Paul Phillips over Mike Rivera? Really?! Why?

Posted
Phillips had a .596 OPS with a .281 OBP in AAA last year. I know he's just organizational filler but how is he more valuable to an organization than Mike Rivera?

It surprising in that Rivera had been very loyal to the organization and vice versa. Mike's getting up there but so is Phllips. Maybe Melvin has a non playing job (coach or scout) within the organization for Mike. I would hope that's the case.

Because Mike Rivera is also organizational filler?

And now because of the two big league catchers from last year, Lucroy who we locked up, Kottaras, Maldonado, and now Jarmillo. How many catchers ready for the big leagues do we really need?

Perhaps this was a favor to Rivera. Allow him to go to another organization and catch on with them. I don't know. Certainly not a big deal though.

I was thinking the same thing that it was a favor to Rivera. He was either the backup at AAA or maybe the starter at AA. Also perhaps the reason Jaramillo was signed so late, to replace the spot that Rivera would have been at.
