  1. Little blurb about it in the AZ paper... Davis diagnosed with thyroid cancer Nick Piecoro The Arizona Republic Mar. 28, 2008 02:17 PM Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, team President Derrick Hall confirmed Friday afternoon. Hall said Davis is planning to make his scheduled start at Chase Field tonight but will address the media at some point today, either before or after. Davis is expected to make his next few starts, Hall said, before undergoing surgery sometime within the next three weeks. "We're not sure about the timetable after that," Hall said. "We're deeply saddened and concerned for Doug but we're still in the process of collecting facts and applying that to timing." There are 18,000 cases of thyroid cancer annually in the U.S., according to webmd.com, and most patients are cured or live many years with the disease. The thyroid is located in the front of the neck.

  3. put my bid in on them....would love to go to Opening Day in Milwaukee.
  4. they just need to play all their games against the Cubs. There were 8000 in attendance at the game today.
  5. Hey all. I'm at the game currently and its a good turnout so far. Will hopefully have pics later. From my Crackberry
  6. im on shift tomorrow or else I would be at the opener, but I will be down at Phx Muni on Friday for the A's game. Also going to the game on Sunday vs the Astros.
  7. I second BCBF's recommendation, if you want to find food in an area you are less likely to get mugged or shot, either find something along the I-10 (mile or 2 south of the Park) or head north of Peoria Ave. Actually, if you head up to 59th Ave and Peoria Ave, there is a Applebee's, Boston Market and a couple other places, there isnt alot on 51st Ave (the street maryvale park is on). As someone who has lived here for 6 years, I would recommend not venturing out in the Maryvale area other than the ballpark during the day. Locals call that area Scaryvale for a reason.
  8. The prices are pretty much on par with the Keg. As far as places to eat in that area, you will mostly find alot of little Mexican food places and chain fast food restaurants. Sorry I cant offer better info, I try to do my best to avoid that area as much as possible.
  9. I just got the Dear John email as well. If anyone isnt going to use their passcode, let me know. I am planning on heading up from Phoenix for the series.
  10. Metrocenter Mall is ok to goto during the day, its not somewhere I would recommend during the night. If you are looking for a decent mall, you can go over to Arrowhead Mall which is in the nice area of Peoria and Glendale. Its just down the road from the Peoria Sports Complex. The Westgate area in Glendale is nice, one of the bars I like to goto down there is called Hell's Half Acre, its a pretty busy bar with decent drink prices. Heres a link to the Westgate area... http://www.westgateaz.com/
  11. Having lived in the Phoenix area for just over 6 years now, I must say the Scottsdale nightlife sucks. Its good if you are into rich yuppies, plastic women and BMW's everywhere. Come out to the west side, its a little more laidback and people arent as stuck up as they are in Snobbsdale. I prefer Top Shelf over Valle Luna, and there are plenty of hole in the wall bars that are 10x better than the Acme Roadhouse. I suppose for tourists Tempe and Scottsdale are great, but being a resident here I avoid those 2 communities unless I have absolutely have to go there.
  12. I will second pitchleague's observation about Bank One Ballpark(Chase Field). Every time I have been there it seems like the fans are not into the game and they have to be prompted to get involved in the game. This last season they had this big marketing thing that was called "D-Volution" which I am sure they were trying to model after the Red Sox Nation or something similar. I was there for the Brewers series and was actually told not to cheer and stand up because it "offended" some AZ fans. It seemed like their cheering consisted of a golf clap and of course the wave. My only real complaint with the ballpark is the downtown location. There is no ability to tailgate since the only parking is in parking garages.
  13. Where is the house in Glendale? Rush hour going into downtown is pretty much from 6am til a little after 9am and then anywhere between 230pm and 3pm til around 7 at night. Depending where you will be staying there are a few different ways to get to and from the airport and avoid a bulk of the traffic.
  14. I plan on going to quite a few of the games, but I also only live minutes from Peoria Sports Complex and about 15 min from Maryvale. For those of you looking for hotels, I would check into some of the hotels around the Cardinals Stadium in Glendale. There is a Hampton Inn, a Renaissance Inn and a couple other hotels in that area. It is located around the 101 and Glendale Ave. That area is about 10 minutes from the Peoria Sports Complex and about 5 from Maryvale. As far as nightlife goes, there is Westgate which has a few sports bars and is located next to the Cardinals Stadium. There is also a bunch of bars/clubs up around 83rd ave and Bell Rd which is right down the road from Peoria Sports Complex (where the Padres and Mariners play). Another place to check out is the Sandbar at 99th ave and Northern. If you want to know anything more just ask me!
  15. $323 with tax, America West MKE-PHX-LAS If ya dont mind the drive down to Chicago, $304 with tax on Southwest Or if Green Bay is an option, $308 direct on Allegiant
  16. Yeah its always been that way with Dbacks fans, they seem to get more into the side activites than the actual game. I even remember it being that way back in '01 during their WS chase. I have to admit it was pretty funny the guy getting denied the kiss from that girl, oh and when they showed Hart and Miller. We had an entertaining drunk guy over in my section who kept asking the bullpen for a ball for his kids, was mocking Villy in Spanish and saying other things.
  17. I was in section 105 row 19 right next to the bullpen. It started out as mostly D-Backs fans over there but as they cleared out some Brewers fans came over. They were all WI transplants now living out here. I think im back in section 105 tomorrow night as well. Lets hope for a long ball out in the right field http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. I will be there Monday and Tuesday. Right field bleacher area.
  19. I will be there Monday and Tuesday, Im not sure what section my tickets are in, although they are in the right field bleachers.
  20. I was working on the rescue yesterday and had just cleared one of the downtown hospitals when this call came out over the radio so we added on to the call and were one of the first units on the scene. I will just say it was a sad tragedy that did not need to happen. Working in public safety we interact with the news media on almost a daily basis and I must say that they are always very courteous and professional with us when on scene. I dont think it is fair to start pointing fingers at anyone until the Feds can do their investigation and conclude what went wrong.
  21. When I worked at the airlines and could not get to MKE from PHX, I would fly into O'Hare and either take the commuter train or there was a bus (not my fav) than ran between O'Hare and Mitchell, and I believe continued on to Waukesha. I think it was $20 between airports. As much as I hated flying into Chicago, there were far more flight options, and that translates into cheaper fares for passengers.
  22. There is the Shamrock Motel that is literally across the street from the Noah's Ark entrance. I dont remember it being too bad of a hotel, but then again that was at least 8 years ago. Maybe someone here has stayed there since?
  23. Two words for ya pitchleague, "Refundable tickets". (More expensive but you can change, cancel them without penalty, sometimes called an unrestricted fare,of course the rules vary by airline) - all the useless info i retained from my 3 years at the airlines. If i remember correctly, you are up in Northern AZ in the Kingman area,so you would most likely be flying out of Vegas I would assume. I know Midwest flys nonstop to Milwaukee, and Northwest with a stop in Minneapolis. Out of Phoenix, there is Midwest and America West nonstop. Since I'm coming from PHX, I will probably just end up getting a refundable ticket come playoff time,in case they dont make it.
