Questions for 2020

By had anyone ever has as bad a season drop off as Shaw and rebounded? I cannot think of any

It's difficult to simply find players that had as big of a drop as Shaw, rebound or not. That makes me think it's an aberration. Guess we'll find out in a couple days if the Brewers agree.

Pablo Sandoval. Was pretty useless for next 3 years after his "collapse" (3.2 fWAR to -1.2 fWAR, followed by -0.2, -0.8, 0.1).

The Brewers were able to get Shaw so cheaply because he had a "down" year in 2016 (down being 1.3 fWAR in 530 PA) and the Red Sox wanted more consistent production for a team with WS aspirations. He'll be 30 YO next year.

Will they non-tender him? I doubt it as they can always cut bait in spring training with minimal $ damage (~$800K at that point) if they aren't convinced he will be productive in 2020.

In 2011 adam dunn hit .157 had 11 homers and had an ops well below .600. 2012 he hit 41 homers and had an .800 ops

It happens.

That's an excellent comparison. Even Shaw's swing reminds me of Dunn's. Thankfully his defense doesn't. Puke

If Arcia were a college draft pick, he’d be just getting to the big leagues now. Let’s not forget he’s 25. He has solid offensive numbers in he minors, especially with regards to plate discipline. In Carlos Gomez’s age 24-26 seasons he had the following lines:

.247/.298/.357 (ops .655)

.225/.276/.403 (ops .679, at that point the highest of his first 5 seasons)

.260/.305/.463 (ops .768)

At that point most of us thought Carlos would never turn the corner
