Yount vs. Trammell in 1987

how did Yount win the MVP? I am having an ongoing conversation about the whole Pujols vs. Lee MVP decision and he brought this up, I looked at the stats and Trammell is a clear cut winner. Does anyone have an explanation that can help me rationalize this to him?

Yount didn't win the MVP in '87, he won in '82 and '89. George Bell won in '87, Molitor finished 5th, and Yount was 18th. Trammell did finish 2nd, though.
