  1. In the original post I meant Haren, not Harden, that was a fat finger that I didn't catch and just happened to be another player's name. Neither did Hardy, and that's only true from a Power standpoint. Weeks had a very mediocre AA campaign which people seem to conveniently forget. Escobar will be every bit as valuable as the players you mentioned if he develops any kind of power, he's still a twig at 180 LBs, his frame could easily support another 25 - 30 LBs without sacrifiing any speed or quickness. The way he's currently configured he'll hit double digit HRs in the majors, and he has room for growth. He has 2 significant holes in his game... he doesn't walk enough and he doesn't hit enough HRs, but he does everything else well.
  2. He's saying that even if Escobar was just an average defender he'd still be an exciting prospect with his offensive numbers as he's always been young for his league.
  3. Wow what drama in Helena. The lead off batter in the bottom of the 9th skies a ball to shallow CF, I mean absolutely skies one and Dykstra drops it, lead off runner on 2nd. Billings sacrifices the runner from 2nd to 3rd. 0-2 count the pitch goes off Zarraga's glove, Fiers rushes home and blocks the plate, Zarraga gets him the ball and he tags out the runner to maintain the 1 run lead. Then Fiers K's the batter on the next pitch to end the game. I like this Fiers, 8 Ks in 5 IP now.
  4. Prince CS again on the first pitch, a pitch out, he's going to have to get better about picking his spots as he moves up and continues his career.
  5. There's always a couple of commercials that I have extreme feelings for either way in a given season between the affiliates. For example during the Huntsville broadcasts last year they had a Bellesarios (I'm sure I butchered the spelling) commercial, I grew to despise the commercial in about 4 days. This year the "Rent a Wreck" commercial on the Helena broadcasts makes me chuckle for whatever reason, maybe it's the "... and no they aren't wrecks, they are nice used cars" line.
  6. I think that most pitchers are going to stretch out at 20-25 innings per year because it's proven as the safest way to develop pitchers thus far.
  7. Parra pitching just okay peripheral wise with 2BB and 4K but hasn't given up any ER, but he's also only given up 2 hits.
  8. Brownstein makes an excellent diving catch in the second game in his life he's ever played in CF, it's hard not to instantly like this young man.
  9. I don't disagree about getting help for next season, but the problem I see is that the teams with good pitching in AA or AAA are in the division or not in a position to compete this season. Both Baltimore and Toronto have prospects I like, but would either dump pitching for JJ if they aren't realistically competing for the WC or the Division? Texas isn't going to trade for Hardy, or at least they shouldn't, but I can hope... Buchholz is probably the best pitcher in AAA who plays for a team that could use a SS, and Boston could actually afford to sign Hardy long-term if they choose, but I'm not sure how realistic that deal is. Other prospects I like are in the Reds and Dodger organizations, I'm not into trading Hardy to our WC competition as long as we're still in the race. I'm looking at teams with pitching that would like a SS or a package built around a C prospect. Normally you wouldn't think a SS or a stud C prospect would be tough to move, but again as I look at pitchers I might want to acquire, I don't see realistic deals out there at this time. Maybe I just have a different perspective this season, but last year it seemed like I could come up with deals everywhere, this season I'm coming up empty.
  10. I apologize, I thought I was recording but apparently I wasn't, at least I caught it about 10 seconds or so into the interview.? Steve interviews John Pokorny today and discussed how he likes to pitch, a possible starting role, if he'd rather be a starter or reliever, transitioning to pro ball, and "throwing like a girl".? A fairly entertaining interview.
  11. Huntsville losing 3-1 in the 6th. No multi hit games thus far. Green with 2ER. no BBs and 4 Ks thus far. Nashville winning 1-0 in the 3rd. Escobar with a single and batting lead off tonight. BC up 3-1 in the 4th and currently in a rain delay. Errecart with a 3r HR, Haydel and Schafer had singled in front of him.
  12. Steve freaking Moss just hit a 3R HR to put Clinton up 9-0 in the 2nd.
  13. Lo Cain ground out to second his first time up. Nieves is struggling mightily. Carrol just hit a triple and scored on an error on the relay throw to home. WI now down 5-0.
  14. Chris Mehring also is graciously allowing us to archive the pregame interviews.? Today Chris had manager Jeff Isom on the show and discussed winning close games, the key to Merklinger's success on the mound, Peralta having success without his best stuff, Lo Cain's rehab assignment, and BK at the plate.? Good stuff.
  15. WI starts the game in a shakey manner, Nieves and BK get in each other's way on a roller towards 1B... it should have been an out, but ended up scored as a hit. edit. And of course then Carrol steals 2nd base, then Nieves walks the next batter. Clinton has stolen 22 bases on WI this season and 12 in this series alone... yikes.
  16. Rottino is catching today in Huntsville.
  17. Brett Pollock just notified his listeners that Josh Butler was placed on the DL and Welch was "recalled" from Helena.
  18. Brett Pollock interviews last night's hero Michael Garciaparra.? They discuss his injury, the difference between AA and AAA pitching, and the commitment to play college football and baseball that he walked away from to play baseball.
  19. We've been through this already, it's not his draft, regardless of the input in the upper rounds... every single player? Hardly. I'm not taking anything away from Melvin, he works very hard, gets out to see all the minor league teams, goes on scouting trips, and certainly has an informed opinion, but his focus is on MLB as it should be. What he does deserve credit for is hiring excellent people to evaluate talent for the team and they have maintained a consistent philosophy, which has led to a very successful farm system and good product at the MLB level.
  20. small quibble, but Melvin doesn't actually draft anyone, the scouting directors run the show.
  21. Because he's a glorified rental now, and rentals tend to get traded for prospects, deals for MLB pitching with longevity happen in the off-season... Haren, Volquez, Garza, Jackson off the top of my head (side note, I liked Jackson as I like most of the Rays pitchers, but I really missed the trend in his career)... I felt through last season and this off-season that there were plenty of arms that were potential candidates, but my goodness did that well run dry in a hurry. If we could get the next Kazmir I'd be all for making a deal like that today, but looking around the minors there just aren't any deals popping out at me this year like years past. I'm sure there's someone that I'm overlooking outside of the players I've coveted for a long time like Neftali Feliz, but the organizations that have stud pitching in AAA and AA don't really need the services of a SS today. To get value we had to give value. 3 years of Fielder or 2 years of Hardy was significant value... 1 season and 2 months of Hardy (giving him time to hit a hot streak again) screams prospects to me. I don't see Fielder going anywhere in season.
  22. The red ring of death warranty extends to 3 years, go through Xbox live, it shouldn't cost you anything.
  23. The time to trade JJ for pitching was last off-season, but that bandwagon had plenty of room at the time. I'd be shocked if they could get big league pitching for JJ now, we'd be looking at prospects which probably won't help us this year anyway.
  24. Axford didn't pitch well either tonight and Littleton did manage to go a couple scoreless, he just doesn't inspire confidence. I picked up the Nashville feed after the T-Rat game, unfortunately.
  25. Nashville tied in the bottom of the 9th with Littleton pitching, I have the same feeling I had tonight watching Smith pitch to Lee. Edit. I knew it... lame.
