Lauer really has only had one bad outing this year (ATL 3ER in 3IP) and 3 good starts. He is looking more like the pitcher we expected to get back in the trade (i.e. younger Zach Davies) and not the 2020 version he showed last year.

I think the fact that Lauer is a lefty likely makes him more valuable than Davies ever was. He does throw harder than Davies too. I've seen several 94s and perhaps even a 95 or two out of him this year. He's been a pleasant surprise so far no doubt. He, along with Urias's success with the bat lately, are definitely making that Grisham/Davies deal a bit easier to stomach.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily mean he pitched the same as Davies. But more of a #3/4 type SP ceiling. Giving up Davies wasn't too bad in the trade, but seeing Grisham blossom in SD (or continue his success as he did pretty well his last year here) was tough.

 

I read that Lauer did shorted his pitching arm path to improve the repeatability of his mechanics. I wonder if that had any impact to his velocity too? Seems counter intuitive, but who knows...

Of course, you are very much correct. But when it comes to two pitchers that offer somewhat similar stuff and perceivable upside, I would imagine that most teams would pick the lefty.

I don't know what it is but Boyd just feels like a guy who is destined to be the Cubs SP acquisition at the deadline (should they be buyers at the deadline). A guy with a lot of hype who has been historically inconsistent but somehow figures it all out once he gets to Chicago.
