let up the entire year. Still, since we like to overreact, what's up with Prince? I think it's absolutely great to see Brad Nelson hitting .300 at AA. And Kat, I need no apologies http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  22. I'm not as big of a fan as you #6 hitter bunting as I am your #2 hitter, but even if that ball wasn't thrown away we would have had runners at 2nd & 3rd with 1 out. Again, when you're playing for 1 run, there's nothing wrong with that. If allowed to hit, Ginter could has just as easily hit into a double play, leaving a man at 3rd with 2 out.
  23. Yup. THEY had to screw up for us to win. Thank you Dodgers, we couldn't do it ourselves. A win is a win. Congrats Brew Crew.
  24. Colby - you answered your own question. What makes us think that we could get Scott home from 3rd with one out when we couldnt get Jenks home from third with no outs one inning earlier. Yup, I know I did, but I still bunt in that situation. If we were on the road, I might have a bigger beef against it when you should really go for as many runs as you can. At home, you play for 1.
  25. My problem with the call is that Podsednik can steal third easily. so why give up the out? Personally, I'd rather bunt him over than take the risk of having him thrown out on a stolen base attempt. Of course, the bunt sucked, and he was thrown out anyway. Poor execution, but not a bad call IMO. C'mon, 3rd time's a charm...
