Question About 'Rating'

I notice that some of the 'Off-topic' threads have ratings on them, while others don't. Just curious about how these ratings are given (page views? replies?) and why they don't exist in the MLB thread.

 

If they did exist in the MLB thread, you could warn me in advance of bridge-jumping, "I can't watch this crap anymore", panic-button threads by giving them a negative-three baseball rating. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ...

I think ratings can be given arbitrarily by anyone. If someone gives it a rating of 5, it gets a rating of 5. If someone gives it a rating of 2 and another person gives it a rating of 4, it gets a rating of 3.

 

I should make an icon of a guy in a noose to use for the "fire ____" threads.
