Ervin Santana to White Sox - minor league deal

This one seems weird to me. I know he was mostly hurt last year and is 35, but man I would have loved to bring him in on a minor league deal. I know I've spoken at lenghts about not wanting an old retread taking starts from our young arms, but Santana has actually been very good in his early-mid 30s and could be very productive for us. He'd definitely be worth a look on a minor league deal.

Santana is 36 and had tendon surgery on his pitching hand last year. Many times the finger affected will never get back to normal.

He could be a bargain or completely washed-up. At his age I guess only one team wanted to take minimal risk.

It's possible others might have given him a minors deal, but he liked his path back to the majors better with the White Sox than the others.

Had the Sox invested the money they were allocating to Machado, they could have made some other significant moves. Eloy Jimenez is the real deal, and so is Dylan Cease but now they need another offseason to flesh out their roster. Nothing to lose adding Santana. If he is healthy and shows anything close to his 2017 form, they can flip him. The key guy is Moncada. He was a top prospect and was awful last year. For their rebuild to come to fruition, he has to turn it around and soon.

Odd to say some guys are “the real deal” and then mention a guy who was a real deal not too long ago and was a major disappointment (Moncada). No prospect is the real deal. Moncada may turn it around, but it is a reminder there is an endless list of guys who ended up real big flops.

The Brewers would be in pretty dire straights with injuries if Santana was getting meaningful innings. I'm sure he had a bunch of minor league deals and took the one where he has the best chance of pitching in the majors. No way Milwaukee was high on that list.

Moncada is another one of those "can't miss" guys coming up through the minors. He got a huge signing bonus and depending who you listen to, he was the 4th - 7th best prospect in all baseball coming up. A sure fire star. Things changed quickly when he got to the big leagues as they usually do. Pitchers have found many holes in his swing and he whiffs at a 35% rate. He is a -15 defensive player so well below avg. with the bat and glove. Just another on of many great prospects that has been a huge flop so far.
